First Look: Bergamont En-Core Prototype

May 29, 2015

Bergamont Encore
Eddie Masters is this excited about the new bike.

This 'En-Core' prototype from Bergamont will become the bigger brother to the Trailster reviewed earlier this year. The new bike has 27.5" wheels, 160mm travel up front, and 165mm at the rear. Roomy cockpits are present across the range, with a medium coming in with a 450mm reach, which is as long as many companies' large and even XL sizes. The head angle is 65 degrees, 75.3 at the seat tube and the chainstays are 430mm, numbers that are becoming more and more common for enduro race bikes. Expect to see team riders aboard samples at the next few rounds of the EWS.

The rubber grommets should keep things quiet and in the right place.

Bergamont Encore
The En-Core's linkage is longer than the Trailsters due to the additional travel, with a carbon link and chainstay in the pipeline as well.

Bergamont Encore
A Maxle keeps the back wheel locked down.
Bergamont Encore
The En-Core uses Bergamont's Coax Pivot System, which has the pivot located round the rear axle.

A flip chip is in place for geometry adjustment.

OK, this really does look like a Trek. Almost thought it had a full floater. That said, you now have my attention, Bergamont. How do I get one?!

 looks like a slash

Way better geo than trek, most notably reach and seat angle.
  • 12 7
How is that not a full floater?
  • 18 1
@cmkneeland - The lower portion of the shock is fixed to the seat tube, rather than attaching to the swingarm.

It doesn't look like a trek, devinci, norco, transition or ANY BIKE ON THE market at the moment. Oh wait, I had my contacts in backwards. It does look like every bike on the marker.
  • 3 0
True, they're all looking the same these days.
  • 6 1
People saying that this bike looks like a bunch of other bikes are missing the point.

Lots of TdF bikes look super similar. Lots of F1 cars look really similar. Lots of MotoGP bikes look very similar. You know why? Because they are designed for a very specific purpose.

These Enduro bikes are made to win the Enduro World Series. As such there is a specific set of traits that the bike needs in order to be able to compete at a high level in this Series. Hence, alot of the bikes end up looking the same. It is more news worthy, when a bike looks different, and still works well.

I've got a 2010 Bergamont Contrail 7 120mm trail bike that I got in NZ and have ridden to death. Everyones shocked by how bombproof it's been and how well it handles and I'd definitely buy another Bergamont. Bring on the reviews.

450 reach on a medium ?, thats crazy, i understand longer and roomier bikes often have better balance and handling but that seems excesive.
  • 7 2
agreed and with the 65 HA and 430 stays whats the wheelsbase on this 9 feet?????
  • 6 1
Strange that trek hasn't got anything to say about that pivot placement...
  • 9 1
They are not the only Split Pivot in town...
  • 23 4
US patents aren't valid in Europe... also you can't patent vague ideas in europe, only specific designs... a all-encompassing concentric axle pivot patent for example wouldn't pass muster... ie, you can't patent the very idea of an electronic lock but you could patent a specific design of an electronic lock. In the USA, if you pay the fees and get creative with the language they will essentially give patents for the obvious and already invented (they've granted patents in recent years for what essentially was "the wheel" and "fire") with little or no actual examination of what's claimed/described. They also don't really even search their own databases... if an applicant leaves out prior known art...(ie Trek knew about DW's similar contrentric axle-pivot patent application, but didn't tell the USPTO in their application so they still got a patent on their variation of it) then the USPTO won't look at it to see if it applies or not. That's also how Specialized & Fox got patents on inertia-valve shocks after they were already patented in the USA, by not telling the USPTO about them knowing it was already patented... and specialized damn well knew as they'd already signed an exclusive licensing agreement for the patented technology, which they never produced any examples of, because they knew they could end-run the inventor with a slight variation and not telling the USPTO about the original...

Meanwhile Fox can't do terralogic forks/shocks in anything except bicycles, because of the other guy's patent... which listed every wheeled vehicle class except bicycles... who's the other guy? Don Richardson... inventor of the full floating shock design... and who successfully SUED Suzuki when they stole his idea without paying him for using it. Don's shock company Ricor produces some of the best off-road racing shocks in the world.
