Final Results from EWS La Thuile 2021 Race 2

Jul 11, 2021
by Ed Spratt
Laura Charles was easily the fastest of the women and most of the men through the rock garden

The EWS is back for the second race of the week, riders will take on another four stages after they racing the Pro Stage. In the U21 racing, there were two clear winners today, Simonka Kuchynkova secured a lead of over 40 seconds on Sophie Riva and Luke Meier-Smith once again winning every stage.

For the Elite Women, it looked like Andreane Lanthier Nadeau was going to continue her success from the Pro Stage despite an injured ankle, but after a crash on the fourth stage and a puncture with another crash on her final run it was not to be. Instead, it was Harriet Harnden who laid down consistent results throughout the day and a huge win of nine seconds on the final stage and took her first Elite EWS win in La Thuile. Series leader Melanie Pugin finished up the day in second place keeping her lead in the overall standings.

Richie Rude and Jack Moir have been incredibly close all week and it was tight between the two riders in La Thuile today. A mistake on the fourth stage put Richie 12 seconds back making it difficult to take the lead back from Jack. With another first-place finish on the final stage, Jack Moir took his second win of the season.

The battle between Richie and Jack is just immense. It’s looking like this championship will go down to the wire!

Also impressive ride by Zak Johansen, biting at the heels of Richie and Jack on every stage so far (just saw stage 4 results come in while writing, where he actually came 2nd!)

Alright, you convinced me. I now hate everything everyone else likes. Well done, your persistence paid off.

In this round and the previous one, Moir was just behind Rude on the first outing and then dominated the second. I hope there's a pattern forming!

It’s good to see a more mixed crowd of women’s racing instead of the years of domination from Ravanal and Courdourier. Women’s EWS is definitely becoming harder and harder especially to break into that top 5

Racing after dislocating her ankle the day before - hard as nails.

100% agree, it’s interesting that the top 6 or 7 females are quite a bit faster than the rest of the women, in the next few years I think the times at the top will get tighter and tighter

Nice to Miranda moving up in the results, she puts in a ton of work and its starting to pay off!

Congrats to Harriet, first Brit to win in elites since Tracy Moseley if I'm not mistaken.

And one of T-Mo's many protégés as well.
I'd heard on the grapevine that she was riding very fast, but this is a fantastic achievement so soon.

@chakaping: Interesting both her and Ella Connolly have xc backgrounds (with harriet, amazingly, basically 50/50 between enduro and xc). and harriet's winning difference is always on the longer stages. shows perhaps more emphasis on fitness is key?

or am i taking two points and extrapolating the eiffel towe?

@johnny2shoes: I would be surprised if she wasn't the strongest on the pedals in the women's field, and I'd heard Trek had stuck with her because she was riding really fast overall. Looks like she might be the complete package.

Thinking about the pattern of Rude winning first race at each venue, Moir the second. Rude’s main experience is Enduro, going as fast as possible with very little practice. Moir has raced lots of DH, learning to build speed each run. Just a thought..,(obviously other factors - incl Moir being sick in Round 3).

Good observation. Fascinating to see how it plays out later in season and also if Martin can get on their pace.

Anyone know why Martin Maes not racing today ?

Was he racing there first two rounds?
  • 2 0
@mattg95: he missed the first two races due to birth of his child. He raced round 3 and was coming third but crashed on final stage

ALN! Tough luck, hopefully ankle I'd doing OK

Harriet dominates the physical uphill stages. She is also incredibly fast besides that

Great results for Harriet Harnden & Elliott Heap!

Stoked to see eat coast rider Rachel Pageau doing well, too! And just a few weeks after having a go at qualifying for DH world cups

How about Jackson Goldstone? Placing top 5 in junior EWS and in the last DH. He may be the next great racer…

Just use the Enduro World Series website it’s not hard

@mc-marshie69: I’ll check that out, but the whole point of a news aggregator is to easily find everything I want on one website.

Said it yesterday, but if Sam was to race 35+ Masters next season, he'd be destroying the field. Looking at this round's aggregate times, he'd have won by 3 minutes 6 seconds against a solid field.
  • 6 0
I'f it's just fitness and going back into pace, he will do it again. If he has the drive, he will be up there. Already improved on this one
  • 7 1
He’s current champion he’s hardly going to retire after a bad start to a weird season.
  • 10 0
He's not getting paid to race against a bunch of retirees.
  • 4 0
Sam has come back before and he can very likely do it again. He's probably just misjudged the level he needed to reach after a year and a half off.
  • 4 0
Hill was only 5% slower than Rude. But the field is getting stronger every season.
  • 5 0
His boss won't want the competition!
  • 3 0
Don't know why you got downvoted, you just stated a fact and a pretty neutral personal opinion.

He seems to be improving tho, slowly but surely. Based on pure bro-science, he looks to be in worse shape this year, and also moving a lot more on the bike, which for him is weird.
Also, one needs to realise how stacked the lineup is, looking at the top15 names any single one of those could podium. Any slight mistake or % point of lower fitness quickly throws a rider for to P30 or P40
  • 2 0
It would be great if there was a stacked Masters class with the likes of Nico, Barel etc - but I reckon Sam is still confident in his ability to compete for the win in Elite when he's in the right place physically and/or mentally.
  • 3 0
I'm still waiting for Sam to find his pace.

Yet another top 20 finish for Katy Winton and she's still unsigned. What a travesty.
