Lacondeguy takes home $15000 for top spot in Monster Energy Slopestyle @ Kokanee Crankworx 2008

2009 Kokanee Crankworx dates set for August 8-16

The Monster Energy Slopestyle @ Kokanee Crankworx dominated the Boneyard Slopestyle course in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park today. Every year this event draws the biggest crowd of the festival, watching the best athletes in the world of mountain biking compete for $30,000 in prize money. With the live webcast on Crankworx.com keeping those watching at home glued to their screens, as well as the massive crowd seeing the action first-hand, this year's Monster Energy Slopestyle was witnessed by tens of thousands worldwide.

KONA team rider Andreu Lacondeguy of Spain took top spot and $15,000 in the finals with a score of 94.3; second place and $8,000 went to Lance Mcdermott of the UK with a score of 91.5; third place went to Whistler's own Brandon Semenuk, walking away with $4,500 and a score of 89.8. All the riders in the top eight took home cash for their amazing efforts today.

Lacondeguy's winning run consisted of a long list of impressive tricks. He started out with a double back flip off the first table, a trick that has never been seen before in competition. He followed that up with a foot plant off the Monster Snake, a back flip X-up, flat spin 360, topside nac-nac, can-can step-down, superman, and finished off with a back flip onto the final Kokanee feature and superman off into the village.

"I just kept trying the double back flip," says Lancondeguy. "It was that trick that did the job, it was gnarly you know."

(*Editors note-glad you're ok Casey after you got rowdy out there today!)

This year's Slopestyle course was designed by John Cowan and as usual the course was nothing but perfect. With huge tables, dirt jumps, wooden spines, the Giro box and the always insane Kokanee drop as the last feature, the riders had their choice of line to impress the judges in the two-run format to advance to the eight man final.

"Slopestyle contests are about the all around impression, and all the guys in the finals had clean smooth runs," says Head Judge Colin Duncan. With tricks like the double back flip, back flip tail whip and the back flip up onto the Kokanee box and a front flip off, it was an incredibly tough contest to judge. In the end, Lacondeguy's stylish run, and the insane double back flip, just won out."

The Monster Energy Slopestyle @ Kokanee Crankworx was the highlight of Day 8 at Kokanee Crankworx 2008. Day 9, the final day of the festival includes the Canadian Open DH, Pro and Amateur categories taking place from 11:30am - 5:00pm. The TELUS concert series finishes off tomorrow with DJ Science playing a set from 10:45-11:30am.

For more event results, videos and recaps of the Monster Energy Slopestyle, VW Trick Showdown and the "Giant Slalom" check out www.Crankworx.com.

Mark the calendars now for Kokanee Crankworx 2009, as organizers have just announced next year's dates. Next year's Kokanee Crankworx will take place August 8 to 16, 2009.

First double was landed in a comp 2 yrs ago by Greg Watts at 26 Trix in Leogang and second last year at the same place by Alex Pro

We're talking off a table here, not any double.
  • 2 0
but, i believe Greg and Alex didn't complete their runs, they bailed cause they were so pumped. lacondeguy actually finished his run, and did it with style
  • 0 0
 Umm... no he didn't
  • 12 4
I love Lacondeguy because he pushes himself so hard, and has been doing so for the past 4 years. He actually deserves it!!! Dont worry boys, Semenuk is stil young and he will shine someday, soon. Guaranteed. Not that he doesnt shine now, but give him 2 years, then see. JUST WAIT
  • 0 0
then in 2 years he wil be doen and it will be someone else doign his job.
  • 8 1
What about Lance McDermott he owned, like has anyone ever seen a frontflip of a stepdown like that before, and i think greg watts would of took it if he could of held it togther before his flip whip

