Press Release: The Back Forty

June 10, 2023

The third edition of Whistler's increasingly infamous Back Forty race is happening on June 10, 2023. Last year, the event raised over $12,000 towards new trail construction in Whistler by WORCA and mountain bike programming for the Indigenous Life Sport Academy. We hope this fundraiser can continue to contribute a substantial amount of positivity and cash to the Whistler riding community through WORCA and ILSA.

Get ready for three big stages, awesome trails and a wicked après. All for a good cause.

Register for the Back Forty 2023.

Can Anyone Beat Lief Rogers?

Canadian XC phenom Lief Rogers is unbeaten so far at the Back Forty. In 2021, he edged out Karsten Madsen despite a flat tire on stage 1. In 2022, Lief took the top spot ahead of the legendary Geoff Kabush. Looking ahead to 2023, we expect some high caliber racing from start to finish!

2022 was a killer course, fun format and good racing with fun races within races for all participants. Shout out to WORCA for trying to fill what the S2S lost with the ending of NIMBY. Can’t wait for the 2023 edition! XC is the new Enduro.

Glad you enjoyed the event! 2022 was a big step forward for the Back Forty and we're going to make 2023 an even better version. We've locked in Meadow Park for apres again and our sponsors are just as stoked as our riders. Keep your eyes peeled for a course reveal in early 2023.

I'll never forget bonking incredibly in the inagural back 40, crashing on that mega-off camber rock in the wet no-flow-zone and lying on the ground with horrible leg cramps as soon as i hit the ground. Who know the stage was another 30 minutes from the top of Howler LOL?

Yeah, the course was a bit ambition in year 1. Sorry about that. 2023's course will be 66.6% identical to 2022.

@WORCA: I thought 2021 was close to perfect. The difficulty felt similar to what Nimby 50 was. 2022 looked tame. A bit of gnarly tech climbing and less road/flow climbs would make it even better! (No flow zone had this). Maybe a few more challenging descents as well, Rockwork Orange? Make it epic!

@jankslayer: on paper 2022 should've been a lot easier than 2021, but I'm not sure my legs agreed! haha

Year 1, solid first effort. Year 2, moving toward epic. Year 3, hold my beer, it's gonna' be a gooder.

Sick race! Heard they're running a Cheakamus stage this year...

Please make it an honest 40km (not including the transfer stages) too

Why? The name Back Forty doesn't refer to the distance of the race but the location of it. It comes from the expression "the back forty", which refers to an area near where you live. Kind of like "backyard" but bigger.

The term comes from the Homestead Acts (1860s USA) that granted farmers a quarter section; a section was nominally 1 square mile containing 640 acres, a quarter section was 160 acres, and the quarter section was itself subdivided into four quarter-quarter sections of 40 acres each: two front forty and two back forty.

Also, 40km of singletrack in Whistler would be too hard for most riders to enjoy, too large of a course for us volunteer organizers to manage and would create such a large gap between the fastest and slowest finishers that the event would take like 14 hours. If you want to put on this type of death-march race, I'd be happy to facilitate. Send me an email at events@worca.com

Love, Quinn
