Also Marcello 2nd in the world!!!

@Ricey212: Stupid thing to say, different conditions in qualifying, Rachel did crash you know and needed up in hospital, you don't win crashing, Tracy won, you can only beat whos on track, that's like saying well, if Anne Carro was still racing Rachel wouldn't win, or if Gwin hadn't made a silly mistake, he probably would have won, his time at that split was still a sec faster than Minnars!

Awesome Race. Bummed for Gwin, not sure what he did half way down there but would have loved to see a clean run from him. If not Gwin happy that Minnar took, can't ever argue with him. Don't care for creepy Jack. Damn impressed with Marcelo. Connors run at the top was just ridiculous, so sick. And that's my 5 sec race recap

@norcal77: ok "GOAT for now" is the best and most confusing statement I've read in a long time..
you are the greatest of all TIME.....but only at this moment in TIME....????????????

 Moir was on a 29 as well@chappers998:
  • + 1
@Joeief: GOAT in terms of his overall career. He's definitely one of the best to ever race. That was incredible all around. This really made up for the last stop.
  • + 7
@fantaman: gwin made a mistake.. his time would have been even with minaars 29er.
  • + 13
@trauty: the difference isn't wheel size. It's fit. Greg looks like any other rider on 27.5 because hes so much taller. He now has a bike that fits him properly, I expect him to run away with this season.
  • + 1
I was hoping Minnaar would rub it in by saying this is the first time he's ever had a bike that fits him... 23 wins deep and now I will begin. That would have been a big psychological blow to the opposition. He is the GOAT.
  • + 4
@jaame: Minnaar was competing in sub optimal conditions. Now we will witness final form Minnaar. We might start seeing bigger gaps between him and the other guys. Like 5-10...............

