Final Results from the Fort William DH World Cup 2022

The second round of the 2022 downhill World Cup provided incredible racing at Fort William. In the Junior Women's racing Gracey Hemstreet backed up her Lourdes win with another sizeable victory at Fort William. A slow third split caused Phoebe Gale to lose her grasp on the lead and despite pulling back around three seconds on the last parts of the course she would have to settle for 2nd. Pinkbike Racing's Aimi Kenyon had an incredible run to cross the line only six seconds back and took third place. In an amazingly close race for such a long track Jordan Williams just pulled ahead of Jackson Goldstone by only 0.038 seconds. It looks like Jackson lost most of his time in the final split but both riders had runs that would have seen them in the top three in yesterday's qualifying. Remy Meier-Smith completed the top three and was the only rider to come within 12 seconds of the top two.

Nina Hoffmann takes her first Fort William win and the first victory here for Germany as she crosses the line over three and a half seconds up. Camille Balanche couldn't match the speed of Nina today but managed to have a clean run down the hill to second place and continues to hold the overall title lead. Myriam Nicole is still recovering from the effect of her concussion but secured third place. Amaury Pierron put down a huge run in the Elite Men's race to take his third back to back Fort William win and makes it two for two in 2022. Teammate Thibaut Daprela takes second place and Laurie Greenland comes within one second of the top time.

6:38 am PDT

Reece Wilson finishes his run in fifth place, just under two seconds off the top time so far.

Thibaut Daprela could be on a huge run as he is over two and a half seconds up at the first split!

6:51 am PDT

It's a crash for Ethan Craik at the top of the course.

6:54 am PDT

The top part of the course is looking slick as it is Kade Edwards who comes off the bike.

6:56 am PDT

Kade doesn't waste his run with some huge tricks on the motorway jumps.

6:59 am PDT

Luke Meier-Smith comes into the finish four seconds back but this is still good enough for 2nd place behind Thibaut Daprela.

7:02 am PDT

Angel Suarez goes into third place, 4.716 off the pace.

Trouble in the woods section destroys Matt Walker's lead but he manages to still end his run in 2nd, 1.458 behind.

7:10 am PDT

A crash for Luca Shaw at the wallride stops any chance of a podium.

7:19 am PDT

Danny Hart goes into fourth, 3.910 back.

7:21 am PDT

Loris Veriger lays down an amazing run pulling time back down the course but a mechanical puts him into fourth place.

2nd. Benoit Coulanges: +0.467

Bernard Kerr is another rider having issues and goes into 12th.

7:28 am PDT

Amaury Pierron beats his teammate and goes into the lead by nearly half a second!

7:32 am PDT

It won't be eight wins in Fort William for Greg Minnaar as he goes 3.9 seconds back and into sixth place.

7:36 am PDT

A few mistakes during his run puts Charlie Hatton in 14th.

7:37 am PDT

There is just Laurie Greenland left, can he stop Amaury Pierron from taking his third back to back Fort William win?

7:37 am PDT

Laurie Greenland is over a second up at split two. Amaury was very fast in the second half so he will have to keep this speed going.

7:37 am PDT

Laurie Greenland can't manage to keep up at the bottom and goes into third.

7:39 am PDT

Amaury Pierron wins in Fort William for the third time in a row and becomes the second Elite Male to win here three times.

Ben Cathro 24th well done in what looks like the worst condition wind wise I have ever seen at Fort William. Noodle arms is the man! A year or 2 ago he struggled to qualify, now jut of the top 20!!
  • 146 1
Absolutely mental, especially with running the team, filming the PB videos, etc. Ridiculous work ethic. Incredibly happy for him!
  • 54 0
@brianpark: just needs to spend some time on a bmx and he'll break the top 10
  • 11 0
@rcwellie: Cathro on 20s would be a sight to behold. Big man on a wee bike coming through!
  • 9 0
@aaronjb: go find the vids of Benners in his days riding for Orange on 26” wheels, the wee thing basically looked like a BMX with him on it haha
  • 15 0
I wonder how many tall World Cup racers were held back by the bikes of pre-2012. I'm sure if you asked Cathro he could tell you himself the bikes simply weren't large enough when he was a young lad racing WC. The advent of modern geo and 29" wheels seems like it has benefited tall guys like himself and Minaar over the last few years.
  • 4 0
obviously I don't mean to detract in the slightest from Cathro's success today, what an impressive finish that really proves he could have years left of racing hard if he so chooses. One of the sharpest racing minds around.

