Always makes me laugh. Wind, torrential rain, and the crowd wearing full body midge protection. Surronded by "visit Scotland" adverts????
  • 32 2
You laugh but it works! My wife and I went 2 years ago (in April so the midges weren’t bad). We talk about going back for an extended trip or even moving to the highlands every single week.

  • 8 0
It is funny. But I visited Scotland for 2 weeks for my first time two years ago. Sun the the whole time and loved it!
  • 25 11
Wtf are riders still allowed to use tear offs for!?

They're banned at local and national events here, how the hell are they not banned at World Cup level!?
  • 3 1
@Philipthebiker: I pooped my pants and I was watching at home.
  • 15 12
 @excavator666: so they can see???

And I imagine the organizers clear the track after.
  • 43 21
@MonkeyBadgerBoy: Bollocks! There's absolutely no excuse for it.

There's enough rubbish lying around the countryside without watching pro riders discarding tear aways around the place as well. And don't try to say that they pick them all up, because they simply don't.

If kids see the pros doing it at WC level, then they're going to think it's ok to do it at local/national level.

Especially now that we have excellent roll off systems available, tear offs should be completely banned!
  • 25 5
@excavator666: ah man I hope you never go to a motocross race
  • 11 4
@excavator666: in fairness a lot of the riders weren't using tearoffs, they were using roll offs, but I totally agree tearoffs should be banned.
  • 15 5
@excavator666: the riders don't pick them up, but i imagine the organisers do.

Music festivals happen, rubbish is everywhere, they tidy it up. Not rocket science.

I'm sure they use tear offs as they are the optimum product to use in a sport where they risk their lives. Kids should ultimately get their guidance from their parents or adults that teach them.
  • 16 2
@MonkeyBadgerBoy: Yeah right 30mph winds. I doubt the organisers are skipping through the glens picking up the rubbish :-)
  • 2 0
I didn't get the waterproofs out on Saturday and didn't see a single midge net/jacket in the crowd all weekend. Granted, it rained today, but it dried up and we had one of the best mens finals I've seen for ages. Fort William still delivers.
  • 1 1
If someone did use tear offs....could be what took Gwin out?? It'd be like strapping a Crazy Carpet to your tire for that split second you're rolling across it....
  • 3 2
@SangamonTaylor: I actually find it kinda funny that you come from the country that has the Sierra Nevada mountains, all those amazing landscapes around Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. BC has some amazing terrain.

And you want to move to the Scottish Highlands lol
  • 11 7
@MonkeyBadgerBoy: The organisers will never be able to clean up all of the discarded tear offs. Who cleans up the tear offs when there are no organisers around to do it?

How many discarded tear offs littering the countryside is too many 1? 100? 1000?

Every missed tear off will lie in the countryside for hundreds of years until it's picked up and responsibly disposed of.

In the mean time they could be scattered God knows where by the wind or eaten by wildlife.

There is no comparison between pro/amateur MTB competitors littering and some pissed up music festival revellers and your comments on the issue are totally naive and misleading.

There is no excuse for the use of disposable tear offs in the current era where the problems associated with irresponsible plastic disposable are such a huge issue.

Especially when there is a completely viable alternative such as roll offs, disposable tear offs need to be banned from MTB now!
  • 9 5
@excavator666: So do something about it other than bitching on the internet? Write a letter instead of whining to your core internet group.

Yep, those tear-offs aren't going to be picked up. But pissing and moaning about it in the PB comments section won't accomplish anything. While you're at it, get granola bar wrappers banned as well.
  • 7 3
 @ssteve: I already am Stephen.

I run an anti-littering page on Facebook. I have also contacted both UCI and Fort William World Cup on Facebook, and am also currently drafting a letter to both of them.

When I piss and moan about something I do it properly.

  • 43 0
Exactly! Especially after Iles and Minnaar...absolutely crazy!
  • 32 2
That was pretty nuts. For sure everyone thought Brosnan had it after his heater of a run. I wanted to see Finn win his first WC or Minnaar his 8th ft bill win

However that ‘incident’ went down, no one here (the PB peanut gallery) has any clue about the stresses and dynamics of operating at their levels. I can’t fathom trying to race at those speeds, risking life and limb, all the while trying to manage the social media aspects. He’s a professional racer not a politician!

  • 18 0
Pretty insane looking crash at speed. The slow-mo looks like he missed the huge rocks. Hope he's ok, been having a rough last 1.5 years.
  • 13 10
It wasn't that bad of a crash; lots of drama but he rolled out of it well and missed all the rocks. I doubt he's in any worse shape because of it. I'm more worried for Siegenthaler
  • 3 0

  • 6 5
@src248: I think it's funny when someone can judge a person's condition based on video. So much can happen so quickly and from sometimes such seemingly insignificant impacts. I had a buddy that dove off the same dock as 5 other guys into water but landed with just enough of a tweak in his neck that he became paralyzed. I took a seemingly innocuous slow speed fall into soft sand and it shredded tendons in my thumb...I can go on and on with examples of "It wasn't that bad of a crash". The guy could've twisted his spine, so many other things.... He may be fine but why even make a prediction?
  • 7 0
@GlassGuy: Sure, obviously it's just speculation based on observation and a basic understanding of physics but again, not getting any medical attention and chatting with a camera man does seem to imply that he isn't "critically injured"
  • 4 0
@GlassGuy: From Gwin himself: "... stoked I'm okay and looking forward to next weekend." so he does seem to be okay, thankfully. (and Siegenthaler f*cked up her shoulder but says it's feeling better already so that's also good)

Fell asleep yesterday watching the Giro - Why does this sport not have more mainstream exposure? Watching a DH race on TV/internet is entertaining but if you watch a race live and see how steep/technical the track is coupled with the speed of the racers - to the uninitiated it will blow your mind!!!

