Final Results: Mont-Sainte-Anne XC World Champs 2019

Aug 31, 2019
by Ed Spratt
Simon Andreassen had bad luck on the rocks of MSA today and had to settle for seventh.

The results are in from a dramatic day of racing with Nino Schurter taking the rainbow jersey once again in the Elite Men. Pauline Ferrand Prevot would lay down an incredible performance in the Elite Women and led Jolanda Neff by 43 seconds. Sina Frei proved why she has been racing in the Elite category at the World Cups and take the World Champs title by over 30 seconds.

Wow, this expert NBC announcer is on fire. Talking about the riders finding "second winds" on the first lap of the women's race. And navigating "rock faces." So happy we get this level of expertise instead of Rob Warner on Red Bull.
  • 12 1
Same on the NZ coverage... to make things worse you can hear Bart in the background commentating
  • 4 1
 Crying phuckin' shame.

Why do I suspect they are doing to do the same shit for Snowshoe?

Good thing I'll actually be there.

Hey bro you should hear the the commentating that I have to put up with. I'm sitting right at the top of the rock garden and I got these people commenting but they don't know who anyone is. Life is hard sometimes. I have a couple of American people next to us and all they care about is the American Riders. That is my life.
  • 25 2
What a hard life actually being at the race...
  • 1 0
@rrsport: Where are you getting coverage in NZ?
  • 2 0
@chainslapmag: I couldn’t get a VPN to work so I just paid the $20 to get sky sport fan pass for a week. Figured I can then watch the vuelta as well for the week
  • 1 0
 @chainslapmag: sky sport chan 9

commentary is crap...some dude talking to bart, but barts microphone isn't turned on - you just barely hear him.
  • 1 0
 @handynzl: definitely crap commentary
  • 1 0
And they still haven’t turned on Bart’s microphone.... wtf
  • 8 0
@chickenlassi: they let non-Americans race? Tell me this is a joke!
  • 2 0
I had no problem watching the race on Red Bull in Texas without a VPN.
  • 2 1
@chainslapmag: going to red bull tv via a VPN works well....
  • 1 0
@dagon2112: Ya there are many sites that stream HD , would post a few but would probably get banned or something. If you have trouble search on reddit. Hint none of the sites end in .com
  • 1 0
I also watched in the US. On Redbull app.The app asked for my location and I denied. Played just as usual.
  • 2 0
@chickenlassi: damn Americans cheering for damn American riders, the audacity
  • 23 0
PFP is a comeback story of the year! And great to see Batty in top 10 again.
  • 1 0
someone explain me what's the thingie on schurter's nose? i've been wondering for years.
  • 1 0
 @r0bb: lets more air in?
  • 22 0
Jose Hermida was great in the commentary booth. Dude seems to know everything
  • 17 0
Man. What a bummer for Kerschbaumer to lose silver due to a flat on the final downhill. Guess that's mountain biking though.
  • 18 1
yeah it s a pity for him.. but the 2nd and the 3rd also got a flat or a technical issue during the previous laps so in the end it's not so unfair.
  • 15 1
Hermida as a commentator was a complete breath of fresh air and killed it. The old back and forth between Rob playing dumb and asking the same questions to Bart whom repeats the same answers was exhausting.
  • 15 0
 Brilliant result for Bec McConnell
  • 7 0
The men are heavier than the women (XCO athletes); that is why most of the men were taking the last downhill around the rock and not over the rock like some women (1-2km before the finish line). Mathias Flückiger took it over the rock and had a flat tire, then Gerhard Kerschbaumer did the same on the last lap, he went over the rock and had a flat tire. The people who watched the race will understand what I'm talking about.

Also, for the people who are having trouble watching RedBull.tv

Install Firefox, and then add https://browsec.com/en/

The trick is to use browsec just for the start of the broadcast, then disable it, that way you will be using the full speed of your internet connection, otherwise you will be limited by the quality of the VPN (IP mask).
  • 1 0
This, so much. I tried the free VPN and was unimpressed by the video quality, but this solution nails it.
  • 2 1
What stupid BS ! These fkn companies have convinced people its their job to figure out how to get things they want after they pay for it! Literally 'when I was a kid' you just turned on the TV and watched shit you wanted and ads payed for it - receiving the signal was free. Now sheeple are convinced to pay 2x over because they are so smart they know the insider way to get what they want after they have already paid for the connection to the great equalizer - the liberating internet! Nero fiddles .... Sorry for the rant. Need a ride.
  • 5 0
@brentkratz: Right. I'm sure when you were a kid you could find great coverage of any niche sporting event on one of your three channels.
  • 2 0
@acali: tbf there were a coupla dozen channels and there were not many niche sports - just the mass consumption pro stuff. Niche sports were something we just did on our own and didnt expect it to be followed.
  • 5 0
So how do we not have this issue tomorrow? I refuse to give NBC money for their bullshit GOLD streaming service after they pulled some shenanigans with the Monster Energy Supercross season broadcasting.