@ryanandrewrogers: do you really think 26" wheels held riders back? I raced guys well over 6' tall in BMX and I can tell you for certain the 20" wheels did not hold them back at all. Possibly poor sized frames but most top riders that were tall had custom xxl frames. So in short the answer is 0.
  • 8 0
@ryanandrewrogers: so they have a bmx background and they didn’t even know it? Damn.
  • 1 1
 ....
  • 6 1
@ryanandrewrogers: I have the same question, and wonder if the modern wheel size, which led to some of the contemporary geometry characteristics, has helped Minnaar extend his career, as an example.

It wasn't wheel size alone, as you said. The bikes themselves were tiny and some didn't suit tall riders particularly well.

I saw an analysis on rider height versus results a few years ago (possibly here?), which was interesting and, IIRC, supported the theory that riders over 5'11" were at a disadvantage.

Anecdotally, there are some very tall riders doing quite well these days.

@bashhard: with two thumbs it's easy to get down to 1/100th by trial and error. Once i hit 3/100th. Not a long time in between taps. I always wonder if .038 is even within the accuracy of the timing devices or if it's a jeopardy at some point.

Was there. Walking around first thing past the Pinkbike Racing enclosure, Aimi was having a grand old time, looked like the most relaxed person in Fort William! Was in the woods for her run, proper committed in conditions that did for a lot of riders, amazing result for her. Then came Cathro. Was at the bottom this time, it went crazy. We and everyone around us going nuts. Brilliant result. Can't wait to watch it back tonight. Credit to the whole team.

Feel bad saying I enjoy when Kaos or Kade have a small crash in the finals... And we all get a free slopestyle run on a world cup track.

Unclipping on the motorway and throwing a no foot can at Ft Bill? Ya love to see it.
  • 22 2
Just goes to show the unbelievable level that the top TOP boys are riding at, Vergier, Pierron etc…Kade Edwards is a crazy talented rider yet he can’t hold a candle to them. Absolutely no dig at Kade, one of the very few riders about that could kick it at Rampage (only a matter of time) and race world cups, but just highlighting how f*cking good the top riders are.
  • 3 0
@markcorrigan: ya, his quali was nearly 10 off the time Amaury put down. and presumably, pushing to gain back that ten is what caused him to hit the dirt.

those frenchies made a massacre of the brits today. was really pullin for Loz to back up his qualies pace. he actually went a touch slower in finals which i think had a lot of weather to play a part. being less than a second off, as tiny as loz is, and in that wind is rough.
  • 15 1
Kade also won an informal game of b.i.k.e. last year at Audi Nines, including calling out tricks that he’d never done before and then stomping them. I think it was on Sam Reynolds’ channel but maybe also Pilgrim and/or Brendog
  • 9 0
He did that about 6ft above my head. It took me a while to register what had just happened as it was so out of place in a World Cup race.
  • 16 1
Hell trek probably feels the same as you. They will get more screenplay from that run compared to if he had stayed upright
  • 4 2
@adrennan: absolutely, i mean even a top level racer isn't going to have the same reach as a top level free rider. i haven't seen any racer really reach outside of the mtb world aside from maybe aaron and even tahnee.

but i have mad respect for the 'free racers'. BrenDog really set a pace for that concept. But I wonder who is the best racer ever that actually has tricks in the bag. lotta the top dudes look pretty stiff from years of race scrubbing jumps lol
  • 1 0
 @lepigpen: youtu.be/JAluNixCbeA

Those "stiff" jumps are just about searching for the limit on how fast you can actually hit a jump without massively overshooting and screwing up your race run.
  • 3 0
@hirvi: yes, i grew up BMX racing. my point is when its time to have fun and let loose... how loose can they get. there are racers like Kaos and Kade... and then there are... racers that win lol.

