Elite Women

First up in the Elite racing is the Women and after the incredible short track race on Friday we could be in for some exciting racing. We are missing quite a few riders this week with only 36 riders, but we are still sure to see some great racing today.

The Pivot Cycles - OTE takes a tour of the course.

Race Updates:

9:21 am PDT The Elite Women are off with Jenny Rissveds leading into the first lap.

9:24 am PDT Jolanda Neff is showing off her skills in the wet as she masters the tricky conditions. Jenny Rissveds has made the most of leading into the woods as she starts creating a decent-sized gap.

9:26 am PDT Rebecca McConnell is having a nightmare start to the race as she is already 47 seconds back.

9:27 am PDT We now have a group of four at the front of the race led by Jolanda Neff. Kate Courtney sits just a few seconds back.

9:29 am PDT Jenny Rissveds takes back the lead as the fog is starting to get really thick.

9:32 am PDT After the first lap the top five are

1st. Alessandra Keller: 12:12
2nd. Anne Terpstra: +0
3rd. Jenny Rissveds: +0
4th. Jolanda Neff: +1
5th. Kate Courtney: +1

9:35 am PDT Jolanda Neff is flying through the wet woods making it looks easy.

9:37 am PDT We now have a US chasing group of Haley Batten, Kate Courtney, Gwendalyn Gibson and Savilia Blunk. They are around 13 seconds back at the moment.

9:41 am PDT Jenny Rissveds is putting the power down to build a three seconds gap at the front.

9:45 am PDT After the second lap the top five are

1st. Alessandra Keller: 24:06
2nd. Jenny Rissveds: +0
3rd. Anne Terpstra: +1

9:50 am PDT Alessandra Keller is setting a rapid pace but we still have a three-rider group at the front.

9:57 am PDT After the third lap the top five are

2nd. Jenny Rissveds: +1
3rd. Anne Terpstra: +1
4th. Haley Batten: +24

9:59 am PDT It looks like we may be getting some rain soon. If it comes down hard it will be interesting to see if it shakes up the race.

10:01 am PDT Mona Mitterwallner has made her way back to fourth place after a slow start. Mona is still 45 seconds back so it will be very tough to close this gap before the end of the race.

10:03 am PDT It is now raining on course let's hope this won't cause too much carnage.

10:06 am PDT Jenny Rissveds is starting to open up a gap at the front, could she be handling the wet weather better than the other riders?

10:09 am PDT After the fourth lap the top five are

1st. Jenny Rissveds: 47:46
2nd. Alessandra Keller: +3
3rd. Anne Terpstra: +11

10:11 am PDT Jenny Rissveds is unfazed by the rain and is still looking fast through the woods.

10:21 am PDT After the fifth lap the top five are

1st. Alessandra Keller: 1:00:05
2nd. Jenny Rissveds: +0
3rd. Anne Terpstra: +21

1st. Jenny Rissveds: 1:12:16
2nd. Alessandra Keller: +3
3rd. Anne Terpstra: +40
4th. Mona Mitterwallner: +1:00
5th. Jolanda Neff: +2:09

10:34 am PDT Disaster for Jenny Rissveds as she loses the front in a grassy corner. Alessandra Keller now leads.

10:37 am PDT Alessandra Keller looks to have the win as she has sprinted to a 17-second lead. Jenny Rissveds seems to be slowing down slightly.

10:40 am PDT What a final lap for Alessandra Keller she has built a massive lead of 31 seconds.

10:45 am PDT Alessandra Keller wins at Snowshoe and takes her first World Cup victory!

Elite Men

Next up is the Elite Men's racing where once again Nino Schurter will be on the hunt for a record-breaking win. Nino did have a massive crash in the XCC race so he may not be in contention for the win today. There is some very heavy rain at the moment in Snowshoe so we are definitely going to see some carnage on course.

XCC Highlights:

While we wait for the men's racing to begin check out the highlights from Friday's race.