Minutes.
  • + 4
@Ricey212: That's speculation. This is racing, and anything can happen to any one at anytime.
  • + 7
 Yeah Neko!!!
  • + 1
 @Scotj009: couple of crashes
  • + 0
@vroomvroompartystarter: yes. that is my point. although wheelsize deffinitelly helped at that wood section , ultimately gwins skillset made him pretty much just as fast on his 650b. hard to say . knowing gwins mentality , maybe he will refuse 29er dh just to feel properly challenged , but then knowing how much he likes his jeffsy....
  • + 0
@vroomvroompartystarter: of course it's about the size of the wheel!! It's proven to be faster,so all riders on 29ers have and advantage. What's amazing is how gwin managed to stay within distance and not for the mistake Would have won. I think once yt make a 29er then it's game over. Gwin is a machine to go faster on such a open fast track. Hopefully next season it'll all be back to normal with all riders on the same size wheels so no one is at a disadvantage.
  • + 6
@mikelee: when almost everyone has a 29er - it's not a game over, it's back to point 0. Gwin would win big time - if he was able to get time back on a freaking fireroad, after coming to a near stop, getting almost one sec back, on the run into it. If I was a Flat Earther I'd tell UCI to check his bike for a freaking motor. That was fkng mind blowing how he got back from it. Also, it's not a coincidence that podium is filled with pretty much same riders. BEcause they are fkng fast, even if 29ers roll faster on gravel. Seeing Gwin ride in person makes it rather clear why he is such a successful guy, that dude is on another track, riding straight, or cornering through sht others jump around. He just nails sht that would throw other people's front wheels straight off the track. If you look at some of his runs, he can nail a 90degree+ corner with one apex, whereas most go very high turn in and load the bike somewhere in 2/3s of the corner, catapulting them out of the corner. That means some sliding gets involved. He, almost like Connor Fearon, nails every brake spot and just draws a fkng smooth line, carrying sht loads of speed out of those corners. And he's a fkng animal. I tried a few workouts from his previous coach Ryan Hughes, dude, if you can survive to the 4th round in the circuit, you're good. If you can do 3 circuits in one workout session, you are a freaking God. And these require sht loads of all sorts of strengths. Your, heart lungs and legs may be ok for another go, but your hands won't be able to hold kettlebells. So he's fkng strong as hell and has plenty of power in the legs to propell that torso that pounds the bike into the ground and lift it from it. His upper body is probably stiffer than a dick of a teenager after 4 viagras. Where does wheel size come into play here? Mostly in clueless people's minds. A small adjustment that gives advantage for 3,4 races for a few dudes, before everyone else is on same sort of bike.
  • + 0
@mikelee: Minnaars winning run was 5sec quicker at the fort last year which is a significant chunk of time. Same track, same conditions give or take. Im not convinced the big hoops have an overall advantage on this track.
  • + 1
@Ritgut: it's pretty obvious 29ers have an advantage. The question is how much?
  • + 0
@jaame: read his tekst again three times and respond again
  • + 2
@Ritgut: Track was significantly changed for this year's race. Whole new section above the woods.
  • + 0
@Ritgut: it's been proven they're faster! Minnaar himself has said they're faster! The only reason they're being used is because they're faster!!!! It's no coincidence the top two guys are on 29ers and probably the fastest rider ever in gwin is the only guy on 27.5 to push them. There's no argument that they're faster, the problem I have is that it's an unfair advantage to the riders who don't have access to the tech! There's no way the uci should have let this happen imo. I have no prob with the wheel size as long as they all use it.
  • + 4
@mikelee: he also said he didn't give a sht when it was blowing and raining. or that big wheels are big, and that at the end of the day there are rocks, roots and sht, and you have to a good run down the mountain, he generally seem quite unenchanted about the whole wheel thing, as well as embarassed about the whole shit storm, seemingly finding it ridiculous - and as I wrote above people obviously don't give a fk about that. What they give a fk is two separate universes and two perfectly identical conditions where in one Greg is on 275 V10 (with exact same paint scheme on) and in the other one, he is on a 29er. And based on that metaquantumphysical scenario, people who wouldn't be able to deliver two consistent runs within even fkng 15 seconds from each other on that track, feel fully entitled to say that 29ers win races because they are faster. The moment I am on a 29er and score 10 seconds over Greg on 26, you can say that 29" wheels are faster. Such paralell universe does not exist, i can tell you that. He could have a beer with Peaty or smoke a joint with Ratboy and he would still catch up on me and kick my butt. He would beat Danny Hart yesterday, even if Danny had a fkng Polaris missile attached to his back. Because in racing life happens. And life does not give a flying fk about diameters. life takes air out of tyres, fks up your brakes, breaks your chain and throws your face into sht. And we all know that when UCI steps into anything, sht happens.
  • + 3
@WAKIdesigns: yes he did and you could see it pissed him off cos his win is not taken as it should as the reporter was implying the wheels gave him an advantage. He knows,I know and you know they're a clear advantage. That's why they're being used! I've ridden fort bill lots of times and trust me,big wheels would gain seconds. It's so open in places and even the rocky areas would benefit from the bigger wheels.
  • + 1
@Ritgut: not quite the same track.
  • + 1
@Ritgut: oh dear! You do realise it wasn't the same track as last year!!! You new here?
  • - 2
@mikelee: a skin suit would be a CLEAR advantage. 29" wheels are a minor advantage. If your wage depends on that tiny advantage - you use them. Minnaar is one of, if not the smoothest rider out there, he can win in Fort Bill despite using carbon rims, which surely get him more tired than alu rims, at least in the top section. According to the latest test by Bike Radar, heavier frame may be an advantage, maybe alu prototype gave Jack Moir 2 or 3 seconds? Maybe Greg wouldbefaster on an alu version of V10? It all matters. The only meaningful advantage in Fort Bill can be made using skin suits.
  • + 1
 @WAKIdesigns: and 29 inch wheels
  • + 0
unlike 29" wheels they did tests with skin suits. They were getting by average 5 seconds during world champs at Fort Bill. Consistently.
  • + 1
 @mikelee: precisely!
  • + 1
@Joeief: Yes...at this moment. If gwin continues at this pace he may pass minaar at some point "in time" in my opinion. Dont pretend that that Gwin didnt change the sport and isnt the most dominant DHer you have ever seen. Mayweather has been around forever and has tons of wins.....does that make him the greatest of all time. No...
  • + 2
Waki what are you talking about? Are you saying no one has tested 29ers back to back with 27.5?

Mike has got it spot on. The only reason they are on 29 is because they have performed tests and it has proven to be faster.

The fun vs fast argument does not exist in racing. There is only one thing that matters, which is why several companies have pumped money into 29.
  • + 2
@WAKIdesigns: of course they've tested 29 v 27.5 back to back!!! Trek have said they've tested and 9ers are faster, the syndicate have tested and made a completely new bike due to the results! There is NO question they're faster,it's a bigger wheel! It covers more ground for the same crank revolution as a 26-27.5! Once up to speed it's covering more ground and will smooth out rougher terrain. Waki you normally come across as intelligent, however if you really don't agree a big wheel will roll down hill fast than a small one even with all the riders either using or desperate to use them I can't help you. Go get a football and a tennis ball roll them both down a hill, come back here with the winner!!
  • - 2
@mikelee: if the balls have to go straight yes... but now brake and turn.. which is faster. You use no logic and no facts... you just believe what you hear. I see no data. Nowhere... just talk... Waki is right...there is no continues statistic advantage.. and results show that... the same winner as last year... but close... very close to 650b's... how can you relate that to bigger wheels?

flag Trailstunter (Jun 6, 2017 at 6:23) (Below Threshold)
@mikelee: btw.. if it was all faster and even the little D Hart choose it... why is Rachel not using it and most women?
They surely should come closer to Rachel right?
Why is Schurter still champ on 650b... why is he not on 29 in XC?
  • + 1
 @Trailstunter: Is this a joke?

