Curvy top tubes ruin entire bikes for me.
  • 104 14
Electric-y down tubes are what do it for me.

I fixed the Ibis, should I fix this one too? www.pinkbike.com/photo/20600723

It looks like it crashed head first into a wall.

If you think about how waves and momentum move then curvy makes more sense. There are no straight lines in nature.
  • 14 1
@Kmccann137: There are straight lines literally everywhere in nature.

If you do FEA on the basic conditions a mountain bike requires, there are very few parts of the frame that are stronger with curves.

With hydroforming aluminum, dramatic curves mean thin sidewalls and weak points where the curve is the most dramatic. Image search "Broken kona operator" to see this in action.
  • 1 0
@hamncheez: Designs go back and forth throughout history. Cars are a good example. Curvy then straight....and repeat.
  • 3 3
@hamncheez: never said anything about strength rather I said movement. Your point has nothing to do with mine. Also what straight line is made by nature?
  • 1 0
 @hamncheez: please do lmao
  • 3 0
All these generic aluminum EP8 ebikes that are coming out are all the same and all so boring. Give me a steel ebike, or some cool new drive system like Rocky Mountain. At least the big S has carved out a unique niche for themselves.
  • 1 0
Was trying to get my head around what I didnt like. Thank you.
  • 3 1
@Kmccann137: I’ll back you up on no straight lines in nature.
  • 4 0
@Kmccann137: i mean i get where you're vibing from bruh, but like, i was looking at this tree man, and like i was like, whoaaaaaa!....that tree looks pretty straight man! So i looked at it again through my wavy gravy crystal to check on it's true energy and dang if she ain't a right up straight beauty! ( All joking aside, and "straight" being somewhat relative.... There's two examples off the top of my head. I'd put good money on it there's plenty more. )
  • 2 0
Someone should invent a headset system to block the fork from knocking into straight downtubes! Oh wait....
  • 2 0
 @Kmccann137: The horizon?
  • 2 0
@hamncheez: Specifying EP8 motor is alrady lazy AF. Far from the best system out there, it's just "easy".
  • 1 1
@lostlunchbox: ha! Honestly the statement is true regardless of whether the tree looks straight or not, in measurement it aint. Now the statement is even more true when you talk about the movement of natural objects, they never move in a straight line. A crystal may appear straight but obviously if you ever found one in nature they aren’t.
  • 1 1
@lostlunchbox: also if you think a piece of wood is straight try building something out of wood
  • 2 0
@Kmccann137: I build stuff out of wood every day. Often seems pretty straight to me. I did say straight is "somewhat relative". If one needs to be truly pendantic, at some level literally *nothing* natural OR man-made is truly straight, so the point is moot.

They have the E-Troy; but about the E-Tu Brutus?
  • 25 0
Can’t help but think the Achill-E-s would make a good addition to the E-Troy too..
  • 26 1
These references are all Greek to me.
  • 10 1
Careful, these bikes can give a rider Edipus complex...
  • 7 0
They'll look good hanging off the back of your Toyota Priam.
  • 10 0
@nyhc00: especially troy and brutus since neither are Greek haha,
  • 2 0
The E-ripidies...would have a lot of drama associated with it.
  • 3 0
Don't forget one for the ladies, the h-E-len: the bike that launched a thousand hips.
  • 11 0
@neoides: Give him some slack, he was just Roman around the comments and was unprepared.
  • 4 3
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… it should be “Trojan and Spartan” or “Troy and Sparta”.
  • 10 0
 E-nough with the puns.
  • 2 0
@sngltrkmnd: they couldn't use Trojan and that top tube shape without potential copyright infringement.
  • 1 2
HAHA THESE ARE classic how about the e-coolguy and its just a picture of me on the bike? lolol yeah baby that would be awesome sauce. or maybe e-cology! hsahahahahahaha
  • 1 1
You'd think they would have fixed how ugly the last ones were, i think they made it worse

Where is the throw-up emoji on my keyboard?
  • 3 2
Windows logo key plus period '"." buuutttt Pinkbike in their infinite wisdom doesnt allow emojis or GIFs which would make comment section significantly more interesting.
  • 24 1
@wilsonians: pinkbike has its own emojis but not a lot of people know the keystrokes. Just remove spaces!

