Etnies Release the Camber CL Clipless MTB Shoe

Feb 24, 2022
by Ed Spratt

Etnies has released its first clipless MTB shoe with the Camber CL.

The new Camber CL follows on from the brand's past Camber Crank and Semenuk flat pedal shoes, but this time it is an offering for riders looking to stay clipped in. For the soles, Etnies has used its Formula G rubber with a tread pattern that it claims has been specifically designed for clipless pedals.

Up top the Camber CL features an Exo-Shield upper that should be lightweight, breathable and offer some protection while out riding. Etnies has also paired a lace-up design with a velcro strap for an extra level of security.

The Etnies Camber CL is available now in many locations for $185.99, and will be available in Europe from March 2022. You can find out more here.

 @Lastpikd: hit me right in the nostalgia

 @Lastpikd: Osiris shoes looked cool but fell apart quick. I used to rock them with my Chad Muska boom box backpack back in the day on my Tom Green "roadkill" birdhouse deck.

 Nah clipless Soaps! Then you don't have to put pegs on your enduro bike to grind that rail in front of Hobby Lobby.

 When will companies actually start designing proper Clipless MTB shoes with good support, toe protection,insole with durable cushion that last with a flat out-sole moderate tread and lace covers; instead of these over cushioned slopestyle inspired skate shoes.? The closest on the market IMO is the Shimano AM-9. A Clipless shoe with features as the AM-9 but with looks and light weight similar to a Specialized 2FO DH clip shoe, would be a great welcome!

Lots and lots of goofy ass shoes being Mfg!

 And when will they give you the option to run your cleats further back to simulate the position of a flat pedal? Even the brands that claim to have done it still make me feel like I’m on tippy toes when clipped in. At least with the older Shimano shoes they had a nylon midsole so you could just dremmel the cleat slots further back.

 @CustardCountry: not sure how far back you want but I’ve been using the crank brother mallet boa and with the exception of the stock insole (but I have very flat feet) it has been the best shoe I think I’ve ever used. Mallet with a superfeet flex insole and totally comfortable with no slop or heel slip etc.

 I think you’re on your own there. These are obviously vastly superior looking shoes and that’s all that matters really doesn’t it?

 @thenotoriousmic: that was just the first shoe that came into my head tonight as there was an article about them earlier.

 Have a feeling these will be like the clipless vans. Every where for a brief time an then impossible to get but highly sought after.....
  • 4 1
 Clipless Vans had a major flaw. The cleat mounts were too far forward.
  • 6 0
 @calmWAKI: probably due to being desighned for BMX racing.
  • 5 1
 @naptime: Shoes with a background in BMX??!! Take my money!!!
  • 3 1
 @naptime: It will take loads of time to find any reliable science determining which cleat placement provides the most optimal power transfer. Looking at BMX racers they keep theor clearts in different positions.

We do know however that most road and XC shoes have cleat mounts sitting far ahead in the shoe, under the ball of the foot. Elite BMX racers use road racing, eventually XC racing shoes as they are the stiffest. We also know that majority of DH racers put their cleats as far back (midfoot) as it gets. finally dirt/street BMXers ride flats midfoot... so are we arguing that Vans tried to make an efficient shoe? No, they were just incompetent. So is anybody making shoes with cleats that are not mounted midfoot. Actually Shimano has their shoes with cleats furthest back from racy shoe types.

 So people using the shoes not for they're desighned purpose makes them incompetent?

 Where's Airwalk in this game?
  • 1 0
 That would be fkng cool! But here in the UK Airwalk is pretty much a sports direct (high street super discount sports shop) brand
  • 2 0
 @naptime: Airwalk Ones what a shoe!!! I've looked everywhere for another pair, few on eBay for £$£$
  • 3 0
 @chriss78: I had tree pairs 'back in day' awesome to skate in but, the soles lasted like a few weeks :'D

 The headline isn’t the shoe unfortunately it’s the price and that is just cashing in, boo Wendy Etniesburger….booo.

 Why, oh why do all clipless shoes get the ugly velcro strap?
  • 2 0
 Just waiting for the all white Czar’s to launch!!
  • 1 0
 I want this shoe but in Flat pedals mode. Plus ankle protection. Better looking than the Crank or the Semenuk. Truth.
  • 1 0
 That was wild. Cool shoes though.
  • 5 3
 BMX background. CHECK.
  • 3 2
 Pretty rad apart from the velcro remedial strap
  • 3 1
 The velcro strap is actually pretty nice to keep the laces from flapping and getting in the CR. At least they were on other shoes like the old 661 variety that looked like these.
  • 2 1
 @takeiteasyridehard: Exactly. I'd be unsure about buying shoes that didn't have that velcro strap.

 "is available now in many location" lollll

 Vans…. You’re lagging behind…. Bigtime.-

Back to the future..

 @willshw123:

Cool, but crap unless you liked riding on your toes.
  • 1 0
 @chriss78:

Please explain… I liked these. Sole was a bit too stiff but a good shoe for the rest, and not as ugly as 99.9% of all other mtb shoes.

Vans could easily do a proper working & good looking mtb shoe, but somehow they refuse.

 @DutchmanPhotos: The cleat slot was too far forward, especially for DH. Other than that they were iconic. I'm a big Vans fan ( I have a BMX background) & would love to see them make MTB specific flats & clips.
  • 1 0
 @chriss78:

Aaah, I get it..!!
I used 'em as flats. Looks like we share the same passion. I've been trying to reach out to Vans multiple times over Instagram etc. to push 'em a bit. I really like this latest Etnies shoe, but it would've been cooler if it said Vans on there, and even more cool if it was a flat pedal shoe, haha!
  • 1 0
 @DutchmanPhotos: They now do a bmx specific shoe that I sometimes use for mtb. The grip and fit is obviously excellent but there’s no support in the sole just like any other pair of vans if you care about that kind of thing. I quiet like being able to move my foot and being able to feel my pedals so it’s not a massive problem for me.

 @thenotoriousmic:

Yeah I have those too. The Cult ones. Feel pretty good for like riding smooth bike park jumps and stuff like that, but for more enduro style riding I'd prefer a bit more of an mtb shoe.
  • 1 0
 @DutchmanPhotos: I have the slip on one's. Love the feel, but not enough support or protection for MTB.
  • 1 0
 I'm joining the gang please VANS make some cool clips again.
  • 4 7
 Wildly uninspiring. So many mtbers scared to be seen in anything that doesn't look like it belongs in the skate shoe hay day
  • 14 1
 Never go full roadie......
  • 3 2
 @naptime: You don't have to go full roadie to make a shoe that doesn't look like a skate shoe
  • 2 1
 @NorCalNomad: never go full gravel...?
  • 3 1
 Hilarious watching mountain bikers being scared of wearing anything remotely stylish. These are clearly the best looking clipless shoes on the market right now.
  • 1 0
 @thenotoriousmic: funny thing is.. there's PLENTY of mtb shoes out there that are what norcalnomad describes. Just, They all look like special needs orphapedic shoes or over built running shoes......
  • 1 0
 @naptime: agreed and this is the only shoe that looks like this which works with clips. I get his logic though, he wants mountain biking to look as gimpy as possible to keep the numbers down at his local trails and prevent all these cool kids buying all the discounted parts. It’s a fantastic idea. I think tomorrow I’ll ride in a skin suit, bum bag, Hawaiian shirt or a flannel and pair of pit vipers to dissuade randoms for wanting to try mountain biking.
