Aug 29, 2019
by Ross Bell
One of the best parts of World Champs is the variety of drool-worthy bikes that are wheeled out for one race a year. We've spent the day marooned in the pits of Mont-Sainte-Anne to bring you the blingy bikes that the riders hope will take them to gold this weekend. There are more to be added tomorrow so stay tuned:

Let's not kid ourselves, this is the part of the World Champs we look forward to the most! Our annual overdose of bike porn
  • 13 0
Right on Spark24!! All the sikkest shit in the world that you can't have! And the chrome blows it away...
  • 9 1
I don’t even care who wins, I just want to see who has the nicest bike.
  • 50 27
I didnt think the V-10 could get any uglier. Congrats, Loris. You did it.
  • 2 0
@scary1: I like the usual paintjob he rides with during the year.
  • 2 1
 Yeah ????
  • 3 0
 Pimpin ain't easy!
  • 5 1
can we talk about this +214 -4 new prop format thing?
  • 2 2
@kookseverywhere: where is that? Maybe ill get some respect, then
  • 3 0
I'm going to be totally biased and boldy state state that all NZ and Australian bikes have the best paint jobs. Though special mentions go to Zabjek's Devinci, Cabirou's Scott and Harrison's Trek.
  • 1 2
I think I just made a sticky mess in my pants
  • 151 0
Nice that Mick painted his nails to match the theme
  • 7 0
Laughed way too hard at this! Thank you!
  • 109 4
ill never not laugh at the new kona linkage, the PT Cruiser of suspension design
  • 14 0
 Advertising space
  • 31 1
That would imply that the PT cruiser actually functioned
  • 23 0
More like the Pontiac Aztek. Zero style, '90's function, worthless resale...
  • 16 0
Hey who wouldn't want to drive an elderly persons shoe?
  • 1 0
 @anchoricex That’s gold!
  • 1 0
@mtbikemccoy: Walter White owned one.....must count for something.....
  • 2 0
They look like they designed with a cookie cutter. FFS people throw at least the tinniest bit of interesting surfacing on it.
  • 81 3
Rider: Dakotah Norton - Country: USA
Rider: Mick Hannah - Country: Australia
Rider: Dean Lucas - Country: Watermelon
  • 89 1
Rider: Marine Cabirou - House: Stark
  • 62 3
A lot of these are pretty ugly. But Marine Cabirou's Chrome'd out Gambler takes first place.
  • 2 0
The curse of the chrome bike though!
  • 7 2
Plastic bikes that look like metal. The future is now!
  • 2 0
@CantQuitCartel: Tell that to Loic's chromed out Lapierre in 2015
  • 53 3
Those operators are so sick with the old logos. Simple yet amazing
  • 8 1
Came here to say the same thing!
  • 1 0
Yeah I loved the old Logo's- I didn't love the rest of the paint on Connor's- that classic font, a nice solid colour and then something on that massive linkage plate might have looked nicer IMO.
  • 35 2
Call me old fashioned but I like it when the main color scheme is based off the countries flag. All these bikes are full on porn though.
  • 11 0
 Old fashioned lad reporting in.

Totally agree with you about the country themed paintjobs.

Still would display all of these all over my house tho Smile
  • 6 1
Call me old fashioned but I like then the main color scheme is based on the riders preferred place for waffles.
  • 26 1
Fan of Martin Maes, but those orange lowers on a red/yellow/black bike. OMG, my eyes, my eyes!

Think Scott takes the team award Wink
  • 4 0
Toss in the black decals on an orange fork.... eash...
  • 1 0
@onemanarmy: I was thinking that in general, the frame companies have stepped up, but the fork companies have not. There needs to be some liaising going on next year. Fox and RS should supply a set of lowers to each team for each rider to do the pain on them too. For example on the Santa Cruz bikes, a bold red/white on the sliders would look awesome. Special stickers is a bit Trusthouse Forte.
  • 16 0
Three school of thoughts on display for tire placement:

-Brand at the valve
-Model at the valve
-I don't give a f*ck

Dean Lucas with the backward front assegai
Flo Payet with the backward rear assegai

Tahnee's Schwalbe G-Up Crew that still looks like a Magic Mary thread design.

