Live Race Updates:
12:21 PST

Reece Wilson wins!

12:36 PST

Coulanges goes tenth, 2.851 back. It's down to Iles and Wilson now and we are guaranteed a new World Cup winner by the end of the afternoon.

12:33 PST

Shaw rolls over the line 16th, 5.4 in arrears, just 2 to go now.

12:25 PST

Reece Wilson watches Norton's, Pierron's and Brosnan's times go by but there are spots where they pull back time on him. This race isn't over yet.

12:21 PST

5 to go, here's how it looks:

1. Reece Wilson - 3:10.066
2. Loic Bruni +0.032
3. Loris Vergier +0.580
4. Mark Wallace +1.332
5. Matt Walker +1.740

12:27 PST

Reece Wilson might just have delivered that run! The Scotsman goes into the hotseat by 0.032 seconds. "Finally" he shouts in the finish corral.

12:00 PST

Bruni has just said he doesn't think he's put down a winning time but I think it's going to take one hell of a run to beat it. Only 8 riders have the chance to take it from him now.

12:00 PST

Bruni goes fastest by 0.5, the race is back on!

11:58 PST

The race has cooled off a little with only David Trummer getting closer to Vergier's time but even he's more than 2.5 seconds back. Next up is Loic Bruni.

11:37 PST

Incredible drama with still around 20 riders to go. Here's how it looks after all that madness:

1. Loris Vergier - 3:10.646
2. Remi Thirion +3.071
3. Angel Suarez +3.201
4. Joe Breeden +4.746
5. George Brannigan +4.946

11:36 PST

Huge from Vergier! 3 seconds quicker than Thirion!

11:31 PST

Daprela crashes! Thibaut was green but goes down after a front wheel issue. The title battle will go down to the wire on Saturday now. How can Vergier respond to this?

11:28 PST

Just before they do battle, Remi Thirion sneaks into the hotseat and breaks into the 3:13s for the first time of anyone all week - 1.675 in the lead.

11:22 PST

Get ready for the start of the title battle in a few minutes. Daprela and Vergier will race back to back and are currently 1 and 2 in the series.

11:19 PST

Kade Edwards has a disappointing run with an early crash but a double pump suicide on the final sender almost makes up for it

11:11 PST

Joe Breeden goes fastest. He beats Brannigan by 0.2 exactly and is within a second of yesterday's fastest time.

11:08 PST

With 30 riders to go, here's how the top 5 is looking:

1. George Brannigan - 3:15.592
2. Tuhoto-Ariki Pene +0.867
3. Kye A'Hern +0.938
4. Dante Silva +1.376
5. Davide Palazzari +1.801

11:03 PST

George Brannigan is next to beat the hotseat time. He pushes out Tuhoto by nearly a second.

10:48 PST

Cathro goes fourth. Ben posts a time of 3:21.101 beating his qualifying time by 4 seconds.

10:48 PST

Ben Cathro is on track!

10:47 PST

Henry Kerr has just set an early benchmark time. He's into the hotseat by 4.5 seconds and only 4 seconds off the fastest qualifying time set by Finn Iles yesterday.

Update: Scratch that, Thoto-Ariki Pene has gone faster still - a 3:16.459, which puts him in the lead by 1.6.

10:36 PST

Racing is underway for the men and Gabriel Neron has set the early hotseat time with a 3:25.945. For those on #CathroWatch, he starts at 13:46 local time, or in about 10 minutes from now.

10:19 PST

Vali Holl wins, Myriam Nicole ends up slotting fourth. Saturday's race is going to be a nail biter!

10:17 PST

Myriam Nicole crashes!

10:13 PST

That may not be the run Balanche was hoping for. She was losing time to Holl all the way through the run and goes provisionally second with only the fastest qualifier Nicole to go.

10:11 PST

It's time for the title battle now, Balanche vs Nicole.

10:10 PST

Holl goes fastest! with just two riders to go, Vali takes the hotseat from Cabirou by 5.7 seconds. Her fourth sector was especially impressive and she put 3 seconds into Cabirou in 40 seconds of racing.

10:06 PST

It's a rough day at the office for Nina Hoffmann who takes a spill DNFs then Mille Johnset is a bit back on the pace so all eyes turn to the top of the mountain and Vali Holl.

