Disabled Rider Calls for Empathy and Kindness After Being Challenged on Trails

Sep 14, 2020
by James Smurthwaite

A disabled rider who was challenged for riding his electric wheelchair on trails in Indiana has called for kindness and empathy after a clip of the incident went viral.

Tom Morris was riding in Brown County State Park when he was stopped and challenged by two able-bodied riders who told him he was breaking the rules of the park. In fact, he was not breaking any rules as his adaptive equipment is allowed on any trail in Indiana. The clip has since picked up more than 200,000 views on Facebook and has been shared widely on other social media platforms and other news outlets too.

While a lot of the response to the video has been angry, Tom has asked people to use it as a moment to reflect and approach each other with more consideration.

bigquotesI posted that video for one very simple reason and that was to bring awareness. That night that the video was taken, I waited until the next morning not knowing if I was going to post it. When I woke up the next morning I opened up some social media and the very first person that was on my feed was a young boy, Eli, an 8-year-old boy with spinal bifida who is wheelchair bound. All I could think was what if this were to happen to him or someone like him? He doesn’t have a voice or a platform like I do.

The only reason I posted that video is because I want to advocate for people that maybe don’t have the ability to advocate for themselves. That video was never meant with intentions to do harm or ill will to those two people. I don’t know them, I know them from one interaction, and I have nothing but love and kindness for them. This is not a revenge thing, this isn’t anything like that.

People have reached out with a lot of support and I appreciate that but on the other hand what that man and woman’s comments to me were, they weren’t very nice but some of the stuff that’s written in those messages is challenging and that’s not who I am and that’s not the message. The message is kindness. As we move forwards I would just really appreciate if we could look at each other with a little more empathy and try and get out there and make this place a little bit better.
Tom Morris

Tom has apparently been contacted by Terry Coleman, the deputy director of the Department of Natural Resources in Indiana, and was told that the state has purchased a fleet of off-road wheelchairs for its citizens to use. He encourages anyone with a disability and without access to their own wheelchair to use them and explore the state parks and trails of Indiana.

Note on doxxing

While we unequivocally condemn the actions in the two individuals in the video we will not tolerate any attempts to identify them in the comments. We will be moderating the comments and any threats of harm, attempts to locate the couple or identifying details will result in a suspension.

It's sad that our community has people like this. When I started mountain biking the first thing I noticed was how encouraging and welcoming everyone is. A new rider on a blue trail for the first time? People are so nice and willing to always give other tips. Need a tow in? I'm sure anyone on here would be more than happy. This is despicable and I don't want those two associated with the great mtb community that we have.

@alexbg: Anybody sitting on a bike is part of the mountain bike community as far as outsiders are concerned. That's why is so important to stay cool no matter how many d-bag hikers or whatever else you run into. Everybody's individual actions, including this dickhead's, always end up reflecting on all of us.

@heffernw: from what I understand, it was the Kingdom Trail Association themselves who did in that trail system, and not an unsavory rider. Pretty great detail on that over on the MTBR forms.

Hopefully this person learns from this mistake. It would be great if both of these guys start riding together. There is a way for this story to have a better ending - just takes some empathy, redemption, growth and maybe friendship.
  • 12 1
@privateer-wheels: The even that kicked everything off though was a mountain biker yelling at a landowner who was riding their horse on the trails, which are all multi-use, even though they were built with mountain biking in mind. Interestingly enough, the trails are still open to all usages other than mountain biking.
  • 21 16
Same types whom think ebikes are so detrimental to trails. Why, bc the trails will be used more? With that logic you'd then say ok only so many riders per hour/day.
Or ebikes arw too fast...
Ok, so fast xc riders or fast af dh riders cant ride either then?

@alexbg: The reality is he's on a bike and wearing lycra, so despite would you and I hope/wish, he *will* be identified as "mountain biker d-hole". I'll give him the benefit of the doubt; he likely realized he was in the wrong but too invested in his position to admit it and just apologize. My kid does this too, but then he's 8 and still learning; not sure what this guy's excuse is, other than people seem to equate saying "sorry" with weakness.
  • 44 2
@ATXZJ: Right now this guy has no legitimate position; he's completely in the wrong but we can probably get him to come around and make some good out of these events, like the OP wants.

The minute we suggest a violent or punitive reaction - or worse, act on it we lose the moral imperative to demand change. The same way reformed criminals make powerful advocates because they've made huge mistakes, we can get this guy to make positive impacts because he's made his own mistakes.

If Tom (the OP) can ask for that after being the target of this terrible behaviour, we can honor his request as well.

@azawad: I like your message, but I submit that for a person like this to be even remotely worth being around, he's going to have to have a 180 in terms of even any shred of empathy... Unreal. I'm impressed how the Chairbiker handled him. I can't imagine the frustration and disgust.
  • 45 0
@LukeBurgie: I think about this every single time I come across a runner, hiker, or other non-mountain bike user at the trails. I always try to stop, say hello, give a big friendly smile, and even engage in conversation if they seem amenable. One of the best ways to take care of your local trails is to ensure all users feel welcome.
  • 8 0
@bonkmasterflex: It's true. I'm the same. That possessive localism is cancer. I surf too and i've experienced it plenty. Why would you want to go out and ride or surf and feel angry and defensive? So backwards.

@third-party: Access to some of the core trails was revoked by the landowners. There are different accounts as to what really happened. I'm guessing there is at least some truth to both accounts. Apparently there had been repeated run-ins between horseback riders--who happen to be the landowners--and bikers. And apparently KTA took issue with the landowners over post-holing from walking on the groomed fatbike trails.

Agree though if someone beats him down on the trail it doesn't help the MTB cause, plus he'll play the role of victim the second things don't go his way.

This guy felt like he was in the right to try and stop an eMTBer from enjoy the trails that his wife and him were able to enjoy. Easy fix to this problem, make eMTB legal in Fed and State parks. That way this guy and other trail users never have to make any comments about eMTB be illegal ever again.

See that is my point. That guy in the link has a bike that has so much cool stuff going on that I want a comprehensive review of what everything is and how it works. I don't mean the next statement to be ignorant but I see that the rider does not have use of both legs yet they is a shifter and gears. I would love to see more about the bike and rider to understand they whole picture of the bike build and how its. All bikes are their own form of art mixed with personalized functionality.  Working at a trail centre it's so important to get stoked on anyones achievements if that's just getting round a blue trail for the first time or sending a massive 40ft gap! Getting excited about eachothers achievements is what makes the sport as great as it is!

