@rory: It can be tricky to find the live stream and replay. Wish Pinkbike could give us the link during race day.
  • 1 1
It sometimes takes the replay a few hours to arrive on redbull
  • 5 0
@david-kooi: Yeah, it seems strange they no longer post it. Copyright issues of some sort, maybe? What's more, I find redbull also seems to bury it in their site sometimes too. I had to google search and find the link on another site.

Anybody know if there's a rationale for not making it more readily available?
  • 1 1
They have changed the layout. It's generally in the calendar section.
  • 2 1
@rory: if you go to Red Bull TV then 'past events' it's the easiest way to find it without risking spoilers.
  • 2 1
 @RedBurn: Thanks m8!!
  • 1 1
@david-kooi @rory if you want to find the replay without visiting a biking website and possibly spoiling the results, just Google search "2016 Leogang World Cup", or whatever the location is that weekend, and it will be one of the first results. Add "replay" into the search query if it doesn't come up.

  • 55 19
@MJ4LIFERIDER: Don't forget Loic Bruni. If he was there, Gwin would have a run for his money!
  • 121 16
@cool3: starting to feel like the Loic thing is overplayed...he won one World Cup riding on the hairy edge of control before getting hurt...maybe just let Gwin have the credit for being the very best right now...not always...just now.
  • 28 10
@AaGro: I think Loic may have won something other than one world cup....
  • 17 6
@mgolder: you are absolutely correct...and a world championship...of course which Gwin doesn't have...I was focusing on this year and probably should have cast my net wider.
  • 71 4
@AaGro: I think your comment was perfectly just, Bruni needs to ride balls out to get near Gwinn which is why he falls off so much, in my opinion that means he's not as good as Gwinn.
I'm sure he'll get there, he's still young, but until he can learn to ride that fast and within his limits regularly he shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Aaron.

Also I don't think World Champs should be a measure of how good a rider is, I mean just look how long it took for Peaty to get those stripes.

  • 14 2
@pimpin-gimp: agreed but he's the only one there on that psycho pace and he's learning to put it together. Gwin is the only one currently who makes riding psycho pace look controlled, amazing
  • 16 3
 @pimpin-gimp:
At the first WC Loic did look wild as f*ck, but that shows how much he wants to win. And that's such an awesome thing to see. The fact he was pushing boundaries that day shouldn't be held as a negative comment towards him, saying things like, 'oh, he's young and has to mature/has much to learn' etc etc. That's bullshit. He went into that race wanting to smoke the competition, and unfortunately got unlucky and crashed.

Yeah, as it stands Gwin is probably the best rider in the world. But how is the world going to be welcomed with a better rider? By pushing boundaries. Loic, or anyone else in this matter, isn't going to become better than Gwin by holding back and riding more safe and well into their comfort zone. You only get better by pushing yourself.

'Shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Aaron'. Who do you deem worthy of being mentioned in the same breath of Aaron? Thor, Freyr, Odin?
  • 10 0
@Jack-McLovin: I think the difference between Aaron, Loic, Greg, Ratboy and others is that some show how hard it is to ride at this level, and some make it look easy. There is no doubt that Loid is balls-fast....but he has to hang it out to ride at the level of some of these guys.

Video and outcomes don't lie.
  • 3 0
Hey, Odin got rid of the Ice Giants okay, he doesn't need to be god of everything.
  • 6 0
@pimpin-gimp: I think you are right on spot. As far as I want him to win, he always seems to be outside his comfort zone, while Gwin is rarely. For that, I think there is quite a difference between these two riders. Maybe Bruni is lacking either a bit of experience/maturity/talent.
While this kind of "everything or nothing" attitude makes for very breathtaking drama on course, I'm afraid this is not a sustainable style. Just take a look at the winningest and oldest males and females riders, they ride very smooth.

I have no particular sympathy for Gwin but we have to give the man credits for currently being the #1 in terms of speed and consistency.
  • 6 0
 @pimpin-gimp: @AaGro:

I'm glad you guys noticed this about Loic too.

Nothing against Loic. Just an observation. I've met him twice and he's a fine lad, but he's not the first to do what he's doing now: ride way out on the edge and fall off it a bit. Once he learns how to feel where that edge is, he'll really start putting wins up on the board.
  • 4 0
@frankwizza: I think Fearon was like that last year also. Fast but barely in control. Like an unstable element....

...or Eddie Masters (LOL).

Seriously, Connor at Lenzerheide last year was quick but couldn't hold it together.
  • 17 5
What are you guys even talking about with your 'bruni all out on the edge with lots of crashes' crap?
You must have seen different races than me, I guess.
This is Loics' first ever injury on a bike, and it was only a matter of time for that to happen. Stevie, ratboy, hill they all had the exact same thing happen to them, because it's part of the game. Being young and surfing the perfect wave you are losing respect for the dangers, and naturally this is when you get schooled.
However, before his collarbone fracture he barely had a crash, one or two supper little slips if at all... And that while being pretty much the only rider in recent times who came out of junior and was instantly a super consistent contender for the win with a solid #2 overall while even dealing with huge amounts of bad luck over the whole season. Bruni is definitely next level. I can't think of any junior rider with an equally strong mental game. Let's just hope that the injury doesn't change this for him.
Having said that, Gwin is still an absolute beast performing black magic on a bike. But I can see his power diminishing, when the young frenchies learn to use the force to its full potential. Just as a reminder: danny hart and blenki were seen as young contenders too as they were junior champs... But in the mens field they still struggle to this very day. Now go and watch Loic and Loris again.