  • 2 0

Yes, it was one of 3 UCI races Minnaar won in 2005 on the Honda.
  • 2 0
@dhmtbr777: yes, it was a UCI DH World Cup. Jared Graves on a Yeti ended up second and an American dude raced a homemade carbon 29er. And on the topic of prototypes, a lot of Vouilloz’s wins were on prototype Sunn bikes.

Made my first visit to Fort Bill in 2017, went again last year and was there again for this week. Difficult to imagine not making the trip now, the atmosphere is awesome, even when the weather is as wet as it’s been this week.
Gwin’s crash brought silence and disbelief to the crowd in the finish arena, every rider drew cheers from the masses and there were gasps aplenty as riders fought the track.
Amazing battles for podium places in both the Elite races.....just makes you want more.

Hannah was up and lost 3 seconds in the second to last split! Thought she was on for the win, Atherton must have been pinned in that split.

Excuse me what the hell Amaury!!!!!
  • 8 3
red bull is a joke. they list the top 3 RIGHT ON the video description. already knowing who wins ruins the whole experience. are they that stupid?
  • 8 0
Funny. I managed to see the rerun without knowing who won. I was only disappointed that Claudio let slip that Rachel won, because I saw the guys first. But Rob shushed him for it.

@mitochris: youre lucky! for the last 5 years ive been safe from spoilers. This year im 0/2. There is absolutely no hiding it if youre watching the replay from Redbull.
  • 1 0
@devo123: Agreed! This year it is not the same. Previously you could navigate the redbull website without spoilers, however, it is not the case anymore. I'm 1/2 the frist race was a total spoiler but was able to safely find round 2
  • 1 0
@mitochris: That's happened to me in the past. Now I watch them in order.
  • 3 0
Wicked race. A bit annoying with the venue PA in the background and clearly audible and giving away what was happening up the track. You could hear that Brosnan and Pierron were in front before the coverage even showed them.
  • 8 2
Live feed is brutal. No cameras for the first 3 min of the track. Wtf
  • 4 0
And now we don't know what happened to Gwin!
  • 16 0
Credit where credit is due - the live stream quality was very good comparatively. No drop-outs at all which is a big step up from previous years.
  • 7 0
It wasn’t so bad. They covered the crash pretty well
  • 6 0
They were able to get the woods section covered for the big guys.
  • 4 0
Every year they show all the riders on the pedal after the wall ride and the motorway section, would much rather see footage of the upper sections instead.
  • 1 0
I thought the same, but the weather was a bit turd for footage in the open. They have on previous years here had lots of footage from the top in good weather. @mluk2004:

When a top 5 is 7 seconds back. Holy shit
  • 8 1
 Troy, forever 2nd
  • 4 0
Was looking forward to seeing Katy Curd in the top ten - anyone know what happened..?
  • 3 0
Katy pushed too hard into a berm and washed out, in the open section at the top, I think. She was in a determined frame of mind, so I reckon we’ll see a different result in Leogang. I know Katy well and there’s no lack of desire.

Bringing up the topic again, good article about Kate Weatherly and her story:

I understand it´s a difficult topic and words are decisive. On this forum I read about brian Lopes being an a*shole, numerous jokes about Aaron Gwins faith and lots of insults on engeneering, people rinding any wheel size and so on.
But with the LBGT community I often think the amount of power and threatening people of to speak their mind is MASSIVE. The moment you have a discussion you seem to insult people (because it´s about their identitiy) and you can´t have another opinion on that. You are either ok with it or being banned.
You can not say that the athlete Kate Weatherly was formerly know as Anton? That´s where you threaten to delete my account? I´d say that´s the truth..?

posted something on Kate Weatherly with a link, got deleted; had from my point of view no insult or anything, but stated the former name of the athlete - can´t speak up if you are not mainstream opinion. Discussion obviously not welcome!

Can someone please explain the additional bits people are taping to their visors? Obviously it's for the mud/rain, but what's the theory?
  • 3 3
Keeps some of the mud on the goggles.
  • 7 0
It's specifically for the rain, stops a few extra drops from hitting your goggles. Doesn't help for the mud, fenders are there for that.
  • 4 0
@RideGuides: When riding through heavy rain/drizzle, it gives the rider an extra 'umbrella' of protection meaning the riders' goggles don't get so much direct rainwater falling on them.