@bonkmasterflex: Completely agree. This is how we build social capital in the physical world(not the media world). Eye contact, smiles, hellos, have a great hike or wheel. Not just on the trail but in as many places as we interact. Such a great practice. Something we can develop and practice on the trail, at the grocery store, wherever. Sometimes people forget we are all in this together.....Can we get a story on his offroad chair PB? I want to know more about it.Very coolSmile

I watched this video several times, and I'm sorry, but something isn't right here (aside from the two a-holes). This entire thing seems a bit contrived. Is this video actually legit? Those 2 don't look a bit surprised to see Tom come around the corner. Are there people that actually bust a disabled persons chops like this, almost on cue? Tom Morris is a motivational speaker, and this is free advertising. Videos like this don't help, but further divide people. Look at the stupidity in the comments section for proof. Wouldn't be surprised to see this come out as a hoax down the road (like that's never happened before, right?).

@Monster-G: okay bro, it was just a joke. The OP said he'd tow someone in, which is typically down a trail, but Ebikers clearly have an advantage going up the trail, hence the tow up joke. It's not funny if you have to explain it.....

Ebikes and bikes for disabled people are completely separate things... Just because they both have a motor, doesn’t make them the same...

That’s like saying motorized wheelchairs are the same thing as electric cars, since both have four wheels and an electric motor...
  • 134 5
@Saidrick: I agree. But as an ebiker with 60% lung function, you cannot see my disability unless you put me on an Amish bike climbing a hill as I will be on the side of the trail sitting trying to catch my breath. My point is that many people with disabilities do not have obvious signs therefore you need to be cool with ebikers as long as they are cool. I finally taped a large copy of my disabled placard on my top tube because I was catching shit from idiot purists. I would explain to them that I had a disability and permission from the park rangers but a certain segment of the biking community is like this couple. I must say that most mountain bikers are genuinely curious and cool and probably the best part of the population.
  • 21 4
@Saidrick: I read his comment like how I see a few commentators on this site: Comment after reading headline, then read article.

The guy in the video automatically jumps into action seeing someone on an Ebike and condemns him. Once Tom informs him he's disabled I think the guy doubles down on his position out of embarrassment and just being an idiot. The female rider realizes it's wrong and tells the guy he should have just shut up.

Look back a year at some of the comments on Ebike articles on this website, they sound a lot like the angry guy in the video.

Preaching kindness, Disabled man does the opposite of being kind. Leaves original video full of shock and awe with couples faces up. Gets revenge over and over every time it's shared."

Is there any better feeling than rolling away knowing your right before someone can even try to calm down or apologize...and then posting your side online to confirm how right you are?

The satire (sadly reality) of my comment above was simply just that, some folks take things so passionately the they fail to look at the situation before jumping to attack. It correlates a lot with the general commentary we would see on eBike articles throughout the years here.

Something similar to this happened to a Bowhead user up here in New England. Except they posted pictures of his vehicle online asking who they were and accusing them of essentially what we saw above in this video.

 @onlyDH: You misinterpret.

It's his responsibility to behave in a manner he expects others to if he wants to affect change. You can't behave poorly (even if it's not "as bad" as the people coming at you) and expect others to behave better or respond with kindness. Not a single social construct we have that turns from negative to positive interaction ever came of a guy just riding away like he did.

He startled them. They'd never seen it. If he wanted them to "show kindness" just like his subsequent videos preach, then he would have been the kindness he wanted to see in them.
All he had to do was state what it was and why it was allowed. We're humans. Not omnipotent. Most of us don't know what's allowed by the ADA guidelines.

Turn, explain why you are able to use. Start a dialogue. All of this reeks of the failings of social media & video 'reactionism'.

There are tons of the greatest quotes in the world he could have applied:
1. Be the change you want to see in the world
2. When you pray for patience, you should expect there to be opportunities to SHOW patience. He had the opportunity, but drove off and posted online.

Only after the hatred, threats of violence and multiple places online that posted all their vital contact info came about did he post anything to his "followers". Posting a video to your followers doesn't do anything to cool things down or resolve things.

I just tried to look up the ADA compliance info myself for trails. It's a 140+ page document for the US Forest Service.

The whole "nasty" and "angry" thing I have a problem with too. The old dude was at most whiny. People over exaggerate his temperment so they can overreact to him. It was a trivial encounter at best.

Maybe Tom's intent was to encourage understanding, but you'd think that would involve insight in the original post advising of ADA compliance info, his authorization to ride there and how he could have better handled the encounter himself. Sure, maybe he's right...but somewhere in the middle is the answer.

I'm not comfortable with the persecutory responses of all this.

I feel like more than anything, this is a perfect example for everybody to take a step back from constantly judging everyone based on split second judgements and think through someone else’s point of view. What would he have accomplished if it was an able bodied person on an ebike? Is it really every trail users duty to police everyone else on the trails? Also doxxing the couple is just childish.  @jambarbeast: It was a combo of an ebike and a go cart at the same time. If it's your first time seeing it and you're not a fan of technology impeding on singletrack, you're assuming it's a jerk taking advantage of the trails and breaking laws. We've almost all met an ebiker breaking rules on trail.
I've even ran into scooters and twice now those OneWheel faux electric skateboards poaching trail.

It's within reason to assume we all know what a whirring battery is now and it's reasonable to assume it's one more rule breaker now that they are so brazen.

If we could rewind time, have Tom let them know that it's legal and he has clearance to use it, they have the opportunity to respond. All this tech is crazy new and if you're going to be the one using it, it would help to understand how trail users are seeing nothing but violations of etiquette. Maybe Tom doesn't realize how many violations of rule these 2 riders have seen over the last few years and how the conflicts have escalated as the technolgy ramps up.

I commute by eBike (or at least used to commute when that was a thing) and I've had one chap get in my face about it. Now I am able bodied, so I don't necessarily have the moral high ground of an adaptive user, but so what? Who made that guy trail police (or in my case bike path police). Did I interfere with his ability to get around in any way? Was I riding like a dick? Was I bothering him in any way whatsoever? Nope, the guys just decided to get in my face because in his head I was performing some great injustice and it was his job to correct it.

The fact that he was legally wrong (class I ebikes are treated as pedal bikes on bike paths here) is besides the point. What ever happened to mind your own damned business?