Have you been reading the news? Several companies have actually gone to the effort of making 29ers when they didn't have to. One former world champ is crying into his cornflakes about how unfair it all is.

What do you think? They are using 29ers just for shits and giggles?
  • + 1
@Trailstunter: turning and braking on a modern 29er are only fractions slower. Where as 90% of tracks corners ain't that tight! They're all Bermed up so there really is no great time Lisa compared to the seconds being made on every rough or open section. There are no super tight tech tracks on the circuit any more. A couple of tight sections won't cost what can be made up on the rest of the course.
  • + 1
@Trailstunter: Rachal is pretty small and has no reason at the minute. She's a good 10 seconds ahead of the rest. Besides I said the wheel is faster than a smaller wheel. I've no doubt that it won't suit smaller riders like brosnan, hart etc. Again this is a disadvantage to them. I can see the sport alienating smaller riders, with them not being able to match a rider with the same ability but on bigger wheels. They'll have to try them out, maybe it'll work for them maybe not.
  • - 1
@jaame: What is the first goal of a private company? Tell me ;-)

Provit son... profit.... Marketing is the art of letting you buy what you don't want to have ...

Make the pro's tell you that they are faster and actually win a race..... and people start throwing your money at their screen....
  • - 1
@mikelee: So actually you say .. the tracks are made easier... so the wagon wheels can just roll over without skill Wink

Well in Europe... we tent to ride Enduro's with tight corners... should that be the reason that 650b is ruling the EWS? Yeah son... it is... downhill nowadays is indeed just roll it down the hill... no tight turns... and no switchbacks... big gaps and big jumps rule it all.... and what a fun we have huh?

Kill the berms... kill the straight tracks... bring back skill levell ...
But even on this pretty straight course.. 29 haven't showed it's clear dominance... just a few seconds that could have been won anywhere... and a little mistake of Gwin or he had won... but hey... that is because Gwin is sooooo much better right? Haha... for every flaw of 29 a new point to keep up your believes...

So tell me... 29 is been most successful in XC right... as there is almost no suspension and a lot of pedaling has to be done..... Why is reigning for years world champ Schurter faster on a 650b? Explain please...
  • + 0
@mikelee: Why should'nt it suit smaller riders? The law of the wagon wheels is still there right?
Easier over bumbs... faster in the straight... even Hart did some whips.... tell me ... facts please facts....
They need to go faster too right? Cause they would'nt stand a chance anymore against the wagonwheels as your arguments are correct...

@trauty: but Minnaar made a mistakes as well.. Its not like he had a perfect run!
  • + 1
@mikelee: But Minnaar made mistakes as well!
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: but 29 is faster.. I take myself and go against myself on the same track.. From 26,27.5 to 29.. All my past pb are bested on the 29..Go against yourself to see the gains... Obviously a pro who rides full time would still destroy on 26 vs the lame working stiff on his 29..
  • + 1
@Trailstunter: Schurter is no longer racing 650b. He switched to 29 last year. He likes his riding position to be low and out over the front wheel and with his size, the 650b worked well even though the wheels are slower. Now, Scott has made serious changes to both his hard tail and full suspension bikes in order to use 29 inch wheels and maintain his preferred riding position. 17mm longer reach, 17mm lower stack height, -25 degree and slightly shorter stem, and lower standover height. His new Spark RC 900 also has a more slack head tube angle, a steeper seat tube angle, and shorter chain stays than the previous Spark 900. I'd say the 29er is treating very well so far.

  • + 1
 @norcal77: yeah bro
  • + 0
@teamtoad: Still he didn't need it... He became champ without 29... so not Scot has made all his wishes come true... they finally can tell the marketingmachine that it is all because of 29" Wink
But previous years show that it is not... and they have to rape a 29" with all kind of tricks to make it ride like a 650b already does out of the box...
  • + 1
29ers are faster no doubt about it. And for pros it does play a role. They can even measure it because they can deliver consistent times. Amateurs can't. I see people on carbon bikes in bike parks but don't see anyone in skin suits though... i mean you buy a carbon bike or longer and slacker geo to be faster isn't? Why don't you take the visor off
Your helmet then? Will make you faster than buying carbon bars. 100% guaranteed
  • + 1
@Trailstunter: Many MTB racers became champions without the all of the features of the bikes of today. Did Nino need to switch to 650b from 26? Nino's 650 bikes were not exactly "out of the box". As I have mentioned, he is very particular about his body position on the bike and especially having a very low bar height that keeps him out over the front wheel. Schurter himself said his best chance of getting that illusive gold medal in Rio would be with a 29er and the development and racing of his new bikes began with that as a main goal.

