Downhill Taxco
2016

By: Nicolas Switalski
Adrien Loron following Bernard Kerr

This small picturesque town located southwest of Mexico city, once famous for its silver mining got shocked once again with the energy of a bunch of riders and a few thousand fans. For the third year in a row, the finale of the 2016 City Downhill World Tour placed Taxco in the eyes of all downhill and freeride fans gathering more than 35,000 attendees. Just as every other year, this year's Down Taxco was as unique as every other one, starting with a fresh track that steered the riders through alleys that were completely different from past years, some massive jumps never before seen here and a lot of new faces more commonly found in the freeride scene made this event a refresh from an already amazing one.

This sport is as exciting as it gets because for one, nothing is written and even the 'usual suspects' that take wins in these races are not exempt of certain 'twists of fate,' as was the case with Bernardo Cruz who slipped no more than one hundred meters from the finish line leaving Fischbach to claim his victory in Mexico and as the overall City Downhill champion.

The best trick contest is always a favourite for the crowd, gathering literally tens of thousands of fans to watch some of the best freeriders in the world throw their best tricks. This year's best trick course was made up by the three last huge jumps, which were scored in a row, and the judging was taken care of by none other than the same guys who built this massive track; Olly Wilkins, Christian Fairclough, and Duncan Ferris. Sadly one of the favourites to take the win of this Best Trick, Antoine Bizet, coming straight from an impressive 2nd place at the Red Bull Rampage, suffered a foot injury on one of the jumps leaving him out. No less exciting were the tricks that landed the podiums of Sam Pilgrim 1st, Nicholi Rogatkin 2nd, and Reed Boggs 3rd.

Kind of underplaying the harsh landing that Remy had...a broken back is nothing trivial. Healing vibes Mr. Metailler!
  • + 8
 yup. Broke his back.
  • + 1
just saw the video of the crash! so rough! wishing him the best for sure
  • + 3
lil tip...a back protection is not the badest thing to wear!!!
  • + 2
@Parkbuilder72: I'm on board with protection, but I don't think back protection would have helped in this case. If you watch the video you can see his butt slammed down hard on the rear wheel. Then he rolled to his side and hit his hip on the ground before landing on his hands and knees. His back never hit the ground.

 Healing vibes!

@tmcp1127: he was wearing back protection.

 @tmcp1127: I don't watch...but in this case helps a protection Short !

@tmcp1127: compression break, your right a pad or brace wouldn't have done much.

my worst fear when im off roading in my jeep is dropping a ledge and blowing my back out when the frame/body slam down on the ledge. ive seen it happen twice.

Yup, sorry about that, Remy gave me the news he had broken his back after the article had been written! A day too late! Cheers!

Seriously - Cashroll and Cork 7 on a DH, then Cashroll on a 27.5 Enduro, and also a frontflip and flip tuck on a DH here? I'd say he's been the king of progressive tricks on big bikes in the recent years!
  • + 2
@bonerlog: But he doesnt wear a visor when riding slopestyle and he is too fun and laid back and just a general good guy in the sport, too much of a good guy to be any kind of king, also, could you tell im an idiot?