Can these really even be called a "Spartan" and a "Troy" when the suspension design is so fundamentally different than the bikes they're based off of??! Especially the Spartan... it's a high pivot bike FFS!

This just reaks of doing whatever the f*ck they needed to do to jam a motor onto a bike.

"But what about the 3 years we spent designing, testing and refining the suspension platform"... "f*ck it, just get that motor in there!! There's sweet sweet e-bike money to be made!!"
  • 6 6
Your comment doesn't add up. Why would Devinci, who's been making high bikes for 3 decades, risk making a bike that rides like shit when they have so much experience designing, and building bikes that handle well? It's not their first ebike, and they've obviously have some engineering know how with the well reviewed Spartan HP. So how does changing the suspension platform for an EMTB magically equate to 'garbage' without a single review?
  • 6 1
@CaptainSnappy: I didn’t say it was garbage. I just said it’s not a Spartan. And strange that they’re so willing to get rid of their highly engineered, tested and well thought out suspension design for the sake of adding a motor.
  • 2 4
@islandforlife: Does it matter? No. it's just a name. @cyclesdevinci wants to make an easy to understand hierarchy connection between their well-established analog and e-offerings: enduro (big travel) = Spartan, trail (less travel) = Troy.

Secondly, why don't you ask @cyclesdevinci why they changed the suspension layout. Wouldn't want to do that, hey? Just in case you might learn something.
  • 4 1
@CaptainSnappy: Ya you're right... might as well just call all their bikes Spartan... actually why even give them a name?

WTF??!!

Great idea! Hey @cyclesdevinci can you shoot me your recycled marketing-speak gobbly gook for why you re-used the same bike names for obviously very, very different bikes? Thanks a bunch!
  • 17 2
I remember when Devinci made good looking bikes.
  • 6 3
Hero to zero in ten years. The Wilson 5 was Everest. Looks like they are trying to reach the bottom of the Mariana Trench with these bikes.
  • 1 0
I remember that too. I had a 26” Wilson. Great looking bike.
  • 2 1
@jaame: exactly, makes me want to get rid if my devinci
  • 4 5
@grapekoolaid: Ford, GM, Toyota, Honda, VW, Mazda, etc. make EVS and PHEV's. Based on that esteemed logic, are you gonna sell your car too because they don't only make ICE vehicles? No one's putting a gun to your head forcing you to buy an ebike,
  • 7 0
@CaptainSnappy: I don't think the problem is with e-bikes, I think the problem is that these bikes are ugly.
  • 4 0
@CaptainSnappy: I would love a turbo kenevo. These bikes look like shit. The aesthetic is terrible. I'm sure they are good bikes to ride.
  • 3 3
@CaptainSnappy: cars have always had engines. Bikes haven't.
E bikes suck
  • 9 1
$7800 MRSP on the website. Seems like a lot for an alloy bike. Scott ransom similar build $1300 less. Or $200 more and you can get the top of the line YT decoy with the same motor but with all the blingy squishy things.
  • 13 8
YT has a 540W battery. Its a pointless bike
  • 4 6
@Jordmackay: Many people would disagree, especially those that just want to DH short steep gnar, so they still get 4-10 days riding up on a single charge.
  • 6 0
@Jordmackay: Canyon's new spectral can take a 900W and is full carbon (if that's your bag) for less
  • 5 0
@Jordmackay: A few months ago i would agree with you on that. I have bullit and got a killer deal on a extra 504wh battery for a backup compared to the stock 630wh. While I did notice around 2-4 miles decrease and about 600-800 ft elevation loss when maxing it out. It was totally fine for the majority of my rides. Not all e-bikers are going to kill a battery every ride. 13-15 miles with 3-4k of climbing is plenty for most.
  • 2 0
@Jordmackay: lol, I get 6+ dh runs on all of the best / hard to access trails per charge. What more do I need? We don’t have alpine epics here in socal…and frankly, even being fairly fit, hitting 6 laps hard I’m pretty tired. Don’t think I’d want any more juice.
  • 1 0
 @nvranka: Buy a kenevo SL
  • 2 0
@Howieday91: does anybody not ride these bikes in turbo mode all the time, i know i do. i almost always burn a whole 625 bosch battery every ride and i have a second for the weekends and bike trips so i can get a full day in. at first i thought i wouldnt need a bosch 750 battery but now i think it would be real nice actually
  • 7 0
I can't stand the bullshit range on the official website. Up to 135km on one charge, wtf ! If you buy an e-enduro it is definitely not to ride 135km on a bicycle lane wind in the back with road tires. At least I hope! Why not being honest and give an average range and elevation in real mountainbike condition
  • 9 0
Love a geo table which doesnt bother using the same codes as the diagram. :haha
  • 14 5
Exo tyres on a 170/180mm travel bike.

