by Pinkbike Staff

CONTEST NOW CLOSED. The winner of the SRAM Code RSC Brakeset is Pinkbike user Ivan1234567 .
Congratulations Ivan1234567

Prize Details:
Day in, day out, this is the Eagle ecosystem at its best. GX Eagle combines the full-featured capability of Eagle technologies, in a group that realizes the potential within every build. This is where you’ll find the best aluminum MTB crankset we make. GX Eagle has its own version of our new, 520-percent range, 10-52t cassette, for more top end speed or a more comfortable climb—should you choose to run it. If not, GX Eagle is backwards compatible, making replacement parts at the ready. Like other Eagle groups, it gets its own group master colorway as part of our new Eagle Colorsystem, allowing for full group or fully curated builds. It’s the simplest, most trouble-free drivetrain system ever made, offering the freedom to mix and match with any component within the expanded Eagle ecosystem.

The prize pack includes:
• SRAM GX Eagle Boxset
• MSRP: $545 USD

 On the first day of Christmas pinkbike clickbaited me
For a groupset that is not as good as Shimano XT

 Isn't GX comparable to SLX anyway? XT is comparable to X01 and XTR to XX1. That was what I thought anyway. I can't comment on either GX or XT though, my bike has a 7 year old XT drivetrain which works brilliantly, with a Sunrace Cassette and KMC chain, but I haven't ridden SRAM in a long time, or the newer shimano stuf.

 @melonhead1145:
xtr= x01-xx1

xt=gx

slx≠nx

sx≠deore
  • 3 1
 @Noeserd: When PB did the Deore review they compared it directly to NX, and the weights and prices were similar...
  • 2 0
 @melonhead1145: that's their name to name and price to price comparison Smile
  • 14 14
 Shimano = Seized deraileur clutch. Sram's clutch is superior, along with that handy deraileur lockout button.
  • 3 0
 Xt? What are you talking about. Didn’t you hear? Shimano is canceling all other groups besides Deore. Since they dropped the bomb with 12 speed.
  • 4 4
 @Noeserd: it’s hard to compare because SRAM and shimano change different aspects that divide up groupsets

Shimano= weight, double down shift

Sram= weight, performance, quality, adjustable shift lever

IMO This is why shimano should be ruling the low end market, Deore is just exceptional, but when it comes to the high end stuff they are way more comparable and shimano is and has had its own problems with reliability. Races are being won on both brands and I know that neither xx1, xo1, nor xtr would hold me back (along with sx eagle lmao)

 @axleworthington: BURN THE HERETIC

(you only have to burn heretics when they make a good point)
  • 6 0
 @axleworthington: on my first Shimano 12sp set right now (SLX) and so far love the performance more than my previous GX.... but damn do I miss that little lockout button. Made wheel removal 1000x easier...
  • 3 3
 @WY228: How often do you remove/install your rear wheel that that is actually beneficial?
  • 3 0
 @m1dg3t: fairly often as I'm a frequent OCD bike washer, especially in the wetter months.
  • 1 0
 @m1dg3t:
In wet winter riding every couple days.
  • 13 0
 @bike-lair:

There is no high end and low end. Only Deore 12 speed. Resistance is futile.
  • 2 3
 @WY228: @sunringlerider: You guys pull wheels to wash your bikes? Seriously? If you're concerned with contaminating the rotor/s; the dollar store sells really fancy rotor covers called 'plastic plates' that do a marvelous job of keeping water/soap/lube/whatever off your rotors while not in use.
  • 2 0
 @sunringlerider: Deore really is hard to beat for value/performance. Even a deore groupset with the simple addition of an XT shifter would be more than sufficient for 95% of people I think.
  • 4 0
 @m1dg3t:
Yes I do. Actually if it’s really sloppy/gritty I pull my cassette and chain both. I have very sandy trails that are hell on drivetrains.
  • 1 0
 @m1dg3t: I don't do it for the rotors, it's just easier to clean with the wheels off. And I still use rotor covers when cleaning the wheels/cassette.
  • 2 2
 Only a Sram employee would downvote that...will be humming this all month. Funny as hell and true. 10 speed x9, 11 speed GX didn't like as much as the xt vesions. Haven't had the pleasure to own any eagle or the new 12 speed shimano but can only assume the same applies. Just something about the crisp shift of a shimano drivetrain.