Olympic Bronze on 26in
Olympic Silver on 27.5in
Olympic Gold on 29in
  • + 1
 @teamtoad:
Well if all the pro's are on 29, with the advantages as all 29 groupies say... and they are all fit as it can be... he should have lost many times because the margin between those pro's is really narrow...

All pro's have contracts where they sign to support their sponsors, there is nothing, but really nothing that will make them do otherwise... they need their sponsors... never bite the hand that feeds you. So when Scott says jump, he will ask: How High? Wink and that goes for every other rider... That is what makes it so odd that Bruni has the gutts to say he stays in 650b, although Specialized is the 29" brand... BTW what is odd also is that for a 29" brand as Specialized... they never came with a 29" downhill bike ... they just follow now... isn't that weird? Razz
Nothing is there to prove a 29in will give him the win over any other factor like conditioning, form of other riders and so on...

I ride flats so I don't know, but I guess you can't really pedal if a cleat breaks.
  • + 5
Minnaar's Honda never failed back in the days...
  • + 7
@yanndmc: just fyi, that Honda RN-01 wasn't actually a gearbox bike. There was so much speculation at the time at what was inside, but after the project was shelved it came out that it was just a conventional cassette drivetrain mounted (with mods) inside a housing. Totally different setup to how modern gearboxes are put together today. PB's own RC wrote some articles about it in MBFiction back in the day...
  • + 3
@g123: it eliminated all the downsides of a derailleur (un-sprung weight, exposure to dirt or impacts) but your right technically it was a sprocket box
  • + 5
@g123: Though it didnt share the same priciples as what most would consider a gearbox, surely anything that packages a gear change system in a box is by defenition a 'gearbox'?
  • + 5
@Racer951: by definition, maybe. by technical standards, never.

My impression was that he didn't unclip, it had something to do with the tranny...
Warner and Claudio should at least be on their game and know which sole rider is running a gearbox equipped bike, more gearhead nerdiness please!
  • + 1
@TransforDerek: it's not so hard to destroy it, they aren't so durable :/
  • + 2
@leopaul: Hahaha yes, they surely should know exactly what bike he was on. Rob even told Claudio he could see a derailleur. WTF.
  • + 2
@raschaa: I was disappointed that Warner and Claudio missed that one. Also the fact they are constantly explaining bike tech. I think most of the viewers are as up to speed wuth things as they are.

Warner's comment that he "lost his derailler"... was golden.
  • + 1
@Racer951 If Minnaar told everyone they are faster you'd get flattened in the rush.
  • + 1
@Racer951: correct. Gears in a box = "gearbox". Also the original RN01 was indeed a set of actual gears. It went through 3 itterations to save weight.

  • + 3
Agree, it's felt more like a rep,at of bad editing than live racing! Very poor for a company like Red Bull and with all the technology now that is low cost to be able to get good footage, they didn't even do they're own Red Bull athletes justice! Very poor!
  • - 3
@richard01: yep! And the Donald wants to kick some ass!
  • + 5
The camera angles I've come to terms with, but it's frustrating how often the splits don't work. Or how only certain riders get their stats shown at the start gate.
  • + 6
@WAKIdesigns: Nothing's free. If you're not the customer, you're the product. If I'm going to sell my eyeballs to Red Bull+other advertisers for 2+ hours, I don't think it's too much to ask that they actually show the parts of the race that matter. After all, it's in their best interest to do so: too poor of a broadcast, & I won't tune in anymore: I've given up on Crankworks race broadcasts, after tuning in every year to see one camera on the final drop.
  • + 2
Why split up the women and men, and then still only show a few women? I dedicated 2 hours to watching them (read: got up at 5am), and then they only used 20 min of that to show racing? That was BS. What a waste of time. I could have watched them repeat it (30 min before the men at 7) and stayed in bed longer.
  • + 1
 just a quick reminder - youtu.be/Ohu2vLL0Dsc
not sure if you'd have been too thrilled about the coverage if it looked like that.

i wouldn't say that fort william has been shown any better in the past, which probably has a lot to do with the track being twice as long as other tracks, while start intervalls are the same.
and if you're really interested in why which sections are shown, you can think about it and apply fairly simple logic.
unless either the track gets shortened by a lot, or start gaps are longer, things are probably not gonna change.
  • + 2
@dirtyE: of course they couldn't show every riders full run on the live broadcast without a time machine. But they did have cameras recording those runs in full and at the time of my comment, the director was showing riders coming out of the start gate then immediately cutting to them pedalling along the XC section and along the motorway. To be fair, it did improve a bit for the later riders and they showed a better mix of the top section and the woods to make things a bit more interesting to watch.
@waki: I should get my lazy shit arse off my sofa and do what exactly? What a strange comment.
  • + 1
@ChopchopUk: Agreed. even more, if they're going to chop the runs up that badly, I'd like to see an "expanded broadcast" after the fact that has more of the runs shown.
  • + 1
@groghunter: absolutely, an extended version showing full runs of the top 20-30 and highlights of the riders lower down the field would be very popular I reckon. They've already done the hard work setting up the cameras and filming the event, it seems a no brainer.
  • + 1

