It is theoretically possible that there are people who don't realize he rides exclusively on flats.....@VZLNMTB:

It's curious, in all disciplines now we have riders over 30 leading the series... Which means that spare time racers have much more motivation to continue until they 40 s.

I wonder why she doesn't race EWS full time. I wonder if that's her or Trek's decision?
  • 4 0
@SJSP: Fully agreed! Seeing her ride anything is pure joy! Seeing her on the podium just adds to it!
  • 7 0
@charmingbob: Her decision. She would like to stop competing and just film if she could.

 @panaphonic: oh, but it is!
  • 7 2
@bohns1: I don't think that anyone having a carbon frame or an alloy frame would change the results.
  • 2 1
@panaphonic: probably not.. I just like the ride characteristics of carbon.. I have both so I'm no alloy hater.

@Lagr1980: I said all season, he's been switching stuff too much, he should have stayed on the 6c from get go at the first Rd, it's just the bike that suits him and his style, pressure makes even champs do strange things, Graves has suffered from this since on Specialised, he's seemed to be able to pull it out for Alden but it suits the Stumpy and his style! You can fit square pegs in round holes!
  • 162 7
@Maverickdh00: totally man. you just call Richie and let him know your valuable thoughts. Its surprising he's been able to win anything without your expert knowledge. Does a flat have anything to do with him switching stuff? He flatted on the 6c as well.
I expect to see your new book, " Armchair Enduro Championing " hit shelves soon!!
  • 4 1
Rude flatted. It explains his time dropping dramatically in the last stage.
  • 4 2
 @Lagr1980: I agree.
  • 11 0
@Maverickdh00: or the puncture he got, cuz, ya know, he was leading yesterday
  • 3 0
what happened on stage 6 for Richie? But man a flat and crash in at least 3 stages. You can't win a race this way!
  • 4 0
 Hahaha!! YES! @jbob27:

I remember Peaty's words in 2007 after Chamerys greatest DH run ever where Sam (came third) but won the day and became legendary for all time!

Peaty! Sam Fricken Hill, give him the crown!

This is the one round I didn't think would suit him, his bike or flat pedals vs the engine power efficency of riders like Graves, Dailey, Lau Callanhan etc, what a champ to win here, is an incredible feat!

Wow!
And congrats Sam Hill.

Sam always does good in Colorado he likes the dirt!

Apparently Rude is doubling down on the Champion's Curse since he skipped it the first year. His Stage Results

S1 Clean

S2 Crash

S3 Crash

S4 Flat (at the top of a 5 minute stage!)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=xID_EWV_mGw

S5 Massive Crash

S6 Flat

It is incredible how tight the racing has become. Remember when they were winning races by 30+ seconds? Now the top 15 are separated by less than 1 minute and there was less than 1/2 second between 2nd and 3rd for most of the race.
  • 7 0
Yeah Jesse! Great result man! And Casey in 3rd! So proud to see Canadians up there. yew!

Happy for Sam Hill, bummer about Richie.

I saw there was a Richard Rude in the 40+ category, would that be Richie's dad? Also, Brian Lopes came in 2nd in the 40+ as well.

Just wondering, did Sam Hill ever flatted his tires? Could it be a smaller size guys put less stress on their tires thus minimising their puncture risks?

Or should pinkbike do a wheel check on all ews racers who never flatted before and see what are they running???

Flatted on an earlier stage today (not sure which one) and never got back into it. Maybe there was more damage than just the flat?
  • 2 0
Richie flatted? Pre race report was he was running DH casing with Cush Core.
  • 26 0
@dhrracer: Yeah but have you seen the guy
  • 8 4
@Mark-9: I understand he is a bigger stronger guy and flats happen but he had the lead and it is an endurance race maybe he needs to rethink line choices when you flat DH casing with Cush Core. I will say I have no knowledge of the details maybe 29er's were the problem. I want to see him do well but what else can he do.
  • 13 0
@Mark-9: yeah, he could probably flat a solid rubber tire.

