Redwoods DH - Crankworx Rotorua

The old-skool dual slalom discipline has made a welcome return to the limelight. Crankworx decided to bring this thrilling format to NZ and, not only that, the course that was built for the competition will be left for the local community to use at their leisure!  Did you get that bottle open yet Mr. Strait?

Awesome! How about a bike check?

This has nothing to do with Crankworx, but I figured DS enthusiasts are reading this: If you had a SS for DS and a 17t rear end, what would be a good front chain ring size, for say, the Sea Otter DS? Mid 30s end of the spectrum, or low 40s? I have a 44 on there now for street but that might be a little harder to get back up to speed....

 38 or 36

Tough to say. At Sea Otter, you need to be quick out of the gate since its a flat start but need to be able to sprint at the end when youre flying. I'd say somewhere in the 40s. Depends though. Do you want to be quick out of the gate or be able to hammer at the end? Best thing to do is get yourself at 10spd drivetrain and run a 34t or 36t up front.

@brightbmx: Gonna stay SS, but that last stretch to the line might need 40 x 17. Thanks for the advice!

Back in the day, you had to have gears, not sure if that is still the rule.

@Ashevillerider: Damn I didn't know that. Will check.

@Ashevillerider: Dude from USAC says it's legal unless SOC requested a ban and he doesn't see such a request. I'd rather just drink beer than get my ass kicked, but it's a small field at my age, and they need victims. Who knows, maybe I'll sneak onto the podium...

You can race on a single speed. Plenty of people in Cat 2 and Cat 3 do

When I was racing, I was always most comfortable on something close to 2:1, or 1 tooth less than that in the rear, so a 36/17 would probably be my choice (on 26" wheels that is). Sea Otter is very fast though, especially at the bottom. If I remember correctly, I did shift gears at Sea Otter.

 @brightbmx: those are my people!

Anyone remember the Lopes vs Peaty duelling days?

You really get to see the skills in DS. Even if I had those skills, I could never make a bike move up and down as quickly as those guys and girls. Impressive.
  • + 2
Totally! That's personally why I like DS so much too... feels like it combines all skills into one event.
  • + 1
@filmdrew: You can also suck at it, be old and race Cat 2 like me. Someone has to get beat to make the brackets work.

"Its fast, its quick, and if you blink its over"....I know that feeling.
  • + 2
Haha I must be older than dirt, more like grass, because this is not old school dual slalom
  • + 2
What about the kid with the soccer ball dab photo bomb! Classic
  • + 2
How stoned is that kid on the right at the very beginning?! ;-)
  • + 2
 1:35 ....just wow for Slavik
  • + 2
Looks like a fun course. I love that head to head racing action.
  • + 2
 Long live slalom!!
  • + 1
Kyle Strait: Bring your OG Knee Pads back.
  • + 1
Slavik is fast as f*ck. Seriously.
  • + 5
I take my hat off to Strait. He's built like a tank yet even on this pedally slalom courses he just got beat.
  • + 1
I just wonder how long will the kid at 00:59 not wash his face.
  • + 1
 Kyle looks like a Lego.

 Yew! Yeah Ruca!
