I'm just stoked to see so many names in that top 10 for Elite mens who aren't usually even suspected top 20 contenders let alone top 10... Good job boys!

@tannerd: A long time coming? The guy is only 21. Gwin is going to break Minnaars record, then a few years after that Bruni is going to break Gwins.
  • 35 2
 @hamncheez:
I'll give you Gwin breaking Minnaar's record.
He's on pace. 16 wins. Bruni has one win.
And it took him a few years to get it. With the talent pool as deep as it is right now I don't see anyone coming close to Minnaar or Gwin for a long time.

Gwin will beat minnaar's 18 or whatever it is, and may even beat Minnaar's 21, but I doubt he'll beat Vohilloz's 26(?) is it?

@kubaner: Bro, Aaron is 28 years old, and Bruni is 21. I don't doubt Aaron will top greg's WC wins, but Bruni has a further 7 years on Gwin. And from these first two world cups, bruni has been the better/faster rider. He should have won at Lourdes, and now he's won in Cairns. Bring on the next world cup!!
  • 8 1
@Jack-McLovin: that is true, but look at what gwin has done, which is what you have to do to amass those kind of numbers. Winning multiple times a year for multiple years. Even Sam Hill and gee only have a few wins from much longer careers at the top. Steve Smith, only 3.

Sorry, about Nico. Sixteen world cup wins, ten world championships, but three were junior so they don't count. So he's riding high on 23
  • 2 1
@Jack-McLovin: Minnaar is 34 years old. If Aaron sticks with racing for a bit longer he probably easily could
  • 1 2
How doesnt the speed thing work because Mic Hannah had a high speed then all of them?!
  • 14 6
 HARRY BUUUUSSHHHHHHH!!!!!
  • 6 4
@kubaner: Look at Bruni's progression 2012, world junior champ,2013, the back up to Blekinslop, 2014, becomes Lappiere's main contender, 2015, qualifies first multiple times and is a a consistent podium, and wins world champs, 2016 qualifies first opening round , crashes in the final, wins round 2. The guy is going to be a superstar, and maybe even faster than Gwin!
  • 1 0
@SpinningAddiction: Highest speed at the speed trap, after the final tripple, from there he had to make up 1.5s, that he was slower else where on the course
  • 1 0
@spencer-m: better a mechanical than injury but still a bummer.
  • 3 12
flag jclnv (Apr 23, 2016 at 8:40) (Below Threshold)
@hamncheez: For Gwin to beat Minnaar's record he has to beat at least one guy who is clearly faster than him. And with Smith discovering his old form and Brosnan staying on his bike he's going to struggle.
  • 8 0
Did Gwin blow out around a half dozen spokes in the rock garden early?

Huge ping at the time and then the quick shot of his rear tire at the bottom looks like he's missing a few. Pretty loud ping at the spot where Warner said he cased too.

