Appreciate there's a lot of privateers in the class, but 13th for Matthew Fairbrother is some going, can't imagine many put in the miles between rounds that he did. And fair play to the brands that helped him out - not a bad advert for durability!
@NZRalphy: monster effort. Check aleikostudio on Instagram, they're making a short docu on Matthew and two others. Shots they shared so far look great. Out November.
@Dogl0rd: there was no overall win in 2020, only 3 races due to the bloody virus: www.enduroworldseries.com/news/1497-changes-to-trophy-of-nations-and-championship-points- "There will be no individual EWS Championship title this season to ensure that those riders that can’t attend races aren’t left at a disadvantage. Instead, the victors of each round will be celebrated with a new custom Winners' Jersey, provided by Giro, to be awarded at each race. This new tradition will be continued throughout 2021 and beyond, with these elusive jerseys only available to those that make it on to the top step of the podium."
I really like enduro racing, in fact I like the whole concept better than DH racing. I like a lot of the racers from their videos etc, I like the bikes, but man....just find it so hard to follow and be engaged in like I am with DH. Wish they could show more of the runs. I don't really follow WRC for the same reason. Hard to feel as engaged when just seeing highlights after the race.
I feel the same, the race format unfortunately doesn't translate into something that would be easy to broadcast or be enjoyable for the average viewer. Maybe set up cameras at certain crux points where riders were puzzling over lines in practice, but I suspect the amount of effort needed to make it work is not something the EWS can justify. Downhill has short tracks so it's easier to show the majority of a rider's run but even then they usually cut out a good bit.
@daceto817: the most spectacular and factible way to broadcast and making engaging enduro racing is mass start format... or at least GC of the day inverse start where riders start according to the gap of current GC... so you can visualize the whole race in real time... and this is Gold when live... at least 1 stage should be mass strart or this format in my opinion... there was a race back in the days in France, they did that and film it in Helicopter and was super... don´t know why hasn´t been done more...
It can be broadcast in my opinion with just slight changes. I don't think anyone apart from hardcore fans would sit half a day to watch everything so it could be organised in a way where the start of the broadcast consists of the prologue stage on Sunday and then on Saturday a longer program with let's say one hour report from what have been happening on the morning stages of the day pointing out the outstanding performances or the crashes or mechanicals that have happened. Then the live broadcast from the top groups of women and men at the Q stage that would end the race.
Agree, tough format. Just one thing that could help that WRC does is "onboard footage". Since many riders are wearing their own gopros anyways, just have them wear production go pros and turn them in (or an SD card) at the end of the day. Then we'll get the crashes and mechanicals that influence the outcomes.
Congrats to Jesse, truly well earned! Only one American in men's top 40? Oooof... local enduro racing is popping, but doesn't seem to be translating on the international stage.
Next year, hopefully all the men stay healthy and we can have a knock out, drag out fight between Jess, Moi Moi, Rude and Martin Maes. Stacked field, very even.
I feel like the racing scene is better than Canada. The series are really well organized and attended. But yeah, not as many top pros ... yet. I'd say give it time.
After the WC DH season it is crazy to see only one French rider in the top ten for elite men.
Just as crazy that there is only one GBR in the top 20, both countries have great talent on a bike.
And props to Isabeau !!!! Mid season she had a season ender almost life ender foot puncture, yet she came back where she had left off and managed to win !!!!
The most beautiful woman on the circuit too !
You’ve got a point. Only 14 comments on this article, 2 on the highlight video which only has 9000 views after 12 hours. I don’t know why pinkbike even bother posting EWS news anymore.
Enduro bikes are like electric cars. Easy to sell, trending, makes sense to majority of people.
Still DH turns the MTB upside down, competitions bring bigger audience than anything else, while DH bike sales dropped.
Tell me how it is not like Electric car racing vs. Formula1 or WRC..
@tajtigabor: The competition format is almost identical in it format to WRC, more people amateur race WRC than formula 1, and formula e combined. Both enduro and WRC are single competitor points based off road events with transitions between stages. Formula one is full of whiney dicks who get paid way too much, NEITHER DH OR ENDURO riding relates to F1
@darkstar66: they both suffer from the difficulty to film it. DH, same as formula1 is all happening on one track for the whole event so it is easy to have multiple cameras spread across to film it all and give a good show to the people while not being to expensive to do so. Enduro and WRC never go twice on the same spot so the logistic is much more complex to shoot everything or it would cost way too much. Now the big difference is that WRC is an impressive show for the people, much more than F1 IMO. While Enduro is hard technically and physically, it doesn't show on camera, DH barely shows how nuts it is on camera so to the untrained eye Enduro looks lame so another reason why it is struggling.
@darkstar66: it's less popular because it's less fun to watch. DH you can watch the whole race, and for the top competitors, their whole run. EWS you just see snippets and highlights. For me, at least, it makes it harder to keep track of who's winning or even to really care about what's going on.
