Escaping the Hustle & Bustle of the City to Ride Bikes

Dec 28, 2019

Fabian Scholz and I wanted to start a project together for quite some time now. But with full-time jobs and busy calendars that wasn’t all too easy. This constant struggle of finding time and setting the right priorities eventually led to the idea for our story. We wanted to make it about the escape from the city, the break out from everyday life. And making time for ourselves, to enjoy riding bikes in the sun. The images do not need many words, so I'll just leave you with a quote from Fabian.

bigquotesSometimes I just need to break free. Escape the hustle and bustle of the city to slow down the pace. That doesn’t mean sitting still though. I like to leave work early from time to time, mount my bike onto my 1989 Audi Quattro and take the scenic route to some nice trails. That’s my way of escaping the city, freeing my mind and recharging my batteries.Fabian Scholz

The rider: Fabian Scholz is a former enduro mountain bike racer, national champion and currently lead engineer at Focus Bikes in Stuttgart, Germany. He has a hard time sitting still and is always part of some kind of action. Most of the time that involves two and four wheels.

The photographer: Axel Brunst is just a guy with a camera and the marketing manager of acros, the German manufacturer of everything headsets. When he’s not behind a desk, he sharpens his visual storytelling skills, which oftentimes involves riding bikes and all activities surrounding it.

Thanks for watching and make sure to escape the city from time to time!

one of the nicest cars ever made! i miss my urs6 20v with 5 cylinder. dream car would be a 200 20v...great cars from a great era.

I dont't want to crush the party, but i don't think it's a Quattro. This is a Coupe. However, it's condition is great!

 @Werratte: it’s a quattro! Typ85
  • 1 2
@kabaroo: Yes, that is the Quattro as i know it.
@kingofbike Didn't know, there are Quattros with that shape. Maybe, they attached the quattro-drive to the coupe too, just like any other model...
  • 4 0
@Werratte: this was the First with 5zyl and there was a Turbo version as well. The coupe was the first mass production 4 wheel car

 @kingofbike: glory days...
With kind regards, from Ingolstadt ;-)

@kingofbike: why don't chicken coupes have four doors?

Because then they would be chicken sedans.
SEDANS!

 STOP WHITE TYRES,PLEASE
  • 12 1
To our defense: it was a great fit to the retro feel of the story and car. :-)
  • 6 3
Really any tires but black. Tanwalls get a pass as long as the tread is black
  • 4 1
@axelbrunstphoto: that car never had white tyres neither had other cars of that era.

Pics are beautiful, so is the car, and the bikes are looking better than ever. I had the chance to test ride a Focus e-bike which was great (and eye-opening)

@vhdh666: Some bikes had white tires though, i.e. the Onza white Porcupine which I'm pretty sure this was a nod to, being Onza tires.
  • 3 0
I won’t ride them. But I sure love looking at them on other riders bikes!!
  • 1 0
@MillerReid: You may have a point. I still feel like trying them, the only downside being that they won't look as nice matched with other tires. And then again, if it's only at the rear it's out of sight while riding. It wouldn't distract me.

We used to avoid non-black tyres on BMX cos they wore quicker - is it still the case with these fancy boots?
  • 1 0
@Steventux: Yep. Not only do other colours wear faster, they also grip worse. www.renehersecycles.com/black-tread-only

White tyres are a pure expression of the Devil. VADE RETRO!!!!!

Holy shit, this article was way cooler than anything I expected to see on Pinkbike this morning. Rider, trails, bike, and of course the Quattro... Everything is on point. Awesome photography. We need more Axel Brunst.

This is what pinkbike needs more of... It's so rad!

Finally I understand where the Dropframe got it's design inspiration... a 80's car.

Cool! Was ist das denn für ein Dachträger (what is that kind of a fixture on top of the car for the bike?) Arbeitet das mit Saugnäpfen und oder ist das verschraubt (is this working by some kind of vacuum and or is it screwed?)

I know this sounds pretty negative, but I wish we all had cash coming out of our asses so we could afford nice bikes, cars that don't break down every other month, and money for petrol to get us out of the city so we can ride all these beautiful trails. Another story of haves and have-nots.

I'd be concerned about the bike falling off while managing full opposite lock and foot planted

I use a similar rack and it's been rock solid no matter how hard I drive. Drifting wouldn't exert too much lateral load either.
  • 1 0
@boozed: can you tell me more information about these kind of racks? i have a car that won't take a roof rack or a rear rack. edit: scrap that, tis a tree frog rack, i found it
  • 1 0
@tobiusmaximum: Mine's a Seasucker but they look very similar. I wasn't actually aware of the existence of Tree Frog until this article.

My only advice would probably to stay away from the cheap knockoffs like Rockbros. This is the kind of thing you want some confidence in!
  • 1 0
@boozed: i'm looking at the arrangement of the one in the article and what i am slightly bemused about is how you would fit two bikes side by side unless one had much longer/shorter forks than the other. surely the bars would get in the way.
  • 1 0
@tobiusmaximum: I can't speak for the Tree Frog but on the Seasucker, the fork mounts can each be rotated by about ±10°, so that the handlebars don't interfere with each other.

 Bikes and 80’s classic cars...perfect

It would be nice to know where those trails are?
  • 1 1
If Ihad to guess I'd say the new "Tscharlie Tschaplin" Trail from Bikepark Brandnertal but I could be wrong
  • 3 0
The trail is the jump trail in "Königsfeld im Schwarzwald". It's only 350m long, but packed with nice berms and fun jumps.

 @axelbrunstphoto: mode détail please :-)

Das ist aber ein interessanter Weg ausm Stuttgarter Kessel!

Always taking the scenic route. ;-)
  • 1 0
@axelbrunstphoto: The scenic and also the fun route with that car. The streets around Zavelstein are not too bad haha

This could be made into Biker's Cars series

 Which Focus model is that?
  • 3 0
It's a custom built 650B version of the Focus JAM with 160mm of travel up front.

@axelbrunstphoto: dude are you able to tell me what bike rack that is? edit: nevermind, i found it.
