Final Results from the Les Gets XC World Cup 2021

Jul 4, 2021
by Ed Spratt
Anton Cooper seems to have his starts dialled this season we ve seen him take the holeshot multiple times.

For the Les Gets World Cup this year, the course has seen some big changes with plenty of fresh tech sections to make things far more challenging for the riders. Just like the DH, the weather has not been favorable to the riders and it is a mudbath for race day. In the U23 racing, there was plenty of carnage, but Mona Mitterwallner and Simone Avondetto mastered the mud to take the top steps of the podium in their categories.

The Elite Women faced some very tough conditions in Les Gets with persistent rain and sticky mud. Loana Lecomte once again dominated the race with the lead from the early laps to the finish line. Jenny Rissveds managed to secure a second-place finish after a big crash at the start of the race and some trouble with the loose conditions. Evie Richards was a rider looking very confident on the tricky course, attacking on the descents and pushing hard for a third-place result. World Champion Pauline Ferrand Prevot once again didn't have an answer for Loana Lecomte, but with her eyes are set on the Olympics, we will have to see if her strategy pays off in Tokyo later this month.

There was another dominant rider in the Elite Men's racing as Mathias Flueckiger controlled the speed from the start and looked at home in the wet conditions. Ondrej Cink tried his best over the seven laps to close in on Mathias with some huge efforts up the climbs, but in the end, he had to settle for second place, 25 seconds back. World Champion Jordan Sarrou battled with Alan Hatherly the whole race, but a mistake from the South African on the final section of the track gave Jordan a third-place finish.

Check out the full results below.

Live Race Updates:

The 2021 World Cup XC racing continues with the fourth round in Les Gets.

The Women's racing kicks off on Red Bull TV at: PST 03:00 / EST 06:00 / BST 11:00 / CEST 12:00

The Men will start on Red Bull TV at: PST 05:30 / EST 08:30 / BST 13:30 / CEST 14:30

The Elite Women are off with Jenny Rissveds leading the pack. The track is looking very slick today and we heard there was plenty of carnage in the U23 races.

Pauline Ferrand Prevot has now taken the lead on the first lap with Rocio Del Alba Garcia Martinez in second.

Jenny Rissveds pushes back into the lead through one of the technical downhill sections. Evie Richards has a small crash in the woods as her wheel slips out.

Loana Lecomte is already at the front as they reach the midpoint of lap one.

After the first lap the top five Elite Women are:

1st. Loana Lecomte: 13:37
2nd. Jenny Rissveds: +12
3rd. Pauline Ferrand Prevot: +13
4th. Rebecca McConnell: +13
5th. Evie Richards: +29

The gap is closed between Loana Lecomte and the chasing group. It doesn't look like Loana will be riding away from the start today.

Pauline Ferrand Prevot tries to go past Loana Lecomte but she fights back and holds the lead.

Pauline has taken over the lead from Loana at the first split on lap two.

Loana squeezes past Pauline on a wild inside line. Jenny Rissveds slips out in the woods.

Pauline Ferrand Prevot crashes out on the grass giving Loana a big lead. The track is looking very tricky today.

Rebecca McConnell overtakes Pauline Ferrand Prevot and it looks like she is trying hard to close the gap to Loana.

After the second lap the top five Elite Women are:

1st. Loana Lecomte: 27:58
2nd. Pauline Ferrand Prevot: +21
3rd. Rebecca McConnell: +21
4th. Jenny Rissveds: +38
5th. Evie Richards: +40

Loana has built a 30-second gap to the chasing group. Loana's riding today is very impressive as she looks composed through the mud and tech despite not having a dropper post.

After the third lap the top five Elite Women are:

1st. Loana Lecomte: 42:26
2nd. Pauline Ferrand Prevot: +48
3rd. Rebecca McConnell: +48
4th. Evie Richards: +59
5th.Jenny Rissveds: +1:00

Jenny Rissveds has fought back to the front and has passed Pauline Ferrand Prevot to take third place. Pauline looks to be struggling in the conditions.

Rissveds is flying down the descents and has almost caught second-placed Rebecca McConnell.

Evie Richards looks to be closing the gap to Pauline Ferrand Prevot in the fight for fourth place. The gap between the two riders is just nine seconds.