And only 3 bikes having the proper spokes color...damm.
  • 1 0
what? Silver spokes look jank. Black or nothing..unless you run those I9 custom spokes...then pink on pink ya heard meah
  • 19 1
Dear Santa Cruz, Please hire one artist and allow them to pick colors for your bikes and make rad bikes for the team. Thanks, All humans with vision
  • 20 3
#tahneegotrobbed that bike is about as exciting as watching Paul Newman picking blueberries
  • 7 1
Was going to say the same thing. No effort spared, err I mean taken
  • 6 3
paul newman is dead-watching a dead person pick blueberries would be exciting. scientifically, of course.
  • 31 0
Hey, originally I wasn’t meant to be back racing in time for Worlds because of my injury, so I’m extremely grateful that everyone involved even did something for me. I asked for a super simple bike... I didn’t want to go overboard and my kit is pretty wild. Plus, there’s more than what meets the eye... this paint is super light and used on the redbull Formula one cars, which I personally find pretty dope. Smile
  • 3 0
@tahneeseagrave: great to see you back racing,
  • 15 2
The bikes this year are kind of yawn compared to previous years... I'm from Aus and I feel there bikes are getting boring, look too much like previous years. Loving dean's gambler, flo payet and vali holl rig the most. Santa Cruz wtf??
  • 14 0
 Love the stinky
  • 4 0
My wife never let's me... Eek
  • 1 0
@Dropthedebt: fortunately my wife let's me see other women. Unfortunately, I havent found any recently, and no stink in sight
  • 10 0
Lots of non national color themes this year (what nation has a marble flag?).

Cabirou's Chrome finish wins in my book. Flo Payet's Scott was also nice.

Kona wins points for the retro scheme but that rocker link.. :o
  • 2 2
The Aussie flag is red, white, and blue, but our sporting teams are green and gold. I think the former looks better on bikes as we can see above.
  • 11 1
Anybody else notice that all the intense boys are running alloy E13 cranks... This only reinforces my theory on John Hall taking the fall for E13 for Gwins crank snapping.
  • 1 0
Any reason why you think he could be to blame over an e13 problem. Granted no one looks over his bike after every fun but my boys e13 crank snapped.
  • 15 2
@stealthpenguin: That's exactly the point, JH said he installed some old proto cranks by mistake that they were told not to use by E13. When clearly it was just the carbon cranks they were using broke and they didn't want to bad mouth the sponsor. They've now switched from carbon to alu after Gwin's resulting ankle injury.
  • 2 0
Also, it appears there is a Sram Code caliper, but still a TRP lever? Am I seeing that right? How does that work with DOT vs mineral oil?
  • 3 0
@hamncheez: it looks like it doesnt it... But I'm not certain it is. There is no laser etching for one (which sram would never produce for them as they have no ties to sram) and there is no bleeding edge port. I think it's just a blatant ripoff...
  • 2 0
@hamncheez: strange, cause Gwins are Raw and the rest are black. Hmmm. Either way.
  • 10 1
Poor effort Santa Cruz hope Greg's looks better. Remember Peaty's bikes come on that looks lazy.
  • 2 0
Yes, Steve's bikes & kit were always spot on!
  • 3 0
Steve’s bikes were done by Fat Creations, they’re doing the Madison Saracen team bikes this year
  • 1 0
@phdotd: no wonder saracen bikes look incredible
  • 11 1
Bernard Kerr's Pivot for the win!
  • 3 1
exactly! forget Cabirou, Bernards bike is the best looking...
  • 8 0
 So far I’d vote...

1) Mark Wallace
2) Dak Norton
3) Marine Cabirou
  • 7 0
Hands down the best thing in the whole article is the OG Kona font on Connor’s Operator!!!
  • 11 5
“Intense Cycles desperately seeking bike graphics and colour theory prodigy! If you think you can save us please send you CV and a short e-portfolio if your work to.....”
  • 17 2
Knock their paint schemes all you want, but realize that they were all painted in one weekend by the owner of Intense Cycles, Jeff Steber. The guy is incredibly talented.
  • 3 5
@Highrevkev: with what? Leftover decal scraps and random masking?
If anyone can make the m29 actually look good and quit fighting the lines of the bike, i wish they would get on that
  • 4 2
@scary1: Gwinn's bike's paint job looks like it was handed to a first timer. Masking tape marks everywhere. Yuck!
  • 1 0
@scary1: go check Moir's bike from Cairns world champs. That was a nice vessel
  • 7 0
I think the m29s L00K dope as is the fact that they were painted in Steber’s backyard.
  • 18 10
 Awful job, santa cruz.
  • 10 3
 They look sick to me.
  • 3 1
 @yakimonti: agreed. I like the.
  • 2 1
 @yakimonti: they make me sick
  • 5 1
 yep really disappointing
  • 3 0
So hot! Marked NSFW due to the way I'm steaming up my office right now.