10:00 PST

Marine Cabirou is the next rider and although she is behind at split 1 and 2, she comes back strong in the bottom half of the track to knock another 4 seconds off the fastest time but it's still 6 seconds off Nicole's fastest time from qualifying yesterday.

9:56 PST

Eleonora Farina has slotted into second so with six to go, the current standings are :

1. Tahnee Seagrave - 3:50.647
2. Eleonora Farina +1.347
3. Emilie Siegenthaler +3.825
4. Monika Hrastnik +7.255
5. Kailey Skelton +12.309

9:52 PST

Siengenthaler's time sees off the challenge of Hrastnik but Tahnee Seagrave is on a flier. There are a few slip ups in the bottom section but he puts down a 3:50.647 to take the top spot by 3.8 seconds.

9:46 PST

On her final race week as a professional downhiller, Emilie Siegnethlaer fires into the hotseat with a lead of 8.5 seconds and a time of 3:54.472.

9:42 PST

We're about to enter the top ten qualifiers and the current standings are :

1. Kailey Skelton - 4:02.956
2. Helena Ronning +1.122
3. Anna Newkirk +1.414
4. Jess Blewitt +19.353
5. Rachel Pageau - DNF

9:38 PST

Racing is underway and Kailey Skelton is into the hotseat early. She's one of two American racers here in the women's field and sets the benchmark with a 4:02.956

Well that isn't good advertising for enve. Daprela is a beast for getting up from that.
  • 16 2
It almost looks like the tire came off first? Hard to tell
  • 119 2
Somewhere Paul Aston is probably going “I tried to tell them”
  • 19 7
I don't Envee him. This carbon crap is too fragile for such a killer.
  • 3 0
@PTyliszczak: honestly that would make sense or at least lower pressure. that was wildly catastrophic looking.
  • 2 0
@adrennan: The camera changed from back to front right there. We will have to wait for some slow mo analysis to see. But I think it was coming off from the front shot and then hit a hole and blew up.
  • 17 19
 carbon wheels. never once.
  • 43 5
If I was the Commençal's technical manager, Enve should just muc off.
  • 18 5
Typically there is no clear looser on WC DH, but Enve is the highlight of today's race and it has a chance to become an overall WC looser, just wow Wink
Btw, PB comment section knows that carbon rims are for dentists but somehow WC teams do not take our comments seriously, but clearly this is gonna change now Wink
  • 14 1
@lkubica: well Enve wheels braking could become a decisive factor for the DH overall for the second time in a few years. Granted Daprela was crashing anyway by the look of it (need to check the repaly though), but the busted wheel caused a dnf, rather than maybe a 30something place finish.

flag Mugen (Sep 15, 2021 at 13:21) (Below Threshold)
Envee is actually French for "en V", which is the answer to the question "how did you crash?" "well my wheel exploded, so i smashed into the ground and bounced right back up into the sky, like a V"
  • 15 1
I checked and in the slow-mo it actually looks like the wheel gave out.
  • 4 0
Anyone know where I can find the replay or just a video of his crash? Can’t seem to find it anywhere
  • 6 1
I'd assume he was not only on the heaviest/burliest wheel (m9) but also on a brand new set. This does not bode well for enve
  • 29 1
I remember watching a race the last year the Syndicate were on Enve, and for whatever reason Redbull had a camera at Santa Cruz HQ where the staff were all watching (it may have been world champs). By chance they cut to them right at the moment Greg's wheel failed/ punctured in his run and you could clearly hear someone shout 'f*ck Enve'.
  • 22 0
So I went to the replay and got some freeze frames. It does appear his tire is coming up before dropping into a whole and the wheel exploding. Is it coming off because it started to fail? I don't know, the first photo is the frame immediately after they cut from the rear camera so it's impossible to tell unless they have additional angles.

@Folks: Enve just deserves a good pair of Spanks IMO.
  • 2 0
 @VanNoche: always twice
  • 1 0
@PTyliszczak: That is what it looked like to me. Why the tire is coming off, seems like the next question.
  • 12 0
@PTyliszczak: Watched it a few times as well. Looks like the front wheel slid on the bridge and put the wheel in to a hole/ditch. It just shattered/exploded when it impacted the flat side of that hole. The fork wasn't even bottomed out when the wheel failed.

