On route to the 2017 Fort William World Cup, the Scott-Velosolutions team (Brendog & Vigé) stopped in at the newly finished Velosolutions pump track in Edinburgh. Joined by friends Andrew Neethling, Olly Wilkins and Duncan Ferris the crew put the new asphalt pump track through its paces.

The Skelf Pump Track is Scotland's third Velosolutions pump track build and it sits in the city centre at the base of Arthur's Seat. Transforming the area, the track has proved hugely popular with the locals who got the chance to rip around the track with an all-star crew. Joined by Aspect Media and Sven Martin, the session went down hard. Check out what went down and how some of the best riders in the world across DH, 4x and Dirt Jumping tear up the Skelf Bike Park asphalt pump track in Edinburgh. Sven Martin was on hand to capture all the action - scroll down to see an amazing gallery of images

bigquotesThere are loads of lines and they all roll mega fast, it's getting your head around the fact that you're not going to fly out the top of the berm or off the side of the track. It's perfectly grippy with loads of flow.Olly Wilkins

For all of this crew, pump tracks played a major role in the early days of their riding and to this very day, the sessions go down just as hard. From cornering to jumping and manuals, a pump track provides the perfect playground to master these skills and these guys are testament that. One thing is for sure, the entire crew can't wait to get together again for another epic session.

I can't imagine the vision it takes to create something like that so that it actually works. With dirts, you can sculpt a little until you get it right. Here you only know it when the asphalt is there and you can't do anything anymore. Amazing achievement!

Well, there's dirt under there somewhere, so who's to say they didn't ride it pre-tarmac?

Is there any way of getting an idea of the build cost? Land aside, it would be much easier to approach councils if we could say: Watch this, this cost X.

Hey Darrell, Drop a mail to info@velosolutions.com and we will do our best to help

@claudiocaluori: Top marks for the Inverness one too Claudio, keep up the good work thumbs up>

Don't quote me but I've read in the region of 100 to 150k. A bargain actually, considering public constructions costs these days. The same area if it's for construction of a public car parking space and a few public space equipment will surely be more than double of that, and at least concrete/asphalt pumptracks will surely have very low maintenance costs, a big plus while pitching this projects.

Yeah I heard that my village was talking to iCycle (a subsidiary of Velosolutions) to also lay down a track so I was expecting asphalt and got all excited. Then the other day I heard that asphalt would be too expensive and they'd just use dirt. I don't get it. On dirt, you can only let us cyclists ride it (and you could just as well had us dig it). On asphalt, you'll also cater for skateboarders, in line skaters and whatnot. It is more money yes, but you cater for such a much bigger audience and it won't need as much maintenance. Hopefully they'll see this too and go for asphalt eventually.

 @vinay:
Look on the bright side, dirt will keep the swarms of scooter kids off it. I don't even bother with our local skate park any more, crowds of scooters have rendered it unusable.

@gibbon-on-an-orange: Yeah, but my idea was that on good days I'd be out on the MTB trails anyway. The asphalt pump track would be good for my BMX when the trails are so wet that riding them would cause damage. But if the pumptrack is dirt too, I'd better not ride that when wet.

@claudiocaluori: how much for one of these in my back yard?

 Brussels needs one !!!
  • + 1
Every capital of the world needs at least one of them!

Amazing to see this track come together, I can't wait to see and ride it back home in the burgh as an ex local. After years of hard work and public consultation, it really would have been nice to see someone tip the hat to the original team that put in the hard work to get it in front of Velosolutions, with hundreds and hundereds of hours upon hours of voluntary work and public consulatations and fundraising, which were never always succesful. A long road, with a fantastic end.

They need to make something like this in Belfast!

Don't know why they made 2 BMX race tracks in the city within a year or two of each other; merely a few miles apart! They are fun to ride, but a bit of variety would be great Smile

Brilliant facility Shame the local NIMBYs are being a pain in the arse about it
  • + 9
I'm probably preaching to the converted... You just need to turn public opinion against the NIMBYs and make them the minority. Keep the place tidy and clean - I've been to so many skate parks where there is rubbish all around the place. This just gives the NIMBY ammo. Keep the Local Authority and Law on your side. Show everyone the place has benefit to the community as a whole rather than a small handful of people. You are lucky you live in Scotland which is a bit more open minded than down in the South East.

Man, denver and the front range has so many amazing bike parks but damn an asphalt pump track would be so rad!

is the park free for everyone?
  • + 7
Yes it is. It's in a public space and you can just roll up. There's also a small single track loop that runs around on the of the edges of the pump track. A great facility that I'm very grateful for. There's a huge list of people who have put a huge amount of effort in to get it to this stage.

@samfr1000: well that's cool! they also built one in the Philippines, it was an indoor type pump track, but I guess they partnered with some businessmen so it's not for free. I wish @velosolutions would build a public park in the Philippines someday. Smile
  • + 2
@samfr1000: beats the South African version, super pricey to ride
  • + 1
Not fair. I see these things as public parks. Like outdoor skateparks. I don't think I could bring myself to pay to use one. I used to pay to ride indoor skateparks and I never had to justify that to myself. Odd.

@samfr1000: idea of fairness is a thief of ability to see the world the way it really works...