  • + 3
@Clifflane3: the thing is that dh is not like moto gp, where track always runs the same... So i think there are sooo many factors to consider that maybe at some point 29ers advantages dont make that big of a difference... but then again, it´s true that top steps are within seconds of each other...
  • + 0

  • + 1
 @StiT25: probably
  • + 4
@stefanfresh: You're right. The track never runs the same like in motorsports. Of conditions can vary there too based on moisture, temperature, and even what vehicles ran the track before!

BUT THE COURSES CHANGE LITTLE FOR YEARS AT A TIME!

For DH, they are always changing and that means...

* Impossible to keep something like lap or run records
* More difficult to accurately gauge performance increase from year to year
* Hastily (and often poorly) added new sections that meet no known standard whatsoever and don't appears to be tested before events.

I've said this before: RIDERS UNION!!!
  • + 5
They compared his run to Moir's, & Gwin was green on every section minus his mistake (in those comparisons, green doesn't mean faster, it means within a tenth of a second to the other rider.) I'd have really liked to have seen that analysis for Gwin & Minaar. That's the kind of thing I really like to see in the post-race show, if you think about other sports broadcasts, they definitely have more analysis after the fact, whereas so far, even with the expanded coverage, the post race show for these DH broadcasts is mostly commentary.
  • - 2

  • + 9
@Trailstunter: most people actually say the ride of a 29er feels slower yet the clock says quicker.
What makes you think a 29er should have won by miles on this track? You got access to some numbers or are you just going on 'feel'?
Greg wanted to try a 29er DH bike again, that's pretty much the reason we are where we are. He's just smoked Fort bill yet again so I'd say he's pretty happy with his bike at the mo. Have the other brands seized an opportunity to sell more bikes? I don't think so, they know as much as us. They could all have pumped money into making bikes that their riders are actually slower on so...they'll lose twice. I'm losing my mind over you industry conspiracy theorists.
From what little we have to go on I'm hoping some riders will suit the big wheels and others the smaller and it will really help mix up the field and keep the sport exciting.

Only thing that made the difference today was staying on your bike through the woods (it was more like the Somme) and that had nothing to do with wheel size, that was just pure skill and line choice.
Minnaar ever the professional did his homework in the gap between juniors and final practice, he was down in the woods on foot getting a feel for the conditions and the lines.
  • + 12
@abbottt1: we all know they roll faster, but this is still about the rider, fact is 29er fits Minaar well and Jack is a big boy too, he's been riding well all year,he won in Rotorua on a 27.5" M16, both deserved theyre results based on they're riding! It's still not conclusive like EWS it's going to have strengths and weaknesses plenty of 29er riders crashed, Gwins time had he not made a silly error would have again put the cat among the pigeons!
Also note Tracy Hannah 27.5" smashed Miriam who was on a 29er.

@abbottt1: 3rd place was 27.5 with a massive visible mistake, costing 2-3 seconds at least including massive loss of momentum.

@Muckal: yes they sure are with all this 650 stuff! Ha
  • + 1
I think it's interesting. If 29 were significantly faster, the market in DH land would've changed instantly. Instead it's important not to forget that at the world cup level, a marginal change can be a winning change. More importantly, not making that marginal change will often be a losing one. That's the point—it's not supposed to be worlds faster (although that would be cool). It's just that whomever has the leg up is going to win the battle.
  • + 1
@bohns1: not the same as him back in the day in a 26" though... he use to manhandle those little wheels
  • + 0
@Trailstunter: I think you are full of crap. 29's have a slight advantage due to the wheel-size. Not like a rear suspension vs a hard tail but much more subtle. If you exclude race day in Lordes 29,s dominated the top 3 of both events, despite the competition.
I also disagree with your industry conspiracy. Many PB readers seem to buy a new bike every other year, while others still ride their 26" bikes. The arrival of the 29" is just more choice for the former. No one is forcing you to change.

Believe all you want
  • + 2
@mitochris: Actually , thats the problem with new industry "Standards" . . . THEY ARE forcing us to buy the new stuff... Look at Trek , if you want their top of the line flagship xc, trail, enduro or DH bike, you have to buy 29" wheels...Soon to be the same with Specialized, Giant and others will follow..