Although, not many going absolutely nuts this time.
I'd say Mulally's Intense is the winner here. Patriotic (it's worlds after all) and rad.
A close 2nd. Brannigan's GT (extra points for the All Black NZ flair).
  • 3 0
Why is it that the Mick and Tracy look like they're wearing their undies ouside of their pants.

And how come Trek gives their DH riders like three or four custom bikes a year and Jolanda Neff, is riding the same blue prototype race after race. She is probably their most marketable and successful rider currently. Katy Winton too, she and Pedro Burns are finally riding custom rigs, but they've basically done the last two seasons on off-the-shelf bikes.
Doesn't Reeder get a custom bike for nearly every event? Even Jackson Goldstone has a custom session.
/rant
  • 5 0
This is bike porn at its best. My favorites are Brannigan's GT and Moir's Intense.
  • 4 0
Yeah man, outta nowhere George’s GT takes the prize for me. Awesome looking bike..
  • 2 0
 Brannigan's GT, nicely understated
  • 3 1
Love this post every year. Would Def buy a Canada frame wrap like Wallaces!

On a more boring note, it looks like Dak Norton has removed the pins from his HTs .
I always felt clip pedals with big pins would make foot rotation harder and therefore harder to quickly unclip. Reckon that's why?
  • 4 1
Not a fan of many this year. Nothing too exciting and lots of random colour schemes. Most dissapointing is Tahnee's. Usually has got some of the best looking fox kit going so expecting a lot from her frame.
  • 4 0
And we continue with the 1970s plastic benchtop look. Kona with og graphics looks bangin.
  • 4 0
I'm not from Belgium but Maes' GT fury is trully a red devil, what a gorgeous bike !
  • 4 0
Now we know Sick Mick's World Champs World Champs specialist trick: Painted Fingies
  • 4 0
It's like the custom painting is no looking as ptriotic as it used to be. Just a few.
  • 4 0
Matt Walker's Pivot. Pivots are normally the worst looking bikes, but that green is amazing
  • 1 0
Maybe Kintner's queen of hearts bike a few weeks ago has set an unfairly high standard, but most of these bikes look pretty mundane. Santa Cruz might as well have not even bothered. Finn has his bike on IG ... I'd be giving that first prize over all of the ones shown in this post.
  • 3 0
So good. What are those G-UP Crew tyres Tahnee is running? And is Dean Lucas running an Assegai backwards up front??
  • 1 0
 I was wondering, too...
  • 1 0
 Renamed magic marys
  • 1 0
She is special! That TR looks like a real bike too, not a bedazzled jewel box.
  • 4 0
Are Hugo and Thomas sharing that bike? Hope their runs are far apart.
  • 2 0
Apparently they're also sharing it with Bruce, since his name is on it.
  • 4 0
The red of that FURY is insane!
  • 3 0
So, maybe i missed it, but what is going on with the TRP Code on the intense teams bikes?
  • 3 0
Am I the only one who finds it amusing that the new Fox proto shock is on Loris Vergiers bike? Big Grin
  • 2 0
So Gwin's bike posted here and on Vital are completely different. His bike there is a mullet bike and has a totally different paint job. I wonder which he's going to race.
  • 3 0
I'll be honest, I only clicked to see if Von Klebelsberg had a denim painted Supreme!
  • 2 0
I like the fact that exept for Canyon, all other bike companies hire designers that work while on edibles. Because what the super f**k are those frame designs man?!
  • 3 0
Wyn's bikes are always soo good.
  • 2 0
Super cool artworks going on there but imho nowhere close to last year's paitjobs !
  • 3 0
Agreed.. a few bikes seems kinda rushed this year
  • 1 0
I need that Kona, they should really release next years models with a similar retro colourway and font, when I look at the V10 it reminds me of a Saracen Myst colourway
  • 2 0
No amount of paint could ever make that Polygon pretty...if this was ugly bike world champs then it takes gold all day..
  • 4 0
 Maes wins it
  • 1 0
 Revenge!
  • 2 0
Connor Fearon's Kona Operator for the win paint job wise, that fleck is awesome plus the old school kona logos
  • 2 1
A lot of these look really similar, like the pics are looped. Torn between Drool and Blank Stare Also what's with all the green and yellow/gold?
  • 2 0
Cabirous Chrome Scott Wallaces nice CAN Sender Brannigans kiwi Fury Nicely done without going over the top.
  • 2 1
The GTs are looking mighty fine! Surprisingly the best looking bikes here. Not a fan of the bent down tube look of the Devinci and Intense bikes.
  • 1 0
I love the way the graphics on both Kona's at reminiscent of the old stinky's and Transition never fail in terms of good paintwork and graphics but F me those Treks are ugly
  • 3 1
Apart from the Canyons an the dipped Treks.... not really impressed this year.......
  • 2 0
Can the Aussies please send their bikes to Jamaica when they’re done. Colours are spot on ????????
  • 3 0
Brendans is the best, not sure why its not here?
  • 1 0
Obviously I'm going to be hoping for Brit riders in the race but I'll hold my hands up the Aussies have the paint competition in the bag this year
  • 2 0
The top 5 bikes are the best looking. I really like Dean Lucas' Scott Gambler Drool
  • 1 0
Big props to Jeff Steber's paint jobs on those M29s. Neko's is my favorite. Mad Plaid. Also, I am loving the nostalgic graphics on the Operators.
  • 1 0
The pivot pheonix is my favorite...that marble green looks like my first real bicycle when i was 10, dyno comp in that same color back in 1995 (damn im old.)
  • 2 1
Is that Fast Shocks or a Fawst Shox?

