Final Results from the Les Gets DH World Cup 2021

Jul 3, 2021
by Ed Spratt
Micalya Parton drops out of the calm of the start gate and heads towards to the carnage of the forest below.

The results are in from the second round of the 2021 DH World Cup in Les Gets after an incredible day of racing in some tough conditions.

Kicking off the day was the Junior Men with Jackson Goldstone securing his first World Cup win by over one and a half seconds. Jackson's winning time was nearly five-second faster than Loic Bruni's top qualifying time from yesterday. We will be in for some wild racing if these conditions hold through the day. Jordan Williams takes the second step of the podium after qualifying fastest yesterday and Lachlan Stevens-McNab continues with his success this year with third place.

The Junior Women's racing saw another new World Cup winner as Phoebe Gale pulled a two-second lead over Izabela Yankova. Phoebe's winning time was nearly 30 seconds faster than her fastest qualifier from yesterday. Closing out the top three riders was Anastasia Thiele crossing the line over 14 and a half seconds back.

There was plenty of drama in the Elite Women's racing with rain falling for all of the riders, conditions were very different to the drier conditions from qualifying. Tahnee Seagrave bested the course with a close contest against Myriam Nicole. Second-placed Myriam Nicole had a tough run today after a crash just after split two, but she closed the gap to only 0.252 seconds. Camille Balanche finished off the top three riders with another great result in 2021. Vali Höll was cursed with another finish line crash as she slipped out on the final turn and had to run across the line.

Tricky conditions affected most of the men's racing as the track became slicker with each run. Thibaut Daprela, who was coming back from a horrific crash at the French Cup last week, took the win today in the Elite Men's racing. His victory in Les Gets is Thibaut's first-ever Elite win after coming so many close attempts since moving up from Juniors last year. Max Hartenstern secured his best result with a second-place finish and Baptiste Pierron wrapped up the podium in third place.

Check out the full results below.

The Elite Women's racing is now underway with Agnes Delest setting the first time of 4:32.787.

With ten riders left in the Elite Women's field, the current top five are:

1st. Mariana Salazar: 4:32.721

5th. Lauryne Chappaz: 4:54.916

We have just heard on the Red Bull broadcast that Nina Hoffmann will not be racing today after a crash in practice.

It looks like Emilie Siegenthaler must have had some problems in the first split as she is over 12 seconds back. With some light rain on the course at the moment, things could start to get tricky out there today.

Mille Johnset has an amazing run as she goes over 16 seconds up and takes the lead.

A flat out ride from Tahnee Seagrave places her in the lead by five seconds. We are now less than three seconds off the top qualifier of Myriam Nicole despite the changing conditions.

With five riders left in the Elite Women's field, the current top five are:

1st. Tahnee Seagrave: 4:10.566
2nd. Mille Johnset: 4:16.102
3rd. Mathilde Bernard: 4:26.551
4th. Mariana Salazar: 4:32.721
5th. Agnes Delest: 4:32.787

Monika Hrastnik crosses the line six and a half seconds back and into third place.

As the rain gets heavier Eleonora Farina manages to keep up a great pace on the slippy track to slot into fourth place with three more riders left.

Camille Balanche has a dramatic run and finishes 4.914 back from Tahnee's top time.

Vali Höll is only three and a half seconds back at split two. Tahnee had a slower end to her run so we may see Vali take back some time at the bottom.

Vali Höll crashes out on the last turn and loses a ton of time to drop to sixth place.

Myriam Nicole was only 0.181 back at split two but she crashes just after. Can she recover and pull back some time before the finish line?

Myriam has closed the gap to 0.849 after a crash, she could still take the win today.

Tahnee Seagrave wins in Les Gets as Myriam just falls short of victory by 0.252 seconds.

The top five Elite Women are:

1st. Tahnee Seagrave: 4:10.566

5th. Kade Edwards: 3:37.059

Baptiste Pierron lays down a great run but he loses a lot of time at the bottom to cross the line 0.104 seconds back.

Mark Wallace comes just 0.365 second behind Hartenstern. The track is starting to look pretty tricky with some loose conditions.

Troy Brosnan is in touch at split two, only 0.558 behind.