What the industry needs to do if develop BOTH platform as different tools for different application but they wont..Instead they will keep feeding us marketing BS and way too many uneducated dudes are already buying it..."Oh hey , I need that bike cause they say it'll make me faster by .00002 second on my local trail "

That will drive the demand for the smaller wheels way down and soon they will get phased out.

Its not new tech, its not more fun to ride the big wheels and guys like Richie Rude knows they can be just as quick , if not faster on the smaller 27.5" ... so why are they pushing so hard for this?

Big tall dudes, riding on wide open tracks finally feel like they've found the right bike for them..That translate into comfort and into more speed in the end...Now for me ? Where I ride? No thank you.

We are not all the same size , or ride the same trails and some guys wouldnt benefit from the bigger wheels at all.

To be significantly faster to me, the gap would need to be 10-15 second faster..not 1 or 2 seconds...

3%..what a f*cking joke, shed 5 pounds of a bike and that'll make you 3% faster ! lol

Now go ahead and gimme bad rep cause it seems every time we say something bad against the big wheels we practically get banned from Pinkbike
  • + 2
@tuumbaq: I reckon you make a tonne of sense.

I personally have nothing against 29ers in DH, in fact I'm stoked Minnaar found a bike that with 29er wheels that seems to fit him spot on. But to tell us they're significantly superior so we should all have one is bollocks.

If you like a 29er, awesome, glad you're having fun. But I have ridden multiple bikes of multiple wheelsizes (sometimes on the same type of chassis) and I prefer 27.5, so don't tell me it's inferior.
  • + 2
@tuumbaq: Actually it seems that the lightest bikes aren't fastest. Check out CP's 'leady weight' Razz
As for 'pushing so hard' and 'telling us it's inferior' ...I haven't experienced that at all. In fact it seems like hey are actually developing both wheel sizes along side one another which is exactly what you're asking for...?
A 27.5" 'race' machine with looong chainstays and really low BB already is a poor choice for the guy who spends every day of the season in the park. Add to that a 29" race bike....I think there will be plenty of riders who still want a 27.5" DH 'park' type bike and if they keep buying em they're not going anywhere.
But what if a 29er IS faster for you? IS more fun for you? Have you considered that or you just so mad at the evil industry right now?
  • + 1
@tuumbaq: and @Trailstunter: I'm rather sure the top teams have done this. They will have compared lap times on multiple runs. At least the XC people will have done it. personally, I have not, but then again, I am old school and short. I actively decided against a 29" trail bike. I can't see myself ever buying a 29" other than as a road bike.

But I am really interested in who forces you to buy a new bike? I really don't get it. I rode my previous bike for 13 years. Upgraded and replaced some stuff, yes, but the frame and many components were the same. I can still get stuff for it, despite being a 26" bike and the stuff I can get is still good. After 13 years I went with a 27.5. Yes, I can't change parts between the two, but after 13 years I can't really expect that.
I understand that frames break and not getting the same frame or a newer version of the same frame that still accepts all the parts is frustrating, but there are plenty of fantastic bike companies out there, which will build 27.5 for some time. Just don't buy a Trek, Spesh or Giant.
When replacing your bike in a few years time, you can make a new choice.
As I said, I am short and would feel uncomfortable on a 29" trail bike, so they are not for me. I hope that when I need to renew my bike that there will be decent 27.5 options. If we keep buying 27.5 bikes, companies will build them and it seems that they are developing both sizes. I am more worried that 27.5+ will be the norm, instead of 27.5. When I started a 2.3 tire was big. Now most have 2.3 to 2.5 and these + sizes are crazy. I live in the flat and have to pedal to get places :-).

It's really a shame that they're not able came up with as many cameras to cover the complete track. Especially if there is spot where so many rider have lost some time.
  • - 1
At least you get to watch some of it. Did you have to pay to watch it or was it completely free! Could it have been better? Sure, but there is no money in it for red bull, they broadcast this as a service to their customers. No one is paying them to broadcast it so they can't send 50 camera men to cover the longest course on the circuit. Be grateful you get to watch anything because without them , you would just read about after the fact.
  • + 19
@Three6ty: that being said, I would gladly pay money for a better broadcast were it a choice
  • + 9
@Three6ty: Of course it's great that red bull broadcasts the downhill races. But nevertheless they could've done so much better today without spending ten thousands of dollar. And it's not only about you or me who watch this events anyway. It's about those people who want to get in touch with the downhillsport and then have to make experience, that the crux of this great and spectacular track is not covered by cameras so they have no clou where the riders lost the most of the time. And the fact that red bull is the broadcaster of this event makes it even more ridiculous when you have a look how much they spent every year in different kind of sports.
  • + 8
@Three6ty It all about branding for RedBull. No company is going to broadcast this out of the goodness of their heart. I do indeed appreciate that it's provided for free, but spotty coverage like this only hurts them.
  • + 6
@Three6ty: Lol, nothing is free. Someone is paying for this somehow. It is not being provided to us because it makes them feel or warm and cuddly inside.

