Final Results from the Snowshoe World Cup DH #2 2021

Sep 18, 2021
by Ed Spratt
Jordan Williams seems to be getting on well with the track in Snowshoe and backed up his win a few days ago with a fastest qualifier.

The results are in from a wild day of racing to close out the 2021 season. In the Junior racing, Izabela Yankova and Jordan Williams mastered the Snowshoe course securing the fastest times. Izabela Yankova dominated the Junior Women, with only Siel Van Der Velden coming within 20 seconds of the quickest time. Things would be a lot closer for the men. Despite a tight fight between Jordan Williams and Jackson Goldstone, times were wide open outside the top two riders.

After an incredible race of highs and lows, it's Vali Höll who wins again in Snowshoe and takes the 2021 overall title. Myriam Nicole crashed right at the bottom of the course and lost her chance at the overall. Marine Cabirou looks to be back at full speed after her injury taking second place. Camille Balanche completes the top three, five seconds back.

The Elite Men's race upped the drama as mistakes from Loris Vergier took him out of the running, leaving it to Loic Bruni as the last man down to fight for the title. Loic beat the incredible pressure and pulled just ahead of Troy Brosnan to secure the win today and the overall title in Snowshoe. Troy Brosnan had a return to form today with a second-place finish just behind Loic. Angel Suarez was almost unbeatable today, sitting In the hot seat for most of the afternoon.

Check out the full results below.

Really hope Blewitt is okay, that was a terrifying crash. Landed entirely on her neck, track red flagged. Doesn't look good
  • 6 0
 That was brutal.
  • 16 1
Shades of reece wilson getting sent out the front door but unfortunately she smashed into the up slope Frown

I cant help but think they red flagged mille johnsett way to late into her run.
  • 6 2
@McMeta666: Yeah agreed, I can't see why with so few riders they can't let them finish their runs before the next one starts. At least they'd get red flagged at the start gate then.
  • 14 15
I don’t understand how they let another rider start immediately after that crash. You’d think they’d relay info to the top to wait.
  • 42 1
@llaama: She was already on track. The crash was pretty far down. The intervals are 30-60 seconds I believe. They don’t have time in the day to let every rider have a full run before the next rider starts.

@McMeta666: 30 seconds gap means Mille was already almost alll the way down when jessica Blewitt crashed, same for Hoffman.
  • 3 1
 @kylar: got it, thanks.
  • 4 1
@ORTOGONAL555: Yeah i imagined that was the case but it looked like she didnt get a red flag until she was pretty much at the acident site. Considering it looked like blewitt went down and just didnt move at all before the camera cutaway i would have thought it would have been sensible to just throw the flag right then and there.
  • 6 2
It ain't over til it's over. Just fking unbelievable. Congrats vali, tough luck for pom... I bet she can already taste it.
  • 16 0
Is there any update on her status?
  • 1 0
I hope so too. I was near the bottom when they were getting her into the cart to get down to the ambulance. She was in a lot of pain. After talking to a course marshal, there was a slight misunderstanding at first about how badly hurt she was.
  • 16 1
@mtb1101: Absolutely gutted for Jess. One of the rising stars of our sport. She has a fractured lower leg & possibly fractured wrist & collarbone.
  • 4 7
I was right there where she crashed and it was a complete fail that the next two riders weren't stopped by the marshals. There were 1 minute gaps at the time so tell other riders on course. I heard she broke her femur and messed up her shoulder
  • 2 0
@THEBIKEFIX: wow, best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.
  • 2 1
@llaama: she crashed at the bottom. The next rider was already on track.
  • 50 3
@tim-from-pa: you do understand that that means that the marshall at the point where Jessica crashed had about 60 seconds to assess whether the situation called for a course hold, which also needs to be communicated to all the marshals further up on the course to be effective at all, which may not even be that marshal's call, thereby having to decide whether to interfere with the whole race and potentially the whole season, or whether Jessica could be safely moved of the course and be looked after outside the tape, while they would probably also be asking why they volunteered for the sh*** job in the first place....

Yes, this is a 6 line sentence, and it probably took you about as long to read and to discipher before deciding whether to hit reply as that marshal had to make their much more consequential decision. I hope Jessica is alright and I am gutted for Mille, she was on her way to a great result, but I cannot see a complete fail on on anybody's part in this situation.
  • 3 2
 @tim-from-pa:
Agreed. We were right next to.the double double and the TWO flaggers decided to actively not flag because they though the rider couldn't stop there. This was after the words non responsive and clusterf*ck had come over the radio
  • 5 0
@Andy-FFM: were you there? she was laying on the ground screaming right after the landing on the giant double near the finish. i guarantee there was plenty of time for the marshals to stop the riders on the flat just above where the last split was, the marshal up there even had his red flag out before the next rider but barely waved it and let two girls go right past him
  • 3 0
@tim-from-pa: I was there. I was a course marshal a good bit higher on the mountain (just below where the course crossed the lift). A few observations:
1. we were basically told red flags are last resort. reserved for un-responsive riders in the racing line. That makes you hesitant to pull it out.
2. it takes a while for the communication to make it up the mountain to all the marshals from the chief marshal, we do the best we can but we're all volunteers with different perceptions of what is the correct action to take. If UCI wants paid marshals that all have experience etc, they can do that but honestly it worked. Aside from the injured rider, the course got closed and only 2 other riders were on the course at the time.
3. the two riders that went past me with my red flag, IN THE TRACK and directly in their face, were very clearly just heading down to catch the lift back up. They were very aware of the red flag. Stopping right at the red flag does them no good. They have to get down somehow.. I was frustrated at first that they didn't stop but in hindsight it makes sense.
4. red flags basically at the end of the track are the worst scenario (from a race management standpoint), as you are much more likely to have other riders on course. Had this happened at the cupcake road gap up at the tip top, this would have turned out very different.