How about some of the sponsors givng sewer-rat some love for his efforts. PB atleast some free merch....How about a tshirt with this years song on the back?
  • 1 0
 @m1dg3t: I think Levy hit the nail on the head in the Deore review, that the perfect setup is Deore Derailleur, Cassette, XT Shifter and SLX crank. Maybe XT Cassette to save a bit of weight. SLX cranks are a lot lighter than the Deore but very close to XT. The Derailleur and shifter weights are basically the same, the only weight difference comes from the cranks or the cassette. XT Shifter gets the multidown shift.

If I was to buy one as a whole groupset though I think I would go SLX.
  • 4 0
 Came here for this. Wasn't disappointed.
  • 1 0
 @melonhead1145: I agree but that was Mike Kazimer’s review
  • 1 0
 If adventX was in stock anywhere, I'd say thats the optimal drivetrain (plus SLX cranks). $160, and mine shifts very well. The shifter small paddle isn't the most ergonomic, but they have to walk a razors edge inbetween patents for that. The cassette, while pretty light, could use a tad more range, but its good enough.
  • 1 0
 @bike-lair: oh f*ck, I knew I should have checked!
  • 1 0
 @melonhead1145: slx cassette 10 dollars more and 55 grams lighter.
  • 1 0
 @hmstuna: true but I think you have to draw the line somewhere before you end up with an slx groupset
  • 1 0
 @hmstuna: on the other hand, maybe that’s a better deal than the cranks because if you go slx than you have to buy a chainring so it’s not just $10 difference, and that massive weight difference kazimer mentioned doesn’t take into account that the deore crank is weighed with a chainring and slx is not, as far as I know.
  • 1 0
 @bike-lair: if you're going to go full deore, I would argue 5100 is the way to go, no hyperglide but nice and cheap and still good range and shifting performance. Otherwise for 12 speed I think there are only a few builds that make sense.

Build 1, budget but good and not too heavy:
Slx cranks and cassette, xt shifter, deore chain and derailleur.

Build 2, weight concerns, but not too expensive:
Xt shifter, cranks with an aftermarket chainring, and derailleur, xtr cassette and chain.

Build 3 bling and weight:
Full xtr with aftermarket crankset, possibly axs derailleur and shifter, possibly some modifications to save weight - depends how much you like your warranty.
  • 4 0
 @Noeserd: you can’t physically make something as crap as sx so depressed is equal to nx ish
  • 3 0
 @bike-lair: basically what we've found out is its worth going for SLX over deore if you are worried about weight, as the cassette and crank are alot lighter. Basically my thoughts that SLX is the sweet spot, as XT is only marginally heavier, where the difference between deore and SLX is quite large.
  • 1 0
 Wait not depressed deore I meant
  • 2 0
 @melonhead1145: yes, but I really enjoy the double down shift on my xt group so I think slx+xt shifter is my sweet spot for price vs. performance vs. weight
  • 2 0
 @WY228: 1000 times? You must be related to the guy who invented that button. I think it is to removing rear wheels as the shoehorn is to slip on Vans.
  • 2 1
 @rcybak: no, just appreciate little details that make using a product easier. If it weren't for patent restrictions you can 100% bet Shimano would have put the same feature on their derailleurs.
  • 1 0
 @hmstuna: HAHA same never win, but ya gotta be in to win, well apparantly
  • 1 0
 @bike-lair: could not agree more. I really liked XO eagle, but some of the SX/NX stuff i have set up on the entry level bikes is truly terrible.
  • 1 0
 I Mean, You Gotta admit that a canyon strive isn't that bad of a bike.
  • 1 0
 @melonhead1145: I did hear that XTR Is Less Durable Than XT.

Probably False. Some Sram Employees Idea?
  • 1 0
 @d-a-n-c-e: XTR is the same as XT just lighter, I can't say its less durable but possibly. Should still be suitable for Enduro style riding so I don't think it's weak in any way.

 Since it's come up repeatedly and it's a legit question: what has been done/is there being done against people making several accounts to "hedge their bets"? Is there even anything you can do (maybe exclude any account younger than a month?) or is it all up to the decency of every one of us?
I don't know the extent of this problem or if it exists at all but people showing doubt about a pretty cool thing like this advent calendar is kind of sad (especially for advertisers, who pay for it), and possibly unnecessary.

