Enduro Bikes Galore, Including a Prototype GT - EWS Chile 2018

New prototype GT trail bike under Martin Maes
We've grown accustomed to seeing Martin Maes riding an aluminum GT Sanction, but this year he's starting things off aboard an unnamed prototype with a carbon front triangle and aluminum swingarm. The 27.5"-wheeled bike uses a familiar-looking Horst link suspension layout, and has a flip chip on the lower shock mount to adjust the geometry. Oh, and there's room for a water bottle.

Red is the new black, at least when it comes to the latest RockShox Lyrik RC2, like this one on the front of Damian Oton's Devinci Spartan.

There's a Maxxis Shorty up front to help deal with the loose, powdery soil.
Little details for Damien Oton.
Oton has the name and birth date of his daughter inscribed on the rocker link.

Cecile's running 23 psi in the front and 25 psi in the rear in her Hutchinson Toro tires.

EWS Chile 2018
Katy Winton's ready to rock and roll aboard her fresh Trek Slash.

EWS Chile 2018
There are two tokens and around 60 psi in that Lyrik, although Katy said that since the fork is so new they're still working on figuring out the ideal settings.
EWS Chile 2018
The Thru-Shaft shock is inflated to 128 psi.

Take a look at that custom Garmin mount - it's held in place using the bolt for Trek's Knock Block system. There's also a OneUp tool hidden in the fork steerer.
EWS Chile 2018
Bontrager SE5 tires have been set up with Flat Tire Defender inserts front and rear. The front tire is a prototype with slightly softer side knobs for extra grip.

EWS Chile 2018
Cody Kelley's on a new team this year, and will be racing the 27.5" Alchemy Arktos. The bike has 152mm of rear travel, and it's equipped with a 170mm Fox 36

Those XT brake levers are attached to Shimano's most powerful Saint calipers.
EWS Chile 2018
OneUp has a strong presence on the EWS circuit - their EDC tool seems to be everywhere.

EWS Chile 2018
At roughly 165 pounds, Cody's running 90 psi in his fork, and 197 psi in the Fox Float DPX2. His Maxxis tires, a 2.5" DHF and a 2.3" DHR II, are set at 25 and 29 psi respectively.

Gt is finally getting their sh*t together
  • + 14
haha exactly what i was thinking
  • + 59
 Finally, the death of i-drive
  • + 15
So if I trim the side knobs on just one side of a Maxxis Shorty would I be enduroAF?
  • - 1
Great looking bike for sure! Never liked the Sanction, although the Force is quite nice.
  • + 7
@WasatchEnduro: that is f*cking weird, great catch!
  • + 6
 @WasatchEnduro:
Yeah wait what?!
  • + 5
Good to finally see GT using "KISS" Keep It Simple Stupid! A simple bike that will work and be very well priced.
  • + 12
@WasatchEnduro: Good eye, I hope someone ends up getting answer for this.....
A. There are some crazy lose off camber lines that extra side spikes will help with.
B. There is some weird hard pack off camber section where tall spikes would squirm.
C. Had to trim the knobs on one side to fit my cousins homade wheel offset set up last week, and somehow I forgot that my Shorty got F'd.
D. Hey the Pink Bike dude is doing bike checks, let's F with the world!
  • + 7
@JDFF: E. Nascar and you're only turning left, brah
  • - 3
No 'looks like a session' comments??
  • + 4
It'll be interesting to see what GT marketing department has to say about abandoning a design concept they have been plugging for the best part of 20 years
  • + 2
@Primoz: More like Evil this time

flag blackforest (Mar 23, 2018 at 0:03) (Below Threshold)
But It will be hard to sell a bike that looks exactly like a Kona, Trek, ............. Especially for the totally overpriced GT-Price
  • + 2
@Primoz: more of a "looks like a slash" crowd here
  • - 1
@joehowlett55: yeah what are they calling it, the GT Session or GT Process?
  • + 0
@Primoz: Looks like Mega with Enduro-Slash linkage hybrid. Me gusta.
  • + 3
Looks like a con-Session to modern enduro bike designs.
  • + 3
@jollyXroger: when did honey G start riding for commencal
  • + 1
@chunter: and the Dirty dan is cut as well, even cuts though ; ) on the rear of Martin Maes bike
  • - 2
 @Lurch-ECD:
say Hi to my little friend...FSR...
  • + 5
going back to the 90's , horst link like GT LTS and STS. worked and sold so well that specialized didn't renew the agreement with GT about the use of that patent.
  • + 2
@blackforest: Have you priced a Trek lately?
  • + 1
@pakleni: a WHAT?? Which part of it looks like an Evil?

@joehowlett55: point, messed this one up. I accept all the negative votes.