Not a good look for ENVE. He might have still hung up there and lost a bunch of time, but I feel like he likely would have made it down the course with a different wheel.
  • 5 0
@Noeserd: you the real MVP but GOD DAMN that was a nasty spill. I can’t believe he popped right up.
  • 1 0
@Folks: I would love to see this clip if it was still on the internet.
  • 2 1
@jayacheess: in the images that PT provided the rim looks fine and in the air in the first capture, but the tire has come off the rim. Then in the next shot the rim exploded when it is shoved into a hole with no tire on it, as any wheel would do.

I think that you probably diagnosed the feature that took the tire came off the rim though.
  • 5 0
@PTyliszczak: nice work. I find it hard to believe a properly inflated dh tire comes off in this kind of situation ( i have never seen this in all the years), i would assume an already soft fronttire or a rimfail leading to the tire coming of.
  • 1 0
@optimumnotmaximum: definitely a funky situation. I think it's possible the tire was going flat, maybe a sidewall tear so it was deflating quickly, when he pushed off to accelerate around the tree I bet he tore it off and then of course the wheel exploded in the hole.
  • 1 0
Does anyone have a timestamp of Daprela's run in the RB replay?
  • 2 0
@optimumnotmaximum: properly inflated would likely be defined as as soft as you can get away with. If it is just a little bit softer the tire will be a bit too squirmy and will likely fall off the rim.

I've seen this happen numerous times. For instance when Gwin popped off the side of the bridge at Fort William a foot before the end and exploded his tire off the rim then cartwheeled off track. 2019? This does happen a lot, but it has gotten better in recent years, I used to blow non DH tires off rims all the time, but tolerances have gotten much better especially in the tubeless era.
  • 2 0
 @mi-bike: roughly 44 min.
  • 1 0
 @PTyliszczak: cheers
  • 2 0
@PTyliszczak: that's exactly what I saw. Tire pulled from the rim and then you have carbon directly on rocks. Not a good combo.
  • 2 0
Carpet Fibers all over the place!
  • 3 0
@PTyliszczak: right before that turn, Warner is yelling about him getting his front wheel offline, wonder if that's it he flatted there, maybe a burp, and then ripped the whole thing off the rim right after. Then blew up the bare rim on the rocks.
  • 22 1
Enve, destroying overall WC hopes since 2017.
  • 2 0
@erg6k: Doesn't look like the bare rim hit the rocks. The bead might be broken on one side, but it still impacts rubber first and the rim after. I honestly wonder if the rim might have been cracked or compromised before that, which caused the tire to start coming loose in the first place.
  • 10 2
@PTyliszczak: Tyres dont just completely come off the rim for no reason. Particularly with an insert. I would say the rim collapsed causing the tyre to come off then it all came apart as he went in to the turn.
  • 4 3
@zyoungson: I certainly didn't say there was no reason. There are a multitude of possibilities, and while I have no skin in the game to defend enve I think it's hard to definitively say it was rim failure under expected circumstances.
  • 1 0
@PTyliszczak: Earlier in the run I think I remember hearing a strange noise when he went through that left turn compression situation.
  • 3 0
@insertfunusername: i cant remember the Gwin incident. I have seen fronttires leaking air and eventually popping off, i have seen reartires ripped off. Non leaking fronttires, not so much.Pros are usually running at least 20 psi in the front. I have a hard time believing that you can rip off a 20psi Schwalbe DH tire in that situation.
  • 2 1
@adrennan: @mi-bike: @Noeserd: posted the link and time a few posts above this. Good on him!

