@Waldon83: It's interesting, he's been around for so long its easy to forget he's only 17, considering he was hitting fest jumps last year or the year before.

Yeah it was. Highlight for me. Gutted he went down.

Nobody even came close to sending it onto the wall like that. Guy’s the definition of the word “epic.”

He is amazing. I’m surprised Pinkbike doesn’t highlight more how quick he has recovered from such a severe injury. He just recently could walk again!!
  • 2 1
@SvenNorske: Right on. I suspect the real reason RedBull has not done a story yet is because there's no way to do it without bashing the MSA race organizers/staff for that piss poor mountain extraction....and RedBull don't want to do that as a partner/one of the lead series sponsors.

  • 53 5
@m1dg3t: I didn't see even the slightest hint of woman hating.
You act like an aggressive mental midget, while trying to pose as someone sticking up for suppressed women.
  • 46 2
@m1dg3t: Immediate attack on a simply put statement which involved no social commentary, followed by an escalation with a personal attack and social signalling.

@Beicpinc: In all honesty what were the things that you didn't like about Tracy?
  • 31 4
@m1dg3t: I find it very odd that in this comment section if someone respectful says they didn't enjoy her commentary people just assume they are a sexist/incel/ misogynist. you are capable of thinking someone didn't do the best job without hating women, It called an opinion but then again this is the internet so what else do you expect. p.s i actually liked her commentary
  • 12 2
I agree! Not sure what Claudio is still doing there. Tracey should have replaced him too or are only women allowed to commentate on women?
  • 3 0
I'd be crappin ma paynts! Love it
  • 7 2
@supermajo1: relax man it's her first race doing commentary... way better then claudio
  • 5 1
Heck yeh Tracey was so refreshing to listen to, and I think she's going to settle into it nicely once she gets more relaxed. When Claudio was commentating the women's races it seemed he was only filling in time until the mens race started.
  • 7 0
I liked her insight as to what the ladies are experiencing on the track. Good to hear it from someone who has more recently been in the mix. Her excitement was delightful though seemed to overwhelm her a bit. I'm sure she will become more comfortable on the mic in no time. Damn exciting race!
  • 1 4
@friedchickenlegs: that's probably what 90% of viewers were doing too to be honest. I know we're not supposed to say it but it's true.

Everyone is on finn Iles hype the last few year but I see in Daprela the next Gwin/Vouilloz
  • 5 2
@mensch-mueller: WOuld be cool to see but keep in mind the level of competition there is these days. Nico did not have to go against a group consisting of 15 riders who could win on any given day.
  • 16 0
That gap in the jumps was nuts!
  • 3 1
@zanda23: There was a lot of talented riders back then too. Don't you think motoGP riders are very talented ? It did not prevent Marc Marquez from destroying the field during 8 years. Sometime a field is tight, sometime a competitor is above the field. It's not about level of competition.
  • 1 0
@adrennan: That freaking gap melted my brain dude, who does that?
  • 58 9
I don’t think anyone can deny, the drone footage is so sick
  • 52 3
They only need to fix the exposure, the framing and the timing...
  • 44 17
It's shitty, annoyingly shaky and the high pitched buzz of that thing gets on my nerves
  • 7 1
It may be one of the advantages of not allowing a huge crowd on site. I don't know what the regulations are but I suppose they're not allowed to fly one of these over a big crowd. I still have this image in my head of this UAV/drone crashing a fraction of a second behind a high profile ski racer: ( Could have been nasty.

