Greg Minnaar is a man on a mission here. 40 years old and just 1.5 seconds back in 4th

The 2021 DH World Championships are underway in Val di Sole, stay tuned for live results and updates.

Izabela Yankova kicked off racing today in Val di Sole with a huge win in the Junior Women's race as she bested second-placed Kine Haugom by nearly 11 seconds. Jackson Goldstone takes home the rainbow jersey from his first Junior World Championships after a great performance. There was a close fight with Jordan Williams, but Jackson would find 1.812 seconds on the British rider.

Myriam Nicole had a perfect run in the Elite Women's race to fly into first place by nearly five seconds. Marine Cabirou laid down one of the most impressive performances today as she fought through her injury from Les Gets to cross the line in second place. 2020 World Champion, Camille Balanche, didn't match her winning run from last year, but she still walks away from Val di Sole with the bronze medal after a great run on the tricky course.

The Elite Men's racing provided plenty of drama as Greg Minnaar takes his fourth World Championships title. Benoit Coulanges came close to taking the top spot, but he would have to settle for the silver medal as he came across the line 0.227 seconds behind Greg. Troy Brosnan rounds out the top three riders and is the only other person to come within a second of Greg Minnaar's winning time.

It was just a shame they only had one person for the Mens, they did the same for the XC, they had Oli Beckingsale for the Womans XC, again v good insight, training/kit etc, but then Just ONE person for the mens, and it was very boring! it was like they could not afford to pay them for the two races!

@hamncheez: Is he on hormone boosters I wonder. I guess the mental game is kept alive by not getting married and not having kids. Those are the things that slow your head down... but the body also slows down. 40 year olds have half the testosterone that 18 year olds have... I don't know how he keep pushing himself to that level of conditioning and doesn't fall apart. It is a remarkable feat.
  • 2 0
@jaame: peak endurance is not something you get in your 20s according to some circles I dont belong to.. and may be this helps him on a sport that is now pushing the limits of the athleticism in them.. I believe before, ~10 years ago it was still more dominated by technique/testosterone and basically being fearless... he has a mental game that combined with athletic performance actually allos him to use his head to control his body when others are fried holding on to the handlebars and making mistakes..long live the GOAT

This coverage is so f*cked. I've only started following world cups this year and i feel more qualified to speak about this race than this f*ckwit from the BBC. Not even mentioning that Reece Wilson blew his front tyre, confusing Amaury Pierron for Sam Gale in a very clearly NZ jersey, consistently calling the splits wrong?? But so glad he is telling me the bike is wobbling around.

I started counting a few times and got to 85 seconds after Danny Hart's run. Most of the time it was around 45-60 seconds. I don't think they even bothered putting proper cameras on the first 2 minutes except the start gate.
  • 2 1
@BigAlfonz: that’s typical because there are always multiple riders on track.
  • 4 0
@rockyflowtbay: I know that is an issue,
especially for early riders. But 10-20 were staggered by 3 minutes. The top 10 were staggered by 3:30 (winning time was 3:29). In theory they should have been able to show almost full runs.

If she hadn't crashed it would have been tight between her and Miriam Nicole!
  • 9 10
@Intense4life: is there a point where, regardless of past results, she isn't of value to a sponsor financially. Sport is absolutely full of athletes who didn't make the transition to seniors. Incredible how many people across so many sports all across the world totally fell off a cliff. It is possible she may not get into a winning form. Look at AG, he was (and I feel can be again) insanely fast, just unreal. Yet he could never get the champs gold, even in the years he was mind blowingly fast.
  • 9 3
@SintraFreeride: that’s not how racing works
  • 14 2
@mccarthyp: my guess is she will reach her full potential. That said she’s gotta slow down. She’s simply trying to hard. She’s not ready to race for the win. Her goal shouldn’t be #1. She should think top 8. Then top 5. Get some consistency the slowly add speed with experience. Like I said. Respect the competition. The pressure is getting to her. She quality’s well but I think she’s riding quali in her high 90% of skill. Her quali times don’t win. When she steps on it on Sunday she’s quickly over the line and slams. If she doesn’t come to terms with slowing down to speed up she’ll be in trouble as her body fails. My hopes are with her but right now she’s just a big ol bull smashin dishes.
  • 5 2
@Intense4life: I hope so. I'm a massive believer in not having to necessarily like an athlete to be immensely thankful for the opportunity to witness their superior performance. Always thought it odd when people disliked Schumacher when they should have been in awe. My concern for Vali is that young people change so much in their late teens and early twenties that if she doesn't get her head in the game and stop making things unnecessary difficult for herself, she may lose her performance. If that happens, how long has she got until deals run out and it is hard to find a new package. Sponsors are first and foremost about business and getting a return on their sponsorship investment - can't run a glossy advert in a bike magazine saying your athlete was super fast a year or two or that they topped timed training or quali. Because the reader will just flick over a few pages and see Myriam Nicole on top of the box with a gold medal. Also, I feel she is prompting a discussion about what we can expect of young people, is it a disservice to young riders like Oisin O'Callaghan and Thibaut Daprela who are younger and under similar pressure but speak so well and treat everyone with respect. Being able to handle the mental aspect of competition is a major part of it. If a rider cannot handle that then can one really say they are the full package. All very interesting. I hope she does come good, but I think she needs to be held to a higher standard than she is now as she is an elite senior rider.