  • 7 0
@stacykohut: his mental game - focus, situational awareness is probably like grandmaster Jedi level. To him there is nothing but him, his bike and the track. It's like all elite competitive atheletes in the zone. Letting it all hang is great raw talent abounds at this level, but without the mental and fitness game you never going to be the top of any sport.

Tiger Woods in the high point of his career changed the game of golf where golfers started to look at fitness as important part of their game. Golfers already had the talent and mental part down, but along comes this young kid who could play a consistent game, strike a ball with power and control and not even be winded. Gwin I think will bring a shift to Downhill world where training will include as much mental preparedness as physical and bike skill.

But then again I am just speculating, he could be a android sent from the future Big Grin ...

@cuban-b: kinda funny the guy with the name cuban wins the cigar.

no alcohol.

the sport is getting the point with the bikes and everyone basically having the same trainer/fitness levels that it comes down to the little things.

unfortunately/fortunately depending on your age ,view point and history with the sport, this is whats happening now in dh mtb.

sx/mx goes thru these cycles of natural talent and balls vs hardwork and training, and eventually it settles into a mix of both.

right now in dh mtb if ya wanna hang with gwin you better be equal on all fronts.

the no sauce really does help with some little things that really do add up.
sleep, ability to recover, ability to absorb nutrition properly, mental game, stress, hydration, recharging of the human electrical system, etc.

he is the mix of pure talent and pure hardwork/discipline.

i really think alot more dudes could go as fast as gwin if they just left the wobbly pops until the true of season.
get loaded nov to april.

may to oct.....stay sober, it gives ya a fighting chance against these gnarly tracks, back to back weekends, harsh travel, colds and flu,and the oh so on point, mr gwin.

god damn i love bench racing..............

what a race run by gwin. the dude truly is gnarly in that ricky carmicheal kinda way. full commitment to the job at hand. doing everything to gain whatever advantage ya can, even if it means changing some social/cultural habits.

other people will win races, but gwin on this bike, with his lifestyle..................its gonna be interesting.
  • 4 1
@Ryanrobinson1984: I don't see it that way. In Ft. william Gwin got beaten by Minnaar. In fact, Gwin was never so beatable in a winning season of his... Out of 4 races he got beaten in 2 by several different riders. In Cairns Bruni pulled 3 full seconds out of him. And for now, the only reason Gwins winning margin is as strongly increasing, is, that Bruni as the No.1 contender is out.
But yeah, I certainly don't want to undermine Gwins performance... He is still #1 and for good reasons. And I love that he is on his best way to become champ on the YT.
However, I do see Bruni and even Vergier coming for him in the near future. For me, the question is not if but when, and it depends on how well Bruni can get over his injury physically and mentally. Until now, Bruni made it look so easy not only to be up there, but to stay up there. He has nothing to lose, but only to gain and is putting pressure on the rest of the field.
On the other hand Gwin is not finished with his riding carreer by a long shot, I definitely see him break Minnaars record. Put under pressure I'm sure he will, once more, find a way to step up his game in the following seasons.

Thanks for the "free" broadcast and all, but kind of a BIG fail this time RedBull. ANYONE could have told you that the clearcut section would be critical to the race, but you didn't see fit to cover it well or even show any of it for most of the racers. We have all seen the bottom 1/2 of this course about a million times. Not having solid coverage of such a critical section is a MAJOR FAIL.
  • 15 2
I couldn't believe the director chose to show every rider through the flattish jump section and over the 'community service' rock garden, rather than showing them all through the clearcut section. WTF!!
  • 8 2
@metaam: last year everyone wanted the flat section as of gwin won in that part as did the same thing today, he won the race in that section.
  • 11 0
I found the cameras pretty cool, cable and moving things, long and wide shots. so much better than cairns. Would have liked to see the upper part better also, but well
  • 5 1
They even used to use a line cam for the motorway jumps. That's one camera. Now there are 4 or 5 just to cover that one section. Complete waste of resources. To add, if a rider chrashes or has a mechanical and is out of contention, go back up the hill and show the next rider. Don't waste air time to show a rider with a flat putt down the hill while I'm missing the next riders first 2 splits.
  • 2 0
@mtnbykr05: You do realise its delayed not "live"... you see the same amount of each rider whether they flat or not
  • 2 1
@rrsport: the top 20 are live. Each rider goes down in 1 minute intervals up until that point, 3 min after for the top 20. So if a top 20 rider flats 2 min into his run, I don't to watch him crawl down the mountain, for a 5 min run, when the next rider left the gate 2 min ago, and the entire top section (which is usually filmed) is completely unseen by the viewer. This happened many times where only select riders did we see the fresh-cut section. They even back-played footage we didn't see for a rider's replay. This is even easier with the 1 minute intervals, as the cameras are always rolling, and footage is already captured, just add it into the already edited footage.
I really think it's a lack of use of available resources and poor cameramen. How many times have we missed an important part of the race, because the camera man was creeping on some girl in the crowd, or his is camera pointed at the ground? Minnaar's mistake in the rocks this last weekend is the perfect example. We missed it entirely, but the footage was rolled back to a different camera after his run to show it because the cameraman that should have captured it had his cam pointed off somewhere random in the woods.
  • 1 1
So where's Rob Warner in all of this? I'm sure he has his own prep work to do, but maybe he could give the director a few ideas. Someone on PB must have a way of getting hold of the guy. He's likely just as bored as the rest of us when watching a racer nurse a damaged bike to the finish.

