Our Spartan 29 makes its official global entry this week. But if you’ve been following its extensive orbital path, you won’t be shocked to learn that the new bike has already been heavily exercised on the track.

Devinci athletes Keegan Wright and Damien Oton have tested various setups over the past several months, putting prototypes through the kind of diabolical bike bootcamp you’d expect from an insane Kiwi and a scary-fast Frenchman.

Back in April, Oton piloted a pre-release Spartan 29 to a 3rd place overall finish during the second round of the 2018 Enduro World Series, in Manizales, Colombia. He charged back at the epic Megavalanche Alpe d’Huez where he took the win. He’d made the leap from 27.5 to the bigger wheel configuration following the team camp in Italy, where the bike’s enhanced stability at warp speeds, thanks to 165mm rear and upgraded 170mm travel in the fork, made him a believer.

bigquotes“I wasn’t sure about it at first because I didn’t feel as fast as on my 27.5 race bike,” Oton says. “But when we started clocking timed runs, I realized I was actually a lot faster.”

Enhanced wheel size, on the other hand, has improved his long-distance endurance. “During an EWS race,” Oton continues, “any energy you can save by being comfortable and by carrying more speed through rough sections on 29s makes a huge difference at the end of the day.”

For more details on the not-so-secret Spartan 29, check out the specs on devinci.com. No surprise, this well-versed bike means business.

I don't think anyone was "finally" waiting for another four bar linkage bike that is pretty much the same as any other. Let's be honest.
  • 15 3
Harsh, but errrr difficult to argue with
  • 25 14
The bike with four bar linkage and superboost that no one was waiting for... I'll say it again. Dear superboost, die.
  • 10 10
 Pretty much the same.
Except made in Canada.
I’ll bet there’s a lot of people saying finally.
  • 34 4
I don't know why friggin everybody gets butthurt when we get a bike that's pretty okay looking released? the only thing i can ever see complaining about is the price, but hey- that's inflation for ya. either way, it's a new bike! stoke the f*** out!! throw a party ! pay for it all in 1's! call your ex and tell her why you broke up with her flat-azz!
bikes!!
trash the discontentment y'all we here for this sh** love it or hate it
  • 2 2
@projectnortheast: but when you have a superboost plus sized hardtail it lets you have some 29er fun for it as well
  • 14 6
@kubaner: Definitely not made in Canada. Designed in Canada.
  • 3 0
@projectnortheast: So you want the 150/157 standard to die?
  • 4 2
@IllestT: Is this even a four bar linkage?
  • 11 0
@RoboDuck: alloy frames are made in Canada
  • 3 1
@TheOriginalTwoTone: We all know deep down 148 should've been the old 157 standard from the beginning, but ofcourse the industry did one over on all of us and mass produced 148 so they could sell new bikes. Now that everyone's invested in high end wheelsets in 148 and plus is slowly being seen as the red headed stepchild that it is yes, I want it to die for trail bikes...
  • 2 1
@projectnortheast: not true. If it was as simple as wider=better I'm sure 157 would have taken off a long time ago.
Wider rear hubs are not without compromise, that's why 148 will probably remain for the foreseeable future
  • 2 0
@projectnortheast: I'd say 142 should have been skipped. 148 actually has some merits, but a lot of manufacturers lost sight of it in my opinion.

Originally everything I read was 148 was the widest they could go and keep narrow q factor. Too many manufacturers just wider on the Q as well.

