Winning Video: Micayla Gatto & IFHT Films

IFHT Films (Matt Dennison & Jason Lucas) teamed up with Micayla Gatto to take on some of the bro culture within the bike industry. Their side-splitting take on Kendrick Lamar's 'Humble' (NSFW language) was a massive crowd favourite and took home top honours at this year's Dirt Diaries.

Holy shit Micayla(and IFHT) that was AMAZING

Hey bro, sit down Word, how RAD would it be to shred with that whole group of woman ! Undoubtably I'd be the slowest I'm sure.

I lost it when humble came on. Micayla you are fucking rad.
  • 59 3
Koravics riding is a thing of legends. Forbes was robbed.

 IFHT will never be beat.
  • 41 6
Well, thats the greatest thing I've ever seen.
  • 12 2
Yup, I'm going to go ahead and watch that again.
  • 37 8
The Micayla/IFHT was pretty cool and obviously they put a lot of effort into it but it had so little riding. The runner up had some awesome riding and humor; but my favorite was the ending shot of Zander Geddes video.
  • 12 0
yah I had to rewatch it to try and find the riding.... Claire's no-hander was way more 'ferdagirls' than this video!
  • 10 7
 exactly...super gimmicky.
  • 11 1
Pretty sure she is going for a different message then just riding.

the unintentional irony is strong with that winning vid
  • 9 12
 I totally agree..

 well said

 What was unintentionally ironic?

 @zede: Definitely MmmBones commentWink
  • 15 11
@zede: Title = Humble. Content = Complete negation of humility.
  • 22 4
@ahall: where is the unintentional part ?
  • 54 1
The video is about telling bros to sit down and be humble. Not about the women singing being humble. Also, its a joke.
  • 3 6
@zede: your question? did I disaccredit them?

@Patrick9-32: gee, I guess that would make it IRONIC wouldn't it?
  • 13 4

Telling someone to do something you are not doing is hypocritical but not ironic.
  • 5 4
@MmmBones: why do you say the irony is unintentional ? I don't get why it's so hard for you to answer
  • 46 6
at the premiere she stated the movie was about what it is like to be a female biker. While the whole video shows how rad women can be and how they aren't just something nice to look at as implied that bro thinks when bro zooms in on her bum, i felt the photo shoot fork scene detracted from that. It showed the aspect that women or pro women are often used to promote products (marzocchi or maxxis girls), but I feel that many people are just going to see that as a sexy scene of the film and it will take away from the films intent to show women as being equally rad bikers. Especially when paired with that there wasn't much showing Gattos or in general women's rad riding skills in comparison to riding in the other videos.
  • 3 3
@Patrick9-32: only if they pretend to have higher standards than is the case. Irony may not be intentional, it can be a twist of fate.
  • 2 0
 @t3rry: I felt the same.
  • 27 1
@t3rry: I think half the MTB community is too young to know or remember the Marzocchi girls. I thought she nailed the parody of that. I'm sure the joke will go above the heads of many, but funny none the less!
  • 2 3
@t3rry: The fork scene was dope (love those old Marzocchi ads!). I think it worked well with the Hip Hop video's art!
  • 10 0
@mtnrush666: but what did you take from it? The purpose is that women are expected to sell products with sex, but her lyrics clearly state she doesn't want to be doing that and would rather be out shredding. At the screening it was difficult to even make out the lyrics, so all of a sudden we cut from women being rad, to old school sleazy marzocchi bomber girl scene. Once I got home and relistened to the lyrics it made sense stating she doesn't want to be used to sell items based on sex sells.. but I still think the message of that particular scene is going to fly over a lot of people's heads.
  • 9 5
@t3rry: So you got the point, you understood how this scene was making sense but you still decided that it was unintentionally ironic ? So you basically think women are not allowed to make fun of the way bike industry used to treat them ? Niiice
  • 5 4
@zede. I think it's fine for her to do so. It's awesome that some of us can see the parody. In the end it's about reclaiming and taking the power out of something that was once hurtful to female riders. But there's a lot of people who won't get it and it will inadvertantly send the opposite message to the boneheads of the world. Go read the YouTube comments. There's a time and place for everything, and I just wonder whether this was the right choice in comparison to some other things she could have done to maximize showcasing women as equals in the biking world.
  • 3 0
@t3rry: Seemed pretty clear to me that it was a shot at the whole Marzocchi objectification era. Maybe for those that don't know it'll be a history lesson of sorts.
  • 5 1
@t3rry: so people should stop doing ironic/parodic videos? There will always be idiots who read "the onion" and see it as real news. Showing women skills was done hundred times, i mean, we see at every race how fast are the top women, Casey brown shows her awesome riding style in "not2bad"; so why wouldn't you a bit of change and watch a parody ? who cares about idiots that don't get second degree?
  • 2 3
Like I said place and time. If it were an NSMB drop awesome. Dropping at cworx where we couldn't even hear the lyrics left a poor first impression. In all reality neither of our opinions matter and all power to Gatto. If our conversation here has given some people some food for thought regarding women's portrayal in sport, then that's awesome. Thanks.
  • 38 18
I can't wrap my head around the decision. I thought this was a mountain bike video contest and it seems to me that Micayla and IFHTs film is not a mountain bike video.