Out ridden today by Bruni, Troy and Mick anyway but post race analysis is quiet so far.
  • 7 16
flag jack-aldred (Apr 23, 2016 at 8:58) (Below Threshold)
@jclnv: Personally I think Gwin made a mistake leaving Specialized. Specialized can provide their riders with bloody wind tunnels and god knows what else, whether YT being fresh to the dh scene (and a relatively new company), Gwin is probably in charge of a lot of things he does.
And I think as well as being a good rider, you need to have a good team (much like football teams needing good managers) to piece it all together.
  • 4 2
@Jack-McLovin: Woulda, shoulda, coulda. Don't get me wrong, the dude is a beast but part of winning races is staying on your bike. How many times has he crashed in finals after qualifying first (or top 3, whatever) and after being on pace for the win in his finals run? Seems to happen to him quite a bit. If he can stay upright all the time he is going to win a lot of races.
  • 1 0
@hamncheez: in respect to the fact that Bruni was so close to winning a World Cup last year so many times.
  • 1 0
 @FatBoyFreeride: 15th @ 3.29.224 dude
  • 3 4
@Jack-McLovin: He wanted money over that advantage.
  • 1 1
@gally-nh: But he's a young, keen and pinned rider. Crashes will happen if you push your limits. And it's only by pushing your limits that you progress as a rider. You can either go down the hill at your own pace, and (in Loics case) secure a top 10/top5. Or he can pin it and go for the top step.
  • 3 5
@jclnv: Exactly. I've said that before on Pinkbike and got bombarded with neg props, but that doesn't mean it isn't true. Loic, Loris, and Finn apparently had teams offering more money than Specialized, but they chose Specialized regardless.
Sport shouldn't be about the money.
  • 8 0
@Jack-McLovin: Yes, I understand that. He crashes because he is so damn fast and is pushing the boundaries. But it always makes me chuckle when someone says "he should have won, he was the fastest" etc. But he didn't because he crashed and that is part of racing. Gwin won 2 weeks ago because he was fast, and stayed on the bike to finish his run. I can't take anything away from Gwin in that situation, and I can't say "well, Bruni woulda etc." It just doesn't work that way. He could be flying every single run for the rest of his career but crash every time because he's pushing it, and he probably wouldn't be regarded as one of the greats as far as hardware goes. Like I said, if he can figure out how to go insanely fast without crashing then he will win a TON of races. That much is clear.
  • 2 1
@gally-nh: A win is a win for sure, but until the crash, Bruni was the fastest man at Lourdes, and by 3 seconds at that. But, yes, Gwin was the fastest man to the bottom, and so therefore deserves the win.
I just hope Loic can keep it up.
  • 6 0
The key to a huge career is staying at the top and avoiding injuries. Plenty of riders can podium in a race or two, but they have to push to the ragged edge to do it and they end up getting hurt. Gwin has been remarkably injury free for someone who pushes fast enough to win. It seems like he can ride fast enough to get first riding comfortably within his limits far from the edge of injury.
  • 5 2
Sport should be about money because it's a job. A pat on the back doesn't pay your mortgage.
  • 7 0

flag jack-aldred (Apr 24, 2016 at 2:46) (Below Threshold)
 @jaame:
No it shouldn't. If you think Gwin was only just scraping by, then you're very misinformed. Last year, when he was with Specialized, he bought himself a 180K Porsche... Sport should be about people like Bruni, Ratboy etc. who are there because they damn well love what they're doing.
  • 1 2
@AllMountin: I'm not saying that, it's just an example of the facilities Specialized can provide their athletes. It's unquestionable that Bruni has come back a better rider.
  • 4 1
@Jack-McLovin: If you want to be awesome you have to train all the time. It's a full time job. No one should work for free. Being world class is deserving of a world class salary.
  • 2 1
@jaame: I said nothing about wind tunnels.

However, telemetry, tires, training etc.
  • 1 0
 @FatBoyFreeride: 15 amazing result
  • 3 0
@jaame: I agree majority of DH racers' careers are a flash in the pan. There are a few exceptions Peaty/Minaar, but even Peaty has Royal Racing and Steel City Media and Minaar does training camps for young racers. Simply put these guys have a talent for a sport that's very prone to ending careers because of injuries, might as well make as much as you can while you can.
  • 1 1
@yeti951SD: If you're a top rider you'll never just disappear in a flash, not unless you want to. Look at Martyn Ashton, he had a potentially career ending accident and now he's inspiring even more cyclists across the globe. Rob Warner who know commentates. Can't remember her name, but the woman who after quitting last season (PomPom?) now works for the bike company she rode with. List goes on. They probably all do training camps, or at least will. I know Danny Hart does them, £100 per person, at his local. Always fully booked for months in advance as well.

Well Red Bull wouldn't do it, if it wasn't lucrative.
So only because I don't have to pay per view doesn't mean I have to like everything about that stream.
Red Bull has complete control over the image that fans get of the sport, just check what other videographers have to do and accept to be allowed to film a world cup.

