Would you rather win a EWS or the UCI downhill Overall?
Martin: Yes

Hopefully your “yes” was directed towards the downhill question. EWS doesn’t hold a candle to DH WC.

@CaliCol: Wow. Tone deaf on all counts.
  • 26 2
Did you hear? Nobody ever rode a total stage domination at men's.
Maes:"Hold my beer!"

Hot take: Martin Maes is the best pure mountain biker in the planet today.

@jozefk: I saw that on the feed but didn't Rude do it last year?

@almacigatrailrider: unless you know something we don't know, no official results have been passed from the testing agency to EWS. As of right now, the supposed test results have existed only in conversations.

@thesharkman: Official result: He tested positive and accepted it.
What is open, are the consequences, not the testing result itself.

Keegan grew up in that forest. He can pretty much ride most of that course blindfolded yet Maes is STILL faster. GG
  • 3 0
Yeah I was thinking that. Crazy!
  • 14 1
Still impressed Keegan is doing so well all round. I don't think Martin would do equally well on all these Crankworx disciplines. Though of course it would be interesting if he'd compete and prove me wrong.
  • 15 0
@vinay: Martin is mean Dual Slalom-er too. And he would probably do just fine on both Air-DH and DH... Nothing against Keegan but Martin is a magician on a any bike.
  • 3 0
@kusanagi72: True, he is also old 4cross world champ.
  • 4 1
@jozefk: I must have missed that. What year was that? Yeah no question Martin is a great and versatile racer in different disciplines. I just wanted to pointed out that just a few days after his amazing performance in different disciplines at Crankworx, Keegan did impressively well at the EWS.
  • 1 0
@kusanagi72: maybe needs some practice with wheelies Wink
  • 5 0
@vinay: he dominated 4cross and dh juniors for years. At 15 yr he joined wchamps 4cross as wildcard in wjnterberg and won the day.

Martin Maes- came into the season with a lot of pressure and shows he is a true champ by pulling through!
  • 16 0
Marty won on the 79er, or whatever the kids are calling them these days. Commence heads exploding.
  • 1 0
No, commence to the 79er catching and being very common by the end of the season and stock 79er bikes available to the public next year.

@Flowcheckers: it will be a new standard that they'll all try to convince us we need..

He rode 27.5 ... changed the wheel back I heard

Just wait for the new wheel size that is coming to go between 27 & 29” because we know everyone needs that

@zyoungson: totally, 28'1/4 or to be more precise 28.245999889

Then commence 10 years into the future and we all ride 48.32ers and laugh about how we used to think 79ers were cool
  • 3 0
 @endurogan: 79s not dead.
  • 2 1
@zyoungson: No no no... 27.5 is in between 26 and 29, so 29 is in between 27.5 and 30-something...
  • 1 0
@jozefk: his insta picture sure looks like it’s still setup 79er, and he would have changed his front wheel to make it all 27.5.
  • 1 0
@jozefk: confirmed on vital slideshow that he did ride 27.5/29er.
  • 17 0
Nice to see Bex Baraona smash it. The womens overall could be interesting

Congrats to Isabeau for breaking this long streak of 2nd places. Even if Cécile absence meant that victory was more accessible, she still had to do it, with pressure being on her shoulders.
  • 1 1
Isabeau best Cecile last season though...
  • 3 0
@TheSlayer99: That was 2017 in Derby, 2018 was Cecile 1st and Isabeau 2nd in every race (came down to the wire in Finale though!)

EWS website sucks! How long have they been in the game??
  • 6 1
Anyone want to talk about why women are masters at 35, yet men get there at 40? This isn’t meant to be a troll post either, I’m just intrigued why it wouldn’t be the same for continuity.

On to a troll idea though: Do the sanctioning bodies think women are over their prime at 35, and men get an extra five years?
  • 3 0
Those 5 women on the 35+ women’s podium were actually the only 5 participants in that category. I don’t know how old they are, but maybe only a couple of them are over fourty. In the men’s 40+ there were 18 participants. So no conspiracy here, they are just trying to get enough participants in each category.

 Maes won every stage! Incredible!

What happened with Sam Hill? Just wasn’t on the pace today?
  • 4 0
Struggling with illness according to his insta

 Martin is a maestro!
  • 4 1
@zoobab2: Martin the amaesing maestro maestered the course and took the win by a maessive maesure. I love that. Razz
  • 7 1
Anyone knows what happend to Sam Hill? So surprised he s not in the top 5! Did he crash?
  • 5 0
On the live feed they quoted him as saying that he kept choosing bad lines and falling into low line ruts. I don’t think he crashed, just didn’t have the best day.
  • 11 1
Couple crashes and the flu ,from Nigels ig

 Ews website is shocking
Maes starts strong
Bex on podium as expected
Thought both Johnson & Heap would have been far higher maybe soon
  • 1 0
Lot of colds/flu going round Australia the last weeks, betcha he got him some if that.
  • 4 1
Because Cecille has been so dominant, we tend to overlook how good Isabeau really is. She’s miles ahead of everyone else as well. But Cecille is on another highway unfortunately.
  • 3 0
Looks like EWS hasn’t gotten used to Cecile not being on top yet. Check the standings with Isabeau’s picture next to Cecile’s name. Old habits die hard I guess.

This is Martin Maes' year. I think he's about to upset a lot of people.
  • 1 0
Great result for Matt Stuttard. Spent most of last season injured and gets dropped by Hope and then gets 21st in the 1st EWS of the year
  • 2 0
Wow, women racing just became tight! Second and third place are separated literally by a single pedal stroke.
  • 2 0
Wow.. thats really anoying. Im 135 points behind the 1st. With a solid 0 from beerten
  • 3 0
Should I win? Hmmm.... Maes well!
  • 2 1
Could you explain why Morgane Charre is still a privateer? She is a former DH world champion and a regular top 10 dh worldcup racer.. Do results matter for girls?
  • 1 0
Wow, looks like Maes is going to be an absolute force this year. I mean we knew that but this was a dominant showing.
  • 2 1
The ladies’ times are closer than the men’s. Unusual, but good. Getting competitive.
  • 2 0
Miranda in 10th! Nice start into the season!
  • 1 0
Mixed wheel size gettin'er done already. Gonna be the new fad if Maes keeps this up, and smashing the field.
  • 1 0
 Noga means ‘leg’ in Polish
  • 7 0
Interesting. But now I'm thinking about how Polish means several things in English, and how whether it is capitalised determines both the type of noun and the pronunciation. I'm monolingual unfortunately so that's all I've got.

looks like my fantasy team pulled through
  • 1 0
I went back to look at my fantasy team, and I never took C. Ravanel out of my roster. Whoops.
  • 1 1
@neologisticzand: I double checked, and apparently Pugin and Beerten didn't even race? RIP me. lol
  • 3 0
@mtbikeaddict: beerten not evan on the startlist?? Why is she selectable if she is not racing?
  • 1 1
@Paulville301: I know. In the heat of the moment, having those two available, and seeing past results, I jumped on them, then felt like a complete idiot last night when I doublechecked the start list. Facepalm It would be a lot easier if the list were updated more, eg some racers weren't on there, and non racers were, but I guess that would be more work for PB so I should use my brain more... lol Frown