Right or wrong, when you confront a stranger over something like this you open yourself up for all kind of issues. On the other hand, posting a video of these people is a pussy move too. It should have been something he discussed with his friends over beers and it woulda ended right there.
  • 11 0
@drunknride: I don't have a problem with it in this specific instance because:

- Most people may not actually know about adaptive wheelchairs on trails and having this posted on a website as widely read as Pinkbike is a good thing.
- People will think twice about being a*sholes if they know there may be consequences. The a*shole level in this video is high enough where a little public shaming is probably healthy. Just don't doxx the guy or go to his employer, this is sufficient.

blowmyfuse pretty much nailed it. If the e-chairist wanted to be a voice for the 8 yr old with spinabifida or anyone else without a platform and voice, why did he not put that in the first video? The initial video would have been the best place to include a part that assisted vehicles or whatever are allowed by the forest service with a screen shot from the FS regs not just Tom yelling that they are. No mention of empathy or doing good in the video just, hey look at this dick I caught on video.

When I saw this video a few days ago I didn't put together that it was posted to be the voice of disabled riders. And I still really doubt that was why he posted it but after it blew up he decided he had better say something.

@roma258: I'll be honest, I didn't know electric wheelchairs were allowed on trails. It makes complete sense though. I guess I thought that bike means "human powered" and therefore I'd expect someone to ride a hand bike on trail meant for bikes, but obvious this is flawed, because it assumes that every disable person can turn a hand crank.

@blowmyfuse: How dumb exactly are you? You think anyone would voluntarily ride a 3-wheel motorized bike w their feet strapped into stirrups unless they physically had to?!!! The ass-hat in this vid had to know immediately that it was a disability-necessary vehicle. Maybe you guys can move in together and be awesome together...

@PHeller: Are you aware that Tom the disabled man in question makes a living through his fitness business and one of the key components of it is his capacity as a disabled triathlete?

It's neither here nor there, but to me it's more surprising that someone who makes their living in that manner and is super fit when it comes to pedaling a handicap bike with his arms didn't go e-bike first. But probably had more to do with one not existing that he had access to.

@DirtbagMatt: So you expect a guy to turn around, see handlebars, motor and guy in a seated position and expect him to diagnose that his legs are non-functional?

May I ask you what a guy in a go-carts legs are doing when he rolls up?

Again, not excusing anyone's behavior, but you have hindsight in this instance and the guy in the video reacting didn't. He sees a guy in a go-cart.

Or did he just feel "entitled" to go on it and get in the way of able bodied people and cause my potential harm to himself and then #speakout about his 'experience' on social media like a typical feminist who hates herself and her life...

@blowmyfuse: Even if that were a fair explanation (which I don't think it is because as others have pointed out easily the most likely explanation for his 'go cart' is as a mobility vehicle), he specifically said twice to the guy that it's a 'handicap piece of equipment'. Given that the guy's response was an aggressive 'And?' followed by an assertion that he still shouldn't be there I'm not sure he was open to a calm explanation of why Tom was allowed to ride it there.

As to your point about people not knowing complex park access laws, that's fair enough but why would they then feel empowered to enforce them without understanding them? I don't understand the jaywalking laws in the US but if I wandered around calling people out for walking across streets would you defined my actions as noble nonetheless?

@mexicant: 100% with you on that ! My mum has some severe health problems and is about to get her 3 joint replacement, yet from outside she looks normal and you may not get why she is allowed to skip queues, ride a tricycle or an ebike. Don't judge a book by its cover it doesn't even tell half of the story and if people need to skip, use a motor or else, many times it is because they don't have the choice. Let's feel lucky that many of use can ride many times a week, enjoy our passion and be fit so we don't need a motor.

@Sugarbrad: The reason I maintain that there are two sides to this topic are for the reason you point out. I'm stubborn. I've also (and sounds like you have too) seen the absolutely horrible things done to enact vengeance on this guy.

Everyone is using their magic power of hindsight to act like they would IMMEDIATELY identify a handicap 3 wheeler. That is utter fairy tale. They're being pious and self righteous.

And I still assert that 2 wrongs don't make a right. Tom posting in subsequent posts about how kind he is are horseshit so long as he leaves his original video up to share and repost and spread hate.

I'm all for forgiveness. Not sure why you are able to forgive me for things that I say to upset you. Eventually I explain to you why I've said or done something to give you perspective. You and I work around it and move on.

But Tom is spreading that video all day every day in the same manner that started the hostility toward the guy and the old dude obviously is NOT on EQUAL SOCIAL MEDIA FOOTING as Tom. He can't possibly ever gain enough VISUAL AND SOCIAL FORGIVENESS online or in person to get back any form of dignity.

He's always going to get crap this one blip on the radar. If he apologized right now, you know Tom wouldn't jump back in his original post and edit it to have the guys apology on the end.

It reeks of vengeance and passive aggressive hostilities

@cuban-b: Really. Cause if it was an apology he wanted, he may have gotten it on the spot if he'd explained the law that allowed him clearance in the eyes of a person who didn't know the law. He had the chance & the choice to pursue forgiveness on the trail that day.

Tom didn't choose forgiveness in the moment, and was justifiably upset & had time to cool off. His choice of action was to post a damning video that vindicated himself, got revenge on his adversary and if he wanted an apology, he's not stated he'd take one since.

I'm sure he thinks in his own head he is has some noble concept that the video circulating is somehow enlightening people, but at what cost to the offender? Far...far greater price than any of us could imagine I would guess. It's bordering on cruelty at this point.

But the damage is done and others have copied it and it will live on. It's already been spliced countless times into YouTube rant videos, TikTok (my kids showed it to me when it hit 3 MILLION views)

@scott-townes: yeah - but after taking a breath - this guy - the offender needs have a chance to apologize.

We live in such a divided state these days we need to respect others who actually do back down from the wrong idea.

We've confused consistency with honor - its a classic behavioral psych problem and in sales its used this all the time to get agreements.

One of the coolest social trends in MTB at this moment is to hate ebikes and anybody on one.

All the offender did was toe the line blindly after making a knee jerk reaction. Then he stayed consistent - because thats what self respecting people do. Its also a way to make quick decisions - stay consistent.

That said, i don't have the answers, i just see the same patterns repeating in every social movement and hope we can figure out how to have rational dialogue with the goal of understanding and compromise.

Ill keep dreaming...

That's been my take. We've all said crap and not known the circumstance. If he'd let them know that he had prior authorization and it was an ADA compliant vehicle (which he never addressed in the video or his words attached to the post) it would go a long way toward de-escalating the issue.

Sure, they were surprised and initially pissed, but he just go-carted off into the distance without helping them understand what they just saw. If you're going to preach kindness, you have to be willing to show it yourself.

Takes 5 seconds to say "Shocking vehicle I know. But I cleared it with the rangers as ADA compliant." Nobody riding that gocart could possibly think everybody will see them coming and go "Oh...obviously that go cart is being driven by a disabled individual executing his rights to operate what appears to be a fully ADA compliant device."