Without redbull media who probably has a license to be the ONLY broadcaster, someone else would be stepping in and probably doing a better job.
  • + 7
@AntiGrav87: I doubt it! I have been in and around the DH game for nearly 20 years now. It has never been a mainstream sport and aside from a few races broadcast weeks after they were ran ( back in the late 90's ie. Kamakazi DH at Mammoth) it is rare to see this on traditional TV. It is a great spectator sport for those of us that are into it but lets face it. 99.9% of the worlds population has no idea about DH Mtb Biking much less Racing. Red Bull is a Juggernaut and they are broadcast everything and anything when it comes to odd sports ( meaning not the big 5 sports, Football, Futbol, baseball, basketball and Hockey ). And by the way it is free to you and I! I dont pay a cent to watch it on RedBull TV. I don't drink redbull so I'm not paying for it thru that either. But I do appreciate them broadcasting the races and with a race spread out all over the place and no Helicopter coverage it is hard to film that track from top to bottom. My whole point is appreciate that you can see it in the first place. Because I really doubt anyone else would broadcast it, because there is no revenue in it for them. Again this is from my view in the USA. it can be differerent around the globe. Another reason I love PB, is because I get to connect with all of you all over the world!
  • + 4
@Three6ty: This is just not how the world works. Nothing is ever free, you may not be handing any money to Redbull here, but they are incorporating that into the price of whoever is paying. No company does something of this magnitude unless it has a positive effect on their revenue in the long term. You really think there is some Exec at Redbull going "Lets put on a live stream that will cost us $100,000's every world cup race and lets not have any revenue from it just so we can make 0.1% of the world happy!"......

They get so much out of this. Advertising, name recognition, brand loyalty from spectators and if DH does start becoming more popular of a spectator sport they will have a monopoly on being the sole coverage provider.
  • + 1
@AntiGrav87: "They get so much out of this. Advertising, name recognition, brand loyalty from spectators and if DH does start becoming more popular of a spectator sport they will have a monopoly on being the sole coverage provider."
I totally agree with your statement, but I don't see any other company picking this up that can put the resources into it other than Red Bull, but it still does not cost me a cent to watch it! They get their return by selling more RedBull! Bottom line.

But again, DH will never be a Mainstream sport and because of the remote locations they run the races in, it will never see 50K+ people going to watch it. Don't get me wrong, I love DH and am glued to my Ipad watching it when it's on, but we are a very small group who truly enjoy it!

www.cyclingnews.com/news/record-number-of-viewers-for-2013-uci-mountain-bike-world-cup-coverage

Just google lives stream viewers UCI if you don't want to click the link. I think you would be blown away by the amount of people who are watching. And DH is the #1 most viewed event for this UCI/RBMH partnership. Also the rate of growth for online viewership is seeing double digit % growth EVERY YEAR. That is awesome stuff for the sport. At those rates you will be getting millions of viewers tuning in live for each event in just a few years.

There is massive amounts of advertising money going on with viewer #'s like that. They can do better. Do not just give them a free pass for bad work because you think it was free for you to watch. Just imagine if they had been able to provide good coverage, with the best spots of the track being featured instead of the most accessible. You would get even more growth every year. It is just bad business by them the way they are handling this right now.

@ktmtb: dislocated shoulder and trip to hospital if it's true. Tracey Hannah or Seagrave for the win.

@Nairnster: When did Rach dislocate her shoulder, early morning practice?

@neimbc: i agree with the yawn, sorry Rachel, but now its a REAL race
  • + 0
 @Racer951: Yes, in the woods.
  • + 3
@ktmtb: comment was made before i knew. But it still holds true - Tracey did Rachel proud - she blew out the field in true Rachel fashion!
  • + 2
@ktmtb: she crashed, that's Downhill even the best crash it's not if, it's when! That's racing, not couch surfing, most here probably crash and hurt themselves getting off the couch!