@jollyXroger: um, the Mega has a horizontal shock orientation... More or less same for the Enduro. It is Slash like though

@bman33: or any bike, that is not direct sales, really. Even more so if it's carbon or they try to be a special brand or something. The prices are literally insane.
  • + 2
Why can't we see a full picture of it though?
  • + 0
@Lurch-ECD: the IDrive is quite good... the bushings on IDrives have been the issue (all they needed to do was build it better)
  • + 74
 I'm over red forks already.
  • + 5
ya, not into these red forks at all
  • + 32
Red forks? Who's the cute girl on the Alchemy bike?
  • + 4
I’m not over orange fox stuff. I want it as badly as I wanted white Marzocchi stuff in 2006. X-clusiiiive
  • + 7
You've red too much into it already
  • + 9
@WAKIdesigns: They should have kept the Orange for only the series leaders like when they released it, that would have made it more X-clusiiiive
  • + 5
@SonofBovril: it's still X-clusiiiive. Tells the big shots from the peasants. Creates the tension at the trail center or in the lift queue. Love this tension. The resentment, the jelaousy, "NOT - WORTHY!", "Thy does not deserve!" "I bet you suck!" "you fkng loser, waaaaanker!, you would not be able to use '99 RS Judy to it's full potential and you wave your orange Fox here!"

Oh I love how it brings up the monkey brain to the surface and they dance like a moth caught in a spider web (laughs histerically)
  • + 7
I was over boring af matte black 5 years ago, but I'd take popping colours over dull shades any day
  • + 5
@applepie: as an architect, seeing the pretentious "all black" dresscodes around, I find murdered out black bike builds for 10k to be simply a conflict of surplus of funds over deficit of creativity. Luckily we are done with black out + fluoro green details builds, often accompanied with monster energy logos. DVO made them last a tiny bit longer, but they a rarity. COLOR!
  • + 1
@Rhymer: They had to do something radically different externally since the main internal change they made was copying the Vorsprung upgrade.

Sram will sell more forks this way because the fanboys with black lyrics will feel outdated and want the color the pros have.
  • + 2
Seriously, first the orange fox and now this?? Won't buy either purely because of the color.
  • + 2
@WAKIdesigns: f*ck that! I still keep it blacked out! Decals off shocks and wheels... Creativity is showcased with how you ride on the trail! I'm not sponsored and the billboard look is way overrated! It's just the way it has to be!
  • + 2
@Flowcheckers: The thing is tho black will never feel outdated! It's the red of that new lyrik that will feel so by next year when the pros are on the next new color! Black always just works.
  • + 0
@HARv379: Haha I hear Ya! Once u go black u don't go back!
  • + 1
@bohns1: you better tell me how much caloric deficit you dared to go for. I’m now doing around -500 and still see progress with lifting, so muscles are growing. Read somewhere that -750 is the sht to go under 15% body fat. I’m at 15-17% ATM and my goal is to be around 12. 75kg at 178cm now, aiming at 72kg.
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: Not in a deficit right now! My job and workout schedule seems to keep me lean and I'm taking in around 3600cal.. I have a naturally fast metabolism tho.. I usually drop down in about a month from now! The mirror is my gauge! If I Indulge in beers I eat less that day..
  • + 1
@bohns1: I’m working in the office so my base is around 2000. Indo heavy lifitng and then sprints and cold showers so I think I bump metabolism quite well to compensate for deficit. Did you find some good tables for how much gym training burns? A gym rat I know says it’s about 600 per hour of good circuit work out, so do some sources I found online but I’d love to find something more concrete.
  • + 40
That Alchemy looks 4 years old.
  • + 2
 Looks like an Ibis
  • + 3
 @sean9002: I don’t see it? Which one?
  • + 1
 SB-76 carbon
  • + 8
It’s bloody horrible. You know it’s bad when a modern GT is better looking.
  • + 1
The suspension is similar to Yeti's ? It's not patented ?
  • + 1
 The rider doesn't seem stoked.
  • + 1
Looks way too short, practically a mokey bike!
  • + 3
his rider would pass me going down like a 4 yo
  • + 2
Geometry looks steep. Maybe an illusion.
  • + 3
That Arktos looks dated; maybe by mid-season they'll get something updated
  • + 1
A bit Nomad 3-ish, but still like the bike.
  • + 1
@Whipperman: The guy who invented it also did the Arktos. David Earle?
  • + 1
@Whipperman: It's a situation similar to that of Marin Wolf Ridge and Polygon XQUARE One. Same linkage, different bike, different brand.
  • + 19
Is it just me, or does it look like Cody Kelley is riding a kids bike
  • + 10
yep what an odd looking bike. looks like it somehow lost 4"'s of wheelbase!
  • + 5
That high standover doesn't help with its visual balance. Needs a bottle mount inside that triangle given they freed up so much room for one.
  • + 13
dear gt your old bikes looked like crap.... now they are some of the nicest looking bikes as well i may have to try one
  • + 10
I don't have a preference either way because I suck but I would like to hear Richie's opinions on the sb6 and sb5.5. Like why use one over the other and when do you change over. Does the course decide for you or will we see you ride the 5.5 more often?
  • + 1
I feel like maybe he likes the sb6. But yeti just said for marketing reasons everyone has to ride the sb5.5? Either way hes probably still good on it.
  • + 2
@chillrider199: Richie will ride whichever bike he thinks will bring him to the top step. And besides, what difference does it make to Yeti on which bike sells better?
  • + 2
@Verbl-Kint: Focusing and producing on one frame in particular cost less. Easier marketing. Better build kits for less. 29ers are coming into the dh circuit so it makes it easier for them to focus and push the 29er.
  • + 13
Not breaking the embargo on the Ibis?
  • + 5
They also forgot to mention Damien's Spartan is a 29'er
  • + 1
 @wibblywobbly where is it?
  • + 1
Looking for that elusive first shot....
  • + 2
Seems like Bikerumor is the first to show something.
  • + 1
@Loamhuck: you will see it on Monday. nobody wants to jeoprodize their access to free bikes by breaking the embargo. (Also, how much money do you want to bet that the "review" will say it's the best bike ever....)