I am always amazed at how pinkbikers never acknowledge the Scottish representation in the top twenty (and the rest of the feild) of men and women in ews. f*ck this flat pedal praise nonsense, mon the Scots!!

flag mfa81 (Jul 30, 2017 at 15:56) (Below Threshold)
Richie has crashed in at least 3 stages, and got a flat on stage 4. No way to win a race this way! Also he is riding the 3rd bike this year! WTF, 5, 6 and 5.5! This is not about winning races more like yeti wanting to show all their bikes are race worthy when they are actually not!
  • 10 0
@mfa81: Theyre not? Didn't Graves win on the 5c? Rude won on the 6c. and Cody has 9th and 13th finishes on the 5.5. You're right, none of their bikes are race worthy. Nice research mang.
  • 8 0
@mfa81: riders win races, not bikes.
  • 8 12
flag mfa81 (Jul 30, 2017 at 16:26) (Below Threshold)
@jbob27: Richie won 2 titles racing the sb6, should have continued racing the sb6 which is the best bike for him. I won't even bother mentioning Cody, first top 3th in a stage ever nice dude but gotta win something first... The 6 is clearly the best bike for racing and the one Richie is most used to, a lot of excuses because of rain and this and that in the early stages when the reason was most likely Richie racing on a bike he is not as used and familiar with as he is with the 6, a lot of experimentation and changes this year affected him! Don't get me wrong, not saying the 5 or 5.5 are bad bikes, great bikes but Richie should have stayed with what was working for him!
  • 4 3
@mfa81: I don't understand why Richie switched so many bikes. If he wanted more speed and stability and speed he should have switched to the large or extra large 6c from the medium. The guys 6ft tall and he rides a bike that would be large for a guy 5 4. The 6c is yetis only racy bike, it has longer stays then the 5.5c and with the 180 Richie runs on it it would destroy the entire ews field and he would be dominating like he was last year
  • 4 0
@mfa81: Rude lead day 1 by 8 seconds. I guess now that Graves isn't getting flats the internet needs to talk shit about something else.
  • 1 0
@mfa81: you're clueless. Third on a stage on the world platform isn't worth mentioning? Man you've got tough standards. The bikes aren't as relevant as you're proclaiming. Riders win or lose bike races, and circumstances. The bikes are a small piece of th puzzle. I'm sure Richie and his team discussed/tested and worked out all the details on which bike to ride. But obviously they've missed something, you should defiantly get a hold of them and let them know.

I like the guy too but he's had good results racing enduro after getting out of downhill racing because he wasn't getting any results at all. He had a few good years racing downhill and is off to a good start in enduro, hardly the greatest of all time.
  • 9 3
 What a douchey comment @mrgonzo:
  • 8 4
@tuumbaq: please prove me wrong. Is there another reason I don't know about for why he quit racing world cup downhill and his less than stellar results his last couple of seasons were just a coincidence? If you want douchey comments I've got a few in my repertoire but I'm speaking truth here. Congrats to Sam on this race and I hope he has many more good races but he's not the greatest of all time.
  • 13 1
@mrgonzo: He left because his skills suit the more raw nature of EWS tracks, and the limited track time means in EWS you have to be up to race pace basically your second time down the track.

He got bored of the same old short DH tracks where everyone is doing 6-10 laps a day everyday every year and everyone had the entire course memorized. The current DH tracks are one lined for the majority of the track and he can't ride Sam Hill lines that are 2-3m to the side of where everyone else is riding and do cheeky inside lines.

Go look at the VitalMTB raw vid from today. The chute every single rider rides the exact same line and stalls out in the corner, then the last clip is a very special rider riding a very special line...
  • 2 0
@WolfStoneD: I went and watched it. You sir are very much correct.

@mrgonzo: Yeh i guess being jnr world champ senior world champ and wc overall as well as redbull jindabine freeride champ
As well as getting close to taking out the ews series

Id like to know who else is close
  • 5 0
@WolfStoneD: the clip of the bermy S bends (can't remember where I saw it) in Millau last round was hilarious. Everyone else looking smooth carving round it, Sam just beast mode through the centre. Had me in stiches.
  • 1 0
@WolfStoneD: I agree about the line choice out of the feature corner...but man, Dailly floated through the section & carried silly speed.

I love how each rider seems to have a style...
  • 2 0
@WolfStoneD: I was marshalling a corner in Ireland and noticed an inside line and wondered why no riders were taking it. Literally none of them spotted it all day. Sam Hill went through on the same lines as everyone else...then 30seconds later who do I see walking back the trail to check it out? Sam Hill...the only pro or amateur rider in the entire day that spotted it.

Anyone who says he isn't special knows nothing about mountain bike racing.
  • 2 0
 @mrgonzo:
Sam Hill 2006/2007 changed the game. When Sam was on he was in a league of his own. Period.
A decade later he is leading the ews series beating all the young guns who are in the prime of their careers. If he isn't in the running for goat status who is?