And the new rule about Top 20 qualifiers being pushed out of the live stream for the overall Top 20 riders killed the race for me. It was so boring until the Top 10 (the top 5 had me jumping up and down on the couch like everyone else), because nobody came even close to Buttons time till then.
I they had just sown the Top 20 qualifiers it would've been much closer.
I had the same thought in Lourdes, the track looked cool, but no one came close to the hotseat until the very end.

Showing a rider who struggled in qualifying (and most likely the final) in the live stream is bad for his sponsors, Red Bull TV and the fans.

  • 2 1
28th at a world cup is still dam good
  • 4 3
 C*nts not farked!
  • 1 0
He took a long time to come back after his crash in 2010 (and the ones that followed). I hope he'll make a quicker comeback this time, if he has a come back at all!
  • 2 0
He reported he was sick with flu or something and still raced. With a pedaling section like that at the end, combined with a flu or cold, can't be fun. Probably lost a lot of time there since you won't have the strength or energy and you could easily drop 10-20 places just in that bottom split if you aren't cranking it. 28th isn't bad considering the factors playing a part. He's still a top 10 threat on any track, don't kid yourselves.
  • 2 0
@atrokz: I really, really hope so.
  • 12 1
That was some good racing! This track was such a mix of old and new, hope nobody runs away with the title this year I'd love to see 7 races with 7 different winners.
  • 4 0
I really didnt like this track last year. I thought it was odd to break up all the tech with the huge moto section. But now I see it for what it really is. These guys need to be on point through that tech just to save time. The accuracy with line choice was demonstrated today.
  • 15 2
Sad for Stevie. Chainsaw, the season's long and your time is coming.
  • 1 0
I missed the live stream, what happened to Stevie!? I was hoping for another podium!!
  • 5 0
 @Bikedude666: front flat
  • 1 0
At least he's #6 in the overall after the race. Still sucks but I expected him to be much lower than that. I bet it will still cost him a spot or 2 in the overall at the end of the season.
  • 1 0
@Gweggy: Ah what a bummer he was looking fast in qualifying too!
  • 13 2
This is probably the greatest comment section I've ever seen. And btw, Troy's little manual-to-hop right before the last triple was pure sex.
  • 9 0
Not sure if this was mentioned elsewhere, but Universal HD aired a show titled "UCI BMX World Championships" last night and it turned out to be coverage of the race in Lourdes. It's minimal coverage with the show only being 30 minutes, but still cool to see it on TV.
  • 12 0
So, anyone else having issues with RedBull TV on Roku?
  • 3 0
 Yep. Nothing.
  • 1 0
Yes. Had to go over to the PC
  • 5 0
RedBullTV app always fails on Roku. It never seems to automatically load unless you fast forward. Another problem is they only allocate two hours for the live feed, so once the time bar hits two hours, the video stream stops...and you miss the ending runs! And then you can't see the finish until they post the reupload several hours later! Frustrating.
  • 3 0
Works great on PS4. If you have one.
  • 9 0
I'm really happy for Bruni that he go his first win. But also really bummed for Troy. I know he really wanted to win here.
  • 9 0
Is Redbull's coverage of downhill WC actually live?
  • 6 0
It's live for the last 20 elite men
  • 5 0
@brusmaster: If I could give you more props, I would
  • 22 4
miss Freecaster, everyone said Redbull tv will be better it aint, its crap, no real Warner either, u got what u asked for muppets and its chite! Well done!
  • 8 2
It isn't live at all... the riders start in 3 minute gaps, so by the time the first rider crosses the finish, the next has already started
  • 3 3
 C*nts farked
  • 3 1
I love the Redbull coverage don't get me wrong... but whats up w/ the clap track in the finish area? I thought i was watching golf at times. Keep it real rb.