my two cents...

Update on Jess Blewitt after her horrible crash. Jess has a broken femur requiring surgery. She also has a broken collarbone, wrist , cracked rib & two small cracks in her lower back fortunately none of which require surgery. Healing vibes to Jess from all of us in the riding community.
  • 4 1
Crazy none of the other injuries require surgery. But the sound of someone breaking a femur is always the worst thing ever. Hate that I watched it live and couldn't know ahead of time. Hope that girl takes all the time she can in offseason to ease back into things. It's a lifestyle-altering crash to say the least.

  • 10 0
@zyoungson: it's a downhill track. It's meant to challenge. Take out the rocks, roots and jumps and you have a bike trail. We could all race that type of track. I did notice before Jess's crash, in the pedal section, her front tire looked a bit soft. I replayed it in slo-mo. She bump jumped a tree root, leaned to the left, just like a handful of other riders did. But, it sent her kinda to the right, which it shouldn't have. When her front wheel landed, it still went to the right, not sure if it was a rock or soft front tire that caused it. Looked like she was maybe cross rutted, and hit the lip kinda sideways and suspension fully compressed. I kinda think it was tire related. I've had stuff like that happen before with a soft front, it's a guessing game where you're going. That's just some bad luck. Hope she heals up and comes back stronger.
  • 5 0
@oldschool43: I too had a good look about fifty times in slo-mo on Youtube and you are spot on about her tyres moving around and they played a part in what happened next, which I think I've figured out. Her tyres drifted just as she's approached the lip, they've slid to the right as if she's gonna Bubba scrub the jump. As she's hit the transition of the jump, she wasn't able to put weight into the bars and her bars have come up under her chin. Essentially, her legs compressed the rear suspension but her arms did not compress the fork. So as she's going off the lip, the rear suspension has decompressed but the front suspension did not since it wasn't compressed at all, which means she is tipped forward and on such a long jump she just kept rotating while airborne.

And note this has nothing to do with rear rebound being too fast like people say on Friday fails, it is about a massive imbalance in decompression fore and aft which started a rotation as she's coming off the lip.

If I'm travelling at speed to a big hump, I can either absorb it with my arms and legs (I stay low), or I can push against the hump with my arms and legs and boost off it (I go high). But imagine what would happen if I absorbed it with my arms but boosted it with my legs? The front would stay low and the rear would go high = me getting airborne and rotating around my Z-axis. I think that's what happened to poor Jessica.

Obviously I'm not her, and there is no statement from her AFAIK, but this is how it looks to me at 0.25 speed at 22s on this video:

WHAT IS UP WITH SNOWSHOE!? Vali takes 2 wins and an overall off of big mistakes by the clear favorite. Obviously its the last race so it's likely to be exciting but the last second drama and overall changes. Amazing. Grats to that young lady.

Pretty cool watching Vali grow as a rider through the season because of the first two rounds' catastrophes. She seems to be in a better place for it. Also, would've almost been underwhelming if she'd come in and dominated from the start like people expected; same outcome end of season, but much more hard-fought and exciting.
  • 12 1
Absolutely, she really turned it around. It was nice to see a 20 years old learn so fast and get back into a positive groove and start enjoying riding again and subsequently winning again. She was visibly making an effort to be more positive and engaged with her fellow riders. A real positive story. Was critical of her myself, as were others, but couldn't be happier for her now. Can't wait to see her in 2022, she'll be unstoppable. Would be nice to see her and Myriam to head to head at every round.

  • 9 1
Very strange - during the live feed Vali didn't come into the frame and they didn't show her for a long stretch. I was pretty sure she had gone down! Crazy finish - congrats to all. Where my conspiracy theorists at?
  • 8 0
I think Rob said, they switched to showing more of the last riders' runs which messed with the timing of when we saw the start. They basically showed Vali's start earlier than they should have so had to wait for most of a minute for her to come to the first timing split. You can see how it works if you watch the UCI live timing at the same time as the TV feed. Related to this, it sounded from something Warner said that because of the delay from the women's race we got to see more of the earlier male starters.
  • 5 0
@The-Foiling-Optimist: Thanks - good intel. I was glad she hadn't crashed when the feed sync'd up

Damn two treks that broke chains??
  • 10 3
Trek doesn’t make chains bro… unless your trying to blame the idler pulleys which a couple editors here may agree with you .
  • 9 1
@pbfan08: When I read his statement, at no point did I interpret it as trek making the chains. Two treks did break chains. They were likely sram XX1, but they were still on the trek platform.
  • 9 0
It looked like Reece just dropped the chain not brake it. I blame the idler..
  • 2 1
Trying not to spoil anything if you haven’t seen the short track yet but another broken Trek chain at the start line! That is crazy, actually.