When Pierron is healthy with no injuries he's unstoppable. What a dude. Also it's 2022 and bike component manufacturers still can't make chains and chainguides that will serve their intended purpose for 5 minutes without disintegrating and ruining someone's world cup race result.
  • 38 1
Drive trains represent the biggest room for complete re-engineering with our bikes today.
  • 13 0
@snomaster: I don't think there is any detriment to a gearbox DH bike, especially if one were to develop a dh-specific box with a short range, smaller form factor, & less mechanical drag. WC racer mechanicals would drop dramatically and it would be so much easier to service & maintain if you are an average DH bike user. WC racers already put lead weight low in the bike for handling, why not reduce unsprung weight while re-allocating that weight to the bottom bracket where it benefits the bike the most?
  • 1 0
@ryanandrewrogers: What about shifting under load? I'd guess that is something WC racers do a lot.
  • 2 2
@Ttimer: Electronic shifting can fix that.

  • 1 0
 @MysticMCyclist: that frame, wow!
I'm not convinced that gear boxes are the answer yet. I feel like it's possible to have a more simple, readily accessible solution...
To me, the most obvious design flaw is the hanging derailleur.
Is it this way just to support large range cassettes?
What if we only needed 4 or 5 gears?
Is there a way to ditch the hanger for a mechanism more like our old front derailleurs? I don't care if the cassette is up front or rear...
  • 3 0
@snomaster: front, crank mounted cassettes can't shift under tension, like old 2 by and 3 by drivetrains.

The closest thing you'll find is either this m.pinkbike.com/news/first-look-lal-bikes-supre-drive-splitting-a-derailleur-in-half-before-it-happens-on-the-trail.html (which I think would be excellent with a dh narrow range cassette) or this www.instagram.com/reel/CWKKvQVFxEL
  • 2 0
@Mcbellamy: And a high pivot 10years ago, such a sick bike!
  • 1 0
@hamncheez: WC racers spend a lot of time not pedaling, the advantage of a gearbox is shifting without pedaling at all. DH racers would no longer have to load-shift while sprinting out of a corner, instead, they can shift pre-corner the way racecar drivers do. No mechanical loss/ potential snapped chains to shifting derailleur under the load of a full-tilt sprint. But sure, cling to derailleurs as if they haven't failed us all over and over again.
  • 1 0
@ryanandrewrogers: Then why has a gearbox never been successfully raced? Plenty of people race without a drivetrain sponsor.

  • 6 1
I'd been hoping for more development from Tracey but indeed this was not a strong effort. If one were looking elsewhere, I would propose Emilie Siegenthaler should at lest have a go. She has a lot of history in the sport, is well connected to current racers and is articulate in podcasts. Failing that they'd have to get Rachael Atherton, who was excellent at HardLine in 2019, but then they'd have to schedule the races around baby Arna's nap times.
  • 12 4
I found her to be more informative than Claudio. Yes, everyone is strong in her book, but she did in fact bring some recent results and past performance on the Fort William track into the commentary. I think that some people simply don't like the tone of her voice more than anything.

  • 35 2
As an Aussie I’m a bit bias, but seriously the Meier-Smith brothers just fly under the radar, And deserve so much more credit and publicity! Remy is a consistent top 3 guy in both DH and the Enduro scene and never seems to get any fan fare, and his older Brother is on the verge of being a consistent top 15 guy now, and again never gets much a mention..

Gutted for Dak - he was in a heater of a run
  • 16 0
Bummed for both Dak and Luca. Dak was hauling and had some creative lines I didn't see anyone else attempting. I wish Intense could get him on a polished bike with some legit *redacted* rubber underneath.
  • 8 1
Yeah man. Wife and I both screamed at the TV when Dak went down. Was on such a good run....
  • 23 0
The drone shot on the motorway section is great
  • 3 0
I was hoping the pilot would just go "f*ck it!" on the last run and follow Greenland all the way through to the finish.
  • 21 1
Nina ya legend, what a run!
  • 19 1
Big up for the water droplet in the middle of the camera of the flat section. The fpv drone footage is pretty sick thought
  • 18 1
There will be a few headaches in the Syndicate camp tomorrow morning Smile ))

@ice29 Having won with Nina in Women's Elite I doubt it. It was worse for Mucoff last year at Snowshoe with Pierron, Daprela and Nicole out.
  • 11 1
@Rosstech: Hm, I guess you should look for studies that show a correlation between the amount of Scottish beer/whisky drunk in the evening and headaches in the morning…

