Video: Fatbike Freeride in a Snowboard Park

Have you ever wanted to ride a bike down a ski hill? I know I have, for as long as I can remember. Well, this year, I was finally able to thanks to the crew at Alpine Valley Resort in Elkhorn, WI. They invited me out to ride their new terrain park and it did not disappoint! Riding perfectly groomed snow features was tons of fun but also very challenging. It was like nothing I had ever ridden, that's for sure. They are planning some fatbike races down the hill next winter, so keep an eye out for those if you want to join the fun.

This guy is a FREAKIN' G!

From personal experience - he makes it look easy. Fat bikes are weighted so different from summer bikes.

Clicked on this to watch how bad it would be. Turns out this guy can shred though.

Multi-time national moto-trials champ... He's been doing this stuff on fatties for years, glad he's getting some recognition! You should see him on a trials....or unicycle....

@rideitall-bmx-dh-road-unicycle: his skate park video was ridiculous.

I’d be stoked to ride the hill as well as his wife. Those rail slides...oh hell yeah!

And fatbikes just got a whole lot cooler.

Fatbike haters have moved on, just like the Ebike ones will.. lol

You need to out PAT'S name in capital letters - been watching this guy on YouTube for a couple years, any way you guys can edit the article name to give him this exposure?

PAT SMAGE - give him a follow on YouTube - he has a criminally low 8.5k followers
  • + 4
Agreed. I've been following him for a few years now and I'm always amazed at the lack of exposure I see of him in the mtb world.
  • + 1
Thanks for the shout out! My youtube channel is my name so I figured it would be easy to see, but I guess that doesn't show up here, whoops.

 Incredible skills

Pat Smage!! This guy is a motorcycle trials champ. That is amazing
  • + 6
Cheers, was wondering his background! Back wheel control for days, don't think I've ever seen someone manual so far so apparently effortlessly.
  • + 12
Holy shit that was amazing. Thanks for the dope drop outta the midwest!

This vídeo would have sold thousands of fat bikes a few years back. Amazing riding!
  • + 8
That was way cooler than expected.

Great riding and video. He makes it look so easy. Fat biking can run a whole range of riding form ski hills to urban, frozen lakes, to down tight twisty downhill trail through the tightly lined trees. The latter will get any mountain bike enthusiast smiling and wanting more. Of course you have to ride up in order to get the downhill. another 3 weeks or soo, and back to mountain biking.

PB, please put Pat Smage in the article title. insane that the a noto trials guy is doing this!
  • + 1
Thanks for the shout out! Pedaling is a great way to mix up the mototrials, and lots of skills transfer over making both more fun.
  • + 3
That was awesome. Fat bike haters get a glimpse of what you could do with fat bikes if the resorts allowed it OR we got permission to build it at a sledding hill Smile
  • + 1
Endless lines! We can keep dreaming...

Snow and bikes...what's not to love! Loved pretty much every second of that video.. I'm off to you tube to find more! and have a looksee into those Airoh trails lids, him and his family are rocking there.
  • + 1
Such a good combo! I love my Airoh and am just much more comfortable in it than the bicycle helmets I have tried.
  • + 1
Wonder how those spikes work on humans instead of features Wink

Actually seeing some ice motorcycle racing and they had a crash leaving a couple riders being taken to hospital - probably from the spikes. On those groomed slopes you would probably have decent enough traction without the spikes. Would only use them for regular frozen lake riding.

Still not interested in fat bikes though and laughed when he was pointing out riding up the slopes was tiring - going up un aided - always is.

The grip studs I am running are much less aggressive than ice racing screws. They would sure do some damage though! They probably only really helped on some of the icy lips and the quarter pipe, but glad I had them. An aggressive tire is probably more important. I hope the getting tired comment didn't come off like a complaint, I was more trying to point out that it was mellow enough to climb up easily and some of those moves took a lot of tries!
  • + 2
Wow thank you for all the positive comments everyone! Glad I could show another way to have fun on a bike, even if it happens to be "fat". Looking forward to more next winter!

Imagine cruising through the park early thinking your going to score fresh corduroy only to see a bunch of bike tracks hitting all the jumps and some dude doing manuals down the hill.
  • + 2
Haha I actually felt bad for a second, then it was too much fun to think that way. Nothing like putting first tracks on a fresh groom on skis, a board, or a bike! Surprisingly very few people even acted like it was strange to see and no one had problems so that was nice.
  • + 2
James Earl Jones and Morgan Freeman may need to watch their backs at narrating auditions! haha great to see this guy get some decent exposure, so good on anything two wheels! #smagicalstrong
  • + 1
Haha I always feel like I am so bad at narrating and talking in general, so I am trying to break that thought and force myself to do more. Thanks for watching!
  • + 3
This dude shreds! Really rides like a bmxer playing around at a skatepark. Mad skills, I bet that fat bike rides like a slug!
  • + 1
Thanks! It was a lot like a skatepark. A huge, downhill, snowy, little icy, very very white skatepark, haha. The Fatback Skookum is carbon and has light wheels (for a fatbike) so it can be thrown around pretty well.
  • + 3
Sick vid. Judging from your youtube channel you were the dude I saw last summer riding the red Ghost fully at Alpine Valley. Subbed!
  • + 1
Thanks! Yep that was me, looking forward to the trails opening up and getting back in the dirt out there. Won't be too long now hopefully.
  • + 5
 Rad!
  • + 1
Thanks Kirt, glad you liked it! Love your style, keep the cool videos coming!
  • + 3
I believe these guys were the moto trials family that was on AGT a few years ago. Crazy skills!!
  • + 1
Yeah that was us, time flies. Thanks!
  • + 5
 dude really shreds
  • + 3
Throwing a fat bike like it's a bmx, he got some serious strength an skills there. Are those studded tires he uses?
  • + 1
Thanks! I have grip studs in the tires, which definitely helped on some of the icy lips, decks, and quarter pipe. You could still have fun without them but they are nice to have!
  • + 3
SMAGE!! I just made the connection when I saw Phil!! Legends on trials bikes!! Check out Phil Smages story if you havent!

Two of my favorite IG accounts! Those brothers are inspiring in many different ways.

 what bike/tire set up
looks like so much fun
  • + 1
It is a Fatback Skookum with Manitou Mastodon and Bud/Lou tires with Grip Studs. If you are interested in the bike, use code "Skookum10%" for a deal! I love this bike, so much fun everywhere.
  • + 3
 That was dope
  • + 2
 Dammit...now I want a fat bike..lol

  • + 2
Sensational riding a tank like that
  • + 2
Thanks but its really not a tank, its a carbon Fatback Skookum, such a fun bike and not heavy in my opinion.
  • + 2
Great video. Did they let you ride the lift up?
  • + 1
Thanks! No, something about insurance... But they are planning on running shuttles for the race next year with some sort of snow machine to bring bikes back up.
  • + 2
Serious skills on the FATTY! CHEERS!!
