Is This The Best Drone Control You've Ever Seen? - Video

Apr 26, 2018
by Olivier Cuvet

Olivier Cuvet and Max Peythieu got to race with a drone on the Full Serlin track near Grenoble, France. The drone meant that the pilot could both follow and be chased by the riders, giving a brand new perspective of the track. We just can't wait to try it on other crazy tracks.

Come on! Look at the shaky moments, just as someone who would be in front/behind the rider landing roughly... not filmed on a drone unless it's bumping into leafy twigs along the trail at exactly the right moments and changing altitude perfectly in time with every lip and jump.

I watched it and it looks more like a drone automatically following the first rider in the group. Sometimes the camera is pointed forwards and get the rider who the drone is following and sometimes it's pointed backwards, getting the rider behind the person the drone is following.

Looks (smells?) a little fishy to me as well. I build, fly, and film with drones as a hobby, and my opinion is this is mounted on a steadycam / servo rig on a riders helmet or something. Drone footage would be much smoother. Wouldn't be following the lips and landings and berms like that. Also would be very dangerous, even with a skilled pilot. Not to mention someone willing to destroy their expensive drone filming a line somewhere like that with all those tight trees. Would love to be proven wrong though!

@smithcreek: the autonomous modes are pretty horrid... I seriously doubt a drone could do that on its own.

I'm calling fake too. I think they must have cropped the helmet cam (gimbal?) footage to smooth out the bumps, then all you have to do is add in some pesky drone noise and most people are fooled.
  • 1 0
Yeah, not a drone. Gimbal on rider (forward and reverse). What modern drone records audio anyway? Wind + prop sounds would make audio useless.
Even if it was a drone, kind of a waste as you could get the same footage with better audio with a rider-mounted gimbal.

@Olivier Cuvet want to come clean? Or say who the drone pilot is and let's see more his work? On your FB post you say "Max and I had a chance to meet the craziest drone pilot in the universe in serlin! Discover the full serlin as you have never seen, and be there on may 5th for the opening!". But you don't mention his name, tag him, etc.

Had me for the first ten seconds. I've seen what the mini race quad pilots can do. But after looking at the rest of the video, its a gimbal on a helmet with audio over the top. Ghhheeyyy

Edit, it seems the youtube account & PB posting name are the same. Can anyone pay to have an article on PBs front page?

My bad, looks like a blog someone on PB staff probably picked up and pinned to the front page. Still though, not as advertised.

The best drone control I've seen was that pesky police drone with night vision that was all over my ass until I shot it down but I digress.
  • 13 5
I have a really hard time believing this was filmed on a drone. Especially the reverse angles with likely no direct vision of the "drone" from the pilots position.... I would say it's filmed form another bikers perspective?
  • 3 1
One would just need to mount an additional camera. Most modern drones have a direct camera feed to the pilot
  • 4 1
Looks like an acro / racing drone.. The reverse is them chasing the drone with the camera mounted in the rear..
  • 1 0
@andrewrussellthomas: correct with he direct feed camera still facing forward
  • 10 3
Unless the drone is doing all the jumps too, this was not shot with a drone. If I added buzzing to my Whistler POV footage and titled it "A-Line Drone Footage" would it end up on PinkBike's front page?
  • 1 0
It looks like you could probably pay to have it on the front page like Oliver has done here. Small account with few followers. Odd. Not the quality we're used to?
  • 1 2
The footage is too jerky to not be a drone
  • 11 4
Most people are completely clueless as to the capabilities of drones these days, as for this being the best drone flying ever?, not even close!

This is some click bait bull-sheet

April 1st already? There was a similar hoax posted on the front page about three months ago... This is a gimbal mounted on a helmet, and a bad one at that - a good gimbal isn't that shaky. Real drone footage looks like this:

Damn that vid you posted is nuts! Awesome skiing, location, editing, but most of all shooting. Wow *mindblown*

Is "non contractual picture" a euphemism for "lazy Photoshop"?
  • 2 0
I don't think that is a drone. It follows the contour of the trail too closely to be it. I think it is a gimbal mounted GoPro on a helmet and they just added the drone sound to the video.

Even more impressive. Swatch rocket air course preview with Sam Pilgrim m.youtube.com/watch?v=43dnvLvK5Co
  • 2 0
That Sam pilgrim video is amazing!
  • 2 0
How the f*ck did he recorded that????
  • 2 0
@donpinpon29: Most likely a 360° camera attached to Sam's helmet. The footage allows to change the virtual camera position in post-production. See concept explained here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BXLPHtViok

 Hahahaha “drone” footage
  • 4 1
 DJI drones don't record audio
  • 1 0
They do if you have an older one with a GoPro attached
  • 2 0
Even modern ones do. But that's not the main issue with this video.

Dang that’s some good piloting if it’s not on an autopilot gig. Sweet footage.

On the other hand that park looks sick as

Sounds like he's being chased by a swarm of bees

 #fakenews it’s actually a Chris King hub!

Some of the best actual drone footage I have seen is just below is just below in Dreamride 3. Really makes the movie.

The picture below the video looks like it was done in MS paint. Wtf pinkbike?!

Great drone control...maybe next time attach a better camera or film when the lighting isn’t complete garbage?
  • 3 1
 Strange song choice

some of my co workers are big into quadcopter racing, and they could pilot their quadcopters through this no problem, but doing it on a film drone is unreal.

That track looks insane ! Croissant de fromage.

Medialuna de queso? I'll add ham to mine please!
  • 1 0
I hit mute, that was annoying. Would rather just watch the flowy jumping.
  • 1 0
I'll break down and buy a drone when they can do this autonomously.

That is such bullshit. It definitely is not a drone.
