After the flat-out
Junior Finals, the Elite racers are now against the clock for the first time this week. See who has come out on top from the first timed session of the weekend below.
In the Elite Women's racing Camille Balanche was unstoppable as she held the lead through all five splits, she is looking tough to beat at her home race. Coming closest to the 2022 overall champion was Rachel Atherton who is looking very fast this week and could be a real threat for not just the podium but maybe the win this weekend. Completing the top three was Vali Höll as she crossed the line just over six seconds back.
For the Elite Men, it was Andreas Kolb who kick-started his weekend with a top result. Andreas managed to keep consistently within the top three riders to ensure he came out on top once he reached the finish. Loris Vergier would end his day in 2nd although he was still nearly half a second back on the fastest time. The only other rider within a second of the hard-charging Austrian was Angel Suarez taking third place, 0.823 back.

The downtime podcast interview with him recently is great!
The interviewer says "you seem to be everyone's favorite Austrian!" And without missing a beat Kolb replies "not mine, I like David Trummer"
Class act that guy. And fast AF.
I was pointing out that we obsess over women's ability to procreate, as though it's somehow absurd that she would come back and compete after having a child. Why the f*ck wouldn't she? She's an amazing mountain biker.
Sam is a legend, but coming back in 2023 is near impossible. So many youngsters coming up and folk flying from all around the globe, the sport has moved on significantly since he left.
He is only back because he could no longer touch the big 3 in Enduro.
Gonna be controversial to some NP fan boys but the new carbon NP is slower than the old bike.... just look at the Fort William nationals results. (Big Al especially as he knows every pebble at Fort Bill and that was a short track taped for nationals)
Both legends for sure and epic they are still racing.
Gwin has had some bad luck with injuries.
Sam must have had an abysmal run to end up so far back... curious if he had a flat or
Something. (Or maybe 2 flat... pedals?)
Gwin was podiuming last year toward the end of the season. Man looked to be on pace for threatening the W this year prio to destroying his elbow.
But I agree about Hill. He's got some significant work to put in if he wants to even qualify.
Let's be honest, the top 30 for finals is gonna be tough when Greg was 30th today!
Hill got smoked today. Miles off the pace.
Racing is racing, it doesn't care what you did many years ago
It's funny how many guys run their mouths when they can hardly ride a bike themselves. To answer your question, no I haven't raced WC, but neither have you, so what's your point lol.
Plus I didn't ask you that I was asking mr "I've raced DH and none of you have"
Yeh, I race and for my category and age and can forever claim the fastest over 40 amateur race time ever down Fort William, coz they are changing the track now to make it shorter.
Rachel has the benefit of riding Dyfi all the time if she wants, came from once dominating, that place is fantastic. A wee bit of luck too with 2 of the top women out/injured. She would still podium for sure though. But the men's field is much more competitive than the women's field, just look at the times. 1st to 3rd in the women's is 1st to not qualifying in the men's. You have to compare apples with apples when between the tape. It's a brutally honest sport when you are in that start gate and the pips go. Nobody on Pinkbike messages is gonna help you out saying you were not trying. That's a stupid comment to make about a racer pitching up at a world cup!
I am sure Sam just turned up to roll down and get smoked by the kids as well as the elites. Sure...
I would say it's partly the new bike, just guessing from Fort William times and what riders on the new bike did on the old bike last year and this year's track was shorter and conditions were as perfect as they could get there.
Bro just calm down, eat your humble pie, and enjoy watching the *actual* fast guys.
Cheers
Chill. I am entitled to an opinion, no need to shout.
What’s she going to do when she has a good practice session?
Goldstone. 19
Jordan: 18
Finn: 23
Greenland: 26
Luca: 26
Amaury is only 27
Daprela is 22
Remy and Luke
Craik is what 20-21?
Loris is 27
Loic is 29
And that "old" guard that's falling off... those dudes are still fast as hell. The numbers of guys that are going to be retiring and/or falling off over the next 2-3 years is actually pretty small. So getting top 50 is not going to be easy.
Then you got the ladies.
Best young group of women we've had in awhile.
I'm not sure about this, but because she started from the gate and she finished 4th in the Overall last year, she might advance to the semi-final race because she's a Protected rider.
Does anyone else know if this is correct?
(I'm reading UCI Rule 4.11.014 for this.)
Overall racer I'd give that to ACC because of her BMX record and her DS/4X wins.
But DH racer... that's Atherton. Especially considering what she's come back from to continue winning.
But I'd say this conversation is very much like the Brady vs. Montana conversation.... Brady pretty much ended that by winning with Tampa. If Atherton wins a couple more and most definitely if she wins another overall... conversation is over.... for DH racer...

Before I get pulled apart for my tongue in cheek comment, yes, I'm aware he's just come out of hospital and was a doubt to even be here.
I think they'll both be interesting to watch this season.
The facts are that Goldstone beat Williams last year and won the overall. He then won Hardline as a side quest in his first year attempting it. He's had significantly less training time than Williams due to being in and out of the hospital the last couple months due to ruptured appendix. He was re-admitted to the hospital literally days ago, and still placed only a few spots back from Williams in qualies.
We'll see what Williams does this year, but there is absolutely no doubt at all who is currently the most impressive mountain biker between the two. It's not even close.
He beat Jordan for the overall 2 years in a row, and then won hardline. All evidence points to Jackson being faster than Jordan on average. Jordan will be faster some days, because that’s racing, but the numbers show who is faster on average.
Who said Jackson is a deity?
The actual point is that people can't read a comment about Goldstone without some "bUT wHaT AbOuT JoRdAn!!" reply. Go read the parent comment then the first reply. Why are people so butthurt about Goldstone that they feel the need to bring up Williams every time he's mentioned?
Do you think a ruptured appendix is nothing serious? Most people have immediate surgery to get it removed, but this kid is toughing it out so he can race this season. He's probably pumped full of antibiotics at this point which are well known to affect athletic performance, and he's still in placing in the top 10. That's incredible.