I blame her 29er wheels, i feel that it's too fast and too big for her to muscle around.
  • 3 0
Folks, not sure I get the concept of down-voting a question. I think Vali is an amazing talent and I hope she gets her win soon. I am asking what happens if two years go by without success. Absolutely 100% same question that we think about Gwin. For example, if some of the PB contributors manage sponsorship and advertising budgets for major corporations, surely you are sticking your neck out if you sign a big name athlete after two or three years of no wins. Like the saying that nobody ever got fired for buying IBM.
  • 4 0
@mccarthyp: I like your Schumacher question. In my opinion, a lot of fans want entertainment first. They are drawn by the engaging personalities and the romance of the sport. The highs and lows, joy of victory, agony of defeat. People like to watch characters. It's about the charisma and how the personality comes over to the fans.
No one would be in awe of a robot winning every race in F1, because winning does not visbly ignite passion inside robots. That's where Schumacher and every other sportsman with next to no personality falls down with the fans. He didn't convey any joy or pssion when he won. Even that contrived jump into the air he would do on the podium looked like a German PR person told him to do it to make him seem more human. It wasn't from the heart. That's fine - everyone isn't the same - but it explains to me why so many people groaned when he won, again. Same as Gwin. He's just not a cool guy, and he won too much in a short space of time.
No banter + too high a proportion of wins in a season = a lot of peeved off fans.
  • 1 0
 @jaame:
I will add the caveat that toooooo much personality is even more contrived these days i.e. too many people make an effort to impose their persona or interject their "personal story" onto every event they can. Sometimes we just want to see a good old-fashioned race and what it brings out of people.

But what you wrote is fantastic -really well put.

I wasn't fully convinced the last time he commentated but I really liked him today, he seemed really genuine and good natured. I'd like to see Claudio there too, that'd be the dream as each of the three bring something different.

I'm watching in Switzerland. You need to go to the main event page, click on an event that has already finished (eg. one of the XC races) and then go to the live event from that page, instead of just trying to play the live event.

What a race. I was out with the family. We stopped in a little town over the north west of Scotland where I somehow had 4G. The locals gave the guy in his car shouting at his phone and celebrating when Greg took the win some right strange looks. What a day, walking with the family in the sun shine around the mountains, watched the end of the world cup, the blue side of Glasgow won the old firm and we saw some awesome waterfalls. Tomorrow is back to work though!

  • 30 0
 @ColquhounerHooner: UCI, not RB.
  • 16 0
@ColquhounerHooner: UCI sold the rights...it's a one package deal...road with mtb...RedBull has slowly been buying the MTB rights as they have come free to put into RedBull TV. It's just that some territories still have rights owned by terrestrial TV providers.

Red bull is our friend here. In some countries another company already has the rights to airing the world chumps so red Bull can’t. Most of these companies are not free to air so you’d have to pay. Red Bull has the rights to all the other DH World Cup races just not the worlds

The video coverage of the track is trash. Only get to see the riders leave the gate, and then the last 30 or 40 seconds.
  • 8 1
I spoke too soon. Way better for the top 10 riders Smile
  • 16 3
@BucketB: No offense, but when do people start to understand this?

You can (at most) have as much screentime per rider, as their start interval. Say they start every 30sec, you only have 30sec per rider to show.

Sure you can increase the start interval but then the competition lasts longer.

If you think about it you will find alot of solutions for this "problem" of yours, but then continue to think and you will find out, that none of them seems a good solution:

- Longer start intervals
- Shorter tracks
- No Start coverage
- No finish coverage

Not trying to insult. I just read the same after every race and it kinda irritates me that people don't get this.