  • 10 2
awsome win for him, he finally stuck that double and took it home nicely. love his riding.
  • 11 3
i got so pumped after he landed that double. this years slopestyle was so much better than last years i think.
  • 33 4
Ya for sure, but there was some bullshit judging. Even though I don't even like Lance, and i'm stoked that Andreu took it, but LANCE FUCKIN FRONTFLIPPED THE DROP!!!!! Also I beleive Semenuks run was better than Lance's. Everytime he was in the air off anything, there was a trick. As well, I beleive that Boyko got the shaft too, his run was deffinitely finals worthy, but his qualifying score was stupidly low. There is gonna be so much complaining that Cam got 4th again, but he brought it upon himself. In the Trick Showdon, he showed he was capable of superflipping the drop, but when the finals came around, he did it off the left side roller coaster, and on the kokanee kicker just barspun on to t-whip off. I think he should've planned it out differently. Overll this years was amazing, and I new it would be as soon as I got to ride the course at Air Affair, and I'm so stoked to be able to witness it live in Whistler, one of the best three days of my life. novel over
  • 7 1
And for all the Cam lovers out there (me included) Cam did the exact same run 3 times in a row. Please do not say he should have won, because its just not true.
  • 6 6
i think that the judges scored Lacondeguy waaayyy to high.. it was really unfair. i think that lance's run was better and he deserved the win
  • 5 4
I think there needs to be new judges. like lacondeguy said after his double flip he just coasted threw the run not doing any serious tricks. And this wasnt even the first double flip in competition and didnt deserve a 94. lance Mcdermott had and amazing run with some of the best riding ive ever seen he more than deserved the win. Cam mccaul should of got 2nd or 3rd place. he had a very nice run put together with alot of technecal new school and classic old school. Everyone shut up that he used the same run, he triedm to nail it perfectly to get smoothness points.
  • 4 3
If he was going to use the same run he did to qualify, he should have headed home right then and there. The most important part of slopestyle is creativity. And I see nothing creative about using the same run 3 times. He knew he had to step it up to beat Andreu, but he failed to do so. He didn't deserve a podium, end of.
  • 3 3
But his runs werent the same. each was slightly better than the other. besides he didnt need to step up to beat Andreu, Andreus run was pure crap besides the first trick.
The biggest part of slopestyle ISNT creativity, the most important part is doing somthing no one else will, especially doing a trick off a stunt everyone else is scared of. Cams run was totally unique (super flip off step down). And sure no one else double backflipped off the trick jump but i dont think any 1 trick is good enough to win the competition.
  • 5 2
 You just condradicted yourself:

1) "the most important part is doing somthing no one else will"
2) "but i dont think any 1 trick is good enough to win the competition."

Having a little trouble deciding, are we?
  • 6 5
crankworx is just turd with the new school bmxer wannabe mexicans dominating with a single trick.
  • 1 1
I do agree with you in a way, but you kind of worded it in a way that made you contradict yourself.

Here is what you said after I said creativity is the most important thing:

"the most important part is doing somthing no one else will"

So isn't that creativity, if you are doing something no one else is doing?
  • 2 2
i meant that the most important thing to slopestyle is for people to pull a trick off a stunt no one else will.
thats whats changes slopestyle from other events. in BMX park its all determined by the tricks, but in slopestyle pulling a 360 over a huge gap drop beats a 720 on trick jump.
With that said i dont think 1 trick on a "trick friendly jump" should win a comp
  • 1 3
bro thers this thing caled the vw trick showdown, the judegs just got real stoked off the flip and think that his whole run was good, wich it wasent,Semenuk's back flip on then forwid flip off was beter, the
  • 2 1
Umm, that was Lance that backflipped to front flip.
  • 2 2
And for all the Cam lovers out there (me included) Cam did the exact same run 3 times in a row. Please do not say he should have won, because its just not true.

You know, that they didn't judge the runs together. They judged each run separately from all the runs they did before, so it doesn't matter. He dialed his run in. Also, a double backflip does not deserve to win the comp. No way, he coasted the rest of the course after the double flip. Lance should have won. That is all.

I loved his interview after! "I just got up there and said; I'M GONNA MOTHA f*ckIN LAND THAT SHIT!"

