I still can't believe they award a rainbow jersey for this.

This dumb race should be replaced with e enduro? Why doesn't enduro have a World Champs? Get your shit together EWS.
  • 4 5
Agreed and I like e-bikes. Racing e-bikes is pointless unless it's a situation like enduro where they only time the downhills and the overall race speed is above the speed cutoff. Even then it's iff because there are always little uphill sections.
  • 5 0
@DoubleCrownAddict: EWS isn't UCI sanctioned. They have the Trophy of Nations which is similar
  • 7 6
@Dustfarter: It really requires an intense course and I love the climbing stages. Out on the east coast there is a ton of up down sharp climb areas and they really work well pushing hard on an E bike while still maxing the heart rate. Would be great footage too.

I only watch when rob warner competes. Smile

 @DoubleCrownAddict:

They do... get your shit together.

@melonhead1145: Similar but different, copying the motocross race of a completely different sport.
It's not a bad race, but "riders will cast aside their individual glory".

There is no enduro world's, and yet their are National enduro championships? I guess it's all a jumble.

I agree, I think e-bikes are great for certain applications but e-bike XC feels like an oxymoron. I'm not sure how exactly UCI World Championship rosters are determined and I know it varies by country but if someone like Wyn Masters lost out on a DH world champs slot so that we can a rainbow jersey for this that doesn't feel good.
  • 2 0
@Ranger92: why is it a problem if he missed out? I can understand the issue if a serious contender missed out.
  • 2 1
@DoubleCrownAddict: you mesn UCI. Dumb comment by the way
  • 3 1
I think it’s cool, racing e-mtb’s. I bet the courses have insanely steep hill climbs as one of the e-features. Looking forward to seeing the highlights.
  • 11 1
@swassskier How about if participants are required to be 68+ with at least one hip transplant and a nagging wife at home to escape? I could get behind that format.
  • 2 4
Unusual for people on PB to be down on something new Smile

People will race anything, get on board.

@mountainmike911: It is so hard to educate ignorant and closed minded people on how basic this concept is. Almost every form of bike racing came from the trickle down effect of a motorized bike. BMX came from motocross/supercross, Cross Country (XC) came from dirt bike trail racing, Enduro MTB came from Enduro dirt bike racing + Downhill racing. Most downhill race courses have a shuttle lift or shuttle truck bringing people to the top. Very few people will do it in the most purist form like 18 year old Matt Fairbrother of New Zeland that rides his bike everywhere including to a race. I can go on and on but like I said, most humans can't even comprehend that current weather disasters are being accelerated by human decisions/actions from the past and present.

I’d love to see you say that to Jerome Gilloux’s Face…
  • 3 0
How about a world champ hill climb enduro where they only time the climbs?
@DoubleCrownAddict:
  • 2 0
@manitunc: Or just a motocross style hill climb where it's so difficult only a few could do it. Would be a fun Red Bull event.

I’m old and ride an ebike and I don’t get this at all. Ebikes are a great thing when the legs and lungs aren’t what they used to be, but “racing” them seems pointless.
  • 15 1
I can see doing events not really possible on normal bike, like "riding up slabs" but yes agree, "eMTB XC" is pointless.
  • 3 0
I don't know any of the rules for the format - that out of the way, if the riders were on bikes with spec motors & batteries and generally allowed to design the bikes however they want otherwise, I could see some appeal to it. That way, the riders have to be smart about when to use the battery power and the most powerful motor won't necessarily win all the time.
  • 21 0
I assume big brands are pushing this. Market trends and $$$$.
  • 5 0
I can see the appeal doing enduro races but not xc . With xc races it must be mostly about battery saving plus short travel ebikes are pointless imo !
  • 4 0
@gorideabicycle: Europe has a big e-bike market. 2019 already exceeded 3 million bikes sold. This probably leads to an unnecessary competition format cyclingindustry.news/electric-bike-sales-now-17-of-all-eu-cycle-sales-growth-rate-accellerating
  • 1 0
@endoguru Kind of agree. Enduro makes sense, IMO, but XC is weird.
  • 5 3
@Chuckolicious: how does enduro make any more sense than XC, if anything it make less sense as you're not racing up any hills where you're more likely to be using the motor. End of the day it all a bit of fun, clearly isnt being taken seriously by any of the riders as it shouldnt.
  • 2 0
@xrob: Because Enduro promotes very detailed planning and design. You want to get as much boost for the rider to spend the least amount of energy on the climb, but not degrade their DH performance where the battery and motor have no power impact.
  • 1 2
 @endoguru ,
Supposedly they have used E-Bikes in XC, Cyclocross, and Road Racing for Decades, only that no one knew they were E-Bikes. I myself am quite happy to see that they now made an Official Class for E-bikes now. LOL.
  • 3 2
I can’t think of a reason why racing ANYTHING isn’t cool. SeaOtter had an emtb race event this year, looked very legit to me. And yes, the strongest/fastest riders win every time in emtb races.
  • 1 0
@mountainmike911: Your ignoring the likely case that the motors, batteries, and software are modified from stock.
  • 1 0
@mountainmike911: Exactly. Humans complete with each other, doesn't matter what it is. It only takes 2 people for the conversation of "I bet I can do X better/faster/longer than you" to eventually come up.