If they’re brazen enough to ride a real dirt bike in to MTB trails, I’ll assume the worst about them. You know the best way to get hurt or shot or stabbed? It’s to go around telling strangers what they should or shouldn’t be doing in public.

I’ll call the park rangers and law enforcement. Because it’s not my f*cking job, nor do I have any authority to tell them to do anything. If you wanna play cop, then you should be a damn cop.
  • 4 6
@Almazing: you guys have such a weird culture down there. If I saw someone doing that I wouldn't hesitate to ask them if they knew they were using non motorized trails, and if they said yes simply mentioning that it's not appreciated. Getting shot or stabbed wouldn't really cross my mind.

Big difference between that and actually confronting someone which is maybe what you're talking about?
  • 3 0
@friendlyfoe: Yea America is a weird place. Just a week ago, there was a shooting at the trailhead on of the more popular trails in my city. I would inform someone if they came up to me and asked. But I’d never be snarky about it, nor confront them. Obviously this only goes as far as trail usage. If it’s the personal safety of another, like say, attempted bad stuff(like really bad), I can’t not do anything about it.

@Almazing: Funny, that’s what the director of EMBA told me when I asked what was supposed to be done about all the illegal e-MTB riding happening on local trails. She said that the community needs to enforce because no one has the budget. I’m paraphrasing, but that’s the gist. And now, unfortunately, lack of enforcement and trail user complicity have led to mass rule-breaking where I see an e-MTB riding illegally on every ride now.
So what then? Every ride costs $5 to pay for rule enforcement? Seems like a plausible future, all because people can’t manage to follow the rules and respect the work of others.
I don’t want to be a hall monitor. I just wish everyone could be respectful enough to actually follow the rules so we can all enjoy what we’ve built without risking access or grant funding. Unfortunately not the case, currently.
  • 3 3
@erikkellison: Under who’s authority is anyone going to enforce anything? Does IMBA have the power to deputize trail users? No. And charging people to pay to ride an e-bike on public land as punishment? Yea, I’m no lawyer but there’s probably legal issues with that. So I guess you’re left with ridiculing and being a*sholes to those who ride e-bikes as punishment right? That’s what she meant by enforcing? Cuz I can guarandamntee you that if anyone tries stops me from riding an e-bike(I don’t ride one) on public trails, I’ll tell them to f*ck right off and call the cops and rangers on me. IMBA can’t enforce a damn thing. At all. That’s not how this works. The better thing to do is to accept that e-bikes don’t damage to trails and they’re not excessively fast as people believe they are. The MTB community claims to be all-inclusive but the mere mention of e-bikes and everyone loses their f*cking mind. Accept change.
  • 3 0
@Almazing: dude, you need to dial yourself back a bit.
I said EMBA, not IMBA. EMBA is our local trail association who is responsible for trail building and maintenance. They are the point organization for interfacing with other user groups and the government. They are the ones advocating for community enforcement. No one said ridicule. The best thing to do would be to kindly inform of the rule breaking, and offer suggestions for other trails that do allow e-bikes. The fact stands that it is currently against rules to ride e-MTB on many popular local trails. This isn’t a value judgment. It just is currently not allowed.
If you feel so strongly about allowing e-MTB on trails where they’re not currently allowed, the “better” thing to do would be to lobby for changing of rules and regulations regarding trail use.
To be clear, I was suggesting that legal trail users could, in the future, pay a fee to ride, part of which would go to enforcing that illegal users stay away. I’m not a legal expert, but I imagine that someone has legal latitude to enforce appropriate trail use. But as above, far better to inform than punish. Your suggestion that we just let people break the rules because no one can enforce the current rules is absolute rubbish. Think about what you’re saying. Really think. You don’t even need to respond. The ramifications are far-reaching and scary.
Why are you so irritated? I think some self-reflection and pause might help you better participate in the conversation.
  • 5 1
@erikkellison: You're right. I apologize. My biggest issue with local trail organizations(and individual riders) is that they take it upon themselves to prevent e-bike access even though the federal or state government allow them on federal or state land. If the local, state, and/or federal law prohibits e-bikes on certain trails, then I don't wanna get caught breaking the law. Fines are steep. But if the law allows, but some elitist prick group of mountain bikers take it upon themselves to put 'No Pedal Assist Bike' signs on the trailhead without federal or state backing, they can go stuff it.

These local organizations like to think e-bikes are a gray area and like to lump them with actual dirt bikes, but there's a 3 class e-bike system that 25 states have already adopted. Class 1s are what we're most familiar with. I don't even ride e-bikes. But I'm informing myself with knowledge and regulations for them. I might get an e-bike one day when they stop looking fat and ugly. Because like it or not, eventually they're going to be a normal sight on trails all over the country.
  • 4 7
@Almazing: You sound like every other "e-biker" with F*** off mentality. Shout anybody down who cares about the woods themselves, the ecology, the biodiversity, water quality, quiet and natural state of forests, the ability to get out and enjoy the solitude of nature.

Technology is evolving exponentially and just because a non-motorized bike currently has permission to be on a strip of dirt in the woods doesn't entitle everyone to strap on a battery and hit it too. Our forests, rivers, wildlife and open spaces need to be protected far more than your right to shralp a battery bike in the future.

I am perfectly fine with municipalities and each individual trail system accessing natural places making their own individual decisions about what access they grant
.
I am fine with humans holding each other accountable on the trail because government is for providing basic protections (like establishing wild & scenic places we can't ruin). We hold one another accountable daily and using a cop out to refuse to be a decent and respectful law abiding citizen just because someone with a badge isn't in your face babysitting you is a horrible way to conduct yourself.

When you're at a family gathering and Aunt Bessie's little turd kid is trying to climb the curtains or punch the dog when she's not around, the rest of the family can keep that punk in line.

Society turning a blind eye on each other on important matters weakens us. Sure, too many Karens running around these days, but if people would show the respect their parents taught them to show, they wouldn't be out poaching trails on e-bikes making up lame excuses about who has a right to keep them in check...when it's just YOU that can't keep yourself in check.

Public land is public land and is for everyone to enjoy. When the law decides certain equipment can be used on that land, that's how it is. Stop being f*cking selfish with your, 'I want the public, taxpayer woods to myself and f*ck everyone else' mentality. This elitist mindset is why e-bike advocates have had enough of you and people like you's bullshit and are being more vocal.

Don't preach to me about conservation and preserving the environment when you're just as guilty as I and everyone else for buying bike components and frames. You think that stuff doesn't have wasteful and toxic byproducts harming the environment? Think again.

LOL! I love the instant cognitive dissonance sets in with Ken and Karen. You can see their perception of the whole world collapse around them. They're no longer the trail crusaders and heroes.