44.xx mins Thibaut's run
  • 4 0
@PTyliszczak: quite possible, but even if the tire failed first, a wheel should not desintegrate like that. It popped into at least 4 pieces within milliseconds.
  • 3 1
 T'BONE Dapréla
  • 1 1
 ..
  • 2 3
@zyoungson: did you watch worlds?? Reece peeled a front tire clean off the rim at max-g in the final turn of the race. It can and does happen.
  • 5 0
 @Trudeez: It went soft before.
  • 5 0
@Trudeez: Did you have your eyes open? It stayed on the rim and he rode out til the finish.
  • 6 0
It's repeatedly in each race... Armaury or Drapela pull off cause wheel incident... Also Enve was very brave to sponsor the 2 most agressive riders... I guess it won't continue this sponsorship for next season... More for riders will decline for sure... All the money is not worth it...
  • 2 0
@zyoungson: those rims by my experience (4 rear cracked rims s70 on my enduro) doesn't hold well lateral flexion.
  • 3 0
He should find some aluminum intense DH rims for the last race and put enve stickers on them.
  • 1 0
@PTyliszczak: regardless of tire coming off first, a DH rim should not fail in that scenario. Making these tires, chains, and rims to withstand this stuff is not an engineering mystery. It’s silly and disappointing we see this many mechanicals in racing. (and deal with them IRL, but there’s other factors there)
  • 1 0
@piratetrails: You could make a rim that doesn't fail, while being pushed into a rock hole, sideways, with no inflated tire, at top world cup race pace.... It would just weigh a lot more than the rim Daprela was using, probably 2x or 3x more.

@schlockinz: lots of non americans beat lots of americans on an american track, not really sure the nationality of the soil is that important.

@paulskibum: We have a time tariff here as well if you haven't heard. It encourages more MTB races to be held here.

@paulskibum: I think he's referring to the characteristics of the track. It's an "east coast" track and is distinctly different from a lot of tracks Cathro would be able to practice at home.

Can we all agree that Eliot Jackson is a great asset to the redbull coverage? Please keep him on for years to come Redbull!!
  • 10 6
Absolutely! Hes so chill too, i can't say i'll miss Claudio's outbursts though i did like claudio's insider info being a (former?) team manager.
  • 27 1
He and Rob are really starting to mesh well
  • 18 2
Last year when he was doing the crankworx stuff I found him quite monotonous, but he has really stepped up his game this year and each race he is sounding more and more confident, and he and Warner are feeding off each other better each race. Just like riding, the more you do it, the better you get.
  • 27 1
@nzstormer: Not only Jackson but Tracey Hannah is finding her feet more and more as well.
  • 5 0
Him and Rob were too funny today. Had me laughing pretty hard a points. Also had amazing track knowledge.
  • 5 0
 Absolutely. Love his enthusiasm!
  • 2 1
Agreed, he is very knowledgeable and is such a pleasure to listen to. A great addition. I'd love to see Claudio in there too.
  • 7 9
@The-Foiling-Optimist: no doubt I'll get downvoted to infinity and be accused of being part of the patriarchy and all that, but Tracy's commentating is terrible.
  • 5 6
I disagree. His mellow ramblings belie the intense action happening on course. I wish he would show more excitement and talk more about what's happening on track. Thibaut, who was leading the WC overall at the time, crashes and Rob screams. Eliot: no reaction. Wtf
  • 6 0
 @Davec85:

Tracey has had some hickups. She seems to often have good insight and wants to contribute, but then gets tripped up over herself or seems to lack confidence in what she's saying. Like, damn girl - have some confidence! You're f*cking badass and you know what you're talking about.

I do start to wonder if commentary just isn't the right fit for her.
  • 5 0
@jayacheess: This is not an easy thing to do and Tracey is getting better race by race, as is Eliot. You have to gain the confidence to share your insights, which you have to think up and frame quickly, but also get into a rhythm with the main announcer. Rob is pretty animated so it's not bad for Eliot and Tracey to be more chill, but they are learning how to get in there and add comments at the right times. it's interesting to see though how impressed we've all been with Reese Wilson, who was just naturally brilliant right out of the box. Will also say that Rachel Atherton was quickly up to speed at Hardline 2019 and Finn Iles was remarkably good in an online rebroadcast of an earlier race that Redbull did in 2020. So there are more or less natural talents in this area but I think Eliot and Tracey are getting there.
  • 3 0
@The-Foiling-Optimist: They're both absolutely getting better.