I've had a 157 rear bike and my knees hated it.
  • 3 2
I'm not buying anything until the ultra mega boost spacing comes out next year at 165mm.
  • 2 0
@ShempHoward: ah ok, so your still riding a 26“ bike without a dropper and 3x9 gearing right?
  • 1 1
What's wrong with 3x? Wink Evil made a 430mm chainstay 29er bike with 2x on 142mm spacing and a tight 2.4 tire. Hope uses 130mm with that same spec. Once the front deraileur was dropped, you could design a bike with 2.5 tire clearance and a 135/142mm rear. But who makes new 142mm? 148mm and larger may make for stiffer wheels, but rim design/construction will always be the weak link. I'm a large pizza and a 6er of beer heavier than most riders on here and I have one bike with 3 seasons and over 1,200 miles on an aluminum 29er rim with a QR 135mm and it's rigid (and 3x10spd). Rocks and low tire pressure have added dings, but it's hanging in there. I've built 1,000's of wheels, it comes down to build style and rim selection. Still think 148mm was Sram's answer to their stock pile of horrible 24 hole rims. So my thoughts on super boost... was not necessary, but what choice do we have now?
  • 2 2
@Foxy87: Who, your instincts are terrible. You should walk around wearing your helmet every minute of the day.
  • 4 0
@TheOriginalTwoTone: 157 shouldnt make any difference to your knees if your riding a bike with a norma 73mm BB.
  • 1 0
 @PHeller: maybe he has a 430mm crankset? :-p
  • 1 0
@PHeller: Or he's rubbing his knees over the rear end, weird.
  • 60 18
Not keen on the seat post top tube junction.
  • 27 11
So I’m not the only one? Kills it for me.
  • 13 12
That is very odd looking and structurally????? I'm not going to find out personally.
  • 18 17
I scrolled down here looking for this comment. Looks terrible to me (especially as a structural engineer), and glad I'm not the only one.
  • 30 7
@srjacobs: You should apply at Devinci, I think they might have a few spots open after this one.
  • 134 10
@srjacobs: an engineer telling us he's an engineer, how unusual.
  • 76 6
@imho4ep: I'm a Proctologist, when can I schedule you to repair your hurt butt?
  • 11 1
@ShempHoward: haha, do you ride one of the "Brown trout" colored Santa Cruz s?
  • 5 3
Hopefully this misguided brown fad will end next year.
  • 6 1
 @imho4ep: this x100000000
  • 5 7
@imho4ep: just like every cab driver in Vancouver.
  • 3 0
@srjacobs: if you think about it full suspension bikes all have the same issue at that junction. The way this frame looks just really highlights it.
  • 3 1
The AL one looks much better. Just looks bad in Carbon.
  • 11 1
When the first Spartan came out, I questioned the look at first. But like a redesigned Toyota 4runner, it grew on me. Looks good, looks different than other bikes too.
  • 6 1
 Looks stiff and strong too
  • 5 3
What dafuq? Are you guys drunk?
  • 5 1
That kink in the top tube/seat tube is so unpleasing. There's a lot of good going on overall but with the limitless options carbon has I'm sure they easily could have smoothed out the "elbow"
  • 2 0
@RollinFoSho: I was trying not to lament over not owning a 4Runner Trail Edition/Overlanding Instagram Feed megapic cover model ....but no, you people just keep mentioning the damn thing.
  • 4 1
I thought the same thing when I first saw pictures, but in person it's honestly not that bad. One of my riding buddies got an aluminum one, and It has really grown on me.
  • 1 2
makes it look like a KHS
  • 3 3
@DarrenV: Their probably made in the same factory.
  • 3 0
Da-fook? Ya' never heard of a luggage handle?
  • 6 2
Devinci's bikes seem to get progressively worse looking every year. The 26er Wilson 4 was the best looking bike ever, in my opinion. The original Troy was pretty cool, the Spartan I almost bought one of. The new ones are just... no.
  • 6 2
Straight seat tube so any leangth post. Beefy rocker pivot and a handle. Looks like a devinci, rock on.
  • 1 0
@Trabes: Yupp, that and tubes are triangulated w/ long welds and smooth transitions (on AL at least). Carry on!
  • 39 2
157 is nice. In big descents you can rest your heel on the chainstay ;-)
  • 8 0
Just like a full suspension scooter
  • 25 4
Threaded bb. Would buy. Take note pretty much every other manufacturer.
  • 12 1
That akward moment when threads on a bottom bracket makes you forget every other flaws
  • 2 1
I think it’s meant as a joke - I mean, who would use a threaded BB because it’s hassle free, and then go for a trunnion Mount at the shock?
  • 22 6
4 bills for a frame. Moving up on SC and Yeti prices. Last year a carbon frame with the alloy rear was 2800. Times change I guess.
  • 1 1
MTB has increased in popularity quite a bit. Naturally demand goes up, and so do the prices.

Im rooting for ebikes left and right to be brought mainstream, cause that means the "mechanical" bikes are gonna get cheaper.
  • 1 3
@phops: yeah but production should also go up so prices should go down.