It comes first when the guy tells him it's a handicap piece of equipment and then asks, "who the are you?" Uh-oh. Ken realizes he made a mistake and is, in fact, no one with any authority. Then Karen doubles down with, "You should have led with that..." No, Karen. The correct response is, "Oh man. We are sooooo sorry. We didn't realize what the situation was. Please accept our apologies." The double down is the best part.
  • 5 0

  • 3 0
@friendlyfoe: It’s cognitive dissonance. In their heads, they are righteous crusaders for the trail system and the great outdoors. In their heads, this guy was the villain here. The jerk. Except then they are confronted with a reality that makes them the villains. They’re the ones being jerks. Their minds can’t reconcile that reality, so they double down in an effort to preserve their self image as heroes. You can see the moment it happens. The big tell is when the woman says, “you should have led off with that,” and then her husband says he did, but he’s pissed off about it.

The mountain biker is dead , long live the mountain biker .
It hurts to say these words but I find its necessary . It should take more then just owning a mountain bike to call yourself a mountain biker . Unfortunately it's no longer the case . Mountain biking use to be a social filter but the recent growth of the sport would support otherwise . As a sport we have lacked in the education department and are now earning the fruits of the lack of efforts . We've made our sport look and sound so incredible that everyone who now enjoys it come with many different attitudes . Some good some not so , but we forget to educate in order to create a better environment for all to
share . How often are the local club facebook pages filled with negative comments ? I had to sign off on my local club page because the constant bitching was getting too annoying and a big waste of time .

As a user group we've lost our moral compass a little , maybe its time we figured our shit out and moved forward . There's no room for hate , spite , greed or any other negative vibes on trails . Mountain biking brings so much joy to all that experience it , I don't see why we shouldn't be able to spread a little more of it in the process .
Remembering in the end we are simply cyclists who enjoy time spent in the forest and we are very lucky to do so .

Happy trails Tim , I hope I see you out there someday

I have a good friend who sustained a serious spinal cord injury a couple years ago during a mtb crash. The result of his injury is permanent disability in the form of paraplegia. He can walk but the lower half strength of his body is significantly compromised. He now relies on a e-mtb to ride with his crew. The amount of a-holes offering nasty comments to him online and in person is crazy. The local trail association refuses to acknowledge state and federal ADA laws and accommodate for his situation policy-wise. What was once his chosen activity to ease the stresses of life is now another source of frustration. Unfortunately this video doesn't surprise me. Disability comes in many forms that may not be readily apparent on first glance.
  • 6 0
That's terrible. Though if I were disabled and relegated to an e-bike, you'd best believe I'm riding MTB trails. Considering that the local trail association can't really 'enforce' anything to anyone, they can kick rocks and bitch and moan about a disabled person riding e-bikes on their trails. I can see the headlines now. Local trail association trying to bar access to disabled mountain biker on an e-bike. Not a good look for any volunteer MTB group. And I can get petty too. I have zero, zero, zero reservations about shaming assholes online.
  • 5 5
" The local trail association refuses to acknowledge state and federal ADA laws and accommodate for his situation policy-wise." What form would this accommodation take? Should people have licenses or permits to operate e-bikes on trails? Not trying to be a dick; I've had a spine injury myself and could easily have been in your buddy's position. Evergreen seems to be rather hands-off regarding e-bikes, recommending alternate trails or fire roads as the best options. I think what Evergreen is trying to avoid is conflict with land management departments with whom they have worked to build trails that will be used by bikes and people, and e-bikes fall into an uncomfortable gray area with the intended use.
  • 4 0
@twozerosix: That's a good question and completely in the hands of the trails org, land owner(s), and local gov depts. I am not referring to Evergreen. There is actually no "uncomfortable gray area" when it comes to ADA law. You are correct so far as formal enforcement is concerned, but my friend just wants to ride his bike without the judgement and criticism. He's got enough crap to deal with day to day without jerks making comments.
  • 3 0
@Almazing: Yeah, so now he's in a weird position...does he personally advocate for policy change or keep quiet? E-mtb hate is strong in a lot of areas. I know people personally who are sympathetic to disabled riders but that sympathy stops well short of policy accomodations. Disabled riders face potential ostracization just by speaking up.
  • 5 1
@jubilee55: I still can't believe that able-bodied people would even think to ostracize disabled persons when they want to enjoy the same things able-bodied people take for granted. Considering that the state and federal government already back him, it would probably be best to meet with the trail association and discuss trail access for those that are disabled.
  • 5 0
@Almazing: The trail org is well aware and uninterested in pursuing anything beyond lip service. Until my friend, the city, the land owner, or the trail org (all of whom are aware of this) push the issue nothing will happen. His only option now is to accept the real potential for jabs and judgement every time he rides. It's a shitty situation that I probably wouldn't handle as well as he has.
  • 2 0
@jubilee55: Yup, policy is going to be way easier to change than people's attitudes.

As Tom requests this is a great opportunity to have empathy for the two able bodied cyclists who clearly have other issues going on. They directed their sadness/anger in the wrong way at the wrong person. Who knows what is going on in their life.

When so many of the trails we all ride are of dubious legality, I don't know how so many people take issue with allowing ebikes on official trails. Surely they are doing the exact same thing as me half the time - Riding stuff they possibly shouldn't? I am lucky in that access is not an issue for me though... If it was I can perhaps see where the guy is coming from but man did he approach the situation wrong!

What I do know is that in this example, where the rider is disabled, there is absolutely no complaint from me... Ebikes are incredible for trail access for people with disabilities, whether hidden or not. The real issue is with ebikes is people wanting instant gratification and/or to be lazy, and as they reap the reward of that themselves, perhaps we all need to chill out about ebikes a bit?

I think much of this has to do with the overall self-righteous effect that online discourse tends to create. Of course we'll never know for sure, but, this guy probably is in some way involved in the often times raging ebike debate online - obviously on the side against them. It probably built up elevated sensitivity and tension, which creates this almost impulsive reaction at any semblance of something confirming of his priors IRL.

So, you know, he probably hears the whine of the electric motor before the rider arrives, then - not being familiar with adaptive wheelchairs - it all probably added up to some snap judgment of it being some kind of electric recreational vehicle. Then of course, the couple appears guilty of the classic human failing of rather than just apologizing, stupidly clinging to an obviously wrong position that they've committed to, because they've committed to it (e.g., "you should have led with that").

This happens in many contexts. Mask shaming is pretty common these days for example, but, I have a friend who has serious panic attacks from wearing masks and has been yelled at for sometimes putting her mask down briefly to try and calm down. So, like others have been saying, take this as a time to think about subtlety, nuance, and complexity in ALL of its manifestations, not just those that reinforce your priors.