Not sure how the riders experience this. I personally hate the sound of these. Then again, they used to use cablecams there, which sound more or less the same.
  • 36 1
 Some people are never happy!
  • 11 0
as long as it stays as a follow cam and not one of these stunt drone views you see in edits that make you wanna puke everywhere lol
  • 10 3
 It’s a great addition!
  • 2 0
Loved it. I can imagine a time when we get full continuous runs from the drones. Only thing that would have made it better was if the drone followed the riders through the tunnel. Lol.
  • 2 13
flag fjopsys (Jun 12, 2021 at 9:32) (Below Threshold)
@boozed: @cardanbleu: They used the drone for the easiest section to film in the entire park, and didn't even have him follow racers through the tunnel. It's actually worse than the truck cam they used in 2019. Didn't help that the drone was horribly tuned for the wind and filming in general, it's so twitchy like he's running stock PIDs. They legit would have had better footage from an off the shelf/consumer drone, there was no need for an FPV drone. Disappointingly gimmicky...
  • 1 0
So so sick. There was an edit where, when the riders go through the tunnel and it would veer to the left and pick up after the tunnel they instead cut to the rider railing the corner. That was amazing!!
  • 5 0
yes I do love the drone as long as the drone footy does not upstage the rider and take the focus away. They milk the crap out of the overhead and i hate it. Every movie starts with a friggin overhead view where nothing is distinguishable because you are looking down and far away and the feel is eerie. They need to switch the footy to another source sooner so we can actually see the rider negotiate the drops. Sometimes I feel like I am in a jet plane watching the scud hitting Iraq.
  • 5 2
@Superburner: That would be the end of dh as a tv sport, can’t think of anything worse, static cameras show speed and detail, drone is boring and I hope they ditch now
  • 2 0
@jimmythehat: you make a good point. However I think the drones have their place in covering parts of the course where before there was previously no coverage.
Having been to WC’s in Europe and North America I am always amazed by the amout of infrastructure required in the Red Bull broadcast. If for no more reason than reducing cost I can see the drones becoming more prevalent.
  • 2 0
The drone shots through the stump section were outstanding. More of this!
  • 1 0
Drone shots are great when used appropriately, for appropriate sections. Not the best everywhere. Its going to be hard to not clip the highlights, since the feed is transmitted wirelessly live, so has to be compressed a ton.
  • 1 2
@Beazy: That was no drone. I believe the camera sits on a movable beam / arm. They've used that same setup for years.
  • 1 0
@mi-bike: Well, you’ve convinced me to watch the entire thing again to confirm. What a race!
  • 3 0
 @mi-bike: it was both.
  • 1 2
@Beazy: pretty sure that was a cable cam
  • 5 3
Cable cams don't - corner - suddenly climb - do a long track without a single mast in sight - have a drone for a shadow Now I'm not saying I know everything but I'm pretty sure this was a UFO on the back of a flying donkey.
  • 4 0
@vinay: look at mi-bikes comment, thats the answer you were looking for. The drone started after the stump section and only filmed the motorway
  • 2 0
@waldo-jpg: Oh yeah, that's what the discussion was about. Sorry, my bad. Indeed, there was no drone at the stuump section.
  • 2 0
@boozed: for sure. I'll take the motorcycle cam any day over that cell phone footage
  • 1 0
I think drones could be a solution to watching EWS events
  • 1 0
@johnnyboy11000: The issue is the broadcast range is less than 100 yards, assuming clear line of sight. In threes its like 30 feet. Thats what makes the drone follow edits so impressive- the pilots are doing that with a very poor video feed that cuts out all the time from the trees.
  • 1 0
@hamncheez: Yeah, I was actually impressed they manage to control these units from visuals it beams over to the pilot. I understand some of these devices do have collision avoidance systems built in but I'm not sure how well it works with people along the track, branches waving as a rider hits them etc. Especially at those speeds and considering the consequences if it does hit someone. What may be easier to realize would be to use loads of actioncams along along the track, maybe those 360 types that can look around like what Barelli is using when he makes videos on solo rides though I am not sure how quickly those can process the image if you want to do live broadcasts. But I'm pretty sure that if GoPro gets to show their logo every now and then they'd be more than willing to provide the hardware.

Man I was hoping she would commentate the men's race too, I love cloudio but he repeats himself a lot a seem un enthusiastic at points
  • 2 2
I like her but I hope she gets some more coaching or something. Seems more of a cheerleader. Claudio has good commentary. Just because someone is a great rider doesn't mean they can entertain on the mic. Like I said hopefully a bit more coaching and comfort on the mic and she can be as good a commentator as she was a rider.
  • 1 0
@Admiral-Hipper: Rob Warner has often said that becoming a commentator took a lot of effort and training and it is something he is very proud of. Rightly so, he is an excellent commentator. I think a lot of bike fans overlook the fact that, in reality, most commentators are pretty bad. I personally think that Tracey was good, especially for her first time and probably only at the start of her training and learning. I don't want to bash Claudio but he never seemed that up for the female race commentary. So Tracey is definitely a welcome addition.

Oh man! Valli spills on the last turn. What a let down. Women's field is gonna be exciting this season!
  • 14 1
Still she looks to be in the best shape, this was just a glitch in matrix, she will eventually win, just need a bit more maturity and patience.
  • 34 1
Also goes to show how impressive of a run Camille did. So many other amazing riders made mistakes. Going this fast and smooth and not stall anywhere is pretty amazing.
  • 23 4
@vinay: Camille was absolutely flying through the woods! Such an impressive ride for a person that's only be racing/riding DH for a handful of years. Definitely gonna have to watch out for her this season.
  • 12 7
@lkubica: If Valli can hold the reigns in just a bit I think she will be the next female DH Superstar. Still an excellent run/result for her 1st elite WC. Love when these fast juniors move up to elite!
  • 6 8
@vinay: Camille did great but she was definitely slower than Vali, Marine and Myriam on the rest of the track. This wood section just transformed the track 180 deg. from boring to completely unpredictable. Camille for sure was the best alrounder and strongest mentally so she won. I doubt she could win on a more traditional track though. But her performance was impressive for sure.
  • 11 0
@m1dg3t: Yeah, I love her attitude. She clearly loves riding and I believe her when she said that she'd have been just as happy if she had placed second or third. I also understand that perspective eventually changes for someone who has been stacking up wins over the course of years. But at this stage she seems clearly stoked just being there and doing well.