"and I did. AFTER EATIN' SHIT ALL AFTERNOON I f*ckIN' DID IT!"

Nice to see Lacondeguy put in some effort for once. Saw him at colorado crankworx and he just dead sailored every hit. Iknow the weather was bad blah blah blah, but everyone else tried why shouldn't he. The guy gets paid to ride a bike, his job is to perform, not make excuses.

thats why he double-backflipped and won Crankworks u stupid turd-nugget....dur-dah-dur
  • 3 0
Hey dumbshit, my only point was that he tries when it's nice out and doesn't when it's not perfect. In my opinion that is weak.

  • 5 0
oh and did anyone mention he won it on a kona!!
  • 3 0
dan, 15 grand! NORBA must be sh*ting in their pants at the idea of that kind of prize money
  • 1 0
dude i know greg watts didnt win but he got like a 64 and he didnt trick one jump, but he did FLIPWHIP of the drop, he looked pissed, but this years crankworx was a lot better than last years A LOT BETTER!!!
  • 2 0
not true he had a solid run going into that. he fuked up on the berm and couldnt hit the stepdown cuz he was so nervous. he said its juts like riding another sesh but oviosuly that wasnt true. anyway he did miss a hit and you canot win with that. he got his 3 grand for the flipwhip time to back up his move with other amazing tricks in his runs. then he should win no problem hes actualy doing the best tricks in biking, but hes starting to get them in slopestyles,i thnik we will see this guy stick around awhile cuz hes got so many of his tricks to do still usualy you see guys do these comps and lay all there best shit down, greg wasnt doing his best shit, except the flipwhip drop.
  • 2 0
People are funny. Why argue over who should win. It's done, It's over, put your opinions in the forum. Put props under pictures
  • 0 0
what the hell? he won because he double flipd? its been done in comp, for f*cks sake its been done in a movie, no one has front flipd a drop that big!

the judges suck cam macauls backflip over the canyon gap in nwd8 is far beter than the double flip.
  • 1 0
Am I the only one who doesn't get what Cam's flip over the canyon in NWD8 has to do with Crankworx 2008?

And yes it has been done in a comp before, so what? How many 360s, backflips and tailwhips have we seen in a comp before? Just because it has been done before doesn't render it irrelevant.

And you can't compare videos to comps, no pressure, near infinite retakes if you want... No pressure to stick it first time and go on to complete a full run.

