Rocky Horror Show Finals Photo Epic - Lošinj DH World Cup 2018

Finals day has been and gone in a puff of smoke, no refunds required... Anybody disappointed with that race besides individuals by the name of Macdonald or Hannah has undeniably been following the wrong sport all along. To witness that full throttle sprint down a gauntlet of some of the most heinous terrain nature can procure, followed by a final dash through the Croatian streets was a delight to behold. Admittedly brief, it was a race that succeeded in packing all of the good stuff into those 2 minutes 20+ seconds and it's left everyone both sides of the tape wanting more - heck let's have a whole season of it.

Idyllic atmospherics blessed the hillside from every day, start to finish and had there been more than a spoonful of dirt available on this course, it would surely have been hooking up just perfectly. In the end, only the most prepared, precise and plain lucky of racers survived the relentless bombardment of igneous aggression and more sedate man-made speed tuck, to come out on top. Vali Holl and Thibaut Daprela made one hell of a first impression in the junior women's and men's categories, while last year's World Cup champion, Myriam Nicole, romped to an intimidating 3.5 second victory against a field that included a fit and healthy Rachel Atherton. In the men's race, Aaron Gwin flexed on what was clearly a perfect off-season to maintain his insane stranglehold on the competition and was joined by two fellow Americans (Luca Shaw & Dakota Norton), an in-form Sam Blenkinsop and rising star Dean Lucas. Meanwhile, Saturday's hero; fastest qualifier, Brook Macdonald, took an almighty spill, but survives to take the fight onto the Highlands at the start of June. The 'Bill just can't come soon enough.

bigquotesI don’t know what to say… It’s not my favorite kind of track and still isn’t my favorite kind of track because you are on the edge and you can pick up injuries quite easily if you push too hard. I managed to stay on my lines and put in a good time so I’m really happy with that! We’ve been doing a lot of testing and the bikes are working so well. For the first winter ever I’ve been working hard on both myself and my bike and racing on such a gnarly track my bike was working perfectly and for a girl that is so important. The last few months have been quite intense with studying, but I managed to do everything so I could not be happier today!Myriam Nicole

bigquotesIt's always kind of crazy, it's such a long off season and you’re training for so many months waiting for basically today, which was barely a 2 and a half minute run… By the time I got here I felt ready, but you never know since racing can be so unpredictable... I wouldn’t really say it’s a relief to win, it’s just exciting for me every time! Every win feels good. I love the challenge of a new track and with a fresh track you can find lines that sometimes other people don’t have. I knew times would be really tight from trackwalk, but I was excited as it looked like it would suit me. It was gnarly, but fun and just a good weekend all round!Aaron Gwin

@gooutsidetoday: Not really that remarkable if you look at past world cup winners. I'm not saying he's crap or anything I'm just saying it's nothing special yet.

@fatduke: your soooo right. 20 world cup race wins and 5 overall title wins........ its nothing special yet, you better write him a little note saying must try harder.

What happens when they get older? Do they get like put out to pasture? I'm 28, and I'm like visibly disabled compared to when I was 17, my career would be well over. Do they just keep going until they're not good enough anymore? Man that would be a lot of pressure watching yourself deteriorate.
  • 47 0
@Kramz: apparently if you're Greg Minnaar, you just keep going strong.
  • 11 3
@CF519: I thinking depends on the individual and whether they can keep the motivation required. Look at Gee, who hasn't been on it for about four years despite physically having what it takes. He obviously just can t be bothered any more. On the other hand Minnaar just keeps that fire in his belly year after year. Amazing!
  • 12 1