Regardless. Ain't paying 5k$ for gx garbage. I'm riding a devinci that I bought new, I love it but sorry, at those prices I'll quit the hobby before I buy new again.
  • 1 0
@phops: lol, what you're saying is mountain bikes are gonna get cheaper when mountainbiking will be forbiden ? not sure how it helps.
  • 15 1
Maybe there are things that this bike doesn’t look good in that people don’t like, but don’t forget that Devinci is a strong breed when it comes to MTB they just came back to the DH scene and Dak did awesome, Damien is Mr Consistent. I see things turning around at Devinci and it’s exciting to watch great job @cyclesdevinci
  • 19 2
With an aluminum frame-only option!!!!!!! YESSSS!!!! Good job Devinci.
  • 19 6
that is as expensive as yesteryear carbon frames...meh.
  • 2 1
@opignonlibre: Classic game of yay, ohhh
  • 4 1
and that one IS made in Canada.
  • 5 0
@opignonlibre: pretty crazy how people are now finding this kind of prices normal
  • 7 0
Aluminum... for $2,200?! That’s what I paid for a new CC Nomad frame 3 years ago. About two years before that I paid $750 for a new Devinci Dexter frame.

Frame only prices are insanity these days.
  • 3 0
@ninjatarian: I imagine the MTB industry conferences echo the cable industry.... shut down A La Carte and force bundling packages, increasing frame and part prices to force complete bike sales
  • 10 1
The bike industry has worked its voodoo. Here I am, scrolling down to look at the pricing and going "oh man, top end Aluminum bike for only $4800 CAD. I must be dreaming! Awesome!" Sits back and sips coffee... "oh wait, it's only a GX build..." Well played bike companies, well played!
  • 4 0
I feel the same... Way over priced especially for us canadians! Every year prices increase 1000$ and nobody bats an eye
  • 3 0
@LOLWTF: Can't bat them when they are pinned wide open in WTF mode.
  • 2 0
 @mykel: lmfao
  • 1 0
Honestly those prices wouldnt be so bad if these were 28lb builds with lifetime warranties, but when these high-end builds are coming in at 30-31lbs, Im happy about my $3000 USA made alloy bike (with lifetime warranty) weighing in similarly.
  • 13 6
So boost 148 is dead? It seems like the industry as a whole is rolling 157 out very slowly instead of ripping the bandaid. People are going to complain either way so just rip it off and move on.

But I would not buy a 148 bike right now...
  • 6 6
44mm offset seems to have died already also.
  • 26 2
@MikeAzBS: picked up my re-laced 142 wheel on hope hubs last night from the shop and gotta say it made me stiffer than extra sooper boost 169
  • 2 0
@MikeAzBS: other than the fact that it's on 95% of new 29ers this year.
  • 2 0
@MikeAzBS: Not sure where you are seeing that, but the majority of 29ers out in the last 12 months are running reduced offsets.
  • 2 0
"But I would not buy a 148 bike right now..." Why not? If it's a good bike, it's a good bike. Who really cares what the rear spacing is?
  • 3 3
It's a joke, not a dick. Dont take it so hard.
  • 7 2
For anyone curious about their pricing, this is how it stacks up, in CAD...

X01 Builds:
Devinci: $10,700 with carbon wheels
Santa Cruz: $10,600 with reserve wheels but no kashima Frown
Yeti: $11,000 with carbon wheels
Norco: $8,500 no carbon wheels
Trek: $9,700 with carbon wheels
Rocky Mountain: $8,000-$9,500
Specialized: $9,500 with carbon wheels
Transition: $7,800 (not sure if the Stans wheels are carbon or not... cheap either way)
YT Top End Builds: $7,000 with carbon wheels and XTR

I have never ridden a Devinci so I can't comment on the ride quality or ownership experience. However, I am skeptical that they can hang with the likes of Santa Cruz and Yeti. For that kind of $ you should expect lifetime warranties, unreal customer service, top notch build quality, etc, etc.