Bruni dropping F-bombs more than made up for it however.
  • 2 0
@ictus: I guess, apart from the start, what you see is still live though. There just is no coverage of a significant amount of the track. Just like in alpine racing. They would need a ridiculous amount of cameras to cover the whole track. Especially in dense rain forest.
  • 8 0
8pm here in California, off of work an hour ago and on my second drink and bout to enjoy a shot of Jameson. Let's do this!
  • 1 0
Off at 11pm here in CA.....jamo will be waiting. maybe catch the top 20 and then replay
  • 15 0
Wait to get off work before drinking whiskey? What is this? Prohibition?

Waiting for the live feed to start while prepping the bike for tomorrow's ride, Glenlivet in hand, because scotch makes fork rebuilds better.

Dang! Wyn Masters DNS. Get better Bru!
  • 1 0
 What happened to him?
  • 5 0
@ReverseKanga: He is still chilling out his concussion from Lourdes i think, props for him let it heal and be safe and sure about it.
  • 8 0
noooo stupid red bull having technical problems right at the good bit!!!!
  • 4 0
Redbull always freezes on the last 5-6 riders every race..
  • 9 1
Straya. Stoked for bruni. 4 Aussies in the top ten is the go
  • 4 0
I wanted to see the whoops section so bad.. Imho the camera angles weren't that great this time. Still great racing, everybody was biting their nails off Buttons time so close to each other and then Bruni comes with like 4 seconds off, amazing.
  • 2 0
Just sitting at Work and watch the livetiming! Btw its 8:25 am.

Pretty pumped for Josh Burton! I Think he did mit expect a Podium Today Big Grin

Well done Bruni and Troy had too much pressure i guess!
All in all i will see the Replay later to be as pumped as u guys were.
Cheers

The pace of World Cups has changed the last few years,Sam hill was a massive influence on these rippers coming through thus they are bound to get faster and faster.Sam hasn't died on the bike I hate hearing bs like that to be honest.Hill would leave most of the keyboard warriors on here for dead on a bike so to say he's not fast anymore is a full retarded statement. The faces always will change on the top step at these things time people got used to it.Sams still fast and I wouldn't be surprised if we get another top step from him at some point. On a positive note that was some wicked racing roll on the next one,
  • 6 1
Tahnee got over 20 seconds faster than her qualifying run.... good god
  • 10 0

 More racing less lifestyle

live.tissottiming.com/?id=00030D01&style=Tissot

Can already skip the first hour of Redbull now that we know Rach thrashed 'em.
  • 5 0
 Stupid placement of split times..
  • 7 2
 AAAAAAND Bruni came..Smile aha
  • 6 1
Protour must be rolling in his grave... 1 and 2 sucka.
  • 9 1
When you have two Spesh bikes on podium half of Pinkbike gets bummed. Protour was only the Ambassador of ASS, Anti Specialized Squad Smile
  • 5 1
yea, three of the top 7 on Demo's it's hard to argue their superiority ! WOW
  • 3 1
@MX298 it is such a Peaty that such immoral company as Specialized was allowed to innfiltrate so deep into our decent sport.
  • 2 0
In Kauai, HI and it's still early Friday night! What a great line up on the podium. Bruni broke his cherry, Troy the fastest smiliest gentleman around and Sik Mik right back in there.
  • 2 0
Damn! I missed the race and accidentally saw the results. I'm happy for Loic, he must be stoked. Also, It's good to see a few names I've never seen in the top 10....and looks like a few privateers too.
  • 3 0
Elite men is very competitive however, Rachel absolutely dominates the sport. She will go down as one of the greatest of all time.
  • 4 1
I know it's sweet for Bruno to get his first WC win, but congrats to Josh Button on 5th place he was working a real job and got a call to come race just a few weeks ago.
  • 3 1
Somebody farts in some enduro race in a country nobody's even heard of, boom 10 articles, million photos. Then, there's the WC and you get few sheets with results...

