Final Results: EWS La Thuile 2018

How loose is Stage 5

Highlights of day 2 in La Thuile included all sorts of bad luck for riders with enough punctures, destroyed wheels, and brake mishaps to go around. Starting off the day on stage 6, Ravanel continued her domination and Martin Maes took the stage win by 7 seconds over Sam Hill. Eddie Masters, who's having an epic weekend here in Italy, crossed in 3rd, but stayed 2nd overall headed into the next stage. Martin Maes took the win on stage 4 as well, bumping Eddie down to third in the overall. In the women's field, Cecile Ravanel took the stage 4 win. Less lucky was Melanie Pugin who walked away from a tough crash, but did not continue racing. For stage 5, concerns over weather prompted another course alteration and it became a 30-second sprint, which Veronika Bruchle and Matt Simmonds took the wins on. With just one stage left, the second round of stage 6, Cecil lead the overall by a massive margin, which she retained crossing the finish line to take the win. On the men's side, Maes won the stage while Hill won the race. Stay tuned for round 6 in Whistler in August!

Eddie was soo close to getting second until that dickhead Willie Maes decided to start hitting home runs. Sam Hill mopping the floor with all these guys as usual.

15th place for Sam Blenkinsop not a bad result, beating plenty of full time enduro racers.

Sam Hill is everything that’s right about enduro. #legend

Ravanel is 74s faster than Hill? :O

Cecile you f*cking legend!

(I know a stage got cancelled for the women..)
  • 8 0
She could have done that stage in 74 seconds. Easily
  • 4 3
Interesting that no one seems to notice this outstanding fact.
  • 2 2
it is not a fact, something must be wrong or not explained as the times are not realistic by far.

Women did not race stage 1, which took 9 min to sam hill.
  • 1 0
 Why didn't they race?
  • 1 0
@ibishreddin: one of the men’s vorbei seriously injured and they had to delay the rest of the men’s race so far, there was not time for the women’s race. No idea who got I hired tho

Sam Motherfckin Hill. The Thunder from Down Under takes another one! Good on ya, man! #flatpedalswinmedals.

Also. Eddie f*cking Masters. What a performance!

Really incredible for Jesse to get 4th while still recovering from the busted clavicle and for Yoann to get 8th in his first time back to the EWS in so long.
  • 6 0
Go Noga!!! after a very tough first day of racing, she was able to push some more on the challenging second day, i'm utterly impressed!!! Such a talented rider
  • 5 2
Knowing that second place is incredible in most instances. One has to feel badly for Martin. Two years chasing Richie and now two years chasing Sam. Hopefully his breakthrough is coming (before the likes if Adrien, Eliot and other young guns come into their own).
  • 8 1
Hes still in his early 20s. No need to hurry. Hes got lots of time and he needs it. Won some stages and finished top ten(I think) during his first year in elite after being champ in junior on previous year. Then could not get a good result every year after that due to crash or mechanical. Hopefully he can podium at the end of this season.
  • 3 0
I would do more Dh if I were him...
  • 3 0
@ugez: If you're talking about Maes, he never competed as a junior in EWS (even though he was of age). He raced in Open division from Day 1. He's wicked fast. And will win soon.
  • 2 0
@DanielDunnPhoto: I stand corrected. Smile But yeah, hes the first rider that proves EWS is not for DH retirees.
  • 2 0
While I totally respect his decision to stay home for the birth of his child, I have to say that Wallner’s absence was notable. Not only does his overall standings take a dive after a great breakthrough season, the entire Ibis team seemed to be lower in the rankings—which could be inferred as a testament to his leadership on the team raising everyone’s performance. I hope his family is doing well and he returns to the sport soon.

 eddieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
  • 6 2
So how much more does Sam need for the overall? It must be getting awfully close.
  • 1 0
One race without points and he cold be second (with Oton winning).
  • 5 0
Yeaaaaah Rocky Team! Jesse ,Remi and Andreane all kicking ass!
  • 7 4
Not followed ews for a while. Whats up with richie rude and jared graves nowadays?
  • 63 8
Well Graves rides a Specialized and Rude doesn't win when it's wet like this weekend.
  • 12 6
@Euskafreez: So that's why Loic and Finn are so slow!
  • 22 2
Juggy1985: If you genuinely want to know? The level has been raised. Lots of new guys coming into the sport, and a rather fast old one. It's also a mental game so if you have enough crap races like Graves and Rude, you begin to doubt your own ability.

Graves never really picked up from where he left off at Yeti when he joined Specialized but it has little to do with the bike and everything to do with the pressure to perform from a larger $ contract. He's a super genuine guy and probably really wants to do well for his sponsors but as time goes by and the results don't come, the whole just gets deeper.

Graves is riding fakie this year as an EWS first, Rude is getting up to speed but Hill is too much, and Gwin has won every stage of every race wearing spandex.
  • 12 0
Today Rude crashed hard in the steepest section of the first stage of the day just in front of me. He made a f*cking hole in the ground (I'm not even joking) and the bike got smashed against a tree. I'm pretty sure he got a flat tire and a bent rotor in the process, and he retired from the race. Dunno about Graves though, today he was looking ok, it's just that everyone was going insanely fast

@fecalmaster: What are you on today, bro?

Did you hit the 'shrooms too hard?

@jclnv: ehhh, I'd wager it has something to do with the bike. Ridden both extensively, the Yeti works a lot better than the Stumpy when it comes to actually eating bumps.
  • 5 3
@fecalmaster: My sense of humor is alive and well. No need to be an outright a-hole on here (on multiple posts, at that) just because your humor isn't coming across clearly.

And I've been MTBing since road and MTB frames were one and the same, you?

  • 3 3
Why does Cecile have a shorter time than Hill? Did the women have raced shorter stages?
  • 1 0
 Course alterations due to weather.

The last stage on day one was the annual bikini shoot, next time in Whistler the men have annual banana hammock contest.
  • 1 0
The last stage on day one for the women got deleted due to a course hold to rescue an injured rider. That's what the live race feed was telling yesterday...

If DH is UFC then EWS is clearly Bellator with the talent gap
  • 1 0
True story, you have no idea what your talking about.
  • 1 0
@ischiller: Unless you're bangin' wheels with Sam Hill, you and I have the same knowledge of what I'm talking about.
  • 1 0
@almacigatrailrider: Again, false assumption. I've worked with UFC fighters. Many fighters train with other fighters from other promotions. Not every fighter from AKA or Jackson Wink fights for the UFC. Yet they train together. And there are several fighters in Bellator came from the UFC and vice versus.

A more apt comparison is kick boxing to MMA. Or boxing to MMA. There is crossover, however Downhill and Enduro are two different sports. Saying somehow EWS riders lack talent comparably shows how little you know.