In any case, a very terrible encounter, no doubt, but like with most of these cases, I don't think that there's much to "learn" here beyond the narrow confines of this incident. If we need to learn anything, it's that the reason why these flashpoints are so enraging is precisely because they are so beyond the pale of ordinary behavior, i.e., they are not representative of the typical encounter riding. All the cries of "what is wrong with people", are overwrought.

Maybe its a lack of common sense but if someone is piloting a 'vehicle?' like that, with their feet strapped in, its pretty obvious they are disabled.
But moreover, who is this sanctimonious dick to dictate rules to other park users?

Mountain biking is a growing sport, it's becoming more main stream. That means you're going to see a larger cross section of society on the trail. Hate to tell you but that cross section is sometimes going to include bad apples. The couple in the video are an example of the typical "Get off my lawn, Not in my backyard etc" Most likely retired or close to it, acting out to prove to themselves they still have some sort of control in their lives which is obviously not as great as they would want.

@chriskneeland: the first thing the guy told them was that it was a handicapped vehicle. He later told them he couldn’t walk. It was immediately obvious to me and should have been obvious to them. This has everything to do with that guy being a dick to a handicapped trail user. The fact is, he is not the trail police like he was acting like he was and he has no authority to do what he did. He also should have known, just by seeing a quad chair user on the trail that the user was handicapped and he has a right to be there. He also appeared to be trying to act hard or like he was a badass in front of the girl he was with. That’s just pathetic. Either way, he was a dick.

Mr. Morris, you are indeed a class act. A better man than me. In the PB Friday Fails page, I wrote some tongue-in cheek response about a punishment for those 2. I now realize I have been too harsh and piling on. Instead of gritty carbon paste, I would substitute Slick Honey for their 12 hour, saddle-less seatpost ride through rock gardens punishment. I hope they make amends with you and the community there.

It's very hard to argue with a genius. It's nigh on impossible to argue with an idiot
  • 3 0
Ignorance is not an excuse for being a dick. If you don't want to end up getting vilified on the internet, approach situations you don't understand with respect and compassion. I hope this video's viral success brings awareness to these mobility devices, so that when people encounter them in the wild, they will be supportive instead of judgmental.
  • 3 0
Another extremist against anything motorized. A park is for everyone to enjoy. If they need help because of a handicap so be it. I hope he continues to enjoy riding there despite what that idiot says. That’s not how a mt biker should treat another mt biker.
  • 4 1
I'm a disabled mountain biker. I have cerebral palsy. I ride a mountain bike a lot better than I walk. Those people were slow to figure out that obviously it wasn't an e-bike but an accessibility device. Lesson learned about jumping to conclusions, I hope.

That said, they probably had no idea what they were looking at, and there's a reason why a lot of MTBers (including me) don't like e-bikes on their local trails. The practical consequence of their presence: it doubles the speed of riders on a lot of terrain. It also lets a lot of people get to remote trails or on top of difficult climbs that you used to have to "earn" with your legs. This means more novices who don't know how to ride with etiquette or skill. I've had e-bikers scream at me to "get out of the way" passing on technical ups or coming down trials where I have the right of way. One guy on a Turbo Levo wanted to fight me after my friend, a tiny woman and excellent MTBer, politely pointed out the right of way rules after he nearly wrecked us. I'm sure they're fun, just like motorcycles are. But they don't belong on most public trails.

Accessibility devices are obviously an entirely different issue. But I get why they were mixed up.

Tom meets a Ken and Karen on the trail.

Thanks for recording and sharing this poor behavior. Let’s all do better than those two idiots did.
  • 3 0
I appreciate and respect Tim's response and wishes, and the good will that it represents. I also appreciate that these people were doxxed and not-so-politely informed of the wrongness of their ways days ago.

Nothing but great respect to Tom for staying clear and acting cool in this situation. Kindness is often forgotten nowadays. I wish to see more disabled persons get access to our great sport and hope his message will be heard also by the d-bag of this video so that this ignorant character can reflect on his behaviour. Tom your daily fight is not only to get of the bed or in a chair but also to build emphasis by other people in a very noble way.
  • 2 0
Watching the video even though you can only see the riders feet strapped in and the wheels, it looks pretty obvious to me that he has a disability and this is an adaptive vehicle. Even if Mr. D-Bag wasn't sure he could have started the conversation with something much different (like what is that bike or where did you get that) and probably figured out that it was an adaptive ride.
  • 3 0
WOW! - Those two clowns should be banned from mountain biking for life. They simply do not deserve to enjoy the mountains. I hope karma finds them around one of Life's switchbacks sometime soon.
  • 2 0
I am wondering why this guy would challenge someone with a disability, he should have step off the trail and allowed Tom to pass & applauded him as he was riding by. Sound like this guy is a newbie to aMTB and thinks he is a trail monitor.
I have done over three-thousand miles on my eMTB on trail I wasn't suppose to be on and have never had anyone challenge me about riding my eMTB like this guy was doing. This guy is going to get his ass-kicked by someone and his wife/girlfriend is going to have to watch.
  • 3 0
Tom, you handled that so well, good on ya man. That dude missed a cool opportunity to chat up a pretty rad person. I would of loved to check out that chair. Thanks for showing us what class looks like.

I live in Indiana and ride at Brown County a lot. I have personally seen this it truly is sad. People here just don't respect the sport they don't see it as going out and riding and having fun. Everyone here is too focused on there Strava time and how fast they can do a clime or complete a loop. The man was probably angry because Tom was going to slow for him and he messed up his time. The man also doesn't understand the difference between a handicapped vehicle and a regular e-bike. This trail weed patch is a long flow trail that does have a sigh at the to that says no e-bikes but this isn't a e-bike. Sadly there are people like this I truly feel his anger and confusion, I've been stoped like that before, some guy got in my face because I messed up his time on a climb because he was going the wrong direction on the trail.
  • 2 0
I have a breathing condition which has become a lot worse since this mask mandate. I have not been able to ride for a year. They finally opened up a park near me. I found my self suffocating within a mile. I am very fit, but my O2 sats are about 92. E-bikes are not allowed anywhere i ride. I love to ride and without one I wont be able to ride any more. I previously used to ride at top 100/4000 lb on Strava on any segment on an enduro.

There is an unreasonable venomous hatred for anything E-Bike in the USA. These bikes don't make you faster if you are already fast. They allow the weaker riders to ride at trail speed and help anyone go longer. This hive mentality hurts the industry and is holding back the MTB community. LBS aren't selling many E-MTBS in the USA as a result of this hate. The hate makes people feel the need to cause trouble for anyone on an E-Bike including those who are disabled.

