Photo Report: Dirt Surfing in Practice at EWS Chile

We have been waiting for this one. Not very patiently, we might add. Round one of the 2018 Enduro World Series has taken us to some of the wildest trails we might see this year with the notorious Chilean anti-grip dirt of the high Andes mountains. With six stages that total 5,300 meters in vertical drop over a total of 34 kilometers, this one is going to be absolutely brutal. Racers were allowed one practice run per stage and, given the nature of the terrain, they will be riding nearly blind. The deep, fluffy dirt here in Lo Barnechea hides razor-sharp rocks that frequently shift so the tracks will be constantly evolving. This isn't going to be a race of blistering speed. It's going to come down to who can best avoid danger and keep their bike together in the ever-shifting dirt here in the Andes. There will be plenty of drifting and plenty of destroyed wheels. Enjoy this practice gallery before the action gets underway tomorrow.

So if Ruaridh Cunningham is injured again...what was he doing in full kit at the bike checks?
Dude never catches a break with the injuries.
If I can remember he didn’t participate in one DH race last season and the first EWS of the year on a new team it catches him again.

Worried for what seems to be the lack of body protection on riders for this kind of terrain... (Shins, elbows, chest...)
Yes you don´t look so cool on the pictures, but at least race day I hope riders take some considerations...

So you wish them heat stroke and dehydration? You should be ashamed of yourself.
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: I wouldn´t say it´s hot at 3.800m over the sea. Look at Ravanel wearing jacket... Plus here most of the way to top is assisted.
  • 2 5
@PauRexs: ok you win, they should be ashamed of themselves and on their hands they have the blood of children they inspire not to wear protection. After all wearing additional 1-1,5kg of movement restricting gear for a whole day at high altitude is nothing when it comes to fighting for a World tittle. They know nothing. I can judge them from the lows of my mediocrity while they are at 3800 m over the sea level

@WAKIdesigns: Well is not a batle waki, I understant your point. Just saying I am worried, some one allready died in this series, and I know well the dangers of this sport cause I´ve been racing at the top level as pro too. When you are pro and in shape, you are overconfident, this is good for one side... also you want to bright at all levels... and image plays a big roll today... appear like the hunchback of notradamus it doesn´t help... But if I would be the organization I would make at least chest protection mandatory for some events... if you clip a pedal on the floor while trying to pedal everywhere you can, the most probable is you will go over the bars in a way you will launch on your chest... and if it´s sharp rocky... damn. I just want the best for everyone, I hope some days we´ll have functional and astheathichal protections... and well... this is my job actually... anyway Thanks for your feedback from your all viewing side of this gravity riders over mind... peace Wink

I just mean that this is a dangerous sport and you can’t save people from themselves. They are adults who are capable of taking their own decisions and are more aware of the risks involved than we can ever be. Chest protectors aren’t mandatory even in Downhill. Death and injury are a part of life, I am in no position to tell these guys and girls what to do. And those looking up to them their own responsibility to take their decisions. It sucks to see broken and dead riders but again, that is the part of the game. It’s way safer than road racing where nobody wears anything

How many ews dreams will be shattered by broken derailleurs this year? SRAM & Shimano don't want you to know!

If they kept track of mechanical failures throughout the year I'm guessing flats, broken derailleurs & chains would be top 3.
