Denim Riding Dungarees Are a Thing Now, Apparently

Despite the fact that most clothing brands now offer lightweight, breathable, durable and stylish kits, there's something about denim that simply refuses to quit in mountain biking. Whether that's slopestyle riders spinning and flipping in skin-tight jeans or Johannes Von Klebelsberg shredding World Cup tracks in his blue Levis, for some riders it's not all about wicking stretch fabrics.

Ripton & Co is one company that still believes in the benefits of denim and, hot on the heels of its tech jorts released in 2019, the brand now also offers performance overalls. Described as being able to, "hold up to the rigors of bikes, skis, or pouring a foundation," these overalls offer a warmer alternative to the brand's jorts and should have no problem holding up to the scuffs and scrapes that go hand in hand with mountain biking.

The overalls have an updated shape that is suited to bike riding and are made from a stretch denim that should keep them more comfortable when pedalling. The brand believes they can even be used for skiing on warmer days (25°F+), although they recommend wearing jorts under the overalls on colder mornings for extra crotch warmth.

@2-1RacingUK: It seems you've accidentally conflated two pillars of American red-neckery (Talladega and Winnebago), and in the process brilliantly created a single hillbilly mega brand. I hereby state my intention to trademark the 'Talabago' brandname immediately for the express purpose of profiteering from good ol' boys all across the Deep South who won't be able to resist its hypnotically powerful southern heritage connotations.

@ninjatarian: I think you're on to something. Take the Fox Ranger short for example, have it ride higher and add shoulder straps. They could add more pockets around the back/side areas, would be super comfy and would cover your ass crack better. Sounds like it'd be a good product.

Either you drink really cheep beer, or I drink too much.

 @Unrealityshow:
PBR 30 Rack around $20 with tax
$125 gets you 180 PBR’s
You + 2 Buddies drink 6 beers each a night
That’s 10 nights of beer drinking after riding.
I’d say that’s much better value than some stretchy denim.

 Hey Pinkbikers,

Happy MLK day! We should clarify that the Drift Overalls were not designed specifically for cycling. We live in the mountains and use them for skiing, backcountry skiing, lounging, etc. (and they perform exceptionally well in these categories). A South African website dubbed them “biking Dungarees” which is a stretch, as they are built with a fleece-lined bi-component that is quite insular.

The women’s overalls do have a very tapered cut around the calve / lower leg and will work remarkably well for cooler days in the bike park / dirt jumping. The men’s cuff we have adjusted from the sample photos (featured here) to be more tapered and better for ripping around town without getting stuck in your chain. But again we designed these with our winter, off-the-bike months in mind. From a design perspective when we look at men’s overalls options we have classic workwear (heavy / stiff) and urban inspired (Levi’s / Urban) but nothing existed that took cues from our outdoor lifestyle, with both stretch, resilience, and style. We took inspo from modern ski technology with high-quality Duraflex buckles and elastic straps that hold up and don’t get cold in single digit weather. The Cosy denim represents the latest in what can be accomplished with hybrid fabric technology, and is the direction we’re pushing Ripton & Co. (to build performance denim products that are nothing like what else is out there). Sorry for any confusion. We were not approached by PinkBike regarding this press, fact checked, or solicited in any way.

You can reach us at: info@jortly.com
  • 2 1
“Inspo.” That’s amazing. I’m going to use that every day from now on.
  • 2 0
i do love me some bibs for 'boarding. good luck!
  • 4 0
If only they weren't so insular, in a modern world that's all about inclusiveness.
  • 6 0
@Ripton : Whatever marketing lesson(s) you (or whoever you actually are) learned over the last year, good work. Part of me was hoping for @JortLord to arrive and give me something to watch for a couple of days.

Despite last year's release and the PB Comments disaster, you're still out and about making leg coverings. Nice job.