Get to f*ck
  • 7 2
I read exo+ front and DD rear on the website for the espartan. Great balance of weight and strength imo
  • 2 0
@manual09: yup, i have switched mine to DH Assegai's both front and back, with cush cores as that is my go to but spec is good and I often run DD as well.
  • 2 10
flag olafthemoose (May 25, 2022 at 8:05) (Below Threshold)
@manual09: not on an ebike. A 170mm e bike will fold a dd tire so fast it's not even funny. DH casing is a must
  • 5 0
@olafthemoose: All depends on the rider and the terrain.
  • 7 3
The assumption in your comment is that eBikers ride aggressively enough to actually warrant 170/180. I don't know if that is a very common thing.
  • 4 0
10K$ CAD is on the expensive side for the E-Troy GX build and I guess the E-Spartan will be even more expensive for the GX build.

Quick comparison with another enduro aluminum ebike as the Giant Reign E+0 with carbon wheels/cranks/bars,Fox factory suspensions & X01 drivetrain is priced at 9499$ CAD.

Poor looks & value Devinci.
  • 1 0
How much is a motocross bike in Canada? New showroom?
  • 2 1
 @Compositepro: $10,000 - 12,000 for a 250 or 450 four stroke. Yamaha 2 stroke is $8200.
  • 1 0
 @JayUpNorth: thanks man
  • 9 1
Haibike: We make the pig ugliest e-bike out there.

Devinci: Hold my beer
  • 11 9
Seems kind of spendy. For that kind of money, you could buy a really nice mountain bike and still be able to look yourself in the mirror and recognize that you're an athlete, and not feel like you were doing something inappropriate in public.
  • 2 0
Interesting how the E- Troy and Spartan frames aren’t made in Quebec but the other E-mountain bikes Devinci makes are, and those Quebecois frames are a bit more price-competitive. Maybe they’re at production capacity?
  • 4 6
 Probably off-the-shelf asian e-bike frames.
  • 2 0
The battery alone are in the range of $1200.
  • 1 0
MTBs, eMTBs, MotoXs or Mopeds, it all two-wheel funSmile
The bike industry is moving in the wrong direction with the eMTBs.
If bike manufacture want to grow the sport of eMTBing, they should offer entry level priced eMTB, $7600 for they base model:/
  • 4 4
If I buy a bike with a 7k cheapest option, I'd at least want to be able to take it with me anywhere I go, and have higher specs than GX drivetrain and base/mid tier shock and forks.
I'm sure there's a market for eebs like these, but it's not me.
  • 1 0
I remember when full suspension first came out and all the "hardtail purists" (including myself) would comment "Where's the gas tank???" Now I own hardtails, full suspension, and now an E-bike (YT Decoy).....go figure......