  • 21 1
@skelldify: There're probably quite a few reasons the UK produces more DH racers. For one thing it's easy to travel to a race every weekend in the summer, and the country is so small the national series is relatively cheap to compete in. A lot of prime mtb terrain is also owned by the Forestry Commission, who are pretty pro bike. Add to that the fact that the weather is unpredictable enough to be challenging, but mild enough to ride year round, and you have the ingredients of a competitive scene.
  • 2 2
 By over 3 secinds
  • 2 2
@rsbromley: True, but I think the main thing in America is that it's too difficult not to become a full time free rider rather than racer. One thing I've noticed about the UK and USA is that the USA has a lot more free ride style places like Coast Gravity, or just places in general where you can build big ass features etc.
At my local we're not allowed to build big jumps and we're also not allowed to use wood in our jumps, or build wooden features at that. It is Forestry Commission land so we have to abide by their rules.
This means I/we spend more time riding on the ground rather than up in the air. I know if I went to america I would just play around on big jumps all day everyday doing tricks and shit lol.

@sevensixtwo: US hell non Euro racers are not given the same opportunities. European Jrs get the chance to race world cup level race courses. Euro races get to train on World Cup level courses. There aren't as many true WC courses outside Europe because the European Cycling Institution opps I mean UCI makes it so hard for races to get slots outside Europe. It to expensive for teams to bring a bunch of non Euro racers to try and work up the JR or SR level ranks so those opportunities go to European racers. Gwin got lucky to get discovered and be at a time when there were races in North America in order to get some experience and show he had potential. If he had not done so well right of the gate he might never got the chance he got.
  • 4 1
@mfoga: @mfoga: yes, your opinion makes a lot of sense
beiing that as australia and new zealand are so close to europe that's why they are so many good riders from there.
stop making excuses, it is what it is
you don't need to host a wc to have a wc worth track, for example, here in Portugal we have loads of good track's, hell, even all the european fox athelets were flown here to test suspension ( www.facebook.com/GeeAthertonMTB/videos/vb.253605738020905/971798399534965/?type=2&theater).
we have wc worthy track's, we are in europe , so all you need to have good wc riders, but as our federation doesn't support the rider's whel enough, or we basicly don't have support from the industry by beeing a small market, whe have 3 guys that race the WC Emanuel Pombo, Francisco Pardal and Vasco Bica, and one ews rider Zemanelborges.

last year with world champs in Andorra(1110 km away) our federation only took 2 riders, other rideres, elite women and juniors, wanted to go payed by their pocket's and they weren't let to race by the federation
  • 3 0
@tiagomano: Check how many AUS and NZ racers there are sure, they have a few top guys. Did you not read hell non Euro racers? Out of 172 entires I count 46 that are non Euro licenses holders. Of those who qualified is like less the 25% non euro. I bet there are lots of deserving AUS and NZ racers who aren't given a shot. It's defiantly more popular there. You can't deny having majority of the events there isn't a huge advantage.

Not sure why you added the whole idea of distance to Andora, not sure if your saying it close or far, I would guess your saying it close as that not that far IMO.

  • 1 1
@mfoga: it's the closest race (exept when there was vigo) and i puted that, for you to see that it isn't for beeing an euro country, and has this happens here there are other country's that happen the same

but if you think that 46 registrations out country's non euro is few, you should count how many are from each country, garantee you if you take Uk and france that are the exeption it won't be that many, even if they are from across the border

Gwin rules in Leogang!! Loris Vergier has demonstrated that he is a serious threaten. I can picture his mate raising hands to celebrate at the end of Loris run and forgot he has a broken collarbone ... Yay!!! ... ouch!

Congrats to Gwin. Serious question here...is it part of his contract with YT that he doesn't do any religion talk in his interviews? He thanked Fox, thanked his team and that was it. Seems strange that he toned it down to zero god thanking

As an atheist I have to say who cares? Being humble is not a trait that has to be exclusive to those whom are religious. Something some of the commentators on here could learn from.

@mixmastamikal: I won't mention my belief or lack of cause that's irrelevant. I admired how he wasn't shy about his religion even though it was off putting for a lot of people. No matter the belief I respect people with strong principles and convictions. I don't respect a sellout which is what I'm suspecting Gwin has become. Maybe I'm wrong but it's food for thought
  • 6 0
He got a lot of hate for it, so it makes sense he'd tone it down
  • 3 2
@src248: exactly my point...would you censor yourself because of people you don't even know?
  • 4 6
@mrgonzo, do you mean Gwin's God doesn't exist? Chose your words wisely I have a chainsaw of a shitstorm down my troll sleeve...
  • 1 0
Hold on. I think we're onto something here. Gwin is 100% confirmed cheat, he is using god to give him a helpful nudge down the trails to win...
  • 3 1
I think last time he mentioned God, he got a huge amount of hate (it was an article on here about his off-season, and him building a new house), so he probably decided to tone it down for that.
As an atheist, I really don't get why people hate so much on religion, they should realize it plays a major role in action sports.
It probably helps to know there's a big man who's got you sorted out whatever happens, before you throw yourself off a cliff on a bicycle/dirtbike/wingsuit/unicycle/hoverboard/...
If you watch MX or SX, there's sooooo many interviews where riders thank God, half the field there is probably religious.