Frontflip drop was amazing but so was the double backflip, coupled with Andreu's style on the rest of the course I think he deserved to pip Lance but that's just my opinion. You can't judge a win on one trick.
  • 0 0
I would say the pain of crashing something that big adds a wee bit of pressure.
  • 2 2
About Time Lacondeguy put in a good finals run this season. He's had to hold back because of bad weather conditions in most finals this year so far. Can't wait to see the vids.
  • 5 2
OMG, lacondeguy is the best!! Congratulations!
  • 3 4
back flip into front flip - 1st time ever in competition - and no win???
McDermott popped out of compression from landing the back flip straight into the front flip almost seamlessly.. superb!
double back flip - pah - seen it before Wink
  • 1 0
The kid has been shooting for the top for a few years. He's always been my favorite. He deserves it!! He seems like a funny guy too!
  • 1 0
fuck the whole thing about how that was the first person to do a double in a comp is bullshut alex pro landed a double last year. but its a sick comp to bad i was working
  • 1 0
And Greg Watts landed a double the year before...
  • 1 0
i really think thats lances run was a little better i think he shoulda won and andreu second because a flip on and a frontflip off a drop is amazing
  • 0 0
when i was tlaking to both of them last night they said this might be the last year they will be biking they want to go over the motocross next year most likey not competeing in mountain biking next crankworxs
  • 4 3
what are you talking about? the live webcast was awesome, did you fail to look at your screen or something?
  • 0 0
it froze like 10 times, but it was good when it worked
  • 4 3
I'm glad Lacondeguy won, his double flip was dialed! and his run was so smooth! Props to lacondeguy!
  • 1 1
andreu and lance destoyed everything fuckers!!! thats the way! fuckin dobuel flips and frontflips.. semenuk super goos run but nothing as gnarly as them!
  • 0 0
lance mcdermott absolutely ploughs!! anyone fancy linking me to the video of these runs?? theyre not on the crankworx website
  • 2 1
sick shit there, saw the whole thing double flip was crazy, but the guy has one f*ckin anoying voice Razz
  • 20 21
the judging was so f*cked. Andreu run was sick, but he should not have won. To much hype for the double. Semenuk's run overall was much, much better.
  • 17 18
true, Semenuk kept it together everyrun, while andreu depended on the last run for everything to fall together, it was an amazing run, but semenuk should have won
  • 7 6
thats cuz andreu bailed the double on his first run. he would of kept his run going well if he didnt bail, but he bailed so he just took it easy so he could do good in the next run,
  • 13 2
the judging could've been better. they seemed to score more of andreu's double b flip than his whole run together. it was a decent run but he didn't trick every obstacle with a high degree of difficulty compared to semenuk. semenuk had much more flow and style and the judges should've put that into account. good job andreu for the double b flip
  • 6 7
i agree with all of you
  • 9 5
i think semeneuk should have gotten 1st or 2nd. his runs in the finals were both so clean and smooth, and he tricked EVERYTHING. and lance should have won i think, he had thos huge front flips, the super can, backflip on front flip off. that was sick. all andrue did was the double front flip, which yea it great and all, but aside from that he did nothing special. i think it should have been:
1st: Mcdermott
2nd. Semenuek
3rd: McCaul
4th: andreu
  • 4 2
All these people getting negative props, well I've get some too. Andreu was not deserving of a 1st, because his run was almost completely based on his double backflip. Semenuk should have won, no question in my mind.
  • 2 2
why andreus run was SICK i dont get why everyone is saying "oh yea he only did a double backflip w.e" that f*cking nuts...
and he had a bunch of other SICK tricks put in and it was very smooth.
i think it should have been closer for second and first mabye but i by pulling andreus score down a little or giving mcdermott a better score.
rwebb9 i dont get how you think mccauls run was better than andreus he didnt even do much crazy shit 1 super flip and yes that is nuts but he didnt do much else to wow me in my opinion
  • 0 0
amdrw was doing nac nacs and 1 foot cans(holy 1999) where mcCaul was doing tailwhips ansd flips. should mcCaul beat him i dont think so but it wasnt just a superflip. andrews run highligjht was the double flip and the 3 the rest kinda was like so tricks we saw done along time ago.even he admited he didnt go that big after the double flip
  • 2 1
yes... he felt he didn't have to go too too big after the double flip... for 1) he didn't want to wipe out and screw his whole run over.
2) and he thought it was good enough to win. and he was right...
and when you say andreu was doing nacs nacs and 1 foot cans... that isn't at all true since he threw a backflip, 360, superman, backflip onto the kokanee fruit bowl and superman out too.
  • 1 1
AGAIN this time read it properly,he was doing those tricks where other guys were doinf tailwhips. so ok lets say his double flip owned cams pendulum,mcCaul basicly kicked his ass on everythign else tho. how can you beat someone when you only go bigger then evryone else once. otherwise greg watts should of won.you no what i mean. yea the supermans and other flips andrew did backed up then run,but like no one gave anyone else credit for supermans and stiff flips.what about cam zinc he did the narliest line on the course and threw down. if he landed that flip x up 1 foot out of the drop he easily should of won. but have you looked at the drop he 3'd you could actualy die. like he put his life on the line 4 times and stomped it.
  • 4 0
you're right about zink for sure. his first finals score should of been higher in the first place. they underestimated the 3 off the big drop... hardly no one else even hit that line.
  • 3 1
 Nice Lako!
  • 4 3
i agree with tabletop... lacondeguy is just mental!
  • 1 1
yeah, id be pumped to get 3rd if i was semenuk, as im sre he is.
