Day 1 Randoms - Eurobike 2022

Eurobike has left Friedrichshafen for 2022 and today marked the opening of this year's show at the new venue in the center of Frankfurt. Just like with most trade shows this year supply chains are limiting what brands have available, but here's what we found on the first day.

Royal was showing off loads of updates to its current lineup of clothing. Some of the highlights include new red stitching on its pants that is easy to pick so you can make the legs longer if you want, and more use of sustainable materials across the range.

Knog has launched a new bike tracker that attaches to your bottle mounts. Once it has been set up any movement of the bike sets off an 85-decibel alarm and sends a text to your phone. It can also act like an Air Tag and allow tracking through the ‘Find My Network’ features on Apple devices.

Enduro Bearings were featuring its stainless steel bottom brackets that are 'guaranteed for life'. At the stand, there was a Shimano bottom bracket for comparison with a sizeable difference in the ball bearing size between the two.

Launched this week, Hayes' Dominion T4 brakes were on display. Hayes claim it saves around 100 grams over the A4 brakes. We also saw the T2, two piston version of these brakes.

Topeak has added Air Tag compatibility to its Ninja Cage Z and Cagemount. It also has the option to just mount an Air Tag as well.

We spotted Gamux's prototype World Cup bike as we explored the halls. The bike uses a Pinion gearbox and features a 63-degree headangle and 460mm reach. Currently, the bike weighs 18.5kg (40.1 lb) in a mullet setup.

 Scott and Bold are really working hard to create the most proprietary and worst serviceable bike of all times. Thank god someone invented the cable through headset shit, else they would've had to come up with that aswell

 If you think this isn't on purpose I have some news for you. Making bikes hard to service from a home mechanic just closes the loop for them just like Auto Dealers and Phone companies tried. There will need to be a right to repair laws for bikes soon.

 @OnTheRivet: hmm bikes are a little different because most of the components come from different manufacturers. A frame company don't have anything to do with servicing the rear shock. Of course individual companies can do it internally on their own products, but I'm not sure how a frame maker would benefit from deliberately making the shock harder to access. In this case I think it's just putting form before function, which is not what I would want in a bike but it's not particularly sinister either.

 Bought a Nicolai/Geometron, do not regret it. Literally built to be as easy to deal with as possible. All cables fixed to the outside of the frame, all bearings press in enduro units, and ultimately customisable.

 That Knog bike tracker caught my eye. Seems like a simpler and more affective solution to tracking your bike when compared to the other things I've seen recently. If not too pricey upon release, I might snag one

 I’m intrigued as well. As long as setup and removal are pretty quick for the owner but not the thief. I could see myself throwing this on my bike in the garage after each ride, or on the rack when I stop for lunch, just for some extra peace of mind.

 On their website, it costs 95 AUD, so $65 USD, and the alarm is armed or disarmed from bluetooth on your phone. Seems pretty reasonable imo

 Yeah I'm not sure about the form factor (that looks like it makes your water bottle mounts no longer capable of holding a bottle? Or if it sandwiches in between, it won't work for some bike where the bottle *just* fits).

Concept-wise it is awesome though. Hidden under the seat or something would be great.
Arm/disarm from your phone. Awesome.

 A bike alarm. That will receive the same attention as a home or car alarm. Ie. none. And if anyone does react, most likely they will just spectate.

 @ilovedust: I work at an office were sometimes bikes get stolen. There's a courtyard that is used as a bike parking area. If the alarm goes of I would assume that I'd be at the bike parking area quick enough. I think it makes a lot of sense if you are close by.

 Disappointing. Where are the folding cargo bikes with ABS, where are the downhill trikes. Instead we get some fool taking photos of taped up battery hatches and a banana. I want a refund.

 Apple really need to do a version of the airtag where you can plug in an external antenna, so then you could have an antenna wire embedded in the top layer of the e.g. the underside of the downtube and the airtag itself hidden inside the frame (and accessed via the snack hatch).

Essentially any solution that makes the antenna only removable by destroying the frame and the airtag only accessible with a load of faff (but still accessible so its battery can eventually be changed).

Ebike motor makers could be building them into the bike electronics too.

 Clothing probably not meant for Mountainbiking?

- white, lightgrey, rose
- too short legs
- flimsy looking like the jerseys or way too warm but still not useful against the elements like those flannels or the bright colored dungarees

Is this for riding bropeds to the next cafe?
Or very environmental friendly single-use and throw away when dirty clothing?

 that bold bike is on of the most agressive looking setups ive ever seen. Tops the Nicolai bike or at same level. Cant believe that 6 months ago my bike was my favorite GOD DAM!

 Tucking all the bits away looks cool, sucks in every other way. I've learned to fish cables through frames. I've never had a problem with creaky press-fit BBs, but hiding the rear shock and tucking the cables and hoses in the bars and headset is just a PITA.

This is design for a look over optimal engineering. Wish more companies would build bikes to function first, look cool (or whatever) second.

Then again, looking at the PB comments, loads of Gumbys have raging hardons for bikes that look good first...........

 Really? I want my bicycle's aesthetics to call to mind a nice hot bowl of split pea soup with ham. Nothing says "peak performance" like boiled peas! I wish they'd anodize the stanchions that color too.

Most people say it’s a pretty lovely shock - some small hick-ups in the first batch when it was a new model, but Manitou were fast to make the needed small changes for it to perform flawlessly.

 I've had a great time on the one I have for the past year or so. The base tune it comes with has plenty of room to dial it in to your preferences. I have it paired with a Mezzer Pro on the front and they complement each other perfectly. I also clocked the cheater lever on it so it can't leave party mode. I don't get along with climb switches very well lol.