I'm so glad that an all powerful, all knowing entity is spending it's time helping somebody ride a bike down a hill marginally faster than some other people instead of you know, actually doing something meaningful like stopping war, disease, hunger etc

@fabdemaere - I find it sad that such reasonable and wise ArchBishops of the Church of Science like Krauss or Harris engage themselves in straight forward bashing of religion, Christian religion in particular. Yes we do not need religion anymore for any evolutional reasons anymore but it's been instrumental for development of human beings. If you were a viking, deployed on a beach of unknown land you had to have that motivation to go forward and face the resistance, to go into the woods at all. You had to have that in the back of your head that dying doesn't matter, you had to be willing to die. Imagine standing in the first row in front of 10k strong army of men and being told you go nowhere after we die and sun will swell and burn Earth anyway. War, the butchering, has progressed man kind like no other thing, so I really don't get how Sam Harris can benefit from his tweeter feed or Krauss looking at space through telescope and say that we would be way better if we abandoned religion long time ago. This is insane, those guys should be dropped in Fallujah or other bloodbath and see for themselves that it is a comfort of current Western civilization that makes religion obsolete, not some higher values of being uber rational. I'd like to see Bill Naigh or Krauss going through their day and week to see how fkng smart they are when camera is off, what rational choices they make in their daily living.

@mrgonzo As to Gwin and God, where was this rationality and absence of deity when all those great men died this year?! Hey Pinkbiketheists - Where were your wise mouths when everyone was going R.I.P.?! Nothing wrong with people expressing their grief but if you are to laugh at Gwins or anyones religious beliefs (which are completely harmless in such instance) then get some composure in your attitude and shut the hell up. This is ridiculous and carries signs of bigotry
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: not sure why you mentioned me in this reply, I'm not bashing anyone's religion and in fact I respected Gwin hugely when he was standing proudly by his beliefs even when it turned away a lot of potential fans. Maybe he's just not friends with the big guy upstairs anymore or maybe he toned it down because his new bosses at YT told him to, or maybe he really wants to be accepted by teenagers around the world.
  • 1 0
@mrgonzo: the issue here is: this is a deeply personal thing. Let's say that hypothetically you have an issue with your mom that you call her everyday and ask her for telling you that she loves you. Is it ridiculous from most peoples perspective? YES. Would it be cool if it came out and we started laughing at you for it? Off course NOT. If he'd be an otrhodox Muslim and encouraging clitoris mutilation then we'd have a different discussion, but his expressions of being thankful to whatever he understands as God (where we don't know what he means) is just some talking about what happens in his head. Since I was like ten, I am still fantasizing about a whole planet where humanity moves to in 2100, they had some wars, they have heli racing like F1 racing, I like to trip there in my day dream. And so fricking what? Big Grin

Also got a lot of hate for not saying anything pertaining to SS in any media, interviews, on kit, etc. Total silence. Instead posts about how his bike rolls over rocks.... Some fans seem to be annoyed about it. Wonder if the team just decided to ignore it completely.
  • 1 0
@atrokz: what we need is a racer like Polish driver Kubica from Formula 1, before he messed himself up. He was simply doing his thing and telling fans who didn't like something to go fk themselves, and that's great because that's what many "fans" deserve. If someone has issues with things like that he really needs to be put in place. For his/hers own good.

@WAKIdesigns: Not necassarily bashing, but I just don't understand why Gwin, or anyone in this case, thanks some 'god' for their achievements when they should be thanking themselves and those people that surround them that truly make shit happen.
'Oh I would like to thank god for coming first today'. No, you should be thanking your team, your mechanic, your personal trainer, your family, and yourself for having the drive to succeed.

It's like that stupid women who's kid fell into the Gorilla enclosure. She wrote on Facebook afterwards thanking god for keeping her child safe. Like f*ck off, go thank the poor zoo keepers that you technically forced to shoot and kill the Gorilla because you can't keep your kid under control.
  • 1 0
@Jack-McLovin: he thanked his team, sponsors and mechanic on numerous occasions. Meeting him in person and talking to him I can say that in comparison to other guys from the circus, he seems particularly decent. So for me he can thank Allah. I also don't like Anti-theists (very different from atheists) so whoever pisses them off I am all for him.

I am personally thanking my dad for telling me I am stupid and laughing at me quite often. Thanks to that I can laugh at myself and don't give much sht about what people think of me. It's hard for them to beat the level of ridicule my dad gave me.
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: Never said I was laughing at you?
And also why do you dislike anti-theists?
  • 2 0
@Jack-McLovin: because they are same sort of bigots as Christians, they are just on another team. Atheists are not supposed get organized, don't arrange conventions and preach the evil of Christ and crimes of Vatican like that Hitchens a*shole. They just go along without the concept of God. The same thing that makes me an atheist is the thing that make me agolfer, afootballer or ataxidermist. No sorry, I am not afootballer, I am an anti-footballer because football fans are bigots. I despise all sets of behaviors triggered by seeking affirmation in one group of people by bashing another.

Gwin's bike looks so damn stable. It's like he uses body as the suspension and the fork and shock only have a little give so he doesn't get bucked off. Just fast and mean the whole way. Damn

+ its a fully OUT OF THE BOX !! 5000€ and you have his bike ! Unvelievable ...

@RedBurn: in terms of the frame yeah. His suspension is clearly not stock at all and is tuned for his requirements.