I think Eliot has been hitting his stride lately. I'm certainly hoping Tracey keeps improving, as well. I just haven't seen it happen as quickly as for Eliot.
  • 4 0
@jayacheess: She hasn't been commentating for anywhere near as long as Eliot
  • 2 0
@Linkpin: Yeah, I thought that might be the case. I seem to remember him doing some other work.
  • 2 0
I was critical of Eliot's earlier efforts in the booth due to largely echoing what Rob was doing, only much worse, and then contributing nothing at critical moments ("I don't know what to SAY!!!"). But credit where credit it due, he is really coming into his own as a color commentator by injecting fresh insights into race calls, sharing engaging anecdotes and stories about the riders, and most of all, working off of Rob's play-by-play commentary. That side conversation about Rob's three year deal wouldn't have happened with the earlier version of Eliot's commentary. Glad to see that Eliot seems to be putting in the same level of work behind the scenes into his commentating gig that he put into his racing gig. I also very much enjoyed the course preview he did with his new buddy triggering the timer at the finish line.

Already feeling sorry for his grandchildren.
  • 55 0
This looks very grim for Enve. Looks like rim failure rather than rider error. Glad Thibault seems ok.
  • 28 4
funny to hear Elliot try to play it off as rider error.... give me a break
  • 28 1
@chummyweim: Buy a Enve rim, you'll get your break.
  • 9 0
@chummyweim: Claudio now cocommentates the german broadcast and he said even before the slomo:" the wheel just fell apart"- jup well spotted.
  • 9 2
Looked like the tire came off and then the rim exploded once it hit the ground/rocks. Could be an ENVE thing, or a Schwalbe thing. The rider error talk from Elliot was about him getting bucked forward a bit causing Daprela to overload the front and causing the tire to come off, or however the accident started.
  • 4 0
@insertfunusername: thanks, makes sense and in slow-mo it looks like the exposed carbon wheel was tucked in and took a lateral impact before it folded. You can see the exposed tire insert for a bit before it all explodes.
  • 2 1
@chummyweim: that is what it looked like to me, though I just looked real quick on red bull tv on my phone, so it was a bit hard to tell for sure. He could have had his front tire going soft, which caused the initial getting bucked forward that seemed like it started the whole thing.
  • 7 0
@insertfunusername: we've seen lots of aluminum rims get ridden down a track with no tire on, none of them exploded like that.
  • 1 0
@Muckal: I have seen more than one aluminum rim explode into pieces in person, so it does happen, though they usually just taco. I did once have a front wheel taco while going in a straight line super hard on the brakes. Instant OTB.
  • 1 0
@chummyweim: just watched the replay from race 2 and I shit you not Elliot said something about not wanting aluminum rims in these rocks (Rob agreed with him). Sound like shills to me
  • 1 0
@piratetrails: Daprela and Pieron smash their rims into the ground constantly, through their inserts. So if they had aluminum rims they would dent the hell out of them every run, like the old days. In the old days they were running tubes, so a dented rim didn't necessarily mean a bead that was leaking air. I don't know of an insert system that you use a tube with, so I don't know how they could run inserts and tubes as they would need to with a plan of denting your aluminum rims really bad every run.

  • 1 1
@zusspa: looked like the tire may have come off first.
  • 7 2
ENVE just deserves a good SPANK!!!
  • 4 0
@insertfunusername: Tires don't just fall off rims unless they're being peeled off in a high-g berm (and even then, incredibly rarely). He was bouncing through as rock garden, though. It's more likely that the tire was falling off because the rim had already cracked or partially failed, and then the final hit was what caused it to explode.
  • 3 1
@jayacheess: There were a couple funny noises in some high g turns a little before the failure. You can also see that he loses front wheel traction across a bridge, which causes him to get his front wheel at least a bit sideways across the bridge, then on the other side there are some fun rocks that he pushes the bike into. After that you can see that the tire has come off the rim and so when he pushes the wheel, not featuring an inflated or fully seated tire, super hard into the hole in the rocks the wheel totally explodes, as one would expect any wheel to do.

There might be something to say about the strange noises, about 10 seconds before the crash, were perhaps the wheel failing enough to cause an air leak, and that led to the later slide across the bridge, which put the front wheel sideways into a high g situation on the other side, that stripped the tire off the rim. That is all just guessing though on any of our parts, since we were not there.