Saying you don't get EMTB racing is a thing is the same as wondering why NASCAR exists given that Formula 1 also exists.
  • 62 0
I'd watch if they did a mass start and rode up the DH course.
  • 23 3
I'd watch if they did a mass start and rode into an active volcano
  • 3 0
It was a mass start riding up the XC downhill, does that count? I think it does actually...
  • 3 0
@bigdood: this actually made me laugh out loud. Appreciate the chuckle.
  • 53 7
Nothing against ebikes, but UCI should not be using its resources for world champs on this.
  • 15 5
all those ressouces could be price money in dh Frown
  • 42 3
 Motocross Country
  • 23 0
I don't see the point of this at all
  • 17 0
Even though it’s a silly category, this is supposed to be an elite level race. If you’re effectively being lapped, especially those finishing 3-5 laps down in a 50min race, you have no business being at a the World Champs whatsoever.

I thought the whole point of the World Champs was to offer competition between the world’s best. Not a handful of genuinely good/fast riders and some other who just felt like going for a ride that day. UCI, sort it out.
  • 16 0
The more I read these results and think about it, the more infuriating it actually all seems. Every dollar spent on this discipline and the really slow riders in it is a dollar that’s not being spent supporting up-and-coming riders, showing promise in a legitimate discipline.

Like, imagine you’re a US junior in XC or DH who’s maybe missed out in selection due to budgetary constraints… and the governing body responsible’s response is “yeah, but we’ve got to find money to send a couple of guys in their 50s to France to make fools of themselves on the world stage, sorry”

This is all just so dumb.
  • 1 0
@speedfreek: I don't think any federation is funding anyone in that race. We are not even sure those riders raced on their respective country jerseys.
  • 1 0
@speedfreek: pretty sure you don’t miss out because of budgetary constraints, they have a set allocation of riders they can send, then I’m pretty sure it’s up to the rider after that.

And obviously e-xc is stupid hence why there’s some people who have no business in an elite race taking part, because the country just needs to give them a jersey
  • 1 1
 @opignonlibre & @toad321

I don’t know enough about how it all works, to be honest, so you may well be right.

It’s still dumb as hell though and I don’t think the UCI should be throwing any resources at it.
  • 1 0
I also think this race format is kinda dumb but this happens in XCO too - especially at world champs where some guys from the fast countries don't make the cut, while slower riders from smaller countries get to race.

Just looking at XCO Worlds results from last year, about 1/3 of the men's field are marked -1LAP or worse (there's a couple -4LAP), either from getting lapped or by the 80% rule. Luca Braidot (currently 3rd in the overall) is among them. I don't think the lapped riders in this race are really an indictment of the race format.... it's the motors that make it lame lol.
  • 16 0
How can you be 5 laps down on an ebike?
It's a 50 minute race - slap it in turbo!!

PS I don't ebike - this seems a ridiculous world champs event.
  • 2 0
My guess is they did not record the DNFs and only registered the completed laps.
  • 7 1
The fellow who was lapped thought he was in a mountain bike race so he brought a bicycle, not a crutch.
  • 16 1
Peter Sagan! What are you doing there?
  • 18 0
Not riding as fast as everyone else apparently.
  • 4 0
Plot twist: He wasn't on an e-bike
  • 17 2
Whoever have the best motor win?
  • 13 1
Winning an ebike anything is like being the tallest midget in the room.