Bonus: no tundra violations so far.
  • 1 0
Sooooo, do they feature the aforementioned "taint murder nub" or not?
  • 3 0
@kd7000: it’s more like a “taint tickler nub” large enough to notice but not big enough to get in the way
  • 1 0
 @iammarkstewart: thanks for noticing. Smile
  • 5 0
Are we just going to gloss over that no one from Pinkbike approached Ripton, mislabeled the product and its performance claims and then posted this poor excuse for an article?

What about the issue with riding in all jeans, which is the "nub" where the 4 panels overlap under your taint. Fine if you're the Denim Destroyer or doing slope style where you never sit down. What about the rest of us? I don't care for grinding up a climb on that.
  • 10 3
@ReformedRoadie: someone needs to toughen their taint.

Pinkbike comment section filled with people who think they look less ridiculous in whatever they’re wearing. You’re on a pedal bike wearing a helmet- if you’re over 16 years old, you’re a dork. You’re on a website called Pinkbike. You are not cool now, and if you ever were, that time has passed.
  • 22 0
Hurtling down a mountain with a helmet has nothing to do with cool. As for cool, I know I am. I don't care what my kids say.

  • 6 1
@browner: it’s not the helmet that makes you a dork, or less of a dork than the dude in bike jeans. You, him, me, we are all equally dorky and ridiculous looking pedaling a bike around the woods and thinking we look cool. We don’t. XC Lycra, flannel shirts, MX pajamas, Patagucci/Rapha: it’s all equally ridiculous. Pick a “look” in whatever sub-genre of bike-dork, but know that none of them are cool.

exactly £25 for pair of stretch jeans from NEXT - one pair for commuting per year, one pair for faffing about in the park or forest. and this is in UK's winter. they are coming in about 15 colours and slim and super slim and straight and tapered version. name it Smile very abrasion resistant as I was crashing in them few times. great deep pockets. can be used with belts or braces and you can buy size or two bigger if you have big cojones Wink
  • 13 4
I'll admit it- I totally preordered a pair already. Less for biking and more for camping, festivals, and the occasional Gaper Day on the slopes. Yeah, I can get a pair of Carhartt overalls for far cheaper but they don't stretch at all. If they are well built, they'll me worth the money

And all you haters- how much did you spend on a Troy Lee Designs flannel shirt so you could look like you are a sick North Shore rider?
  • 4 0
Nobody wears Troy Lee on the shore. @ride_NF or GTFO.
  • 12 4
All checks out. Someone hipster enough to unironically ride in a dungaree overall would definitley also ride an Ibis. Or maybe a Yeti. Anyways, thats what you call target focussed advertising.

  • 1 0
If these things don't come with a lifetime subscription and provision of anti fungal cream then they should. They'd be the sweatiest, nastiest things to ride in. You'd have to boil them in bleach every week to kill what's growing in them.
  • 1 0
I get that some people who are fans of riding and fans of wearing overalls would like something like this but this needs more thought put into it.

I get denim isn't the best for high output sports especially in warmer temps but you have to admit tons of riders still wear denim shorts and pants while biking. Especially urban riders and DJ's

But my biggest gripe is why would you make the leggings baggy and long?! At least make it less baggy down the ankles and maybe sow the bottom cuffs so they look like they're cuffed but won't actually come undone during rowdier rides.

Instead of denim I would replace it with material more suited for riding but make it look denimish. But hey that's just my opinion.
  • 2 0
wowwww if these were less than $50 I'd say that this is a great thing. But this is just rich-person-trying-to-look-like-a-poor-person fashion and I'm definitely not here for that.
  • 1 0
If you take away that pinkbike is dubbing these as biking overalls, or even the marketing that they're somehow athletic - they're actually pretty damn cool. Would be great for working outside in the winter while preventing buttcrack exposure. Equivalent carhartt are probably $120 and don't look nearly as nice. That said, I don't think I could pull these off.
  • 1 0
Spot on! These weren’t actually designed to be biked in, and are absolutely incredible for apres, camping, and general outdoor shenanigans
  • 1 0
OMFG here we go again . more MTB specific fashion .
So, Blue jeans WERENT a thing back in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 20s , but NOW they are ? LOFL !