Bikerumor didn't get a bike to test so Ibis Marketing (who use to work at Bikerumor...) threw them a bone by giving them some carefully angled "spy shots". Methinks Ibis is nervous about how ugly it is....
  • + 4
If Richie has spent the off-season adapting to competitive riding on a 29er, I suspect 1 of 2 things is going to happen: He will totally dominate, OR, He will buckle a lot of rims.
  • + 3
Im seeing the new Michelin WILD ENDURO tires here in 29er!! waiting for them to release the damn things, only previously mentioned in 27.5 releasing soon
  • + 3
Am I going to be the first to bodge a grip shifter for my dropper post? I have no use for a lockout it it would be clean looking.
  • + 1
With the bolt on piggy back of Cecile's shock, I wonder if someone could do a clever reroute and put it on backwards to allow more water bottle clearance. The frame space up front isn't being used...
  • + 2
it's me or shimano is pushing their athletes into di2 since we know sram's plans on electronics??
  • + 2
So it is possible to change the oem shock with the regular one on that Genius!
  • + 2
yeah where is the 29er Ibis? Spy photos are out and they made me feel sooo grubby .
  • + 4
 what is the Cow riding?
  • + 23
 A Mooooondraker?
  • + 2
@slumgullion: Could be an udder bike.
  • + 3
Love these articles , keep them coming .
  • + 2
Why do guys run the Fox dpx2 shock over using the more downhill rated X2 shock? Wouldn’t they want the best??
  • + 1
 Curious about that as well
  • + 2
Formula fork adjusters look quite robust...I'm sure they'll never get broken off...
  • + 4
 Looks like a confession
  • + 1
One piece of info i would love to know: What offset are racers running in their forks?
  • + 2
need a ladder to get aboard that barn door, sorry, alchemy.
  • + 1
NOOO THE'RE GETTING RID OF THE OLD SHAPE OF THE GT SANCTIONS NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • + 1
Why do people do an XT or XTR lever with a saint caliper? what's the advantage?
  • + 1
Little better modulation, looks cooler, a bit lighter too.
  • + 2
That's the first GT I've liked.
  • + 1
Ravanell is so fast she has to wear an F1 driving suit instead of mtb gear...
  • + 1
Didn't think you could race prototypes on the EWS? Thought frame/bike had to be available to public
  • + 1
I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure that rule is in UCI and even then it's that the product has to be available withing 10(?) months of it being raced. EWS rules may be different but if they follow something similar then we can expect that prototype to be slated for production later this year Smile
  • + 1
@Lookinforit: just looked at the rule book, doesn't say anything regarding availability. Could've sworn I had heard that somewhere
  • + 1
@chunter: I guess we just have to hope then haha
  • + 1
@chunter: I remember there was something written about it in an article when the m29 came out
  • + 2
@Uhlrichl1: Yeah that UCI rules not EWS rules
  • + 1
@SonofBovril: oh ok, thanks for the clarification!
  • + 1
Katy's Slash would look sick in the team red frame colour with that red lyrik up front!
  • + 1
Finally a bike that seems to fit Remi.
  • + 1
I wonder why no one noticed Marco's new bike..
  • + 1
27.5 does not suit Cody Kelley!
  • + 0
Yeti turquoise and orange>>>>>> turquoise and yellow
  • + 1
 MOAR
  • - 1
Seems Trek is the only one without a piggyback rear shock (least oil).......
  • + 6
The main job of the piggy back is to contain an IFP or bladder which the through shaft shock used by Trek doesn't need. Oil volume will be pretty similar and heat should be less of a problem without a pressure vessel being cycled all the time.
  • + 4
 @JamesR2026: Photosynthesis.