 Pour one out for gearboxes
  • + 2
Hasn't he been riding one for a few seasons now? Not like it blew up the first time it touched a DH course.
  • + 24
Why such a long stop (1 hour) between women and men? It sucks
  • + 9
They don't broadcast all the men
  • + 22
They could just broadcast the finishing area during that off time and return to commentary on schedule. Frown
  • + 12
It's a joke. Bad programming decision.
  • + 12
Yeah let's start a petition. As much as I like all the other info (Claudio and Rob doing their thing) I would rather watch the rest of the field do their runs, is quite cool watching the riders get faster and faster and seeing where the better riders gain speed.
  • + 10
@DownhillDoozy: they didn't even show the full top 20! The coverage began Phil Atwill #20 was on course and they went immediately to Technical Difficulties' while they fired up the usual pre race jibber jabber.
I'd way rather the top 30 or 40. than dead air. Wake up Red Bull!
  • + 3
@endlessblockades: they showed the top 26, the riders numbers are based on standings from round one. What a race! Knew Greg would pull it out. Shark attack absolutely killing it too!
  • + 5
They used to put the women at the start of the men's broadcast. And everyone conplained that it wasn't live
  • + 0
@DownhillDoozy: This may be a stupid question but if the rider numbers are based on standings from the previous race. Are the next race numbers assigned based on (race-1 results + race-2 results)/(# of races). So Minnar would be (42 + 1)/2 = 21.5?

And why not have an over all season standings sheet released with these race results. Who is currently leading the championship? Gutierrez Villegas (4 +3)/2 = 3.5?
  • + 1
@PinkBikeWhisperer: That is indeed a stupid question. They are overall standings, I said they were based from round one as that was the only race so far!
  • + 20
GOAT absolutely incredible! 29er fits Minaar and other tall guys like a glove, Hart looked like a little boy riding his daddy's bike!
  • + 32
 He always looks like that
  • + 9
Exactly what I thought. Greg looked good on his bike. Danny looked really bad especially when he was skating down the mud shoot looking like he wasnt able to touch the ground.
  • + 3
That's the point... taller than 6ft 29er is a must.
  • + 2
@BeerGuzlinFool: BB is same height off ground on 29 and 27.5. Therefor 'seat' and bars are the same height. Bike is no taller than a 27.5. Just running bigger wheels.
  • + 20

To be honest it may be good for her. Takes some of the pressure away and she knows she's still the fastest. Her qualifier was still quicker than Tracy's race run if I remember correctly.
  • + 10
Lol and here come the neg props.

Hannah quali: 5.42.666 race: 5.39.298
Nicole quali: 5.49.817 race: 5.49.543
Carpenter quali: 5.52.742 race: 5.55.299

Rachel's qualifier was 5.29.322 and everyone was going more or less about the same in race runs as qualis. Not taking anything away from Tracy, you've got to make it to the race to be able to win it but it feels like getting rid of the pressure (that obviously has quite an effect on Rachel if you listen to her interviews) could be a good thing for her in the long run.
  • + 1
@el-nombre: I heard they made the woods "slightly" easier on race day so her qualifying time was very good. Rachel is just awesome and setting standards for others to follow.

Did she have a 29'er? I heard 29'ers were supposed to help with the hard sections?
I'm confused.
Someone should get fired over this.
  • + 2
I think it's because she went OTB there yesterday, probably shook her up then hearing how bad it was today led her to make a (sadly wrong) judgement call that she'd be more competitive if she just hot footed through instead of trying to paddle through the muck...

Just wait for Leogang, he looks on point to me, this is going to be a great battle all year between Minnar the GOAT and Gwin! Cant wait till next week!!
  • + 1
 Who said it was?
  • + 1
I don't get all those saying the wheel size doesn't matter. Minnaar tested both wheel sizes and found the 29er to be significantly faster. He didn't change wheel sizes because there is no difference. Obviously the rider is still the most significant factor, but it appears the 29ers offer some significant advantages.
  • + 6
I believe it was slightly faster, and the big deal was that it fit him better. Loic hates them, Loris doesn't like them. Women's was won by a 27.5, beating out the 29er in 2nd. Wheel size advantages are almost insignificant, don't fall for the media.
  • + 2
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: I agree I think it has a lot to do with body size and fit on the bike... you saw the same thing when SC finally made an XXL to fit him and peaty, his race results jumped over night... Hart looked way out of his element on the wheels but Greg and Jack looked right at home.
  • + 4
It fits him, bike fit has and always is the most important aspect to being fast! End of debate!
  • + 3

PB, give me something today, f*ck just let Claudio go out into the local woods and interview Scottish riders, or get Tippie out there with fans pouring beer on themselves. What is Danny Hart eating right now?!

Okay. I'll just go for a ride.
  • + 1
Have to say, this one was an absolute cracker! Varied weather, tricky new sections, some ballsy newcomers making their mark, new technology, Gwin's bottom section... And a lot to make up for after last week. But that coverage on Red Bull was an embarrassment. They've done this enough to know what to do - especially at Fort William. The argument that everything's OK because it's free is a load of crud, because I'd rather pay to watch decent coverage. And Red Bull has enough money to do a good job - its part of their model, and they've done well before. I would say that they detracted from what was one of the greatest DH events ever.
  • + 1