A smart inside line choice by Evie Richards nearly fully closes the gap to Pauline Ferrand Prevot as both riders get off their bikes and walk through a technical section.

Evie Richards passes Pauline Ferrand Prevot to take fourth place.

After the fourth lap the top five Elite Women are:

1st. Loana Lecomte: 57:17
2nd. Jenny Rissveds: +46
3rd. Rebecca McConnell: +46
4th. Evie Richards: +59
5th. Pauline Ferrand Prevot: +1:06

Evie Richards has now overtaken Rebecca McConnell to move into third position.

A huge off for Evie Richards on the grass as she loses control of her bike.

Going into the final lap the top five Elite Women are:

1st. Loana Lecomte: 1:12:14
2nd. Jenny Rissveds: +41
3rd. Evie Richards: +1:06
4th. Rebecca McConnell: +1:12
5th. Pauline Ferrand Prevot: +1:28

Pauline Ferrand Prevot is attacking on the final lap and passes Rebecca McConnell for fourth place.

Loana Lecomte takes her fourth World Cup win in 2021!

The top five Elite Women are:

1st. Loana Lecomte: 1:27:23
2nd. Jenny Rissveds: +51
3rd. Evie Richards: +1:10
4th. Pauline Ferrand Prevot: +1:51
5th. Rebecca McConnell: +1:55

The Elite Men are off with Jordan Sarrou leading the race in some very horrible looking conditions.

Luca Braidot is managing to pull a decent lead on Ondrej Cink with another gap back to a big chasing group of riders.

Mathias Flueckiger makes a big move to pass the whole of the chasing group to launch an attack to close the gap on Braidot and Cink.

Mathias Flueckiger has passed Cink and is now closing in on Luca Braidot.

Flueckiger and Cink have shut down the gap to Braidot

After the first lap the top five Elite Men are:

1st. Mathias Flueckiger: 11:52
2nd. Luca Braidot: +4
3rd. Ondrej Cink: +6
4th. Alan Hatherly: +8
5th. Nino Schurter: +10

Once again it is Mathias Flueckiger and Ondrej Cink leading the race and pushing a hard pace.

Mathias Flueckiger has pulled a sizeable gap on the first technical downhill of lap two. Ondrej Cink has now fallen back to the chasing group of Alan Hatherly and Jordan Sarrou.

On just one downhill section Mathias Fluekciger created a 13-second gap to Ondrej Cink.

After the second lap the top five Elite Men are:

1st. Mathias Flueckiger: 24:08
2nd. Alan Hatherly: +18
3rd. Jordan Sarrou: +22
4th. Ondrej Cink: +23
5th. Daniele Braidot: +23

After the third lap the top five Elite Men are:

1st. Mathias Flueckiger: 24:08
2nd. Ondrej Cink: +28
3rd. Alan Hatherly: +29
4th. Jordan Sarrou: +30
5th. Nino Schurter: +49

After the fourth lap the top five Elite Men are:

1st. Mathias Flueckiger: 49:12
2nd. Jordan Sarrou: +28
3rd. Ondrej Cink: +29
4th. Alan Hatherly: +30
5th. Nino Schurter: +56

Tom Pidcock may have pulled out of racing today as he is currently 81st on the timing screen and continuing to drop back.

Ondrej Cink is starting to push the pace as he closes the gap from 28 to 18 seconds on the first climb.

After the fifth lap the top five Elite Men are:

1st. Mathias Flueckiger: 1:01:52
2nd. Ondrej Cink: +26
3rd. Alan Hatherly: +34
4th. Jordan Sarrou: +34
5th. Nino Schurter: +1:08

Tom Pidcock and Gerhard Kerschbaumer have pulled out of the race.

Heading into the final lap the top five Elite Men are:

1st. Mathias Flueckiger: 1:14:37
2nd. Ondrej Cink: +29
3rd. Alan Hatherly: +41
4th. Jordan Sarrou: +42
5th. Nino Schurter: +1:16

Jordan Sarrou finds some last lap speed to launch an attack to pass Alan Hatherly.

Mathias Flueckiger wins another World Cup in 2021!

The top five Elite Men are:

1st. Mathias Flueckiger: 1:27:33
2nd. Ondrej Cink: +25
3rd. Jordan Sarrou: +35
4th. Alan Hatherly: +39
5th. Nino Schurter: +1:21

She might have needed one had Jolanda been there.

