Final Results: EWS Finale Ligure 2020

Sep 27, 2020
by Ed Spratt
This round will likely come down to Morgane Charre and Melanie Pugin.

There may have only been three EWS rounds this year but that hasn't stopped the shortened season providing plenty of drama and nail-biting racing. Finale Ligure is a staple of the EWS and has closed out the series every year since its first year in 2013 and after many schedule changes, 2020 was no different.

By the end of a tough day of four stages, Morgane Charre and Jesse Melamed came out on top with both riders leading from the first stage of the day. The women's racing saw a battle between Morgane and last weeks winner Melanie Pugin but a slow Stage 2 for Melanie would hand the lead to Morgane. Estelle Charles backs up a series of great results in 2020 as she finishes today in third place and will be a rider to watch for 2021.

The men's racing saw a dominant performance from Jesse Melamed today who won all but one stage on his way to a third EWS victory. Florian Nicolai would have a consistent day to reach second place and Jack Moir proves his enduro racing prowess once again as he secured third position. Check out the full results and updates from the race as it happened below.

 Dear Adrien Dailly,

I'm terribly sorry for selecting you as my top male rider on my fantasy. You seem like a nice person, and in no way deserved the curse I have placed upon you. Please keep your head up; what has happened today was not your fault, but the fault of someone who cared more about winning an XT drivetrain than the success of a promising young rider.

With love and guilt,
Me

@Roguee: I swapped Florian with Adrien last minute Frown for the first time ever I would have had a competitive placement, I got the women's 1st and 2nd as well.

Jesse had a plan and stuck with it. I was a bit confused by his performance at Crankworx, but it just goes to show that the pros know what they're doing. Took his time ramping up, stayed healthy, and then took two out three EWS races in Europe on a brand new bike that his sponsor was hoping to get some hype. What a legend!
  • 15 1
Hard to tell if he was keeping it mellow for EWS or if Finn/Kasper/et al were really that much quicker than him. Either way, stoked for his EWS performance!

Let's not forget the faster racers stayed home.
  • 20 5
@mollow: Actually, the fastest racers did win.

Shoulda / coulda / woulda. Yes, it would have been amazing to have Hill and Rude race, but it doesn't matter if they're not there. There were plenty of heavy hitters in the men's field. Same with the women's side.

@jaydubmah: nope. This season will always have a huge Asterix next to it and you can't deny it. It's not like when someone injured himself and can't race, then that's fair game. But this is completely different.
  • 23 1
@mollow: gotta be in it to win it lad
  • 41 0
@mollow: if Rude wanted to win he could have made the trip and quarantined. And there's plenty of asterisks next to his results.
  • 12 0
@mollow: Why? Absolutely no regulations would have stopped Rude, Hill, etc. from coming to Europe if they had wanted to compete. They didn't, but by choice.
  • 26 0
@mollow: Actually I believe Asterix is rather short... Obelix is the huge one... Wink

@scvkurt03: Yeah, I guess we'll never truly know. Kasper is gonna be a problem next year. Dude is blazing fast.
  • 1 1
@mollow: l get what you're saying. Like when Rachel, Tahnee and Cecile where out. The rest of the field started winning. Jesse is fast as hell though. Without the other riders putting up a fight who knows what could of been.
  • 5 0
@Thirty3: Jesse has already proven he can win against the full field - see Whistler 2017. He's had a few tough breaks with injuries since then, otherwise I think there's a good possibility he might have racked up more wins since 2017.

Jack and Jesse, two of my favorite riders. Great to see them both at the top and I'm happy for Jesse showing that the first win on only two stages wasn't a fluke. Yes, Sam Hill and Richie Rude are home, but Maes is here and didn't win. And even if Sam and Richie took the top two steps every race Jesse would still be having his best season to date! Exited to seem him next year with some new confidence and clearly some sharp riding.

EWS coverage is so lame in surprised its as popular as it is. Imagine if the NFL or NBA never broadcast games and rarely showed any highlights and you just had to read articles and look at pictures. Compared to live World Cup coverage this is like watching paint dry. It's a great sport, but it would be nice to feel a little closer to it.
  • 19 3

@TobiasHandcock: What does my criticism of the coverage have to do with my username? What about your username "Handcock"? What does that imply lol. Yeah I read those and they were good but if that's all there was Would Cup DH coverage would be just as lacking as ews coverage.
  • 6 0
I am really going out on a limb here, but it might just be that the budgets in your comparison differ slightly.

Also, a world cup course is a fixed location and often the race will be held on the fixed track no matter the weather.

I get what you're saying, though. Live video coverage would be nice. Monetarily feasible? Not so sure.
  • 13 0
@DoubleCrownAddict: even with red bull's budget there are still quite large sections of world cup tracks which we don't get to see. And those tracks are in a bike park with supporting infrastructure nearby.

Take away that infrastructure and budget and multiply the number of tracks by 6 - 8. Oh yeah and don't forget those tracks are usually part of public access trails or similar when but being raced so you have even less time to set everything up.

In short, if you want to feel closer to the action then enter an EWS100 or EWS80 next season.
  • 1 11
flag nvranka (Sep 26, 2020 at 9:08) (Below Threshold)
@johnnyboy11000: that’s because red bull does a shit job. They choose stupid camera locations and omit half of the good sections of track in the feed. It’s a joke.

Why we don’t also have a drone following the racers is beyond me.
  • 6 0
@nvranka: maybe so but what might make a good place to stick a go pro for a sick shreddit wouldn't work for a live race over a 2km long track. Again even with red bull time and money is limited so you can't just decide to whack a camera in the middle of the steepest, densest woods for what might only result in a few seconds of footage depending on the angle.

We do get drone footage too, albeit from a distance and only in places where it's suitable to fly. It would be cool as f*ck to have a drone follow the riders down but you'd need quite a few drones as the riders are on track every 30 seconds, and the rules on flying are strict enough especially where the general public is concerned so would be a nightmare to organise.

Personally I think what we get is pretty good considering how much we have to pay for it.
  • 4 3
@johnnyboy11000: no doubt on the pay front, but I’d buy a wcdh season pass similar to the TDF if the coverage was better.
  • 3 0
@nvranka: I'd imagine drones could cause issues with the riders too... distractions, potential crash

Looks EWS finally killed the Masters category... Being the biggest market from men 30 to 50 old looks such a smart movement.. They went from 40 old to 35 young and now no one is interested into it? Mmm...

we old guys (39) love to see old glories performing at top level so we can realize how far are we from our most optimal performance...

BTW EWS kill my dream of my come back in Masters (not +35) after some more chill recovery years.. It was a good motivation for getting old keeping young...
