Ecuador DeVinci Enduro Series Round 3: Alausi

Sep 28, 2017
by Alejandro Janeta

After a big mid-season break, the Ecuador DeVinci Enduro Series resumes at one of the best venues in the country: Alausi. Located right in the heart of the country, this small city offers big mountains with amazing trails. Also, this place really embodied one of the best traits of enduro racing in Ecuador, raw and natural terrain.

As in 2016, the first stage started at 3,500 meters, dropping right into business with a huge rock garden that is actually part of an ancient road that has been used for many generations of farmers in the area. If the big rocks are not enough, make the racers start by pairs and blind, as no practice is allowed at all. After the big rock garden, the trail continued on an open track with loose rocks and then dropped into a skinny singletrack lined with shrubs. To finish, a fast open section, and an awkward steep rock garden.

Racers started in pairs and rushed to enter first the rock garden, although what really mattered was to exit it first and in one piece.

Sharp and big rocks.
Did I mention it is rocky
Did I mention it was rocky??

The second stage was a mix of high-speed track and singletrack. The first half was open and not really techy but then the track took a big turn into an amazing singletrack, with switchbacks and dust. Then a final chute of rocks and roots that required full commitment. After this, racers tackled the biggest liaison of the day, 10 kilometers long and almost 700 meters of vertical gain.

Rocks for all
Steep and techy.

Up the big mountain.
Up the big mountain again.

With a big liaison and big bikes maybe a push was needed.
There was some time to enjoy the views while pushing your bike.

Stage 3 was the favorite of many racers, 5 kilometers of a good mix of technical, fast and flowy trails. The first section featured some old tracks with big rocks and ruts. After a little climb, the racers faced a mostly flowy section full of moon dust and nice views. Another climb led to a technical singletrack full of rocks and big holes. Finally, the trail shared the second half of Stage 2.

Just mountains.
...because this landscape may easily distract you.

Moon dust and switchbacks are a great mix.
Moon dust to spare.

Fast straights were interrupted with tight, loose switchbacks.

Better to stay inside the track.
The moon dust may hide the danger.
Got to be careful.

To end the day, and for the first time in the series, Stage 4 was a small urban circuit, with lots of awkward turns, small sprints, and sets of stairs.