Not really. She used her high seat as leverage and for balence to carve turns in the slick mud.

So impressive that Loana rode that track in the wet with no dropper and didn't fall off once (at least not on camera)!

Looked remarkably (comparatively) clean as she crossed the line.

Gotta say, masterful performance.

Commencal doesn't have a XC bike in their lineup but sponsors a section on the track... New model coming soon?
  • 8 1
Commencal bossman said no to carbon. I'm no XC expert, but I doubt aluminium is making a comeback in such discipline.
  • 6 1
@Euskafreez: They have done a couple of carbon models in the past. Covid and the increasingly insane Chinese government has changed the market drastically in the past 12-24 months. Maybe enough to make frames made in the EU a viable option? In that case, now would be the right time to invest in production capacity, while demand is sky-high and bikes sell at full retail. The current "DC-direction" of XC bikes is a perfect fit with the Commencal DNA as well.
  • 9 6
@Nygaard: Commencal bossman said no to carbon due to environmental friendly reasons mainly, which I strongly disagree with.
Yes they did carbon frames. But back then if their alloy frame were bad in terms of reliability, their carbon lineup were even worse. They earned the nickname of commence mal lol , which means starts badly in french …

  • 7 0

So, do the U23 race the same Track as elite womens? Just wondering, cause the lap times of the U23 are faster to awefully close to the podium elites...
  • 6 1
Under 23 races take place on Saturday. So not in the rain and mud. I’m sure if the elites had raced in the dry they’d have much better times.

@c-radicallis; The Government of Palestine, Humas, is a literal terrorist organization as recognized by many in the international community launching missiles from civilians target into civilian populations. They couldn’t give two shits about their actual people and their lives and giving them opportunities. America has it fair share of issues but that is just a deflection of the point and has nothing to do with this topic at all. To compare the two shows your ignorance.
  • 32 19
@c-radicallis: Lol at the “free Palestine” commenters like you... take a look into the numerous attempts at the two-state solution which have been backed by Israel and were constantly rejected by Palestinian leadership (one of which occurred in 2008 when Israel offered 99.5% of the West Bank and Gaza as well as a shared Jerusalem, but Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas refused)..... whenever the two-state solution has ever been proposed by Israel, the response from Palestine has been that Israel should just go die. Convenient how people ignore the thousands of rockets that Palestine has been launching indiscriminately at Israel recently. This is not a one sided affair like people are ignorantly making it seem lately.

..... guess that info wasn’t on Reddit where you get your “information”.

We see what your country does and we see the lies they spread to cover their asses because they spend so much money with our military contractors we won't bat an eye and will continue to prevent the UN from being able to do anything about the gross human rights violations the Zionist Jewish government is responsible for.
  • 19 8
@lifeofloon: make sure you ignore hamas hiding their rocket sites amongst their civilians, and make sure you ignore hamas launching thousands of rockets indiscriminately at civilian targets in Israel.

People like you, thinking there is only one party acting improperly in a situation like this, are part of the problem in the problem in the world.

Not saying Israel is in any way blameless, but hamas has stated repeatedly that the only solution they want is the destruction of Israel. Get off social media “news” sites and pick up a history book. Yikes.

  • 13 10
@TypicalCanadian: Even more convenient is how you forgot to mention that Israel has ignored the UN two state solution for over 70 years now, continues to occuppy increasing amounts of Palestinian land, don't have any intentions of stopping, have one of the most powerful military in the world and still try to play victim after all this years because once in a blue moon some half assed militia manages to actually hit something with their primitive ass rockets.

@Mntneer: @yetiyot: I think it is unfair to accuse the website itself of anti-Semitism. There have been several articles on riding in Israel, interviews with Israeli riders, and, I expect from their names, a few employees who are Jewish or ancestrally-Jewish.

Now, as for whether Pinkbike commentators are 'overtly anti-Semitic', you'd need to show me the evidence that proves that at least the majority are in order for you to say it is true. Six people who are anti-Israel doesn't make the PB community 'overtly anti-Semitic'. And sometimes people downvote not because of WHAT you say, but how you say it, or react to it. ATM this OP is +13/-16. Those 16 could be made up of people that downvote because they disagree with yetiyot's prior reactions to a few downvotes.