My initial reaction was "it's a music video". It was entertaining, had a good message and the lyrics were smart but the video was more a remake rather than a remix of Kendricks 'humble' also there was hardly any riding in it. Again, it's a good youtube video not a mountain bike video.

Can someone please enlighten on the guidelines and criteria of the dirt diaries contest? I thought Micaylas film was good but not the winner.
  • 32 9
I totally agree with you. I loved what Micayla put together. It was fun, acting and production was spot on. I am also huge fan of IFHT films and I always look forward seeing their work.

However, the first rule of this contest says: "TEAMS MUST BE MAXIMUM 6 PEOPLE including other riders, film crew and
editors." To me, they broke the rules and should not be eligible to win. Unfortunately this seams to happen almost every year and feel bad for the teams who are trying stick to the rules. Their plan, story and filming could rapidly change if you had an option to add more riders, film makers, or editors in it.

If you race and brake the rules, you get disqualified. Same with any other photo or video contest you submit to- you are late with your submission or don't follow the rules - your work might be shown but I would not be eligible to win. It's simple as that. I really hope that the organizers either cancel the rules or stick by them in the future.

Props to all teams - this year entries were incredible!

It's like everything in the action sports world, if an attractive girl does it, then it doesn't even need to be related to the sport and internet goes craaaaaazzzzzzzyyyyyy.
  • 8 3
@Justa25: completely agree. Video was cool, but it was a spoof with no actual riding. @stevestorey got robbed IMO.
  • 13 2
@mickmart: I think Dylan Forbes got robbed. That video had everything!
  • 2 1
@Justa25: but yours was instructional and educational. I walked away learning more about the trailbuilders' habitat and how sensitive they are to nature Wink
  • 8 3
@Justa25: Every video except Micayla's broke the maximum time limit rule. So then every video should have been disqualified?
  • 9 2
I can't remember all the criteria, but the videos are judged based on quality of filming, originality, the underlying theme/message of the story, and technical details (music, editing, etc). The underlying theme plays a huge role in the judging, and a big contribution to Micayla's win is that she wrote a whole rap herself.
  • 5 2
@Justa25: Thank you for saying this.
  • 1 3
@pbfan08: in this case, because the message was directly on point, and denying the rampant sexism that occurs in the industry further validates that point.
  • 1 0
I'm 100% behind Micayla's video and have nothing negative to say about it, but I just watched the rest of these and Dylan Forbes' was really incredible. The riding, filming, production quality, plot etc. couldn't have been better, genuinely funny, AND if anything, the Three Amigos line made it the obvious winner (how has no one called this out or even questioned "son of a motherless goat" yet?)

..although Micayla's was rad and I'm not complaining.

Footage was rad, I just have a hard time with pop culture adaptations. The lyrics (mtb ZING!) are always clunky and forced. Sick riding though, those women can really giver.

Can we all agree that the SAFTB trend has become lame and uncreative not to mention that it's already pretty sexist. Yeah I get it, go shred with your buds, pound some beers and get rowdy. I don't think anyone is against that but it's not so cool if it's exclusionary. My wife is a bigger ass kicker than a lot of dudes i know but its BS to say that Saturdays aren't for her too. I just can't buy in if she can't too so props to IFHT for the vid.

Maybe it's time we redefine what Saturday's are for and I can't think of a better place to start than pinkbike. I know there are some clever folks on here, anyone care to take a shot at a new and improved SAFT(xx)???

And before you fire off an angry response consider that you're defending tools like these guys:
im not sure you could be more uncreative or uninteresting. And saying "send it" for a beer? GTFOOH! We're better than that #makeSENDITgreatagain