A big crash for Troy Brosnan before split three loses a lot of time before he is back on the bike. The track is very different to the conditions in qualifying. Troy crosses the line back in 11th place.

Matt Walker looked to be on a great run before losing over two seconds in the last section of the track.

With 20 Elite Men still to go the current top five are:

1st. Max Hartenstern: 3:35.840
2nd. Baptiste Pierron: 3:35.944
3rd. Connor Fearon: 3:36.014
4th. Mark Wallace: 3:36.205
5th. Dean Lucas: 3:36.854

Thibaut Daprela is back from his huge crash last week and has found over a second at the second split.

Thibaut extends his lead to three seconds at the third split!

Thibaut Daprela goes fastest by over two seconds!

A massive crash for Ed Masters just after the second split. He is back on the bike now and making his way down the course.

Andreas Kolb has a wild run on the grass at the bottom of the track as he just barely misses the spectators in a huge slide.

Greg Minnaar can't match Daprela and goes over three seconds back.

A big crash just before split three as the back wheel on Luca Shaw's bike slips out in a turn.

With 10 Elite Men still to go the current top five are:

1st. Thibaut Daprela: 3:33.424
2nd. Max Hartenstern: 3:35.840
3rd. Baptiste Pierron: 3:35.944
4th. Connor Fearon: 3:36.014
5th. Mark Wallace: 3:36.205

After a loose run Bernard Kerr crosses the line just over six seconds back and into 16th.

Benoit Coulanges makes a few mistakes on the slick track and finishes his run in 27th place.

With 5 Elite Men still to go the current top five are:

1st. Thibaut Daprela: 3:33.424
2nd. Max Hartenstern: 3:35.840
3rd. Baptiste Pierron: 3:35.944
4th. Connor Fearon: 3:36.014
5th. Mark Wallace: 3:36.205

It looks like Danny Hart has had some big problems at split one as he goes over 14 seconds back.

Danny Hart goes into 55th, 34 seconds behind Daprela.

A massive crash on the creek jump from Reece Wilson. We hope he is not seriously hurt as he gets back on his bike to complete his run.

Loris Vergier is another rider that can't match Daprela, with two more racers to go it is looking like an unbeatable time.

Angel Suarez gets caught off line and goes down in the third split. Only Loic Bruni can stop Thibaut Daprela from taking his first Elite World Cup win.

Loic Bruni loses a ton of time at the top of the course as he lands to flat on the first drop.

Thibaut Daprela wins his first Elite World Cup in Les Gets!