What happened to Peaty? Button is replacing Crimmins?
  • 1 0
Man how does a guy with an average finish of 27 or so get ahead in the points standings of a guy with an average finish of 10th? It really is a game of get on the podium or go home. Fair I guess but it must piss some people off.
  • 1 0
I am curious why Gwin was struggling at the top all weekend. Horrible first splits in practice, qualifying and finals. He always made up a huge chunk of it, but never the whole thing. Glad for Bruni though. Seems like a genuinely nice guy whose really been pushing himself. He earned it!
  • 2 0
Nothing he did was horrible. He was right up at the top, there's just some other racers who are also at the top of their game. His domination isn't the same anymore, it happens. Nothing he did was horrible. He got 4th.
  • 5 1
Anyone know why finn is not starting?
  • 9 1
He went down hard yesterday and opted to sit out of the race today
  • 4 1
Just checked his Instagram looks like he had a crash in the rock garden and it got the best of him. He should be good for the next one.
  • 2 0
@hadenmtnbiker: that rock garden is savage
  • 8 0
@fat-boyfat: that rock garden has no chill.
  • 1 1
might of got injured when he crashed out in qualy.
  • 2 0
@FidelCashFlow: didn't he say he was algood from that crash in the vital slide show
  • 2 0
so Cairn is actually a good DH track ..aye?
  • 1 0
@johnl2: I just saw his instagram post, I'm not too sure what he's said since then
  • 2 0
I was at the race and saw a cast or bandage on his arm. So I'm guessing the injuried arm was why.
  • 4 0
5:35 am in Germany - Is ths really happening?
  • 1 0
i guess you stood up one hour to early! :-D
  • 9 0
Cry me a river! All World Cup season us Southern Hemisphere folk have to deal with abnormal streaming times, you have it pretty good the rest of the year!
  • 4 0
I wasn't complaining... I've just come home and was surprised about the timing, haha!
Since when are you southerners so edgy?
  • 2 0
@mazze: Sorry mate. I'm just so pumped from Bruni's first World Cup win!!!
  • 5 1
I'd rather listen to Morgan Freeman narrate porn.
  • 14 11
Mark Cavendish could have won here, the last section is painful to watch here.
  • 35 1
Mark Cavendish would have had to have been scraped off the first rock garden.
  • 12 0
@ReverseKanga: What, he'd make as far as the rock garden?
  • 8 2
Maybe not cavendish. But Peter Sagan would probably make it into the top 10.
  • 2 1
Yes, but imagine if he was on a downhill bike! game changer.
  • 2 1
@Rollbretttreter: Lance Armstrong would of made it. He's actually really good on a MTB. Think of the rock gardens you can clear on a 'roid rage.
  • 1 0
Anyone know why some riders have helmet cams? I thought the UCI kiboshed them. Rachel, Rat and Mik had one. I think I saw a few in Lourdes as well but never actually seen the race run footage.
  • 1 0
 No kibosh. They're allowed.
  • 2 0
I think they have to be mounted on the visor to be allowed.
  • 5 1
Well done mr bruni.well done indeed.
  • 3 0
Fearon was on his way to the hot seat and a top 5 finish but he slipped off his pedal on the final sprint
  • 2 2
Just my two cents worth; is it feasible to allow a a top ten rider who punctures (Stevie Smith in this case), to re-run the course after the the no.1 qualifier?? A man travels from Canada to Australia and gets a flat and it's game over...c'mon! It would add a little spice to proceedings! BTW... What happened to Ratboy & where was Gee?
  • 5 1
 Hold that first nik!
  • 1 1
 Yeeeww!!
  • 1 0
 Big gulps hey
  • 4 0