@ice29 No, I don't drink alcohol. They have done a second place with Jackson, a third with Laurie and a first with Nina, if their head hurts it will be because they celebrated it. :-)
  • 5 0
@ice29 I may have misunderstood your comment. Excuse me and greetings.
  • 2 1
@Rosstech: that’s literally the point of the initial statement, they will have been drinking Scotland dry, hence the headaches.
  • 2 1
@Rosstech: I'm surprised you had time to comment considering you moved from Wales to Spain overnight.
  • 1 0
I am Spanish, I have always lived in Spain, I have been in Wales for work. Greetings.
  • 17 1
Redbull "Rider of the Day" vote is cooked. Nina wins the race and isn't even voted into the top 3.
  • 2 0
I do find it a bit odd to be honest. It has been off for a couple of events now
  • 18 2
 Ben Effin Cathro!!!!!!!
  • 15 1
really bad coverage of Nina's run, only the boring parts
  • 2 0
I overslept and the replay isn't up yep but I'm stoked for Nina1
  • 14 0
 NINA! SYNDICATE!
  • 23 10
 No Elliot= No insights.
  • 28 2
No insights cuz there is almost no track shown. It jumps from the start hut to almost 4 min in. We barely get to see a damn thing on the actual track other than the motorway.
  • 2 1
@wilsonians: The problem with relying on drone coverage - they don't work too well in sideways rain.
  • 4 0
Yes! Want more Elliot. Rob and Claudio is such a stale combo, having new voices in the booth with more recent race experience had been so good. Elliot is a breath of fresh air that's sorely needed.
  • 16 5
The red bull feed....start hut...3:31 into a run. That's disgraceful to call that 'live' coverage.
  • 11 1
Wait til next without redbull and let’s see what we get… behind a paywall
  • 10 2
It how else can you do it when racers start at 30 second or 1 minute intervals (or whatever it is) on a 5 minute track? Otherwise the coverage just becomes 5 hours long.
  • 6 2
That is literally the only way to show it live! the race runs overlap otherwise it would take 12 hours.
  • 3 0
@Rickos: I get that but at least show the interesting bits. I.e pinball and woods. The motorway is trash except for the finish line.
  • 4 1
@Rickos: Drop the preshow and you have extra 40-50 minutes to show actual riding. There's a start for you.

Also, I would not mind watching finals for 4-5h if it meant actually seeing all the important and interesting bits of the track, and more riders. It's bike porn, there's never too much of it Big Grin Even without the commentary (or commentary just for the last 30 people). That is something I really miss from the freecaster days. What RB does, is many times they end up not showing the winning run, because the rider qualified far back and started before the live feed.
  • 3 0
 @Rickos:

It's a solved problem. Watch world cup skiing or any or any other serious individual race and you'll see the broadcast shows partial runs like this for most of the field to save time, but full runs for the top contenders. I watched this whole race and still have no idea what half the course looks like. It's absurd to not shown even one single full run. That would've only added two minutes to the broadcast.
  • 2 1
@snomaster: Paywall aside, I fully expect Discovery / Eurosport to find a few ways to improve the quality of the coverage and run a tighter ship. RB have done an OK job, but they are far from perfect.
  • 9 1
Pierron 3 for the last 3 fort bill world cups and 2 for 2 races this year is insane. Great to see him back in form after two difficult years
  • 11 1
Too bad for Vergier, only 2.5 back and he was chainless for the bottom 1/3.
  • 5 1
Really enjoyed watching the race, some take aways: experience no doubt plays a huge part on this challenging course, so that makes me all the more impressed with those Canadian racers who have travelled across the globe to race here. Well done guys and girls !
  • 9 1
Drone footage is getting better each round.
  • 6 1
1st in training and qualifying but 3rd in final... The pressure of being in my fantasy team must have got to Laurie Greenland Shouldn't have told him
  • 6 0
Fearon's pace on the Dreadnought was gnarly! Brutal track conditions for 154mm and flats.
  • 5 0
Walker was on an amazing time before his mistake in the woods before the drop. Weird noise from his bike though - mudguard rubbing or something?
  • 5 1
BEN CATHRO on the podium....early on. But Redbull.tv started coverage 2 riders after his podium run. Bet he is happy, I sure was!
  • 5 0
Kade deserves bonus points for my fantasy team just for the tricks he pulled!!!
  • 2 0
I'm assuming the juniors course was the same as mens/womens, so reading those results for mens, Jordan Wms & Jackson G would've placed 4 & 6th respectively. Or... did they have different tracks? Since Redbull doesn't even bother showing maybe the top 3-5 men/wom's junior races, I dunno. No clue why these guys don't even get 10-15 mins total coverage in the main program. They're obviousy all shredders.
  • 6 2
Hoping our new streaming partner next year televises the juniors. Or at least a recap. Oh and show us qualies too.
  • 3 0
Did anyone else hear the god awful noise that Matt Walker's bike was making the whole run down? Didn't slow him down but curious what it would have been.
  • 2 1
Juniors would be 2nd and 3rd compared to elite qualifying. Gonna be interesting to see what elite finals are. But Jordan and Jackson are gonna be great to watch. Would love a career long rivalry like many top juniors before them.
  • 3 2
Discovery will offer full coverage of the entire season inc qualifying and a bigger focus in the woman’s racing giving more air time than it currently has ,the team they have so far will ensure the transition is not only seemless but should give more focus on the sport as it will be aired several times after the main live event .
So you need not worry
  • 6 1
Great result for fearon on a trail bike!