I wonder if there's enough material to make stats regarding high pivot, with flats for instance : Imagine the difference of force going through a tire that's moving forward to climb a sharp rock, and one that's on a rearward path.
  • 2 1
This is a good point. With a rearward axle path, the wheel still has to confront the square edge at some point and the further forward the riders mass is from the rear wheel the more it's pulling the wheel into the square edge

  • 4 6
Agreed Elliot has become a good commentator, he has developed and improved a lot over the season. Tracy on the other hand... It's hard to listen to, I really want her to get better as it is good to get the female racers perspective during the women's race, but the commentary isn't great.
  • 2 1

But commenting isn't easy. Friends will give feedback and she will improve.

  • 4 0
Technically it's her second season, but yea it kinda is the first time she got to race elites.
  • 6 1
Nicolas Vouilloz won the overall in 1995; technically this wasn’t his first elite season in the World Cup because, I believe, Juniors and Elite Men weren’t separate categories in the World Cup back then. But in 1994 he was still a junior in the World Champs race (where a separate category existed). If I remember righty he had the fastest time of the day, faster than Francois Gachet, who won the elite men category.

You can't beat 2019 Snowshoe. Every split Danny past changed the overall standings. It was nerve wracking top to bottom. Whereas Daprela was probably in a hospital bed by the time the race started. Was wild to watch Loris and Loic come down though. Snowshoe makes for a hell of a last race.
  • 3 0
I think you could hear the screams from Jessica Blewitt through the live feed after that crash. That was awful to see, hoping for the best.
  • 6 0
That was givin me PTSD. I think a lot of us have been through a traumatic stack. I NEVER watch friday fails. Every now and then you just come across a video of something like that and it's awful. You know how tough these athletes are, what they go through regularly, so to be stuck on the ground and only be able to holler in pain... And then the long delay, it's chilling. Hope she gets all the treatment and time needed to ease back in with the offseason. Insane what some riders storm through, like Luca riding with fractured wrist. I can't imagine. Especially at Snowshoe jesus...

No doubt she's super talented, but she seems quite similar to the way Gwin was. In a great mood with everyone when she's doing well but doesn't seem to have much time for the other girls when she isn't, maybe that's why they aren't as friendly with her? What do I know though, I'm just a viewer on the sidelines, it could be completely different!

  • 15 6

Only Tahnee - Myrian has been very nice to her. Don;t know what the bad blood is with Seagrave. Rachel wasn;t the most friendly with Tahnee either when she began challenging her. These women are competitors and not all feel like tossing the heart emojis around
  • 16 2
As far as I can see they all get along well. Valentina has made a lot of effort to fit in and enjoy riding and the competition, seems like she is fitting in very well. A lot of nerves and pressure today, plus the red flag will have unsettled everyone, and they'll no doubt be upset to have one of their fellow riders have such a massive accident. Everyone was a little stunned at the end, even us viewers. As far as I can see Valentina is polite and is visibly making an effort to be a good sport. Looking forward to seeing her next season. Sorry for Myriam as that must be hard to take - I am sure she'll be back stronger than ever next season.

  • 10 11
Really kind of disrespectfull commenting from elliot today, first few rides ist was just some random blablabla after barely mentioning the riders name.
  • 19 6
Elliott's commentating is great. Nice to have someone doing something other than just saying what is happening on screen. We can all see that already and Warner has it covered. Co coms is best when I gives background info and hype. Best thing to happen to the race coverage getting him onboard
  • 9 5
@hitmansam: I can‘t listen to Elliot. So disrespectful to riders and too much giggling.
  • 11 2
The fact that he laughed about Blewitt's crash should disqualify him from ever doing commentary again.
  • 3 0
@SuperGeek: didn't see the women's race. Did that actually happen? If so, very poor judgement.
  • 9 3
Very frustrating listening to these fill ins with Rob, even Nigel Page back in the Freecaster days was better in-sync with Rob than Claudio, Elliot or Tracey... Claudio just makes annoying noises, talks over Rob and contradicts him all the time, and if he's right when Rob's wrong he just doesn't let it go in every comment. Elliot just giggles and makes noises all the time too, has some good insights but overall doesnt offer much at all, worse than Claudio Tracey again always buts in with Rob and always saying sorry, keeps repeating the same thing over and over and stumbling over her words, the worst of the bunch. Reece Wilson on the other hand.... he has a long successful dh career ahead of him but will be a great replacement for Rob when the time comes, I'd love to hear Gee or Grandad in the box with Rob too, I think they would both be great
  • 2 0
@ctd07: the part that annoys me is that not every one is suited or good to improvise and comment on live tv, still instead of searching and trialling for talents they just stick on what's in and that's it.