Will RedBull be allowed to put up the replay? I guess we'll find out with XC later today.
  • 3 0
Took me about 15 seconds with protovpn today. First time trying one. Easily set my location to Canada
  • 1 0
 @alexisfire: +1 this!
  • 1 0
Actually it was carried FREE on the Olympic Channel, under the NBC umbrella. You've got to thoroughly investigate all options.
  • 1 2
@reemmo0: You have to remember that there are like 100's if not 1000's of channels out there. How exactly do you effeciently investigate the options before the event ends?

But of greater import is the fact that while RedBull does have the right to do it anyway they want, THEY HAVE BEEN DOING IT A CERTAIN WAY FOR SOME TIME! This creates some level of expectation (something we are keen on in UI design).

Now if I the next time I (RedBull) hosted an event but I was going to do it in a manner that's different than other times, might it be a good idea for me to put it on "MY" (RedBull) site so people showing up "KNOW" it's changed?

In this case, RedBull couldn't be bothered. So all the people that don't "LIVE" on Pinkbike or NBC and have a reasonable expectation that it's going to be the same as last time show up to the site only to be surprised to find it's changed.

In terms of Customer Service / Relations, RedBull sucks!

Just download "Melon VPN" on your phone it is free and works.
  • 1 1
Thanks Mraz - Working for me now
  • 1 0
Hmm still not working for me. Clean app, though!
  • 1 0
 Siiike. Got it. Awesome. Thanks!
  • 1 0
Sweet man! thank you!!! now watching it from the US. It works
  • 1 0
 Awesome ???? works perfectly
  • 3 0
People should be aware that VPNs are not free to run, and if you're getting the service with no charge it means the provider is either 1) running a charity (unlikely) or 2) paying the bills another way - potentially by selling your information
  • 1 0
@Preachey: or worse, they could also be using your device as part of their botnet or to mine bitcoin.
  • 2 0
@Preachey: they run a shit ton of ads to make it free.
  • 2 0
I DL Browsec Premium app which has a 1 week free trial which you can cancel anytime(I’d recommend after today). Set my location to Canada and it’s working. The only downside is that I can’t cast it to my tv so I’m watching it on the mobile, which isn’t terrible. The Women’s XC is on right now and it seems to be live. HD footage as well. Hope this helps, and hope it still works for the DH races. Cheers!
  • 2 0
The free Browsec defaults to NL but I was creeping along at 240p
  • 2 0
Wow really good results again for the Ghost ladies (even though they now ride for their country, I know). I never really followed Emily Batty though I noticed in the comment section people seemed worried as she was performing much worse than they were used to. It seems she is right up there now with a top ten finish. After all those worries, it is worth a mention.
  • 1 0
Emily tends to perform well at worlds. This was still a bad result based on what she has done historically, especially since it’s a home nation course
  • 2 0
People are saying its due to her diet.
  • 5 1
@panzer103: nah, we were just joking about it. I seriously doubt it would be solely due to diet which BTW we know nothing about. It’s good to see her back. Gutted for not seeing Rissveds up there, it she made history already anyways.
  • 5 0
@WAKIdesigns: actually we know a decent amount since she's started a YT channel and is open about her new Keto diet. There is a good speculative video with good sources to back up that her diet could be a good explanation of her results this year:

Was really keepin' my ffingers crossed Jenny would pull one out of the bag again. Ah well.
Congrats Pauline Smile
  • 2 0
@Artikay13 I was pullin' for both of the comeback girls today. IMPO, Both are great stories this year. I'm sorry Jenny didn't have a better day and stoked for PHP. From the looks of Jenny's left shoulder when she came to the finish line she'd either hit the ground or a tree off camera. Hoping she;s not hurt and will make a good showing next weekend at Snowshoe.
  • 2 0
Jenny's missed at least two full seasons of World Cup action? She barely raced at all in 2017.