  • 4 0
He got a flat front tire...
  • 1 0
 front flat tire
  • 2 0
Ah, gotcha....shame. How do you guys figure this stuff out? Does the live stream show more than just the 20 riders in the recap?
  • 1 0
@rory: He was in the top 20, so we got to see his run and the replays of what happened
  • 1 0
@rory: yep seems so, at least some bits and gems from other riders? But Steve started as the fifth lastet, so it's definitely in the recap.
  • 1 0
Must've just been a bad connection on my end...the feed kept cutting out around that time. I assumed it was part of the recording, but guess not. Cheers!
  • 1 0
Mega result for Mik! If that beast is gonna be on form this year, he's gonna be a contender at at least a few stops for sure!! Choked for Stevie...
  • 2 0
40 days until the next one. Get your shit together UCI. (I know that's not possible)
  • 1 0
Being from SoCal, it really looked like Gwin was suffering in the humidity and heat, He looked completely gassed which isnt something you would expect from him.
  • 3 0
who the fuck names their kid Harry Bush........give your head a shake.
  • 1 0
stoked for Bruni. this win was great! coming into his prime.
careers at or near the top are short in most sports. pay the
man/woman what they're worth!
  • 4 1
 When's the live stream?
  • 8 1
 9:30pm PST
  • 4 6
When it's over. RedBull sucks. They have not enough $ to buy an alarm to be on time to good transmitters..
Not that i drink their poison anyways..
  • 2 1
OMG It's actually LIVE now ! miracle !
  • 2 1
just kidding, it's a delayed 'Live". LOL
  • 1 0
@SchredLikeTrah: have you watched any of the races in the last 5 years? the women have never been live. the men have always been live. you'll get it in a few years Wink
  • 5 2
4.30pm here drunk too Big Grin
  • 9 8
Rachel Atherton is a good rider and racer but is anyone else over her winning all the time?
  • 27 0
You should have a word with the other girls and tell them to step it up.
  • 5 0
Yeah, Rogot was the only one that could keep up.... Surely the Canadian girls that ride Whistler every other week could step up their race game
  • 1 0
@catweasel: for real! it is clearly possible, where are the other rachels?
  • 4 3
Bruni rode it like he stole- straight from Gwin! Still hot off the autoclave! Ahahaha!
  • 2 0
It was worth waking up early today, nice race! Bruniiiiiiiii!

  • 1 0
Am I the only one wondering whether we'll see Sam Hill on the podium ever again...?
  • 1 0
Hope so, he's a local legend in Aus, i just don't think he's spent long enough on the DH bike over the summer. just no elevation in Perth...
  • 1 0
 @steinbex: He's a legend everywhere Big Grin
  • 1 1
I'm confused, how is this Brunis first WC win? How did he become champion last season without winning any races? (I started following WC DH at the end of last season)
  • 6 0
Because he won the World Championship. Gwin won the World Cup overall. 2 different things.
  • 1 0
My dad still gets very confused between the two, no matter how many times i try explaining it to him lol
  • 1 0
 @DrOzone: Ahhh Ok, thanks.
  • 1 0
Watched it live 12:30 - 2:30am. Had a projector set up in my bedroom... ????
  • 3 5
Stoked on the Bruni win, gutted for Gwin, he is potentially the fastest rider on whatever bike he rides but judging by the comments so far I can't help but feel slightly content that the Gwin/YT fans have maybe been a little humbled this weekend.

Another great weekend of racing!
  • 3 1
Any rider will be fast no matter what bike they're on. Yes, I am very happy that Bruni won. I had just had about enough of the Gwin/Yt fan boys chirping up when he wins, but soon piping down when he comes 4th lol.
  • 2 1
@Jack-McLovin: I know right, this is my sentiments exactly. Going to be a lot butt hurt people downvoting tonight.
  • 2 0
Gwin's mechanics screwed up ! I'm pretty sure I saw a chain on his bike.
  • 1 0
Style award for Masters. We just got to mention Brosnans incredible consistency
  • 4 3
Holy shit my picks for elite women were all correct
  • 3 2
 Me too
  • 8 3
@gooseman310: There are literally like 5 Women that you could possibly pick from. I'm all for equality but the field has been so narrow in the women elite for years its not even worth watching.