Gwin continues to be the ultimate force to be wreckoned with in downhill racing.
  • 17 2
@jaame Not sure about that. Gee has been in and out of hospital wards a lot for the last 3 years. Shoulder issue, broken hip...each time at the start of the season. Minnaar hasn't had nearly the same level of injuries. i find it amazing he still decides to get back on the DH bike and doesn't try his hand on Enduro. I don't think Enduro is less competitive or easier, but the crashes aren't quite as harsh
  • 3 2
@vesko: I know he's had bad luck with injuries lately, that's true. I'm a big fan of Gee Atherton. That's why I said that about him not being bothered any more. I believe if he was 100% into it like around 2010, he would be right at the sharp end of the field, challenging for race wins. He still has what it takes in my opinion. Hopefully he proves me wrong and gets quicker over the next couple of races. I would love to see him back up in the hunt for the overall, but I doubt it will happen.
  • 8 2
@jaame: Before 2016, Gee has been one of the most consistent riders in DH. I'm sure he works just as hard as the top 10 guys but he's been injured a lot recently. Plus, he never really had the raw pace of a Gwin, Minnar or Hill. I think the field has improved a lot recently with younger riders emerging like Vergier, Shaw and Pierron. It's much harder now with the old guard still on top with the young guns reaching their level as seasons go by.
  • 11 10
@almacigatrailrider: @jaame - I think the field is so much on its toes right now that if you have the share of bad luck with injuries like Gee had, you’re just not in top 10. Then you have the young guns who just don’t know yet how it hurts when you risk like that. Greg is known for not riding in a “go big or go home” manner, he just has that potentially career ending injury experience with him, which makes it even more admirable what he is able to achieve. Danny Hart has recovered from a major digger two years ago, he was able to put it back together. Quite a few can’t. To me Gwinny does look a bit over the edge, Greg? Very rarely if ever. Troy seems to be riding smart even if it means not winning. That’s what I also love about Blenkis come back to podium. That lad is a fkng power house. If he went (back) to Enduro, he’d be a fkng force to reckon with.
  • 11 1
In my humble opinion, Minnaar has never had that raw pace of Hill or Gwin. His strength is in his consistency and his ability to ride on the edge, but not over it. He has 24 wins, but that is over a twenty year period. Gwin is a phenom in comparison. Riding so close to the edge, but like Greg never seeming to crash. He's amassed 20 wins in seven years, which is just next level pace. I think when Gee was on top, say 08-12, he had the beating of Minnaar everywhere. He had Sam for consistency and power, and was not far off on raw talent. It's just a shame because he was a cut above the rest for years. He has ten wins now I think, which must put him in the all time top five.

  • 11 3
@fatduke: please read what you wrote... they all train to win Big Grin
  • 5 0
@fatduke: He and everyone else train to be fast. But, to consistently be able to look a field of the 60 best riders in the world and be better than every single one of them by a few seconds consistently is unreal. 2-3 seconds is literally nothing in real time, but on a DH course it's the difference between 1st and 10th. The fact that more often than not Gwin can get down a 2-5 minute course 2 seconds faster than every other rider is remarkable.

@fatduke: well since you lack a fundamental ability to compare performance of several individuals while doing same task and cannot identify people who are bad, average and/or remarkable at something I am left with very few options: you don’t meet people, you are socially handicapped or you believe in some sort of weird equality of outcome. None of these options are mutually exclusive. I am however certain that there is something wrong with you. Some thing like Gwins chainless run, Harts Champery run and Athertons winning streak are remarkable. Gwin winning a race by less than a second is just Gwin being Gwin which is good.

Can someone explain to me why riders seem to wear so little in the way of protection? Obviously everyone wears a helmet but beyond that it seems hit or miss. Some racers (literally) look like they just roll up their sleeves and storm down the hill?! With all those rocks I was expecting everyone to be wearing elbow pads, knee pads, spine protectors, neck braces – the works, because anything could happen right? Are these things considered unnecessary? Do they hinders riders ability to handle their bikes? Balls of steel?
  • 4 1
They wear a lot under the clothes I think? Monika is the only rider that seems to wear gear outside of it. But I think they wear a lot of those swish new pads that are soft, but go hard on impact. Oh Danny Hart wears a neck brace too.

But yeah I always think they look like they should be wearing more.

Pinkbike! We need answers!