I must be clear, I'm not a carbon rim defender, I much prefer alloy rims myself, for cost and ride feel reasons. I just think that it is really hard to say exactly what happened from the info I have seen so far. The only thing that is clear is that when the rim exploded, there was not a tire on the wheel. So in that particular moment, it was not the fault of the rim, it can be argued that the rim may have had a role in why there was no tire on the wheel in that moment, but we do not have all the evidence.
  • 1 0
@insertfunusername: Sure, I'm with you on all that. It's fun to speculate, anyway. And I'm certainly not down on all carbon wheels - just ENVE ;D

@jayacheess: I bet there are some really nice carbon wheels out there and I have seen hundreds built of various brands. The ones I was tempted by many years ago were the NOX and now it seems like most companies are building some compliance into them. I have only rode some IBIS ones years ago, in the rain and they just felt like I was giving up a ton of traction getting ping ponged around on any little wet root.

 "a front wheel issue"

yeah, it exploded. you can say what happened, it nearly shattered into dust...
  • 10 2
I don’t know if I’ll ever trust carbon wheels, anytime I think about buying a pair. My brain flashes images of what we saw in that crash today. I’ve heard too many stories ranging from your average jabroni friend, to pros just exploding them.
  • 5 1
@pbfan08: I felt that way about carbon bikes back in the early 2000's - hated following the few people I knew who had them for fear of splinters in my eyes.

But now I feel that if I had been given that wheel before his race run I could have ridden it for 2 years and wouldnt have done anything to make it die because I am not a WC racer.
  • 2 0
@pbfan08: I've got a nobl 37 on my rear wheel. I'm not a world cup racer or anything, but I do ride them fairly hard. I'm 6 months in and I've had no problems. I think for us average joe's a nice set will most likely never have any problems.
  • 2 0
@pbfan08: the fact that so much doubt around a product that’s 4x the cost of an alternative is enough to make me never want carbon rims. Plain and simple.
  • 2 0
@paulskibum: so for me it’s probably the same. But from anecdotal experiences of buddies I ride with when these carbon wheels do go whether it’s 1 month or two years after they were installed they fail catastrophically. Like as in explode into a heeping pile of carbon dust. Which I have very very rarely seen alu do(the only one I can think of off is Kelly McCarry exploding one on that canyon gap he tried flipping). And my buddies were on zipp motos allegdedly one of the stronger carbon sets.

I just realize that in Snowshoe they've put a few earth gardens between the rocks.
  • 29 2
I'd say that contract between Enve and Commencal is under serious review right now. All those Team riders will be asking big questions....... clearly the wheel failed. Slohmo horror show.
  • 22 0
Amaurys back wheel failure at worlds as well.
  • 8 0
Commençal didn't have any wheel issues when they were with Spank as far as I know; correct me if I'm wrong.
  • 5 0
Additionally, I remember Amaury saying he needed softer suspension to recreate the feel of the old bike on spank's- he didn't say they were too stiff, but it doesn't really come across to me as much of an endorsement

"At double the price of a high-end alloy wheelset, the Enve M735 wheelset did not deliver anything better. Due to the multiple breaks and other minor issues I'm unable to recommend this wheelset, especially if your local trails tend to be rough and rocky."
  • 12 2
LOL this quote: " You can drive a new car off a lot and wreck it the first time you pull out onto the street.". Sure, if you aren't using it for what it's meant to be used for... like if I took a civic 4x4ing I would expect it wouldn't hold up as good as a 4 Runner or Tacoma. These rims are made specifically for DH riding so yeah, they shouldn't wreck the first time we ride down a mountain.... What an idiot quote LOL.
  • 4 0
@bryannn: probably not, surely a prototype or the m9s. still crazy to see such a failure. considering the price and the alleged hype around them...