 BRING BACK ELLIOT, PLEASE!
I just could not listen about "conserving energy" and "landing at the sweet spot" anymore... He had no insights, only kept coming back to the same stuff.
Also, Elliot is much more lighthearted and fun.
  • 14 0
@genovvv: idk tracey wasn't incredible today either. no diss, its a new role for her, but after racing alongside all these people for years you'd think there would be more to say than "strong rider" for each racer that drops.
  • 6 0
@genovvv: Do people actually think this? Am I completely insane for not coming close to being able to understand this opinion??
  • 3 0
@jayacheess: I think she's getting better. She was poor when she first started, but everyone has to start somewhere.
  • 12 7
 @chmurka3rg: Nooooo

I don't want to listen to a guys giggling all the time during races.
  • 2 0
Elliot is great at color commentary...can become alittle monotone and so the Rob has to talk over and spit out some excitement as it happens.
  • 4 2
@chmurka3rg: Claudio: "the rider will have lost some time with that little mistake"
* rider goes 2s up *
  • 1 0
Intense has bikes that they have no plans to actually produce. Why can others not make a prototype gearbox bike and not have to worry about chain and driveline issues? This race could have been different if they had one
  • 2 0
Hi, does anyone know what happened to Ryan Pinkerton? I'm a fan of him. Greetings.
  • 4 2
So my fantasy male riders are Vernon, Vidal, Norton, Edwards... That did not work out too well.
  • 2 0
Dak is a smart pick for fantasy because he's not as pricey as a top guy but always has a chance to win or place. I'm keeping him on my roster.
  • 2 0
Does anyone know how Neko Mullaly did? Been following his Frameworks project and hoping for a measure of his success.
  • 2 0
 He didn't qualify.

7 out of the top 15 elite men are French and 5 British!!
  • 7 4
There's so much more money in the sport there, and has been for a long time. There's such a big audience. Here in Canada there's decent participation in the sport, but not that big an audience. It also doesn't help almost all the events are in Europe.
  • 5 0
@Fill-Freakin: also BC cup is $150 (registration + lift) and french cup in 40 ...
  • 4 3
The difference is the French win and the Brits scrape onto the podium
  • 5 0
The reason is called TFJV. A séries of compétitions for kids who are in mountain bike club in France.
Doing xc , trial and downhill on the same compétition.....best way to catch talent!
  • 2 0
@Fill-Freakin: Not crazy money, i used to have a French FFC licence and did a few competitions, it is cheap, bike parks are cheap in France like 230 euros for the Portes du soleil season pass. Also as a local I have free pass and good prices.
  • 5 0
@Ba1rog: Do you get a discount because you scare all the orcs away?
  • 2 0
@iamamodel: Nice one, I do have a free season pass at the Moria bikepark hahaha.

  • 5 1

  • 3 1

  • 3 0
1st and 2nd Junior would be at P5 and 6 in Elites ! Pretty impressive
  • 3 1
Would have placed 2nd & 3rd in Elite qualifying!
  • 2 0
The difference between Jordan and then 3rd and 4th place is insane
  • 1 0
And the difference between Jordan and Jackson is insane, but in a different way.
  • 3 1
Loris tongue out and greasy looking mustache. Haha
  • 1 1
That was such a fun race to watch! I agree that the Juniors should be televised as well, it would be great to encourage younger riders if we had more "youth" coverage.