So glad Reece was able to get up after that crash. That looked so gnarly
  • 18 0
 That was wild to watch.
  • 8 0
surprised no one bit it on the wood gap at the end coming out of that fast, wet off-camber grass section. A few one-footed sends had me wondering if someone was gunna go off
  • 7 0
One word for that run: LOOSE
  • 14 0
I literally screamed watching that. Can’t believe he got up that quick. Such an amazing run up until that.
  • 11 3
sooo scary, thank god for slippery grass to disperse the impact. The crowds running away from his and Kolb's close call reminded me of the old rally clips. What a wild race!
  • 2 1
@lastminutetech: one guy did earlier on. Never made it onto the wood.
  • 3 1
@BenPea: Kolb did go sideways before and managed to save it when running off track
  • 4 0
@Lagr1980: you're right, he didn't go down. That section looked nasty from every angle. Every time someone made it over was a relief. There was enough incident to make it a good day. They were all over the place. And so many saves today. Random as f*ck race.
  • 17 4
I just wanna say thanks for not having Claudio, so nice to have positive and smart commentators only for once
  • 2 0
It almost looked fun? He was in a full on Superman and front rolled out the landing. Way to make the best of the situation!
I’m so glad I got up early to watch the rowdiness today.
  • 3 0
The next Sunday Saves is just gonna be a compilation of runs from Les Gets
  • 147 0
So the crazy step-down that took out heaps of riders in practice... doesn't have a camera at it?
  • 38 0
Yeah this is really disappointing. It’s the best feature for spectators and it’s just erased from coverage!
  • 25 0
@llaama: especially when it was going to define the womans race. Jump it and be competitive.
  • 2 3
@Jack20: Do we know if any of them did the jump on the race?
It could be that the organization wasn't expecting the women to send it and discarded that angle, to be confirmed if the men's race has a camera there
  • 2 0
@Arierep: based on the first split I believe only tahnee and myriam jumped it. Vali might have. Would have been nice to know for sure. Would have been rad to watch the 2 that sent it!
  • 1 0
 @Arierep: I hope so
  • 17 1
Well, guess I was wrong and Redbull in fact sucks at camera placement
  • 26 0
@Arierep: No kidding. No idea what that fixed-angle camera at the tame double halfway down was supposed to show us. Should've been put at the road gap.
  • 5 0
Yup, came here to find out what happened to/at that road gap.. not a single mention of it in the coverage I think. Maybe most chose to go around, especially once the track starting getting slimy.
  • 19 0
Agreed. What the hell is RedBull thinking. It was THE feature to cover. They even ignored it on the track preview. I thought that it had perhaps been excluded from the race for safety. So weird.
  • 5 2
Maybe they did not want to stream how someone breaks his neck there.
  • 9 5
camera placement sucks! I want my money back...oh wait
  • 9 1
@Spindelatron: so you cant criticize anything you havent paid for?
  • 1 4
It has to be a technical broadcast problem decision. Tv engineers use unlicensed radio links to beam down live footage from the camera stands, and bad weather in mountain terrain breaks up the signal. So with rain predicted, the crew was brought down the hill. Tv engineers have no idea about what makes good DH tv, they are only paid to think about image quality.
  • 2 1
Was thinking the same, what a bunch of morons. I watched 7 minutes of people casing it on YouTube 3 days ago. Why wouldn't you have a cam on the biggest feature you freaking buttholes!
  • 2 0
Just out of curiosity, was I downvoted just for merely suggesting that the women's field was sending the gap at a lower frequency?? As if there was anything wrong with that, I wouldn't send it either.
If this was the case, I really worry for people's relationship with reality
  • 2 5
Please everyone read this to understand how the cameras work. We watch the rider out of the gate, and given the length of the track this is not live (impossible since there are two riders on track when times are greater than 3 minutes). Then the cameras pick up wherever the rider is and it's live. It's probably too much to place cameras at good spots and try to put a full run together piecing a bunch of recorded clips together to eventually catch back up to the rider where they actually are. It's been like this for years; once you understand it, please stop complaining.
  • 4 0
Bullshit the video of that section was epic all week, took out many riders and rims. They didn't talk about that section the whole race or do any analysis. Show me video of the lake up top , please.
  • 4 1
@up-left-down-right: Just because you don't; follow the sport doesn't mean you shouldn't be professional.
I actually shot for Red Bull media house in the past covering hip hop content which I can't stand but I still did my research so that I knew who/ what was important or going to make compelling footy.
  • 1 2
@Dustfarter: So were all these Red Bull hip hoppers, rapping on the side of a french mountain, in the rain, at elevation? No? Then your comment is absolutely irrelevant. …. Lots of dull tools, in the PB shed this week.

Reece Wilson was on an absolute heater of a run before that crash! He’s improved so much over the last year, it’s great to see.
  • 17 0
We may never see his world champs run but watching him in the stump section 2 wheel drifting and splitting the big stump between his wheels was wild.
  • 15 1
 He was looking god-like.
  • 13 0
That run was absolutely incredible. The creativity and commitment coming together in those conditions was something to behold. Stoked he seems to be OK.
  • 76 1
No road gap coverage in the men’s either???!! You had one job to do Red Bull
  • 12 1
especially choosing some camera views lower down instead which are mostly obscured by trees
  • 19 1
@gmcc: you mean that one 10 foot gap they kept showing wasn't the most exciting thing to watch?!
  • 6 1
@adrennan: I know right!!! That 10 foot gap really got my motors running Big Grin
  • 6 0
tuned in and couldn't quite believe it. weren't these big jumps that have made their way into dh in recent years meant to be for the tv coverage?