To be honest, I've been surprised that she's recovered her form so quickly. She has been on the podium three times, and has another top 10 finish on top of that. I really didn't expect much in the way of results from her this season. I just thought she would build up a base of training and get reacclimated to the highest level of competition, with better results in 2020. I think she's surprised everyone, perhaps even herself with her outstanding results right of the gate.

Jenny is going to have an outstanding 2020 campaign. Quite frankly, can anyone complain about her results in 2019? She has far exceeded my expectations and has had one of the best seasons of any racer in the field not even taking into account her long layoff and personal struggles.
  • 2 0
Lots of people have been caught off guard by Pauline's superior results. She's coming off major surgery after all.

How many riders can you think of who have won 5 world championships? How many riders can you think of who have won a world championship in three different disciplines?

Now, how many riders can you think of who've won three world championships in three different disciplines IN THE SAME YEAR?

That is a very, very short list indeed.
  • 1 0
@toprace: she was able to race at TBE world cup level with PAD for 4 years:o
  • 2 0
So it looks like Redbull missed the start of the race as well! The replay of the race begins about a minute and a half in. The announcers didn't seem too nonplussed about it. They chatted casually while they and everyone else missed the start of what was ostensibly the most important race of the year. BTW, the replay is geo-blocked as well.
  • 5 0
yeah the satelite link was down, which they repeatedly apolgised for, then as soon as it was up they crossed to the live stream. Therer was zero they could do about it so they kept chatting.
  • 3 0
Sigh. Too bad about all of the complaints about geo-blocking. We could be talking about Pauline's extraordinary rise (or shall we say return) to the top of the standings instead!
  • 6 0
 Wow, Rebecca
  • 2 0
Just going to have my ‘free’ half hour on NBCsports and then go do something else. They expect people to pay for this, and even throw in commercials every couple minutes. Piss off.
  • 3 0
Took me about 15 seconds to download protovpn and change my location to Canada
  • 3 0
Edit: Redbull.tv app on my iPhone worked perfectly in the USA. Redbull.tv app on my Roku TV did NOT work,
  • 2 0
Just tried it and Red Bull TV is live on my phone. I’m not home so can’t try it on a bigger device.
  • 1 0
Wait so Rob isnt even in MSA, hes in Austria and we are dealing with having to watch it in low definition through VPN. what a shit show. or in Canada, what a gonger. fuckin kooks.
  • 1 0
I'm using a VPN with Germany as my virtual location and I still can't watch.
  • 1 0
Try another country. Canada worked for me
  • 11 11
What a fukin joke. How the fuk you gonna geo-block the Worlds DH? Well, I'm off to social media to $hit on the Redbull profiles. Garbage.
  • 18 0
Not sure it is red bull's fault. Think it is whoever the UCI sold the broadcasting license to. Might have been too expensive in some countries for Red Bull and some private network outbid them? I could be wrong...
  • 8 0
Just watched the xc race, used a vpn to spoof my location to Great Britain
  • 4 0
Yep, it's not the fault of Redbull. They were just outbid by a bigger corporation. In NZ it's Sky TV unfortunately.
  • 3 1
@Nicksen: well the UCI IS a non profit tax free sports body based in switzerland so technically excluding the US viewership is affecting the country where a fourth of the total participants a coming from. So it is an issue of greed and discutable neglect of developing the sport.

Just sayin...

  • 2 3
@Nicksen: Too expensive for Redbull though? Seems like few have deeper pockets. Either way, American greed is prolly at the root of it. Sigh.
  • 2 0
At least on the BBC we have Bart to give us some insight. Beer
  • 1 0
Use Epic Privacy Browser and watch on Redbull TV.. Set location to German. Easy
  • 1 0
Good work redbull for moving UI on redbulltv app for ultrawidescreen phones! Finally i see all graphics
  • 1 0
It’s on the Olympic channel in the US.

Women’s replay at 5:30pm CST and men at 9pm CST.
  • 1 0
Also just found DH on the same channel tomorrow at 4 and 5pm CST for women and men, respectively.
  • 4 2
Do not care about your vpn issues, but Pauline's victory is sooo good!
  • 2 0
Good for Emily Batty! Finding that pace again!!
  • 1 1
She's been so "terrible" this season (Rob's term, not mine), that even a decent showing (barely top 10) stands out as a highlight.