A-A-Ron coming out with a predictable Stars and Stripes theme.
  • 1 0
I always wondered; what kind of sorcery is needed to keep the bike up without a bike stand?
  • 3 0
 A ninja
  • 2 0
 Low COG.
  • 1 0
 Low pressure, WT tires.
  • 2 0
Maes’ bike is a certified beautician.
  • 3 1
Need a weed theme on one, that would be dope.
  • 5 2
All the dope bikes are raced at the EWS, not DH.
  • 2 0
holy sheet, Connor and Jackson's Kona Operators look absolutely stunning
  • 1 0
And quite a few bikes are "decorated" with a MORC: Walker's Pivoct, Brannigan's GT, Luca Shaw, Loris.
  • 2 0
I want that one, no, that one... Or maybe this one
  • 2 1
How long has Amaury been on the new rear triangle/linkage design? This is the first I've noticed it.
  • 2 0
Got hit by a wave of nostalgia looking at the old-school painted Konas
  • 2 0
Is it so hard to paint the fork lowers?
  • 2 0
No mention of the gwin mullet?
  • 2 0
Santa Cruz used to have cool paint jobs
  • 2 0
That polished SCOTT , so much want!!!
  • 2 0
 Mark Wallace..Sweet SENDER!! GO CANADA!!!
  • 1 0
Dear Transition Bikes, I love you guys, and your bikes, however your graphics and finish need help.
  • 1 0
George Brannigan's GT Fury is awesome, All Blacks! ...and Matt Walker's Pivot Phoenix. ...and so many others.
  • 2 0
 The Konas absolutely win this.
  • 2 0
Kona should keep that old logo forever
  • 2 0
Marine's chrome gambler wins, every one go home.

  • 1 0
wow...you can see how the fork offset is different looking. Those MORC 40 crowns go -8mm
  • 1 0
Loving Tahnee's color combo. Nothing special for the worlds, but i'd love it an everyday bike!
  • 8 9
People can say what they want about the Polygons but they look pretty clean, the Norco on the other hand looks like it’s missing a linkage.
  • 20 6
No, people cannot say what they want. I was told that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it.
  • 2 0
 @mtbikemccoy: touche
  • 1 0
And don't forget the people that will come and wash your mouth out with soap!
  • 1 0
Will someone please fix Mark Wallace's tire labels?

 Kona/Schwinn Homegrown baby....
  • 1 0
I hope there's a raffle so I can Wyn that GT
  • 1 0
First thing I thought of when I saw Wyn's bike - was that he left it under a bridge and pigeons had pooped on it all night.
  • 2 1
