It's winter. The Pacific Northwest is cold and rainy. You want to ride bikes and think that Utah might be the perfect destination. Winner, winner, chicken dinner. Head to the desert with Kyle Jameson and Stan Jorgensen for some dry trail and all-time adventure. Full Story Here!
Awesome video. Was supposed to be leaving snowy Alberta on a flight to Arizona tonight for a 10 day bike trip. However I broke my clavicle again, so had to bail on boys. So it kinda stung to watch this.
@cunning-linguist: this right here. this time of year is beautiful in az and you would have been just as satisfied holding up a bar somewhere with a nice patio.
I've never been to Utah or Arizona where the trails are dry, dusty and almost all rock terrain. Looks awesome and fun for sure but when it comes to traveling I always want to go where the trails are deep in the woods like BC Columbia. Maybe one day I'll make my way to Utah and hit MOAB.
Awesome video once again from Scott-Sports!
I rode in Canmore, Alberta this past fall, and I loved the dirt there! I do prefer those deep woods, myself. Of course if you lived in Utah, you're not far at all from Colorado and some deep woods, and high alpine riding.
@huntstyle: I do live in Utah and there is no point going to Colorado when we have park city in our own state... Also the drive to Jackson Hole is shorter than to Colorado
This is only southern Utah. Moab and St George (this video) are in the southern bit of the state and are all desert and rock, up north in SLC we have Park City which has beautiful forested riding.
As somebody who rides forested terrain in western Cnada most the time, I find the SW desert locations to be a perfect reprieve in the winter. Since moving here, there has not once been a year without riding in UT or AZ. They contrast our terrain so well, almost feels like a different planet. Beautiful locations
The Whole Enchilada in Moab starts in forested, Alpine terrain.
But riding in the dessert is pretty unique -- just a different experience. It's so rad, and so much fun. You won't regret it at all if you decide on one of your trips to hit Moab over BC.
As for Colorado over Utah... There are a lot of similarities between both states. We have the dessert stuff here in CO, and the alpine stuff, too. There are stretches in our city park that are very similar to what I've ridden in Moab -- just not miles and miles of it. Whether you pick one or the other, you'll have a good time. I will say this, though -- Moab is a step above and beyond what you you've ever ridden (if you've never been before). Truly world-class.
@huntstyle: Plenty of deepwoods stuff here in Utah around Salt Lake, it's just not rideable this time of year. The Wasatch Crest is an iconic trail you should look up if you ever make it out this way!
@MtbSince84: I remember the first time riding in Moab -- it's about 5, 5.5 hours from here. I got there thinking, "Is it really worth the trip just to go mountain biking? I can do this in my back yard."
@Tfatty: Oh yeah, it's definitely on my list! I just mentioned Colorado assuming you were in Moab, in which case it's only a couple hours away. And of course as pointed out above, Burro Pass is forest and right there.
@skijosh: Trust me, I didn't forget about Park City! I was thinking in terms of being in Moab, since Colorado is right there. I'm trying to move to that area for just that reason, a ton of variety in trails within a few hours' drive!
It's snowing/raining here in Vancouver, so mo(i)st of the the province is unrideable. Utah provides such a great winter getaway, especially in March, when you haven't seen the sun in 3 weeks, and it stays light until 6 or 7, and some of the higher trails are snow free. And it's dry, oh thank Dog, it's dry. If I was to live anywhere but BC, it would be Utah, in a heartbeat. They really complement each other nicely. Can't wait to go back. My tires last about 10X longer in BC, however...
Sweet edit - Gooseberry Mesa is simply amazing! Guiding a 5 day Western Spirit trip right on these trails March 26-30 = #primetime! Join us if you can get to St. George by the night of the 25th! westernspirit.com/WSC_GM.php
Thanks for posting this great clip of SW UT bliss. Only 12 more days and I will on these very trails (Grafton DH and Goose) to escape the cold, wet dank of the PacNW this time of year. Always good to experience contrast of riding terrain and the SW always delivers the goods!
Here in Northern Manitoba even going to Canmore to ski at sunshine is like a tropical holiday. I was in Utah skiing and biking for a week last winter, 2 days in Moab, it was great.
Been there multiple times and love it in southern Utah. Main word of advice though, bring your own beer and coffee! Mormons suck, everybody knows it, Colorado should annex Moab and surrounding areas.
Utah riding is fun. The riding scene is sweet. But winter air inversions are beyond horrible (northern ut). If you have a desk job the culture sucks because of Mormons. But hands down salt lake has the best proximity to the riding from the city. All places will have pros and cons. I lived there, socal, North Carolina andnow now moving to az. Life is an adventure

The answer: Yes, it is worth the trip. Totally.