Having said that, her two best showings of the season have come in Canada. She's definitely brings the fight on home turf. I've opined on what I think her problems are (speculative to be sure, but plausible speculation IMO).

It's tough to see how she finds her way back. She's clearly drastically altered SOMETHING about her training regimen and shows no signs of returning to 2018 form.
  • 2 1
No coverage on RedBull TV??? Or is my feed just down?
  • 6 2
 Apparently we are Geo-Blocked!

Such Bullshit. They couldn't have mentioned they weren't going to play this shit before?
  • 1 0
@BDKR: Yep, Geo blocked. I guess I have to wait for the replays to get posted.
  • 1 0
I'm blocked too! Worlds coverage is generally worse, but this is terrible.
  • 5 0
 @BDKR: www.pinkbike.com/news/how-to-watch-the-2019-mountain-bike-world-championships.html
Use a VPN, the browser Opera is the one I'm using to watch. But it seems the feed is delayed right now.
  • 1 0
@thomasake: What do you mean delayed? I'm getting a "starting soon" message instead of the event playing.
  • 2 1
@BDKR: does that mean the UCI intends for viewers to somehow pay for watching the events? Or actually travel to Canada to watch them live?
They consistently find new ways to cock it up.
  • 3 1
Oh duh, they want us to pay for NBC. Middle finger salute!
  • 4 0
@thomasake: Yeah.... I had already started working on that. I'm now watching via an Italian VPN. :-)

For people still trying to get it sorted, check out freevpn.me
  • 1 0
@formula411: that's what I meant, I'm getting the same "starting soon" message
  • 1 0
 @twozerosix: Ain't that the truth.
  • 4 0
@BDKR: It was discussed at length. You don't read every single PB article?
  • 3 0
@endlessblockades: Phuck no! Too many collectivists!

Oh.... And I have a life too. ;-)
  • 1 0
It's not geo blocking as I am using a VPN and still can't watch the event.
  • 2 0
It is geo-blocking. It said it right on the web page earlier!

As for it not working for you, just using VPN isn't enough if you don't understand how to use it. Are you using a web based proxy? A VPN with a server in the US?

What's working for me is a VPN with a server based in Italy. A long ways from North Carolina.
  • 2 0
@BDKR: VPN with various servers in countries which are supposedly not blocked. I still couldn't get the red bull stream to work. I eventually found one that did: melon vpn. I saw the last half of the race, but missed all of the tension and excitement of the start and early jockeying for position.
  • 1 0
 @formula411: Awesome!
  • 1 0
Even a VPN isn't working for me.
  • 1 0
Weird it’s not block for me
  • 1 0
Watching thru the app on my tv
  • 13 16
LOL, americans complaining about the mechanisms of a free market economy... Highest bidder wins folks! Guess that was NBC then in your case. And last time I checked, the UCI wasn't a charity so suck it up. And stop blaming everything going wrong in your lives on the UCI.
  • 5 1
well the UCI IS a non profit tax free sports body based in switzerland so technically excluding the US viewership is affecting the country where a fourth of the total participants a coming from. So it is an issue of greed and discutable neglect of developing the sport.

@wildedge586: You make the mistake thinking non-profit and charity is the same. It is not.

And of all countries, the US is the last country coming to my mind which needs development with regard to MTB: 2nd largest number of athletes at Mont-Sainte-Anne after the host nation, birthplace of MTB, most iconic brands of the sport are all US origin.

Put hey, what do I know...

 Yet another phuckin sock puppet.
  • 1 0
I Had to buy a VPN, clean all the cache and It worked fine!
  • 1 0
The world champs coverage was AWFUL.
  • 1 1
Sucks I can't watch it at RedBull.tv here in the US Frown
  • 1 0
Just run a free vpn for the weekend
  • 3 6
Kate's come back down to earth. She took advantage of a depleted field early in the season and got cocky or even cocksure of herself. Unfortunately for both of her first names, the chicken's come home to roost...
  • 2 5
For people who are still busy being phucked 0v3r by Redbull, check out freevpn.me.
  • 4 2
It's not Red Bull's fault nor are you entitled to endless free streaming.
  • 1 1
@endlessblockades: As I said (or intimated) elsewhere on this page, it would've been nice if it said something about this on the Red Bull page BEFORE today.

What? You don't read all my comments?
  • 3 5
Redbull TV works fine in Eu. And no Bart, yey.
  • 2 2
I’m not sure who was the commentator with Rob but Bart is miles ahead of that dude.