  • 3 3
It makes you wonder though. After riding boxxors for a while, I found they were a bit shit. I highly doubt the internals on the boxxors are the same for their pro athletes, likewise goes for Fox as well. Correct me if I'm wrong.
  • 1 0
@mgolder: It wouldn't make sense for most customers at yt to send out their bikes with Gwins setup. But Rad means usually that he has a custom shimstack and maybe a future cartridge or different ports somwhere.
  • 1 1
@tabletop84: You seem to not be grasping the simple point that Gwins bike is not a stock off the shelf bike at all. The frame is stock. Everything else is not what a normal customer will receive at all.
  • 2 1
@mgolder: and you seem to have missed the interview with Yt-Chief-Engenieer Stefan Willared which says that the bike is stock except for a few airchamber spacers in the shock. Why would E.13 make special parts for him? All parts he runs are relatively new so I don't expect some prototype testing just yet.
  • 1 0
@tabletop84: Big shock, a man from YT was at pains to stress just how stock the bike is. Of course he would say that.Go through a list of his parts on his own bike, and see how many of them come stock on the bike from YT. People can't say 'oh it's stock, except for . . . .'. It is either stock or it is not. And his bike is not. The frame is, everything else is not as it would be when you buy it.

Brakes. Tyres. Blackbox shifter. RAD shock. Safe to say his fork will have it's own tune for him or also be a RAD unit, so again, not stock at all.

So no, that bike is not what the customer gets direct from YT. It is an amazing bike, but not the same.
  • 2 0
 @mgolder:
I very much doubt any of it is stock. The frame could be made out of a different kind of carbon, the tyres may be made from another compound that is not available to the public, different grip compound, etc. After all, they will be doing everything they can to give him an edge.
  • 2 0
mgolder is right you guys, hate to break it to you. Gwin is running prototype TRP brakes, not the stock off-the-shelf version. It's already been known that he has raced on prototype non-production E13 products. He has been known to be running prototype HT pedals quite a bit. His suspension is absolutely not the stock tuning. When the engineer said that he was only using air spacers and that the fork was stock otherwise, he meant that there were no custom parts inside. Like valves and pistons etc. He most definitely has a custom shim stack tune on both the fork and shock. Shims are considered consumables, an engineer will still consider a fork stock if it has a different shim stack configuration, because you're not actually changing any of the parts on the shock. Just a different shim stack. Who knows what other secret stuff they have going on with that bike. This is Aaron fucking Gwin we're talking about. The future GOAT. The highest paid mountain biker in the world. These companies are going to pull out all the stops for the this guy
  • 1 0
 @Jack-McLovin: @mgolder: @csermonet:

you guys just don't get it. Of course he might test some protoype-stuff like the brakes with the cooling fins now and then but considering that the X2 just came out I doubt they are testing a completely new design in there. And a changed shimstack does only mean that the fork is setup for AGs needs. I made several custom shimstacks for myself. But to think that any weekend warrior would profit from the suspension setup from a pro racer is stupid. Therefore if you buy the bike from YT you can set it up to your needs and its basically the same bike as AG rides but with a setup suitable for a normal rider.

Its also very unlikely that Yt made a custom mold for AG because that would cost a few 100k and is not needed because the geometry is on spot for his height and in comparison with other race-bikes on the circuit. Even Trek did only an alumium rear-triangle for Gee or SC and Specialized with their custom links because its way to expensive. So consider every carbon-part on AG-bike stock because apart from wheelbase you can change the goemetry settings with angle- or reach-adjust headsets or concentric shock bushings and custom links like SC and Specialized do.

He's also not even sponsored by Maxxis so why would they make a custom grip compound for him?
  • 1 0
@tabletop84: It is you who doesn't get it. He runs parts that are not on the stock bike. Therefore the bike you buy off YT is not 'the same' as Gwins. It isn't difficult to understand. Also a RAD part is not stock, regardless of whether you personally think Fox couldn't possibly have given one of their riders a tweaked version of a shock. Which is just plain wrong if you think that.

Also, nobody has said he has a custom frame? So why are you mentioning that as if anyone did say it. So that 'argument' can just go away now.

And to say that no rider apart from a pro would benefit from a custom setup suspension is just plain hilarious and wrong.

His bike is not the same as the one you can buy off YT. Simple.
  • 1 0
@mgolder: no need to go full assburger. Jack said Gwins frame might be made of different carbon which makes no sense considering the costs and even the bigger manufacturers don't do it. Apart from the brakes, the tires and the crank (which was from the stock bike at the last race) the bike is identical to the one from Yt. That whole RAD/Blackbox-stuff with the black stanctions is mostly marketing. For Prototypes they usually also have to use a new chassis. These are prototypes:

www.pinkbike.com/news/FOX-DH-Shock-prototype-2013-World-Champs.html

www.mtb-news.de/news/2013/06/08/prototypen-aus-fort-william-fox-dh-luftdaempfer-rock-shox-boxxer-blackbox-und-sram-xx1-dh

In Gwins shock might be a harder hsc-shimstack and a few spacers. Maybe a protoype cartridge in the fork which is not very likely considering they just updated it. And I said that nobody would profit from specifically Gwins setup which is what you indicate by saying Yt is false advertising their bike because its not the 'same' when it has just a special setup for gwin. There are also different shimstacks sold by fox so everyone can make a custom shimstack for themselves:

www.pinkbike.com/news/inside-the-float-x2-and-ccdb-air-video-2016.html

so its basically a stock Tues except for Gwins personal setup and sponsored parts. There are no custom links like SC and Specialized have. Its a stock large frame.
  • 1 0
@tabletop84: Assburger? Really. You have no logical argument so you say something an 8 year old would cringe at. It is very clear, his bike is not a stock bike. Stock would mean it is exactly the same as the one that comes direct from the manufacturer. His frame, is stock. I have never suggested otherwise. However the rest, well, a lot of it is not stock at all. And then even further, some parts are prototypes too.

Also, you do not know if anybody else would benefit from Gwins setup at all. You can't know that.