  • 31 6
 Much prefer him to Claudio
  • 7 1
 @melonhead1145: Way better than Claudio!
  • 3 1
His laughter might be hard to bear, but he brings a lot of insight to the table.
  • 2 0
100% agree. More insight, facts and figures, and less grating. Sorry Claudio.
  • 7 1
I can live with Elliot, Claudio, Tracey, Tippie, Mark Jackson, whoever. Just gotta have Rob.
  • 1 1
@acali: Yeah, Warner is a given. I won't watch without Warner. That's like F1 without Crofty.
  • 2 2
Elliot is a super nice guy but his commentary was putting me to sleep. Bring back Claudio!

Reece Wilson tho. He's incredible in wet conditions. Crash was terrifying

@LouWeed: His Mother was a Mudder?

  • 48 4
In the deteriating weather. I feel like Kerr was crazy fast. He's basically the only one who placed well after Daprela - but went late enough to get real shitty conditions.
  • 39 1
Minnaar in 7th took time from Daprela in some sections, he'd be my 'best of the rest' today.
  • 48 4
Is Daprela even human? The man disintegrates his face and bites his tongue off and wins a world cup 4 days later. This is science fiction. Absolute insanity.
  • 1 0
Apologies for the accidental negative props...
  • 57 14
Another disappointing race due to weather. Congrats to Deprela for his first win and the rest of the podium. But the real winner is Kerr best place out of the top 10 in 16th, cannot be disappointed in that.
  • 65 1
 Mannar in 7th tho
  • 3 0
 @nige-dh: exactly
  • 8 1
@nige-dh: you could argue either but Mannaar qualifies outside the top 10, just depends on how far down you want to go. You could argue that Kerr had a worst course than Minnaar as he started 10 minutes before Kerr, who was over 30 minutes after Deprela.
  • 9 0
I agree, it did seem like it was raining harder for Kerr than Minnaar. Conditions definitely got considerably worse as the race went on @lawnjockey:
  • 6 1
Seems like when they see there's likely weather, they oughta just move up the start time. Such sick riding, but it's a bummer when you don't really get a fair race.
  • 5 1
@nige-dh: yah minnaar won the day in the rain. What a machine
  • 14 0
The commitment of Bernard was unreal
  • 6 0
Both Minnaar and Kerr were absolutely killing it. Minnaar making it look sort of smooth even in these conditions was unreal, though ...
  • 3 0
Dude - Kade Edwards first top-10
  • 41 2
Another rained out top 20 guys. Nothing to take away from Deprela, but no one had a shot in the same conditions. It got muddier and slicker with each rider.
  • 14 3
Absolutely Daprella put down a scorcher of a run, and he absolutely deserves it. But I doubt he would've won if the conditions weren't so atrocious.
  • 41 4
Really bad redbull coverage this one. Also, I think Gwin is done. He doesn’t seem to have anymore fire or drive. Racing simply for Intense exposure. Announcers seem to realize it as well and are largely ignoring him.
  • 84 0
Seeing Gwin falling off the ever increasing pace gives you even more respect for what Minnaar continues to do. His run today was among the best and he somehow finds a way to continue to get faster as the young guys keep pushing the game to the next level. Mind blowing in these conditions. The GOAT was getting after it while Gwin looked like he had thrown in the towel from the start.
  • 8 6
@DubC: I think the Intense bike just doesn't have it. I hope his investment pays off. In the past, Intense hasn't had a good track record for sales and the like. Does anybody ride them outside of SoCal?
  • 13 0
@chezotron: nothing to do with the bike IMO. Especially considering he has the ability to build it anyways he likes.
  • 6 3
Lol I said this last race and was downvoted to death.
  • 7 0
@chezotron: don't blame the bike custom built for gwin. He won on a stock specialized a few times lol
  • 15 0
@chezotron: it’s not the bike. Izak L is freaking welding parts on his bike in between practice and qualis and still qualifying around gwin.
  • 3 0
Minnaar is just insane, he makes it look so easy too.
  • 2 0
@chezotron: I don't even see them in socal
  • 4 0
Agree, he’s become a mid-pack afterthought amidst the new titans. From his highs, I didn’t really expect to see it. Assumed he’s still be a contender and make the decision to hang it up before totally losing his edge but like any athlete, this is his living.
  • 5 0
@makripper: Was a downvoter now I am a believer, really poor weekend for him... from a guy that can ride in the wet (MSA 2017).
  • 2 1
@Frontrange: They are bound to the VPP designs though. He does well on a single pivot. Maybe it was just an ill fated move. Maybe the fire isn't there? Tough to say but Les Gets was a sh*t show anyhow.
  • 3 0
@gramboh: yeah that's the wild thing. He was on another level at that race.
  • 2 0
@chezotron: I dunno... I want to believe he was playing it safe with the rain but I don't believe it. We'll see what happens next month but I'm betting this is his last year racing. Or at least I hope it is if his results don't improve. Hate it when the guys that were once on top don't know when it's time to call it quits. I think he can still be relevant outside of the being a racer. Would be cool to see him run a team even.
  • 2 0
@Frontrange: yeah even Sam hill was still near the top when he threw in the towel. When he stopped racing world cups it had only been a couple seasons of not winning consistently. He was slowly sliding down the list
  • 3 0
@Frontrange: Gwin started 6 minutes after Thibault's winning run yet was 12.8s off pace. Brutal.
  • 1 1
@Frontrange: like Mik Hannah? Blenki? Fairclaw? I'd rather have them there, even just as luxury ornaments. If they qualify, they've earned their spot.
  • 1 2
Gwin is certainly not on the pace with the top guys atm but didn't you guys realize that the track was deteriorating by the weather minute by minute? In dry or at least the same conditions for everyone these results would have dramatically different. Gwin wouldn't have won but in conditions like these later starting riders know that its next to impossible to beat the riders that started in dryer conditions. So you either play it safe or push the limit and risk a crash. Gwin surely became way slower but this race isn't really a great marker for that.