Little plug for Sandra Walter in the women's XC. Never hear her name mentioned since she's not anywhere near podiums, but she was born in 1980 and is riding the full world cup calendar this year. She was the last rider to finish on the lead lap today, in 24th place. I know there have been other riders on the circuit in the past who were still getting big results in their later years (Gunn-Rita, Spitz and others) but the average rider age seems to be getting younger, so props to her for keeping motoring on.
  • 1 0
Totally! These YOB's are making me feel OAF.
  • 33 0
Its absolutely insane watching how relaxed Rissveds is when riding. Doesn't matter the terrain or pace, she just always looks composed. Amazing to watch.
  • 13 1
Agreed. Totally relaxed and chill. Very different then Keller who is animated and like a steam engine chugging away.
  • 13 0
@Thirty3: I like having some different riding styles to watch. Good on both of them.
  • 3 0
 @Ginsu2000: Darn right!
  • 9 0
Her riding position is also much more upright than anyone else. It's very distinctive.
  • 3 2
@irondad: yeah, she is way less stretched on the bike compared to some other riders. Surely must also help when riding steep descends.
  • 14 2
@Thirty3: If you haven't noticed Keller is also built very differently from almost if not all of the other ladies in the field.
  • 6 2
@Augustus-G: Both winners Keller and Valero are, as far as I know, the tallest riders in their respective fields. Just a weird quirk I think, but an interesting one. To win XC races usually means the highest power to weight ratio on the day. At her size and similar power to weight as other top women riders, she must be putting down a lot more power in absolute watts.
  • 17 20
@Ginsu2000: She's also carrying a lot of extra weight upstairs. It makes her CoG even higher.... Yes, it's Dead Weight that she's having to overcome and doing a heck of job at it too.
  • 6 8
@Augustus-G: Ha, yes l have. She has the same aerodynamics of Luma Diniz. More power to them both!

@Augustus-G: That is a very diplomatic way of putting it! I'll probably get canceled for saying it but she hugs different.

 @Augustus-G: definitely a different build

@Augustus-G: Outta here with this garbage.

You checking out the men's packages today as well?
  • 32 32
@suspended-flesh: @suspended-flesh: Let the pansies cancel away. Facts are facts and she is carrying at least twice the mammary tissue weight of nearly everyone else in the field. If you don't think that weight impacts the way she moves on the bike you're delusional. As for the down voters, I'm a man, I like Women, I notice these things, and it'll be a cold day in Hades when I apologize for it.
The Cucks can go turn in their Man Cards.

@Augustus-G: Thanks for letting us all attend your TED talk, professor.

I watched one of this season's XCOs with six women (all competitive riders and the odd runner) and they had the same discussion.
  • 11 13
@iamamodel: Do you also have a black friend?
  • 4 1
@irondad: Her riding position is very similar to both Absalon and Hermida in the late years of their careers...very upright.
  • 10 9
@aaronjb: The ladies undoubtedly check out our packages, and they don't try to police each other on it. Stop making everything a crime.
  • 4 7
 @aaronjb: I don't.
  • 5 1
@sonuvagun: I have a friend with ridiculous junk. We literally make him wear baggies over his lycra when there are young girls around. I did not realize that ALL the women had already noticed when our crew decided to ask him to "wear an apron or something".

@hellanorcal: But are you as brave as @Augustus-G, the Rosa Parks of standing up for the right to ogle breasts, to admit you also love looking at a dude's junk and won't be cancelled for it? Or, are you a "cuck"?

@hellanorcal: You're out here talking dongs my man. Don't act like I showed up at the opera in jorts and high on perc.

Was standing course-side on all of the technical descents and she never showed any signs of being flustered or anxious whatsoever. It was unreal to watch

 Blevins. Epic.
  • 15 0
That attack on the last lap was ballsy as hell with nearly a whole lap to go. Didn't quite work out today but great race by Blevins nonetheless!
  • 4 0
@bkm303: total bummer, but he showed a ton of heart. Emptied his tank and put on a great performance.
  • 4 1
Got to feel bad imploding literally three minutes from the finish line, but he can hang his head proud.
  • 3 0
@Mntneer: he said he started cramping really bad on the last climb... Such a horrible feeling when you still have the lungs to go hard but your muscles won't cooperate. He might have been a water bottle / salt tablet away from victory!