I'm not sure why you got so offended by the fact the bike is not actually stock.
  • 1 3
 @mgolder:

Well you kinda are behaving like an autist here. Yts claim that their bike ist more or less stock means it in the context that Gwin has his personal setup which is logical only an autist wouldn't get it. He also runs parts from his sponsors which are not on the bike from yt but most of the parts are identical with the stock bike. Hence with a few modifications you can get close to Gwins racebike.

To settle this once and for all just tell me which parts exactly are not stock and why you think they are not.

And knowing a few fast riders and a few things about suspension setup its not hard to imagine that the average rider wouldn't like Gwins setup because its setup for speeds and impacts an average guy will never get near at. To a mere mortal most WC-bikes would just feel harsh.

I'm not offended its just ridiculous of people who have no clue to point out that Yts claim that the bike Gwin is running is relatively stock (compared to other brands in the Wc) is plain wrong and almost every part on it is a prototype. That's just never the case if you follow the Wc closely. Only the top teams have the money and factory support to test prototypes here and there but they don't constantly do because this woul compromise their success at races.
  • 4 0
@tabletop84: An autist? It took you 6 days to reply and that is all you could come up with as some kind of attempt to be insulting? I mean, it's not like that term actually refers to children or anything is it . . . . And given I'm older than you, that firmly takes me out of that age bracket. So, you need to try harder at your insults.

Also, you have now changed your tune and are contradicting yourself to try and make yourself 'right'. At no point did I or anyone else say the entirety of Gwins bike was custom. In fact, myself and others were the ones saying that his frame may well be stock, but the rest of his parts are mostly not, suspension being from the RAD department, the fact he doesn't even really run Onza tyres, and his Blackbox equipment from SRAM, his prototype brakeset . . . . None of those things on his bike come on the one you buy from YT directly. It really isn't hard to understand. The frame may be stock, but his bike is not.

Now suddenly your argument is that the bike is 'close' to what YT sell. You have changed your mind. You said it was stock previously. . . . So is it exactly the same as what you get from YT, or is it the same frame with custom and prototype parts not available to the public? You know the answer.
  • 1 1
 @mgolder:

Dude calm down assburger is just a 4chan meme but you surely have no clue about downhill racing and suspension setup. Otherwise you wouldn't point out that a custom suspension setup and a few sponsored parts for AG contradicts the claim that the bike is more or less stock.

Also you need to get your facts straight. You said: " The frame is stock. Everything else is not what a normal customer will receive at all."

That's plain wrong and the other dude arguing that his frame might be out of 'special carbon' is ridiculous too.

So you point out he runs Maxxis tires? Well the stock bike comes with Maxxis tires and its clear that Athletes change tires for the conditions so thats a non-argument. Since he's not sponsored by Maxxis its unlikely that he will recieve a special compound. (Maxxis doens't even have a firstride-programme like Schalbe).

He is also not sponsored by Sram so no Blackbox: dirtmountainbike.com/racing-events/downhill/sram-aaron-gwin-official-line.html

So it boils down that he rides different brakes than the stock bike and he might have different shimstack/internals in his suspension although the lead enineer says that he just runs a few extra shock spacers and you can reconfigure the shimstack for yourself. He also changed from the stock carbon Lg1r in Lourdes which is on the stock bike to the stock aluminium version in Fort William: www.bikerumor.com/2016/06/16/world-cup-dh-pro-bike-check-aaron-gwins-leogang-winning-yt-tues-cf-pro

Sorry to break it to you but only with the tires, brakes and crank being slightly different your argument that "Everything else is not what a normal customer will receive at all" is plain wrong. That he runs a different suspension setup is a given and doesn't necessarily mean that he runs prototype internals.
  • 1 0
@tabletop84: Well, you being a 4chan user says a lot about your lack of understanding of a basic concept. You have changed your whole argument. Previously you said it was stock. Now you are saying it is 'more or less stock'. So which is it? Because one is actually stock and the same as what you buy from YT directly, the other is not the same at all.

RAD parts from Fox can be completely different to the normal items for sale. That is the point of having pro riders ride on the newest items unavailable to the public. So you can forget about that nonsense to do with Gwins suspension setup being the only difference. Do you get a RAD suspension setup from Fox when you buy the bike from YT? Nope. So yes, the suspension is different.

I never mentioned the crank being different at all so I'm not sure where you got that little lie from.

So according to you, a bike with non stock RAD department suspension. Different tyres. Different brakes. Some Blackbox parts (look at his bike from Lourdes www.pinkbike.com/news/aaron-gwin's-winning-yt-tues-lourdes-dh-world-cup-2016.html . . . then tell me he doesn't have anything blackbox on there) and apparently different cranks according to you, is 'stock'.

You don't know what 'stock' means clearly. It is considerably different to the one you buy from YT directly. This is really not too difficult to grasp. And stop changing your argument to say 'more or less stock' as it is making you look desperate now.

Just to make it very simple for you -

Frame = Stock
Parts = Absolutely not all the same as what you get on the retail bike.
  • 1 0
@tabletop84: I love how you contradict yourself about sponsorship too by the way, all the while trying to make out I am wrong still.

According to you, Gwin can run whatever tyres he wants, despite being paid by a company to run their tyres exclusively. If he was allowed to run whatever he wanted, why does he blackout the Maxxis branding?

Then, you say that Gwin isn't running anything Blackbox as he isn't sponsored by SRAM. But, your point about the tyres says that riders can run whatever gear they like apparently to suit.