Totally stoked!! I hope he's here with Warner all season!! Or am I talking about a different Jackson? LOL

And Tahnee got from the top to the bottom in less time than Myriam. Is it clear now that what Tahnee did does indeed constitute a win?

@bocomtb: it’s not a win in the same sense as someone failing to show for a finals bout. I’d be asking myself some serious questions if I was Tahnee like how the f*ck did someone get within such a tight margin after falling if I had delivered a really good run.

She acknowledged it was a poor run after her race.

Can barely hear Elliot Jackson’s commentary during the race run. #RedbullTV please turn up his mic.
  • 20 3
Yeah and the crowd sound is too loud, it's even saturating sometimes.
  • 37 11
And fuck those guys with bloody too loud chainsaws and vuvuzelas.
  • 14 16
@Archimonde: It is Red Bull's responsibility to have the correct sound mix. Their chainsaws and vuvuzelas are no louder in Les Gets than anywhere else. Someone somewhere should be balancing that out. So maybe don't be so quick to say f*ck those guys
  • 67 4
@mccarthyp: Sure, there are two problems. Sound mix (could have been better I guess, but I applaud the RB guys as they really are pros), and there are still those chainsaws.

They are so loud that they drown out any other sound and you're left behind with that buzzing noise which is terrible to hear on the broadcast, and even worse if you're spectator.

I witnessed this first hand couple of times, and it almost ruined the better part of experience of spectating WC DH. There are just no positive sides to it. The whole mountain will resonate with that noise, you cannot talk to anyone if you're nowhere near those, they drown out the even loud, passionate fans, cause headaches, and actually can cause hearing loss as they put those trumpet ends on them to make them even louder.

And I will repeat myself: f*ck those guys with chainsaws. They are making the experience worse for everyone.
  • 21 2
@Archimonde: Yep, they were cool when one or two guys had them on the hill. But now they are just too much.
  • 14 4
@Archimonde: whats the reason for this shit anyway? I never get it why you need this kind of crap?