I'd like to ride one to see what's what.
  • 16 1
You get lifetime warranty on devinci frames. They ride amazing. They aren't a low end brand.
  • 2 4
They're top quality, on par with everyone else and they do have a lifetime warranty, and they're customer service is decent. However, these prices are unjustified and so is thaylt stupid superboost. As a devinci owner who was waiting for this to buy one, I just changed my mind. I'll order a pole for the same price and to try something different.
  • 11 2
The feel of the rear end on a Devinci is second to none. Consistent, progressive and bottomless. Now that their sizing has moved into the modern era, I'd consider one again.
  • 6 0
I had a 2017 Troy (orange/red one) Amazing bike, super stiff, bearing lasted well here in PNW. I have zero complaints about the bike. I never had an issue as for the lifetime. That said a buddy of mine has a Devinci DH bike and has some issue with the rear triangle. They sent him a whole new rear triange, bearings, and hardware no questions asked.
  • 1 2
@spaceofades: sanata cruz and spec also offer lifetime warranties on frames. Hell with yt you save almost 4k! you could go buy an extra devinici frame as backup with all that cash lol
  • 4 0
@nismo325: biggest mistake you could make is buying a yt in Canada. Worst customer service ever, just buy a normal brand.
  • 10 1
 Finally, my next bike
  • 24 18
Beautiful bike!! but the pricing is a joke compared to YT, Canyon, Commencal ...
  • 33 18
Devinci is no joke, I wouldn't mind paying more for a Devinci over a YT, Canyon, Commencal ...
  • 13 1
Actually european pricing is a joke
  • 2 1
@crashtor: and no doubt even worse in the UK!
  • 3 0
@crashtor: yeah 1000 EUR more based on the current exchange than the CDN price. Definitely Canadian friendly pricing. Whic i am glad for as I am think about Devinci in the spring.
  • 2 1
@Doogie711: maybe it's because in the EU they are backing they warranty with a good after sales services but not in Canada.
  • 9 2
Devinci has a lifetime warranty on their frames and isn't dealing consumer direct
  • 3 0
@Doogie711: yeah 4000$ for a frame is really good value champ
  • 4 3
@Alain2: but they're not even better, the three brands you named all offer better products and pricing than devinci
  • 1 2
And depending on your model of choice with YT and Commencal you might even get a replacement frame every few months while warranty lasts...
  • 3 1
@tgr9: If they are better why no lifetime on the frames?
  • 2 3
@TheOriginalTwoTone: lifetime warranty is only valid if you're the first owner and it doesn't even cover everything...
  • 4 0
@tgr9: First off original owner is common, not sure you have any point there.
Please tell me what's not covered? If you're going to come back with bearings- well they're a wear item.
So what you have left is manufacturers you say make a better bike but don't have enough confidence in it to warranty it for life and a company you say makes a subpar bike compared to the other yet somehow have enough confidence to warranty for life.

Hmm well thought out.
  • 3 0
@tgr9: being a devinci dealer I can tell you that they are more than happy to cover just about any type of damage to the frame. A dent that doesn't make the bike unsafe to ride doesn't warrant a new frame, but your chainstays or headtube snapping in half does. Rarely do we ever need to warranty anything from them. Also you can't complain about retail price and then argue you don't get the warranty 2nd hand, if you are buying 2nd hand you should not be paying retail.
  • 1 0
 @transitions-are-neat:

And even if you damage your frame they'll most often replace parts for cheap. I got a replacement chainstay for 150$ like 3 years ago after I crashed it. Much better than buying a new bike.
  • 6 1
€3,499.00 EUR - I'm glad Devinci stands behind mtb community with reasonable and justifiable prices.
  • 7 2
Geo looks awesome, threaded BB, bottle cage mounts yet PB’rs will still find something to bitch about. Gotta love it.
  • 4 0
I have a bitch. Whats with that pathetic carbon bash guard. Everyone I know that has dinged a down tube dinged it in the middle somewhere not at the bottom.
On my old bike I had a carbon Rockguardz thingy and I cracked that at the top. That was twice as long as the guard on this rig. Now (because RG dont make one for my frame) I use a chopped up old tyre which is an insult to my freaking expensive bike. Otherwise yes, this bike is ok Smile
  • 2 7
flag LOLWTF (Sep 28, 2018 at 9:51) (Below Threshold)
Crazy price, stupid builds, superboost, 51mm offset, 35mm rims(wtf), useless frame guard, not Dave Weagle designed like their Django... Want me to keep going?
  • 2 0
@LOLWTF: 35mm internal rims are rad, Tbis frame does have Weagles Split pivot, sooooo not sure what’s up, I’ll agree w ya on the naf Frame Guard tho and crazy price.
  • 1 0
@aushred: they took the split pivot but he didnt have any direct input in the bike construction
  • 1 0
 @LOLWTF: pretty common?
  • 5 0
 2015 Spartan Carbon Frameset - 2799$ CAD
2018 Spartan Carbon Frameset - 3999.00$ CAD
  • 4 0
 2020 Spartan Carbon Frameset - 4999 CAD ??
  • 2 0
2015 Carbon Spartan had aluminum chainstays, 2018 is full carbon and a chunk lighter.
  • 2 0
CAD went quite a bit south around 2015 if i remember correctly
  • 1 0
Don’t be fooled by Devinci (carbon) frame lifetime warranty. I bought a Troy carbon to discover the lifetime warranty ends the day you make a claim. And no crash!!! Maybe they just don’t care anymore about the locals for market share strategy.
  • 1 0
Never heard of warranty ending after you claim...and yes there are crash replacements, no sure who gave you that info, but its wrong
  • 1 0
@Spillner: what I meant is that I did not crash. Devinci said the failure of the frame was due to crash so they would not honor the warranty. I bought a replacement part for 600$
  • 1 0
Frame has good geometry and from what I've heard and read their suspension is good and pedals well but wow, what a bewildering parts spec.