Holy friggen thibaut. That wheel just exploded, so unexpected. Saturday is going to be crazy, especially with loris putting down a heater today

  • 26 4
Welp I'm never ever buying an ENVE wheelset
  • 5 2
To each their own in any bike components. But after cracking an 8 month old carbon rim (not Enve) on a trail ride, that pretty much closed the door on carbon wheels for me.
  • 3 0
@foggnm: couldn’t work out what exactly your problem was there with your janky old rims, until I realised you said 8 MONTHS, not YEARS!!! Frown not ideal.
  • 4 1
@foggnm: what brand carbon? Always worth asking. For another anecdotal data point my 7 year old Enve AMs are still rolling straight and smooth with thousands of miles on them.
  • 2 0
@ruggedmaine: that's why I said "to each their own" but I live in the land of sharp and plenty rocks. Not worth the risk to me. Everything here is rocky in the southwest. Not going to call out the brand because they warrantied the rim exceptionally professionally and fast (I gave the new rim away and sold the front matching wheel). But I have no interest in riding a wheel that can have a failure that results in walking home from the trail. First time in my life to have a wheel failure (other than something like a broken spoke)...25+ years riding, first carbon wheel.....you get the picture!

kinda crazy how she always wins with big margins, definitely a rider to watch in the future
  • 6 0
 @tgr9:
I think the most interesting thing around her is how she's dealing with pressure. She became a European Champion, then a World Champion and is now leading the WC - and seems to be able to constantly pull out clean runs on qualifying and race day.
Fingers crossed she keeps this up.
  • 4 1
@tgr9: Probably worth noting that her closest competitor is riding with a broken arm.
  • 1 0
when the suns shines, we'll shine together
  • 2 0
@Tmfnll: Kinda makes me wonder why would FMD let her race with a broken wrist. I get why racers in the elite category would ride with an injury, but risking a rider's future development in a category that gets little to no coverage seems pointless to me.
  • 1 0
 @ChrisDss: Agreed
  • 17 1
YEAH TRISTAN LEMIRE!!! The Bromont Local! 3rd place congrats buddy! Big Grin
  • 15 2
Few years back enve rims cost Greg Minnaar the overall, that's when they switched to making their own reserve wheels. Kinda ironic, that commencal who are so anticarbon for their frames, run enve carbon rims.

If I have a sponsorship with ENVE and i'm a top rider jockeying for a positing in the overall standings, I'm grabbing a can of black spray paint and searching for any and all wheelsets in the Snowshoe area. I'd be asking for forgiveness later at this point. Yikes...

Does anyone have a clue of the average tyres pressures used on these tracks by the riders?
I guess the tyre casing has its importance as well... I was told my pressures were too low in Lourdes few weeks ago with my 1.5barsF/1.8barsR.... with light casing though (EXO).
  • 4 0
I think Bernard Kerr said in one of his LSD's he was running 27psi in the front. Not sure what that is in your French currency ;-)
  • 2 0
A lot of dh riders use between 22-24psi in the front and 25-28psi in the back depending on the rider/conditions.
  • 1 0
Depends a lot on your weight and like you said tire casing plus if you have inserts or not. I too run exo only and when I'm riding rocky DH I'm 1.85bar F 1.95bar R, no inserts. 85kg rider with gear.
  • 3 0
@Avelema27: I would imagine snowshoe is a high psi track. Lots of high speed smashing into rocks.
  • 1 0
 @K1maxX: Thanks man Smile
  • 1 1
@danstonQ: no worries. but to be honest without knowing the tire/rim/insert combination this is rather useless Wink
  • 1 0
This season has really delivered some epic racing. Great to see Reece take the win and it doesn’t get much closer than 0.032 secs…..the graphics gave the distance as 0.3m….that’s barely half the diameter of a wheel!!