Again, which is it? Can they run what they like to suit conditions, or are they rigidly stuck to one thing and one thing only by brand? Because you are giving off very confused signals.
  • 1 0
@mgolder: The problem is that you are stuck in captain obvious-mode without realizing that everybody knows that gwin doesn't run the stock brakes because he is sponsored by trp. Therefore the argument never was about gwins racebike being 1:1 stock.

The argument was about you saying that apart from the frame "everything else is not as it would be when you buy it" and one guy mentioning that even his frame might be different. Thats complete bullshit as I have pointed it out.

Its unlikely that fox redesigned the whole shock while they just introduced the twintube-design and its main feature being its tunability _without_ taking the shock apart. Thats the reason why the ccdb is on the market for 10 years without major changes and fox and bos copying it. It also makes no sense to argue that Gwin doesn't run highrollers from the stock bike in the conditions of Leogang. He runs the tires according to the conditions and he is not officially sponsored by maxxis its just a cooperation until Onza has developed a competititve tire design.

In the past many riders didn't run the tires of their sponsors. Dan Atherton comes to mind riding blacked out Maxxis tires. Its nothing new so stop bitching about it: www.pinkbike.com/u/captain23
  • 1 0
@tabletop84: Yes, Gwin has a 'co-operation' with Maxxis that Onza have agreed to. A special deal just for him. Despite Onza having a DH tyre. I'm sure that's perfectly true and not just him running Maxxis tyres because he finds them better. Also I notice you haven't commented on the Blackbox issue that you said absolutely wasn't true. Care to admit you were just wrong?

I love how you start every post with a really poor attempt at an insult. So by being in 'captain obvious mode' (bravo on that zinger by the way) you mean telling you that you have changed the argument from it being said his bike is 'stock' to now saying 'nobody said it would be completely stock' . . . . Have I got that right? Because that's just you moving the goalposts to try and suit your point of view.

Now, go up to the top. Look at the post redburn made. He said it is 5000eur and you have his bike. That is the post that this is all about. Are you saying that that post is correct? As that is what it sounds like. My whole argument was that in terms of the frame it is the same. But it is absolutely not the same bike as what you get when you buy off YT.

How are you not seeing that? Simple question you only need to answer yes or no to. Is the bike you buy from YT exactly the same spec (including RAD parts which exist purely for pros to run and test) as the one Gwin rides . . . .

Answer that with a yes or no please, as that would end the whole conversation and what it was originally about before you chimed in spouting nonsense.
  • 1 0
@mgolder: that was never the question. I only replied to your claim about arguing that the bike is far from stock. I don't care what redburn said. And blackbox and rad is mainly marketing but I don't care if you believe Gwin has super topsecret rocketscience-tech in every part of his bike may it look stock or not. Lets just say I'm a bit closer to dh-racing and yt than you. :p

And Gwin....what can we say that hasn't already been said. The Gwizzard didn't need any magic today, just his chain! Really got to see his speed in Leogang when everything is on point.

 connor's SCRUB!!!!! that was epic!!!!

What a great race to watch on TV, people can moan about the track but I thought it looked awesome and really showcased the sport. You could really see how fast the riders were going which some venues fall to get across to spectators watching at home!

I love Red Bull for giving us this coverage, but I'm hating this new format. If they cut out the 'Crankworx style' bullshittery - why is this section so critical? why is Rachel so fast? etc. and now the pointless "Let's go to Hannah" interviews - they could fit in at least another 10 riders, probably more.

Rather than dumb it down for the casual viewer, they could give more athletes the exposure they deserve.

But given a choice of this current format or no free coverage, I choose free coverage every time.

@oldmanfalling: They're likely doing a strategic packaging to hopefully pull in more sponsors to get back to the glory days of the 90's and actually make money on DH. Robot Warner and Claudio aren't that much fun these days.

NO CAMERAS IN THE OLD FOREST'S ROOTS AND MUD ???
  • 2 0
 for realz

Gwin destroyed the field, just when you thought Loris's run was untouchable. Never count Gwynneth out. Smoking run!
  • 9 1
Im finding the womens catergory really boring now. Rachel Atherton has no competition at the moment. Shame its not like motorsport where the women compete with the men and beat them!
  • 3 2
She should have a handicap... Like less pressured tires

(Lol)
  • 1 0
@RedBurn: wouldnt make a difference she would probably have Procore lol
  • 7 0
I was on the edge of my seat on the last 5 runs, I was sure this was Brosnan's race, it looked so clean and composed, and on it all the time, then Vergier came and smashed it, all the while thinking to myself "Gwin can't be faster than this, can he"? First split confirmed that, then it went back to the unreal performance of Gwin, more than 1 second lead gained on the flat-ish portion of the track...Awesome to watch Big Grin .
  • 10 1
Lorissssssssssssss so good, gwin is a machine !!!!!!