*it's okay, I can use that word...my ex's nephew has achondroplasia, and I was always nice to him. It's like a get out of jail card.
  • 4 1
Lol. Winning on an ebike is like being famous on Instagram.
  • 2 0
 @cirque4: Soo... lucrative then?
  • 15 1
 eMTB XC .... LOL
  • 16 3
Motorized XC? I wonder if there's a name for that?
  • 23 4
Lazy bastards is the name for that
  • 1 0
You mean like some kind of motor-cross race format? Nah that's silly, who'd want to watch that
  • 10 0
The US riders down at the bottom of the eBike championship. No offense to them but I feel like, generally speaking, this is a good thing.
  • 10 1
Sagan only 16th, there must be a point to this after all.
  • 2 0
I'd be curious to know where he lost so much time. Was it raced on the regular XC course ?
  • 6 1
I love my E-Bike but it does seem a bit lame racing them. I mean it is hard enough to stamp out cheating in road cycling let alone motor cheating. Ok, so fair enough if the courses had some insanely hard technical uphill sections were you needed loads of bike skill, that could be fun to ride and even watch.
  • 5 1
 eMTB XC .... . . . .. . . . . . . . . .
  • 11 2
 Get this to fuck! Gimps
  • 8 3
I'm still confused how a 65kg rider and a 80kg rider on an identical eBike is somehow balanced. The lighter rider is going to get a huge bonus in watt/kg over the heavier rider.
  • 8 10
No difference to a non eMTB race.......or any cycle race.
  • 7 0
@Starch-Anton: the difference is in the absolute measure of the e-bike motor. I believe the power that the motor delivers is the same across all racers, regardless of their weight.

It does seem like a bit of a silly category for the world championship level.
  • 2 2
its all a bit of fun, clearly no one actually takes it all that serious
  • 6 1
@Starch-Anton: Uh, it's very different. If both riders have identical watt/kilo on normal bikes, when they both climb aboard an eBike, the lighter rider is going to have a higher watt/kilo.
  • 5 0
@Jamminator: And the E-Jockey was born.
  • 7 0
Ridiculous !!! 50 min with a eMTB, what is the goal???
  • 25 4
 Probably to win
  • 3 0
The course was 47km’s long haha.
  • 7 1
You do have to question it a bit when there's a 40year age gap between the oldest and youngest competitors.
  • 7 1
What? Do they really award a rainbow jersey for this nonsense? That’s actually tragic.
  • 7 1
What bikes were Team USA riding? I want to avoid them.
  • 1 0
Nat Ross is on Specialized. Must have been something like a mechanical to finish 5 laps down, dude is legit racer with solid history so finishing DFL can't be due to lack of fitness/skill.
  • 6 2
Is this a joke? Event for those crying children who wanted to ride faster than their mates... And the mothers give them an e-bike so they can pretend they're world champions.
  • 8 4
Imagine being an e-bike "athlete" with a full ride sponsorship, full time training plan, etc. How could you live with yourself?
  • 6 0
My coach sent me a text for tomorrows interval training. Plug in bike until exhausted 2x, then rest for 5 minutes, plug in again 2x, then eat breakfast pastry.
  • 2 0
Not against ebikes at all, but not sure how this can be an even playing field with different ebikes having different power outputs, torques, and more varying weights. However it is a skill to climb with an ebike in really rocky, rooty technical terrain with lots of tight switchbacks. I find it much, much, easier to climb that kind of rough technical terrain on a regular bike because the balance and traction is more predictable. However, for just regular climbs and steep climbs that are not super technical, ebikes really shine.
  • 1 1
I think it's really just about the extra wattage afforded by the battery. Let teams do whatever they want with motors and electronics. If everyone is limited to the same extra watts, then it's an even field. How a team/rider chooses to use those extra watts is part of the challenge.
  • 5 0
If the bikes are juiced they should allow the athletes to juice too.
  • 3 0
The only ebike race I want to see is from the bottom to the top of the downhill course after the dh riders have had there way with it. Maybe they could even race up then down
  • 6 1
I had to check it wasn't April 1st
  • 4 0
They might as well make it the mullet ebike world championships of gravel…….
  • 4 0
David Harrison, DOB 1964. Respect to that man!
  • 3 1
the goal of ebike racing is to promote the company with th best motor and battery. why we don’t see the brand
  • 2 0
And afterward, partied so hard they set their rooms on fire, while team manager was out to dinner
  • 2 0
How are the N American rides near the bottom? I thought their speed limit was higher than Europe
  • 1 0
Supposedly they have used E-Bikes in XC, Cross, and Road Racing for Decades, only that no one knew they were E-Bikes. I am happy to see they made an Official Class Now LOL.
  • 1 1
all the haters here never ridden a proper ebike on a difficult terrain. ebikes are not only for fatties going uphill on fire road, you can actually ride them hard and fitness plays a huge role in that.
  • 1 0
Do they get points for passing proper bikes. And how do you get lapped on an ebike
  • 3 2
Who could possibly care about watching a bunch of Aholes race motorcycles around a mountain bike course
  • 1 0
that is a huge joke!!! haahahahahah Without any kind of disrespect to the athletes.....