Maybe it's too much to ask and there will always be those who shit on cool things but it would be nice to get this out of the way somehow and it's christmas time for pete's sake, when do we wish for impossible things if not now? Smile

 THIS PB!

 Nothing
  • 6 0
 @wowbagger quite simple advice to anyone considering that. Dont be a dick.
  • 2 1
 Why would Pinkbike have any interest in preventing that new user accounts are created on their site, which equals additional reach and therefore advertising money?
  • 3 0
 @FuzzyL: i'd argue that user accounts that are solely created for rigging an advent calendar giveaway and lie dormant for the rest of time don't contribute to reach, clicks, visiting duration or any other important metric enough to make a big enough impact on statistics that advertising money would suffer from banning them.
  • 1 0
 I’m not sure the possibility of cheating is really preventing many people from entering, it’s free and super easy.
  • 2 2
 @wowbagger: So now you tell me! And here I was all this time with my multiple accounts only up/down vote trolling everyone.
  • 1 0
 @wowbagger: Well, to participate in the give away, those accounts have to create additional clicks...
  • 5 0
 @danielstutt: Yeah.... That's worked so well with humans in the past.
  • 2 0
 wait are we talking about this actual giveaway or is this a metaphor for something bigger...???
  • 6 1
 How many tens of thousand of user accounts are on Pinkbike? How many tens of thousands of people enter these giveaways each day? How many thousands of accounts would you have to create to give yourself even a 10 percent chance of winning one of these prizes? The juice isn’t worth the squeeze. Three, five, ten, 20 extra accounts wouldn’t give you much of an edge statistically for winning. You’d be better off working extra part time for a little extra money to go out and buy this stuff.

  • 1 1
 @rosemarywheel: Well, I'm from the generation of technoloy so if something isn't cutting edge, its old. But I do agree with you on the N+1
  • 1 0
 @Jaib06 Cheers! I would assume you speak of technology like phones? do you think the website looks "Old"? I was just texting yesterday on my cellphone and it's the kind that takes multiple clicks to get to one letter and my boss said he found it amusing to listen to the sound of 2003 :Big Grin :
  • 1 2
 @rosemarywheel: NGL I had to google what you were on about on the multiple click phone, and wow. And yes. This website does look old, its forum is never updated and the buy and sell page looks like dog shite, the home page is bareable but look at some newer designs and it just look dog shit.
  • 1 0
 @Jaib06: I actually like the buy/sell page a lot. The lists of completes bikes, frames, suspension, controls, drivetrain, etcetera make it really easy to know where to look for people.

I do agree the forum section looks a bit messy, but I like the first page with all of the sections clearly labeled. Once I get down into each category there's lots of room to get lost, but really like PinkBike the way it is. So many websites these days (and Magazines are either too 'clean' looking or too flashy in my opinion.

By the way, I would also not be surprised if you haven't heard of the phone I use, I have never seen it anywhere but our house and my dads work. Tough as Hell, and you can drop it on concrete with no worries. Self defense tool in a pinch?

www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=3988
  • 2 0
 @Jaib06: Simplicity is underrated these days. I like the way this site is; no frills. Just bike content with a handful of useful posters and hundreds of a*sholes (pretty sure I am one of the latter).
  • 1 0
 @JSTootell: I agree with you on the simplicity but I like the simple look of say, Windows 10, the flat muted colours and simple shapes, I do think that PB could definitly look good with that colour set.
  • 2 0
 @rosemarywheel: I agree with you but see what I said to @JSTootell below, and by the way I looked at that phone and yes, that is a self defense weapon, clearly.
  • 6 0
 @mikelevy: I just wanted to say thank you for when you put on things like this and win it wednesdays and whatever other events where we get free stuff, I am pleased that the companys do not automatically send us junk mail and we have to click the little box to receive emails from the sponser. I appreciate the choice, as I am sure most companys would mercilessly send advertisments with no regard for our... inbox? anyway, I just noticed that it's always an option to click the square and it isn't one of the tricksyones that you must unclick to NOT receive emails. Cheers!
