Apr 26, 2018
by Red Bull Bike

Rob Warner ventures into the wilderness of Wales for a candid encounter with one of the GREATEST downhill racers of all time; Rachel Atherton. The 5 times Overall World Cup winner takes Rob on a tour of Atherton Racing HQ. Rob catches up with Rachel’s mother who sugarcoats nothing. Rachel makes Rob squeal like a little baby and Warner wrecks himself himself trying to keep up with Rachel on her local DH course.

How do you know? And what does SAS stand for?

SAS is the British special forces, like the SEALs or Green Berets. I think he might be taking the piss

@megatryn: in the USA sassiness is the purview of gay nightclubbers, but then things are different in Britain. . .

Everytime I try to keep up with a better rider I crash too. No shame when it is an Atherton though. Sadly it happens to me when I try to keep up with my 3 yearold on her push bike, but hey, we all have our struggles. . .

I think shes gna need to mature a bit first...hopefully she'll realize she's misn out on creating awesome, long lasting relationships. The active years go by fast unlike the post racing years where she'll then be bummed she didnt establish better relations with these other ladies.
  • + 10
@jrocksdh: What are you talking about?? She gets on great with everyone, she's a great ambassador for dh and cycling, actively encourages people to compete and get into the sport and gets on with and congratulates her peers. There is a difference between being focused and being arrogant
  • + 2
@sewer-rat: @sewer-rat: He's making a reference to something Rachel said in the video -- that she's far too competitive to hang out with the other girls.

I don't know if this is a good or bad thing, or if it's a matter of needing to mature -- I don't think that's fair. That's just the way she is. I'd wager you'd find a good number of elite athletes at the top of their game who would say the same thing in any sport. They tend not to be an agreeable bunch. It's part of what gets them there.
  • + 1
@sewer-rat: her spoken word is what im referencing.
  • + 1
She doesn't need to mature. It's like having a pet chicken. Can you be friends with you pet chicken, buds? Then just turn the switch to savage "sorry bro, let me crush you soul and kill you and roast you for dinner for my survival?" It's like ya were friends!! But now I'm going to crush your soul!
  • + 1
@brownierice: as a distant viewer i noticed a change in her demeanor this year...more smiley and congratulatory towards her competition. Enjoying/respectful of the challengers.
Great stuff!
  • + 1
@jrocksdh: yes! From a racers perspective you put literal countless hours (and years) of time and energy into training, bike selection, track analysis, etc with such precise focus is a lot of work to get to the top. A lot of work you'll be dam*Ed to let someone take that from you. Especially for a female where there is little sponsorship available or even the resources to become such an amazing DH rider. Thus, your income and existence is on the line. Having that high level of focus is vital to her success and at the end of the day being "friends" doesn't present with any benefit. Like she said, it's not that she doesn't like them, she's just a competitor.

... The only reason why I notice any of this is because I know what it's like to focus and train for racing and put everything you can put into it and be aggressive the week before a race. You put so much you don't have the energy to be friends you just there to execute... And you do and it turns out great. Then u can have a beer... And realize you have to return to work on Monday where no cares or even knows bc there are no sponsors. Anyway. She's the best. I wish I could go a fraction of her speed.

@brownierice: yep, mad respect for her and all those at wc level.