Guide RSC brakes on the 9k usd carbon bike, 35mm or 36mm inner width wheels is a bit much also, EXO rear, 51mm offset fork? Probably has 175mm cranks too! Do product managers not shred?
  • 3 0
I think I’ll stick to the 27.5 for my height and rider ability. If I buy a spartan it won’t be for racing so nimble is better.
  • 2 0
Personally I like my 2009 Devinci frantik 2 better, I rented a spartan and it felt so dead when I was jumping or hopping it. I suppose the 29 wheels wouldn’t help either. I would still kill for a 27.5 Wilson though
  • 1 0
Am I the only person that came here for pics of the offset shock positioning that Weagle designed into Devinci's? It's the one thing I like to nerd out at and stare at on new Devincis.
  • 1 3
 Weagle didn't design that one...
  • 2 1
@LOLWTF: says split pivot on it, so yeah he kind of did
  • 2 0
@nummbr7: they bought the split pivot patent from him but he didnt have any input in the construction of the bike, like he did with the Django
  • 1 0
@LOLWTF: so yeah then he kind of did.....
  • 1 0
 Sure whatever
  • 1 0
I tried to buy a Django twice. Neither time were they in stock and they never returned my dealers calls or emails. Guess they didn't want my business. I ended up with an Intense that was better equipped and a lower price.
  • 1 1
Oh no Devinci! Looks great on paper, but then I got a looksy at one...?? Also the Colors and "graphics" are a total fail. Shorter rider needs a med size frame, but it comes with a 125 dropper? Shorter legs benefit (imo) even more from a 150-170 dropper.
  • 1 0
Someone needs to tell me what @Pinkbike´s problem with Evil bikes is....
www.vitalmtb.com/news/press-release/Evil-Launches-the-Offering,2324

Biggest news in ages....
  • 7 4
Here we are with that stupid “Super Boost..” rediculous.
  • 1 0
So is my 2014 Knolly Podium "super boost"?Its 157mm
  • 1 0
@nug12182: no, its dh boost. Super boost has different flange spacing.
  • 3 0
great now maybe i can start seeing deals on used 27.5 Spartan framesets.
  • 3 0
Split pivot : "...podium-crushing pedal stroke efficiency."
What?
  • 1 1
Prices seems pretty high, however I always see these bikes at deep discount intense style. I wouldn't bother buying a bike right now as we are heading into recession and prices will come down in the next year or so.
  • 4 1
 #boutF,ntime!!!
  • 3 1
 “Enhanced wheel size“ LOL
  • 2 0
I want it. Actually I want every new bike ????????????
  • 1 0
Another niche brand bike with super boost. Yet its still absent on bigger brands like Trek and Specialized. Interesting...
  • 1 1
is it really necessary to mention plastic rock guards anymore on a "new feature spec list"? Like its a special feature not already on every dam carbon mountain bike.
  • 2 0
Consider they don't have one on the Django, I'd say it's worth mentionning.
  • 1 0
 Why asymmetrical chainstay?
  • 9 0
 'cos single sided chain.
  • 6 6
Not a big fan of the aluminium frame. The inferior tube looks too twisted . It remind me a lot the trek remedy 29 from 2014.
  • 2 1
and now Oton has been riding the 29er Troy at EWS in Ainsa and Finale
  • 4 3
A mtb called spartan should have zero travel.
  • 2 1
Forget Devinci, at those prices I would buy a Da Vinci!
  • 1 0
White and red Canada paint please.
  • 1 0
Sooooo nice. Looks fast Big Grin
  • 1 0
Seems like some short top tube numbers/cockpits...
  • 1 1
I wish they posted the weights of the frame and build.
  • 3 0
Yes because I found the 650b carbon spartans actually quite heavy compared to other similar Frames...
  • 1 0
They do! 31lbs for the gx, 29lbs for x01