Doubt anyone will read this, but if you do, I hope I put some ideas in your head. Have an open mind the next time you see someone on an e-bike. Even a fit rider wont be faster than any best effort segment on a normal bike.

 Disgusting behaviour. Absolutely shameful. Abhorrent.
  • 3 0
I never get bothered by people with cerebral palsy, prosthetic legs, or super obese people poaching trails on ebikes. One time I saw a paralized guy cranking one of these bikes with his arms. Mad respect.
  • 3 0
Whatever, if the wheel chair guy didn’t want sweet revenge he would have never posted the video. Dox the perp like the internet we are! This one might actually deserve it for once.
  • 3 0
I don’t understand people. I would feel blessed to be able to ride my bike and be happy that the guy can have a bit of fun as well.

I'd be cheering the disabled fella on,...that could be any one of us after our next ride man. Come to Michigan and ride, no a*sholes allowed (posted at every trailhead) LMAO

Race, politics, and kindness aside, does anyone actually know what the policy is on e-bikes for handicapped people? In the state of Indiana or your own State? It would seem they should be an exception or have always been an exception.

But then consider, what if you are 65+ or have an injury like Paul Bass or Martyn Ashton? The line doesn't seem clear anymore between e-assist, e-powered, and actual environmental impact concerns. Trailhead signs are usually not that complicated.
  • 1 0
The MTB community is based off love and kindness not d-bag elitism. Respect towards the trails and each other is the best way to grow the sport.... These two jerks give MTB a bad name and are not welcome in the sport until they fix their attitude towards others.
  • 1 0
Thanks for the fantastic message Tom. I don't know you, but I have an immense amount of respect for you. The bike community, and the world at large, would be much better off with more empathy and kindness towards all people, in all regards. Even in tough situations like this. Ride on man!
  • 1 0
The reason to be courteous and acknowledge everyone on a trail is not only part of being human but they could very well be the someone who helps you repair your bike or provides medical care to your body or comforts you while waiting for an ambulance they called for you.
  • 1 0
What a douchebag! Unfortunately, there's more of those hanging around than we'd wish for....on or off the trail...an attitude and intelligence problem I guess. Fortunately, there're more kind and empathetic people around than those who are not...
  • 3 0
Ride on Tom Morris - I, for one, hope I'll have the honor of meeting you on a singletrack someday & I'm obviously not alone. Stay Rad.
  • 1 0
Thank you Pinkbike for running this article - Situations like this one and the idiots who trigger them have to be exposed if we want to make our sport and humanity better. I sincerely hope that people who know those two tuna brains confront them and fall on them like a ton of bricks. Stupidity seems to have no limit in North America these days.
  • 3 1
WTF. A Couple of Virtue Signaling Fools without a Shred of Empathy in them. They are NOT MOUNTAINBIKERS. Good on Tom for having the self respect to stand up for himself and what is right!
  • 2 0
This is my home trail system...I am so disappointed to see people behaving this way. On another note, I'd love to see what that guy's rig looks like - Our trails can be pretty gnarly!
  • 1 0
I am on the side of the handicap individual. It’s all about sharing the trails, being inclusive of one another, and supporting each other. I have no tolerance for people like that guy who questioned the guy on a motorized wheelchair!
  • 1 0
“The message is kindness. As we move forwards I would just really appreciate if we could look at each other with a little more empathy and try and get out there and make this place a little bit better.”—Tom Morris

Well said Tom! Those words of wisdom are an inspiration to try harder to be patient, kind, friendly, and more empathic.
  • 3 0
With all the unfactual crap that gets posted on pinkibike about anything E, I wouldn’t be surprised if the two dickheads were part of this site.
  • 3 0
Those riders know who they are and their friends know who they are, and they have to live with their behaviour to others now.
  • 2 0
That guy is a fucking kook. Everyone deserves to mountain bike even if that means someone that has to use an adaptive mountain bike. I surely hope that the guy with the big mouth gets his ass handed to him on the trail.
  • 3 2
I'm a professional trail builder and I brought my gf an ebike so we could ride together She has had two kidney transplants and doesn't have the strength to ride without assistance. Where I live, most public mtb trails ban ebike use so we stick to the gravel roads and some private trails. It's disheartening we can't ride some of the easier trails in the Nation Forest she would enjoy. I get why ppl are "concerned" about trail sustainability. We need to build better trail, not ban ebikes. I think ebikes will double the ppl riding, lower traditional bike cost, bring in more money for sustainable public trails, and increase demand for bike parks from the more advanced riders.
  • 1 0
I haven't posted a comment on pinkbike for ages, first of all if people didn't keep making such a buzz about hating on ebikes this wouldnt be as much of a problem anyway. Who gives a stuff what you ride, if you're out there enjoying yourself and bikes. I know Tom is saying about kindness and not retaliating which I understand, but I want that guy to know what a class A prick he is. I see cyclists near where I live with missing legs and all sorts and I have got nothing but admiration for any person esoecially when they are disabled who wants to get out there and be part of the world and enjoy themselves and anyone who wants to challenge that is a cock. It's a trail. It will be fine.
  • 1 0
It's astonishing to me how the majority of comments here missed Tom's point. He is a great example of how we should treat and think about others. Overall most people would say I'm a pretty welcoming and nice guy, but I've done some really stupid things that I regret later. Fortunately, they weren't caught on video, but if they were I'd really hope there was some room for forgiveness.
  • 3 0
I NEVER WRITE COMMENTS BUT THIS GUY DESERVES A SWIFT KICK IN THE NUTS!!! HUMANITY AT IT'S BEST!! TOM YOU ROCK! Run him over next time!
  • 1 0
I really can't stand to associate with nosy whiners. I can tell he's a phonie just by the fact that he's stopped Trailside, not sweating, and doesn't seem to have burned many calories at all. Unless I've crashed or lost a bike part, I'm not aking a break. Slack ass lazy wannabe poseur on a bike that greatly exceeds his skill level. I will remain a kind and humble person on my 13 year old Fuji Tahoe, and continue to shred past this new generation of jack wads on trophy bikes. This makes me want that 30 acre parcel of cheap country land even more.
  • 1 0
This guy is such a hater of e-bikes that rather than take a second to think before he spoke he starts ripping into a guy in a wheelchair. However even after him saying I can't walk the guy was still rude to him. I spent six months in a wheelchair and it took me almost a year to learn to walk after that. I can ride my mountain bike better than I can walk now. If I saw a guy on the trail in electric wheelchair I would be amazed. I would have been rooting him on. When you don't have the ability to walk and you're out in the middle of the woods you are so vulnerable. I think it's good he shared this video
  • 1 0
Classic case of the kid everyone wanted to punch in the face in grade school, but didn't. The wavering in his voice within the first few syllables said it all. Absolute kook. I hope this video finds its way to those around him so that he can be constantly reminded of how tiny and insignificant he is. I bet his wifey pegs him regularly.
  • 1 0
Why are so many people so capable of this much hate? What if it was YOU who was wheelchair bound and would still love to go out on the trails? Don’t be so self centered. I know, we’re Americans, so we can be bastards all we want or whatever, but really: shut up. Nobody wants to hear you toxic comments about someone’s else’s unfortunate position.
  • 2 1
The deputy director said 'off road wheel chairs" will be provided. He did not say "motorized wheel chairs" provide, being g roughly 5-8k a piece. Dude had a motorized bike, director did not confirm EBIKES OR MOTORIZED BIKES ARE ALLOWED? Some needs to post the actual rules. Yeah chicken legged lycra boy was a jerk, but probably had a valid point if motorized/ebikes weren't allowed, no exceptions..
  • 1 0
What I'm confused about is it's a downhill section of the trail and everyone in the video seems to be heading downhill. So this dick is apparently riding with his wife downhill so slow that a disabled rider on an electric wheelchair is able to catch them or get close enough that they felt the need to get off their bikes turn around and walk up and confront him.