@Archimonde take your old man opinions somewhere else! was just at the live race and loved the chainsaws/general noise , and I’m sure the riders did too, if every fan was like you we’d be f**king golf clapping at the finish
  • 21 0
@Onetrakcmind: i'm sure they would rather hear fans shouting their name than a loud chainsaw especially when riders were moaning about the drone buzzing near there heads in leogang
  • 17 0
@Onetrakcmind: Surely we should be able to find an in-between between ear destroying stinking chainsaws and golf clapping, right ?
Don't you think cheering, on top of your lungs if you want to, is good enough ?
Do you really think an hour of racing is worth destroying your ears for your whole life ?
  • 5 0

Oh well I tried, the youth patiently waited 2 long years for a live event, and the riders waited 2 years for a crowd, only to have someone complain about the noise the first race back. Also should add that the young kids (aka the future of the sport) were the ones making most of the noise. I’ve never seen so many happy 10 and under kids with vuvuzelas ect. I’m gonna continue to encourage it because that’s what makes our sport great and so different than golf

  • 14 3
@Onetrakcmind: you clearly don't attended many good events if you think you need a chainsaw to create atmosphere
  • 3 0
@gmcc: I can see you've never brought a chain saw to a party. Always a riot.
  • 15 0
@Archimonde: i once was on an MXGP race. I expect it to be loud, take my earplugs with me and wear them if necessary. There were two guys with chainsaws with oversized trumpet ends in the crowd aswell which for me totally destroyed it. We had to walk on the other side of track to even have a chance to hear the bike and understand what the friends were saying. I'd much rather hear the occassional "normal" chainsaw and in case of MXGP proper 2-Strokes etc.
On a DH race one could also take a banged-up alloy wheel and a bent/cracked handlebar to make noise... Loud enough and not destroying other peoples ears.
  • 8 4
@Onetrakcmind: oh common and that should be the reason all behind this or what? Ridiculous!

IF you cant shout out loud , do you know what? YOU are the old man! Other then that get a f*ck Broken frame and handle bar if you are so keen about noise. Or a freaking wheel.

This is a sport without a motor and you insist there need to be a few. Just stupid shit...
  • 6 2
@Serpentras: true that. Just scream you pussies.
  • 2 2

  • 9 0
@Archimonde: I can’t upvote this enough. I made a similar comment regarding the chainsaws before the first race this year and got downvoted to hell, lol. Seems your comment got an opposite reaction. Maybe the tide is turning on Team Chainsaw?
  • 4 0
YES! Super terrible audio this race!!
  • 7 0
 @Archimonde: Agreed. Totally stupid things.
  • 12 0
100% UCI should ban chainsaws at races. They are loud, anti social and bad for the environment
  • 2 0
@Archimonde: ok, maybe I am swayed a little bit by your reasoning. But, I would not be so harsh in my criticism as there are people on both sides. From reading comments here, my thought was always that, if you are going to turn up to a race with a chainsaw, you need to be well away from any other spectators (usually not too difficult on a DH or enduro trail). But if people are standing beside non chainsaw holding spectators, that's ridiculous. But I still think they have a place, but certainly not in a crowd.

Feel like Troy has to be kicking himself a bit after today. Dropped early due to his qualie crash and had better track conditions than the rest of the guys in the overall hunt. It’s early but feels like Thibaut’s to lose now. Lots of guys capable of winning a race this year, but with a 1 and 2 and the bad finishes for a lot of the other top guys today he’s gotta be feeling good about his chance at the overall.

  • 6 3
 Not a Fayolle situation.
  • 2 1
@BenPea: why not? isnt exactly the same?
  • 5 1
@phuq: Daprela is a top 3 contender anyway, *minimum*, nearly ripped his face off last weekend and still qualified in the 30s, so his karma was heavily in debt. On the absolute dumb surface of it, it's exactly the same, yes. But you would probably bear a little less of a grudge against Daprela than Fayolle for riding his luck here. Level playing field, he might have won it anyway. Am I selling it to you?
  • 4 1
@BenPea: I'm totally OK with Daprela on first step of the podium. The guy is a machine. He could have won this race even with everyone under the same weather. Still...Gwin, Vergier, Bruni, Hart and so many others would have been higher in the ranking. We'll never know, but it was not a fair race.

 PLUS:
- Deprela !! Commencal rider on it!! Full on, what a run.
- Jackson G. Like the Disney childhood star but with proper parenting/guidance. Incredible riding, very exciting future. Line up for factory deals at his parents front door next season.

- Track. When your nervous and excited watching, something is right.

MINUS:
- GWIN. Positivity/excuses running thin. Went off same batch as race winner, great opportunity lost. Right mind frame, quicker adaptation required.
- Vali/Nicole, crashes from what could have been.
