Balance Bike World Champs

We are stoked to announce that Pinkbike will host the Balance Bike World Championships being held at the GT Bicycles Malverns Classic, the UK's biggest MTB festival, and party. This exciting and fun competition will help introduce mountain biking to the next generation of young rippers, showcasing the stars of tomorrow (and today)!

Bringing together and celebrating groups of young riders, from up and coming pros to youngsters starting out on their balance bike, are the goals of the Pinkbike Groms program that was launched in 2020.
Groms (under the age of 16) are encouraged to submit their content on Instagram using the #pbgroms hashtag for a chance to be featured on the Pinkbike Instagram account and win exclusive stickers and merch.

GT Bicycles Balance Bike Cup

Riders Ready, let's go racing!! Children aged from 2 to 5 years of age can race in this fun and competitive competition that is supported by the Little Rider Co and G-Form. Race categories are split between both boys and girls as well as age on the day. There are three days of racing at Eastnor Deer Park, near Ledbury, Herefordshire. Choose from Quad Eliminator, Slalom and Downhill, or take the plunge and enter every race to be in with the chance to be crowned World Champion!

Friday 27th of August – Balance Bike Quad Eliminator.

Four riders on the BMX style start gate, elbows out and go! This is action-packed head to head racing down into the main arena. Riders will fire out of the four-man start gate at the same time, battling elbows high into the first corner. The course will be fast and flowing with plenty of passing places for the skilled and the brave. The top two racers from each round will go through to the next heat, a simple elimination format as we head to the super finals!

Saturday 28th of August – Balance Bike Slalom.

Racing one at a time down the slalom course, the race is against the clock! This is action-packed racing as riders fire out of the BMX style start gate and around the coloured gates. The fastest four from each category will go into the super finals.

Sunday 29th of August – Balance Bike Downhill.
Downhill is the Formula 1 of mountain bike racing. The purest form of racing with riders racing against the clock. The course will be fast and flowing with plenty of corners for the riders to showcase their skills.

My first thought was, "Oh man, there's gotta be a balance bike race category for adults." That would be hysterical.

@rrolly: I think you might be on to something. Next level chainless racing!
  • 21 0
I too have been crying out for a discipline where your balls = your suspension.
  • 6 4
@rrolly: isnt that pump track, adults that have taken balance bike riding very seriously

Maybe a new rule, have to stay sitting, wear a comically oversized helmet, shoes on the wrong feet, and flat turns?
Lemans style start, chug a beer, or a shot of tequila to start, and finish
The semi’s, quarters, and finals would get increasingly more enjoyable

Be good to one another!

@rrolly: no one would have any balls by the end. gee i wonder why they only make balance bikes for little kids?!?!?
  • 1 0
You’d still get rocked... and you know it
  • 1 0
If I identify as a 5 year old, can I compete?
  • 1 0
@rrolly: There must be an Aaron Gwin category!
  • 1 0
@kanoakea-mtb: Every bike is a balance bike if you are brave enough!
  • 1 0
@Davec85: sounds like a legal defence
  • 2 0
@Notmeatall: correct. And if you take the transmission and BB off a baby bike you get a free balance bike, which can turn seemlessly into a push bike whenever they achieve balance. The result is 2-year old who learns how to pedal without training wheels.

My 2 year old is entered for the dual slalom. On a more serious note, a lot of these younger riders will have spent a significant time of their life living under lockdown, missing opportunities for play dates and sports clubs etc. I cannot wait to see my son shredding the dual slalom track and having fun!

 Same here.
My little lad (3 year old) asks me every weekend if it's bike racing day yet? He can't wait to just ride his bike with other children. Doing laps of the garden and local park got boring way back during the first lock down last April!
My daughter's not so heavily into bikes as her brother, but even she's asked if she can enter one of the races at the Classic this year..... hopefully they both catch the biking bug and we can get them having fun face-to-face with other children and away from the damn screens!!!!!

@BennyOC: The pump track literally saved my 3 year olds sanity this year during lockdown.
  • 4 0
@lewiscraik My three year is rad on his glide bike. I showed him Saturday Sends two weeks ago and we spent an afternoon making videos on our home track. He wants me to send them in. I told him if he crashes we could also send it in for Friday Fails.

Kid fires out of the start gate and ........ sees a stick they want to take home, all dreams of the parent crying with pride as their young one takes first place ruined in the name of collecting sticks.

KIds live life on their own terms. :-)

Good luck to any parents with dreams.

That would be my young twins. Charging out of the start ramp then ‘ooh, doggy’ and off they’d ride to find someone’s dog, or cake, or daisy, or shiny object on the floor.
  • 3 0
@CustardCountry: Herding cats would be easier.
  • 5 0
My first thought exactly. Good call.

Will there be a recognition for over parenting, tiger momming or just parents being general arseholes while they force their kid to compensate for the parent’s shortcomings?

I'd rather watch this than adults racing TBH. Alternate with wiener dog racing and I'm all set.

As a Dad with an 11yo who had a balance bike when he was 2, this is cool. The MTB world is really embracing the youth and the future looks bright. Exciting times!!!