Honestly, what kind of idiot couldn't tell this guy was seriously disabled at 1st glance? Honestly? What a dick.
  • 1 0
 Tom, thanks from the UK.

I have no idea if this is happening here too, but I’ve shared on FB to spread your wise and humbling words.

Thanks again - I’m naive enough to have imagined this doesn’t happen in the trail community where you are or over here - a grim day for me during a grim year......
  • 1 0
I would say post is Valid! Every once in a while we all need be confronted so we might change our perspectives. Note the request is not in Rage. The poster simply asks for EMPATHY ON. For Gosh Sakes have some Respect! EChair or Ebike or whateverz in the world. Respect! Empathy on People! My first last and only post to anything... ThanknYou.
  • 1 0
Checked out Tom’s post on FB and donated to the Challenged Athlete Foundation he posted on Sept 2. It’s difficult not to focus on the jack-holes in his post but instead relish in Tom’s positive message. We need more of who Tom is in the world!! ...and maybe some shaming of the couple for being complete idiots!

Don't worry man, the most part of riders aren't like these two persons.
Seriously, what's wrong with them ? If they want to piss other riders off, they must stay at home or whatever and don't ride a bike... sucker...
  • 4 0
dicks happen, but to brighten things up, as a disabled rider on ebike, I've met on trails only kindness and help when needed
  • 1 0
I have to admit when I saw that video yesterday I imagined it had to be some kind of spoof and not real, as I didn't think anyone was really quite that "douchey" in reality, I even thought the voice was exaggerated whiny. I am still a little surprised that it was actually real.
  • 5 1

It's clear you've missed that. Maybe just try not being a d*ck, see how that goes.
  • 1 0
Live and let live. This is another perfect example of people who are offended for the sake of taking offense. More people need to stop and evaluate the situation a bit better, and ask themselves, "how does this truly affect me, and if it does; what steps should I take to provoke change".
Take away the obvious factor that this is clearly a bike designed specifically for disabled people, and add in the potential for not understanding the situation to it's fullest.
While I agree, that we all need to do out part to protect our trails and support out communities, the major error this guy made was assuming, rather than inquisitively questioning before coming to his conclusion.
While I feel that his behavior was for lack of a better word, disgusting; I also feel this is a learning opportunity for people to educate.
I feel this is the stance more people need to take with the issues of the world today.
It reallg doesn't matter if your a liberal supporting rights for all, or a conservative holding onto the morals and values of yesterday, were all guilty of making those assumptions and aggressively coming to our conclusions whether your motivated by historical values or your so called "woke".
I think the message of empathy is truly the path we all need to take.
Lets all stop waiting for the other person to stop talking just to voice your own opinion, and actually listen to what each and everybody have to say.
Only then can we get past our differences, align ourselves with one another, and at the very least, agree to disagree.
Live and let live.
Thank you kindly Tom Morris for your message of empathy.
Here's to hoping the right people are listening.

I am philosophically apposed to Ebikes on the trail. That being said, I would never berate some stranger out on the trail riding a Ebike & obviously I'm "not" against Ebikes for people with health issues where it would allows them to ride. Only a moron or a real A-hole would be against that.
  • 1 0
There is nothing sicker or more inspiring than watching people rip on four wheel mountain bikes. Indeed overcoming any adversity is inspiring. Ive mostly only experienced inclusivity and friendly behavior in mountain biking but as the sport grows it will attract more small mindedness. Its all our jobs to continue to be inclusive and friendly to keep that culture going. Its important and it sets our sport apart. We should be proud of it and foster it.
  • 1 0
@Pinkbike I've reached out to Tom Morris to ask if he or Bowhead Corp could do some sort of article on Pinkbike to demonstrate what offroad adaptive equipment looks like these days, and explain that not every offroad wheelchair is going to be hand-cranked.
  • 1 0
Shame on pink bike for protecting these useless human beings. They should be identified, have their names dragged through the mud, shamed on social media so everyone knows what kind of people they are, and left to feel unwelcome in the biking community like they did you the man they decided to be so ignorant too.
  • 1 0
Couple people were a*sholes on video and paid a massive price for it.

Judging by comments on "what they deserve" there's a whole lot of people here that are far bigger a*sholes than they were. All talk, no critical thinking.

What a dickhead...Those two get me sick,if you are wrong, just stop arguing and said sorry...If the father of that guy is watching this, plz go and slap in the face to your son, never is too late,if you are too old, 100% there is a ton of people ready to teach them....
This is one of the worst in trail action I could imagine...I trust the karma thing, that dickhead had a very bad Karma now,I wish him flat after flat tire, maybe he can learn how important is being able to walk.

People may ask if they see someone hammering past them on a climb (or downhill) on an eBike if they are authorized to be on the trail, but they need to do so with some tact. There are cases for eBikes, and every person regardless of ability should be able to shred. Be inquisitive, and kind.

  • 1 1
I think part of it could be that folks don't realize that many states have exemptions for adaptive equipment that allows disabled folks to use what are essentially electric go-carts on trails.

It would be real easy to see Tom's wheelchair (he wasn't riding an hand-bike) like an electric ATV and think he's some guy abusing the trails.
  • 3 0
Hoping the seething passive-aggressive poison that his girl gives him after this went viral is enough punishment for him...