Either way, this season is going to be an exciting one. Many of those who crashed out here were quicker than Camille and they'll likely not crash or stall these next races. And as mentioned (and probably no one questions), Vali may be new in this field but she'll more likely than not take a win this very same season.

@lkubica: I just checked the splits in the table above but I'm not convinced.

start to split 1: Vali and Marine were quicker, Myriam was not
1 to 2: all three were quicker indeed
2 to 3: Vali and Myriam were quicker, Marine wasn't
3 to 4: no one was quicker
4 to finish: no one was quicker

We'll probably we'll get to see more detailed stats eventually but this is what I could quickly gather from the table above. Some riders were quicker in the early sections, but no one was quicker after split 3 so to call her slower "on the rest of the track" is a stretch. Even to call this later section "unpredictable" is a stretch. Troy Brosnan has proven to do well there in the wet in both qualies as well as finals. Camille won the worlds (which were wet too) and she won here today. Sure there is more to go wrong in the steep wet roots sections, but it takes commitment and composure first and foremost to even stand a chance. And that's what she has in spades. Maybe her lack of experience is a bliss too. Most of her top competitors are experienced which implies they've also dealt with long and painful injuries. She doesn't carry that burden so maybe it is just easier to focus on the job at hand.

Another thing of course could be that these Commencal bikes are really great in the rough. Not sure what these junior women were riding, but other than that I count six Commencal bikes in these other three top fives (and three Canyon and Trek bikes) so yeah that may have helped too. As for "a more traditional track", I don't know really. Leogang used to be the predictable track. Now it clearly no longer is. Who knows what the other tracks will throw up this season. What would be what we call a "traditional track" now?

Either way, I am a fan. The rider who keeps smiling, loves doing what she does, who can be happy with her own performance regardless of how others perform and excels in the tech stuff is an amazing rider to have on the circuit.

Leogang getting rid of its easy bike park reputation

Yes, but the race hinged on just one section. And then it was 50:50 as to whether the riders got through it unscathed.

@jay-me: I dunno, Thibault kinda proved you could crush the top and still be in contention.

Can we talk about how they named the section Vali's hole?...
  • 4 0
@karpiel002: we could if that's what they named it

@Giddyhitch: spelling
  • 3 0
@karpiel002: Yeah, I was kind of waiting for Warner to say something inappropriate....
  • 1 0
@ceecee: you dont have to play stupid, it was clearly a play on words
  • 1 0
@karpiel002: holarious; hellaerial. But Höll is a proper name, not a word, and die Hölle is a witty homophone. Shall we discuss the feminine article?

@mi-bike: Well there's a lot of new montainbikers around atm so I imagine redbull wants him to keep it pretty basic. But his obvious enthusiasm for this stuff is contagious.

So sick that DH racing is back on. Jackson Goldstone has a very bright future in this sport.
  • 5 0
The force is strong with this one
  • 1 0
Jackson is one future champion of this sport indeed ! But he still has a long way to go and hard work to provide. Remember when Finn Iles was crushing it so bad early in his career. It's a great reminder to how fierce the competition is within the elite !
But man Jackson seems so versatile, I hope he can achieve big things in freeride and DH, like a true freeracer Smile

Bulldog hitting that jump onto the wall is one of the ballsiest moves I have ever seen in a race. Despite the fall, bulldog for a win this year.....

What a race! So psyched for Troy who is a genuinely great guy. Met him at MSA and he was all smiles. Also hats off to Dak who is officially among the best riders in the world. So happy racing is back!

Daprela won in my heart. Second place goes to Danny for the massive flat landing on the first jump. Third to Bulldog for the wallride transfer.

 Exciting racing!
Now let's give Tracey some time to get into her role with the commentary and then that's gonna be prime.
It was the classic things when someone ends his/her competitive carreer and then switches to the broadcasting side.
Was fairly obvious aswell here in Switzerland when Tina Weirather switched from racing her self to commentary. But after a few races it was clear that she found her role and added really great insights in the commentary and was able to not race it in her head each run she commentated on.

  • 1 0
@vinay: well, easy.. e did not brake that much and held on to the bike haha.. seriously though, the entrance to th woods was a very key part.. the right hander and line choice until that brdge.. people were kinda stalling there..others flew and braked at the bridge to drop..