Hoping to see more from him in MSA though!
  • 3 0
@bkm303: I saw Blevins "miss the bottle" on the second to last lap feed zone. I am not sure if he was able to grab "the second bottle just in case" in the feed zone that Specialized usually had. In any case, Specialized Feed Zone Team was *on fire* Sunday. Blevins with glasses switching (behind the back into the crew), water bottle for cleaning derailleur (at least twice that I saw), and regular bottles held gingerly from the top (like it's supposed to be done)
  • 1 0
@hellanorcal: I was wondering about that too! But yeah it was really impressive how they were nailing all those handups. Between that and the quick wheel change that pit team has to be pretty stoked on how things went.
  • 4 0
He had a flat and was like 30 seconds behind and made it back up front quickly. That could have been the the difference at the end of the race?
  • 23 0
Savilia Blunk is the real deal.
  • 10 0
With a little more experience riding world cups she can probably become a consistent contender for high placings. The U.S. women did a great job out there today stacking the top 10 finishes.
  • 17 0
What a race! Gutted for Blevins! Would have been epic if he could have pulled out the win.
  • 16 0
When he pulled a gap through one of those last singletrack sections I thought his comeback from the flat was complete. Would have been incredible for him to pull off the Snowshoe double. All signs point to him being in a position to fight for other wins in the future though. Valero did a great job of burning his available matches at the right times.
  • 19 4
With the impending discovery takeover Im realizing that we wont have commentators who know all the riders personally and their history. This is the end
  • 24 0
There are literally hundreds of ex-pros they could approach.

The sport will undoubtedly be poorer without Rob Warner (for next season at least), but it's to early to call it over.

Better broadcasting capabilities makes sports better. Period.

As @HankHank says, there's plenty of people capable of calling a race that have lots of experience with the sport and the riders. At least give it a chance, if you dont like it then PM me. I can film the race on my cell phone from my TV and send it you. I'll make sure to only catch half the camera angles for you. I'll even cut out the feed every min or two for a second and make sure to miss any actual thrilling moments so you can feel like you're still watching Red Bull.
  • 4 0
@HankHank: Annika Langvad has been announcing at the Cape Epic the past couple of years and doing a fine job of it. Wouldn't that be something with her and Gunn-Rita Dahle or Maja Włoszczowska for the ladies? Talk about Inside the Tape Knowledge.
  • 3 0
@HankHank: is it 100% confirmed that warner will not broadcast races for discovery?
  • 1 0
@jtorrento: from what I've read he's staying under contract with Red Bull but no idea how long he's signed for. If Discovery and Red Bull are discussing his contact there's no way they'd say anything until a new deal is signed anyway, never say never

4 American women in the top 10 of a world cup race. I don't think that has happened in 15 years.
  • 6 5
Good result, no doubt, but how many of the top European riders were missing?
  • 13 1
@mrkkbb: The women in the 3, 6, and 9 places of the World Cup standings did not make the trip over from Europe. There are a couple of other riders like Ferrand-Prevot and Frei who are not in the top 10 but often pull some good results. Based on this info and the fact that the U.S. women generally looked like they had very good form for this race weekend, it probably wouldn't have made much of a difference. Maybe some pushed down a couple of positions, or maybe not. Results go to those who show up on the line. Woulda coulda shoulda is meaningless.
  • 16 0
@Ginsu2000: Yeah, Merckx once said something along the lines of, it doesn't matter who wasn't there, only who won.
Got to be in it to win it.
  • 1 1
On the subject of American women, Hannah Otto is listed as only 10 minutes back, but wasn’t she the one in the Team USA jersey that the leaders lapped on their third lap? Bart said she must have had a mechanical to be lapped so quickly. I really don’t see how she could have gotten back on the same lap as the leaders after that.
  • 2 2
@mrkkbb: no question lecomte, prevott, richards and others would have likely placed top 10 and therefore pushed people down. But I literally can't remember the last time 4 American women placed in the top 15 or even top 20 either. This is a resurgence no matter how you slice it.

Also if lecomte is skipping north american races every year then that is who she is and it isn't just an injury or whatever. She is not willing to race the whole season.
  • 1 0
@AndrewHardtail: Otto was not wearing a USA jersey, so was not the one who got lapped