Phil Atwill is progressing leaps and bounds, and with no disrepect to Propaine, but I'm not sure what there set up is like and I wonder how much faster Phil would be on Gwin or Bruni's setup?
  • 5 1
Have to agree with this after reading his bike check on here. Will be interesting to see if any of the top sponsors will be interesting in Picking him Up after some good results this season!
  • 2 0
The Syndicate should court him to take Peaty's place after this year.
  • 8 0
This live timing thing is weirdly mesmerising...
  • 6 0
Such a race! Rach at 10 - impossible! Loris and Brosnan killing it. Beaumont gets a top 30... And Gwin f'ing smashing it - so fast on the bottom half of the track.
  • 7 0
Danny Hart nearly had the run! Terrible sport to be a perfectionist in but he's getting soooo close
  • 4 0
Danny has been consistent with great runs. Hope he can keep it up.
  • 5 0
He's been on quite a tear lately. It's good to see some great results, and his killer style!
  • 4 0
Hey Redbull, thanks again for the broadcasting the race! When Rachel wins the next race in Mont-Sainte-Anne which is only 54 days away (sigh), maybe give her another minute or two to catch her breath, she could barely talk today or last week when she was interviewed right after her run..
  • 7 0
Phil Atwill just laid down a mad run!
  • 11 0
And a nice endo into those bikes at the end!
  • 7 0
 Gwin: the ruiner of dreams
  • 6 1
Luca Shaw would have been on podium if he didn't wash out on that turn! That Kid has amazing form on the bike and smooth like Minnaar. "GREAT RIDE-N; LUCA!!!"
  • 3 0
From the cameras perspective, Brosnan's run looked the fastest...smooth and no errors. When he smashed into the lead by two seconds, I thought no one would beat him. And then it just got better and better with both Vergier and Gwin. These top guys are literally on another planet with their speed.
  • 3 0
I take my hat off to Gwin for his run ............but I just feel like something is missing or not quite right this year. Where is all the real characters and down to earth guys , it feels like the sport is changing slowly ........I really miss Stevie Smith is not quite the same anymore or it may just be me.

Just and idea but in I find world cup DH similar to Formula one, with the qualifying and the big race weekends. But i was thinking why not have a night race?? Like say MSA or Leogang was light up at night with bright lights and torches (maybe even a ring of fire on the final jump haha!) but the riders race in the dark. with only artificial lighting ? maybe they have their own lights or maybe not? surely this would do so much for the night riding community? any night time world cup race?? and why is there no urban tracks on the wc circuit ? like texaco or somewhere??
  • 2 0
Great race, but that female interviewer was dire. Not sure if she has some dubious connection to the producer or something, but she added nothing and took plenty away from the experience. Move on to the next work experience student please RedBull...
  • 2 0
#ratwasrobbed Gwin has four letters, you know what is one letter less than 4. That's right SHEEPLE the number 3. You what has three sides, yes, a dorito. And you know what also has three sides, the number of letters in U. S. A. #illuminaticonfirmed #sorrygwin #watchout

How is that possible with a such UNSTABLE bikes!!!??
  • 3 0
Yeah Vergier!! so stoked!! Too bad for Payet though, looks like he had a good run!

Damn Gwin is just killing it! Looks like he's really living up to that big contract he signed. I would hate to see what he's asking for come next year!!!!!

One thing that I keep thinking of, is the irony between AG and GA(Gee Atherton), and I'm not talking about their initials.
GA felt he needed a better bike to gain back his winning ways, and the Session is arguable one of, if not THE 'best' all-around DH bike made.
AG on the other hand, felt he needed to get paid while he was still relevant, and I have ZERO problem with anybody, especially someone which such a short career-life as a professional athlete striking while the iron's hot. Where the two differ so much, is where GA apparently was concerned with the equipment he would be riding(as would most people IMO), while AG has shown he wasn't concerned at all-as shown by the fact he chose a bike that hadn't so much as turned a fricken wheel in competition(professional at least).
Arrogance is uber common in professional sports, especially in the individual kind, but the best racer on the planet right now could be considered damn-near anything but, which I imagine is a hard thing to do when you decided to go after the biggest pay check possible, while relying pretty-much solely on your talent and skill.
I suspect it may have started with the winning run without a chain, or maybe the one before that when he rode on a flat tire, but the man(AG) quietly(very) decided he's got the skill necessary to win at the very top level, and while he still has it he's gonna get paid what he's worth.
I wonder how much every team in the paddock would pay to guaranty a championship..?
That appears to be what went down with Specialized and then YT over the off-season, insomuch as can be in the 'mortal' world, as obviously although AG has been head and shoulders above his competition, he competes in a sport where injuries are quite common, thus it could all go up in a puff of dust

Agree that Gwinn is on a different level. The other riders have to catch up or the tracks have to change.

However, the Specialised suspension is based on a Horst link design. Specialise had the patent for this design which expired last year (I believe). The YT bike looks to me like it is a copy of the Demo 8. Gwinn is essentially riding the same bike as last year but for a different brand. YT could previously sell in Europe but not the USA. Now the patent has expired they can sell in the USA so having Gwinn is good for marketing -hence his value!
  • 6 0
 @Prof:
Sure they are.
Except for things like, BB drop, top tube length, seat tube length, wheelbase, reach, chain stay length hell, shock positioning, rear axle width, hardware..I hear YT simply bought a bunch of Demos and painted over their graphics.

Maybe I missed the news this year, but I've been wondering the past two races WHERE IS NEKO MULALLY? Did SCOTT bikes dump him? Injured? Claudio isn't even mentioning him anymore during the broadcasts.
  • 1 0
After watching the practice runs Saturday and Sunday, Gwin certainly spent a lot of time studying the lower section of the course ... which is where he gained most of his time.
  • 1 0
Great coverage as always but Christ, bring back Cunny or Page as co-commentator. I almost had to mute the feed! That Claudio is so obnoxious and contradicts EVERYTHING Rob Warner says. So goddamned annoying :/

@MtbSince84: He's doing it in style, so we can forgive him, I guess. Wink

@MtbSince84: I think gwillam cwuvin (Guillaume Cauvin) is my all time favourite from Warner. To be fair though he seems to be improving...better than the guy on the crankworx advert trying to pronounce Les Gets anyway