Saturday’s final round is going to be wild.
  • 4 0
Vali’s time has come! next years world champ?
  • 14 0
I mean, maybe. But it’s pretty clear that Myriam is still the dominant rider, at the peak of her game with a good team and a good bike behind her.
  • 5 0
@kylar: Agreed. Myriam was crushing it until the fall. She seems like she is still the best rider. One win does not signal anything.
  • 6 0
@kylar: yes, Myriam is currently at her peak and the strongest rider with a lot of confident. But Vali is not the first rider winning because of a crash of a stronger rider. And as far as I remember at the beginning of the season Vali was the fastet all weekend in Leogang and did not win because of a crash. So I think that's OK.
  • 7 5
@kylar: Seriously? Without that mistake Myriam would have been 5 seconds up. She’s on a different level to the rest.
  • 3 1
@noox: I am not taking anything away from Vali's win today! she slayed it! I am responding to the original poster, I think while Vali's time will come, and she will be world champ. It's not quite yet.
  • 2 0
@jclnv: I put the maybe in because in DH you never really know. I remember watching the 2018 Losinj race and thinking " I dont know this Pierron fellow, but cool to see someone who is so stoked by 20th place!" We all know how that ended up turning out.
  • 3 0
Who knows, we may even see Rachel return? Which I think would be great with the field being so competitive now.
  • 4 2
@Jacquers: Honestly I hope she takes a couple years off for herself and her family.
If she wants it she's got years of top level racing ahead of her when she eventually comes back, as Minaar has shown us. Even with fitness or skills somewhat diminished Rachel could mix it up at the pointy end.
  • 2 0
 2 first time winners today
  • 3 4
@mobiller: Hopefully the women's field is strong enough that you can't just waltz back in after serious injury and serious childbirth in your mid 30s.
  • 5 0
@BenPea: If I had to guess, I'd think Rachel re-establishing herself at or near the top of the field would be the result of a lot of hard work, meticulous planning, and drawing on skills and experience honed over a long time and proven to have produced years of domination of the field in the past. As in, pretty much the opposite of waltzing.
  • 3 0
@g-42: I believe 100% she could come back to winning if she chose to go that path, regardless of how crazy strong the field is right now. Like you said she's got the experience, talent and work ethic

  • 4 0
@g-42: I could have phrased it better and I'd still like to see her try.
  • 1 1
@kylar: Can't be quite yet because world champs isn't for another 11 months. She's got just as much chance of getting it next year as she had of winning this race, and she won this race.

'her time will come. It's not quite yet' Nah, you're not a DH racing oracle mate, Her time has come she just won a world cup.

First win of many to come in Elite for Vali.

WOW WTF. My Fantasy team was just obliterated. Other than Bruni and Vergier doing well, HOW COULD ANYONE SEE THESE RESULTS COMING!!!!!!!
  • 4 0
I’m super stoked for Finn, and for Reece as well
  • 1 0
@Jadenrose28 Finn has actually been placing much better since he got hurt earlier this year. I think he might have finally backed off the "Banzai Charge" approach to racing and it's showing. Glad to see it.
  • 3 0
Yay BC boys Finn and Mark nice work ( and also Kirk 3rd fastest Canadian )
  • 3 0
I didn't realize how close Finn and Mark were in times.. Wallace had a ripper

Faster than Neko, faster than Blenki, less than 3 secounds to Brook and Mick. Fuck, if he had proper support and training for all those years, he could easily be top 20 regular.
  • 2 0
Did some math. Didn't know track length but based on a guessed average speed of 30mph. Probably less but hey. That 0.02 second lead equates to a 26cm advantage.
  • 4 0
Not bad for a freerider eh?
  • 1 1
No one is talking about the enve M series rim strip. I bet Thibaut either pulled the rightside bead off the rim strip or the rim strip itself came off the rim that led to folding up the front end and the rim breaking. Just my guess...
  • 2 0
 Enve sucks

f*ck their rim strip

No offense (peace)

  • 1 3
Haters gonna hate. Do any of the trolls have an inside connection at Riding Addition and know the set up their wheels, doubtful. Crushed for Thibaut, that didn't need to happen, but let's not forget, ENVE was the first carbon wheel to win a world championship and over all World Cup. Won two world titles this year and are leading the overall in men's, women's and juniors this season.
  • 3 0
The first to win a world cup and maybe the first to lose a world cup too, from what we've seen.
  • 2 0

Was the Junior Men's race filmed?
  • 23 0
No but they should probably start broadcasting considering the following some of these kids are building.
  • 7 0
@adamkat: Just get the camera rolling and throw it up on Red Bull TV. If it costs too much or is too complicated to do the commentary that's fine, start with raw video. Then eventually work in the commentary as the following grows.
  • 6 0
@adamkat: RIGHT?! It's very disappointing that they Don't broadcast the junior men and women!
They really need to start for sure! These kids are the future of the sport, they deserve it! Big Grin