Nothing would have saved Brooks coller bone, well nothing that would allow him to ride a bike down hill. Good solid muscle is actually a great protector against broken limbs. Most appeared to be wearing back protection.
  • 3 0
I think most riders wear some sort of back/ chest armour and kneepads. Nearly all wear gloves and a lot will have lightweight hip protection, although this is less common.
  • 2 0
Been there this last couple of days and seen a lot of things. Great majority of those riders are young or very young and I don't think they had some serious injury before. They are just YOLO. Saw a guy in adidas training pants which made me laugh. He was in top 15 if I remember correctly.
  • 1 0
@Archimonde: that was luke Cockburn I think
  • 1 0
mcvittees I wonder the same! All that gear together probably isn't considered unnecessary, more like uncomfortable.
Not too uncomfortable that it would hinder your ability's that much. Think it has a lot to do with the confidence Pro's have at race speeds. Riding that track without elbow, shoulder pads, even gloves! f-ing crazy. Its like a pro skateboarder who doesn't wear helmets because it makes them uncomfortable, Its crazy! What Im saying is NOBODY really expects a crash, usually it's out of nowhere you flip smash your elbow into the ground, a rock, or tree and destroy your arm. Only then you start thinking, should I wear elbow pads??? So why not just wear them before it happens?
Always noticed injured riders(recently minnaar) tend to go slower and be more cautious when there back from a crash. Think to myself, even if u don't crash often, why not ride with full body armor, so when you finally do crash it might not hurt so bad and keep u in good shape for the future...

Don’t ask me. I wear elbow pads on flow trails.

Any thoughts about how the DVO performed for Marcelo? I was thinking the same thing as Rob Warner when he mentioned how low into its travel his fork looked. I wonder if he blew is low speed compression or something.
  • 15 18
If you would read what people write on Pinkbike you would know that it is impossible. DVO is the best cuz it’s old Marzocchi. Meanwhile look at all those folks on pogo sticks.

We were riding yesterday and suddenly like in a nightmare, we realized we ride on Rock Shox forks. We were not sure if we would get home. Then i saw it... my friend... he...he... there was a Reverb under his saddle and inserted to his frame!!! I opened my mouth to say “doooon’t pres...” but he did... it was too late.
  • 2 0
Marcelo should do the next EWS round.
  • 11 5
I don't know about the rest of you but the "city" section in the low section was really lame, no crowds (like in the urban-DH races), one would have figured to maybe build a wallride here or there...... boring - didn't do this event and Location justice! I'm ony referring to that lower section where they enter the City...
  • 14 3
Who cares? It was a very short section in a wild track otherwise. Awesome to Watch!I
  • 8 1
I agree the city section seemed so anticlimactic after that bruiser of a rockgarden course. 'how close are you willing to ride past a wall' is not fun. The rest was so cool i don't even mind though, still a great track for spectators.
  • 13 1
It was way shorter than the Cairns sprint to the finnish. I see no problem.
  • 5 1
It was 20 seconds of a 2.5 minute killer of a track. They were probably relieved it was there by the time they reached it.
  • 5 1
I will also say that it was surprising to me how much time was won or lost in that section, which looked sketchy as phuck to ride fast IMO.
  • 1 0
@jackalope: they lost time in the woods bit most I thought

Came here expecting to see Tim Curry in fishnets and a corset, disappointed.
  • 6 1
Whatta great weekend that was, all perfect. Congrats to organization crew and all riders for a great show.. hope Lošinj finds space for another race in the calendar of next years.
  • 7 3
Like how can people downvote you ? Totally with you there, 29er domination is yet to be obvious even on a rough track like that where it should have been much better than 27.5. Now forget about that non-sens, maybe keep it for bike-park tracks and Fort Bill but stop trying to sell us this BS and BS bikes.
  • 8 3
I went to the 29er route and now back to 27.5 and will never go back. I am 6'2" btw and owned both hard tail and fs 29ers
  • 7 1
Best podium location ever!!! So awesome
  • 4 0
Would have even been better if they opened up the side curtains on it so 90% of spectators could actually see the people on it.

Brook MacDonald breaks his collarbone & rides down to the finish. Wow!
  • 5 0
Wow--let's give it up for Dave, Ross & Nathan--outstanding photos! Great work, Cheers!
  • 2 0
Gwin is the living proof that as much as you try, train hard, practice, etc, you have those very few individuals that are just blessed and gifted to do what they do...like Jordan, Senna, Hamilton, Rossi, etc! We can have masters but then we have THE maestros!
  • 6 1
Norton & Ravanel were the winners in my book. Amazing.

The Bulldog with a clavicle fracture... likely out for Ft. Bill and more?
  • 3 0
I'm pretty sure 2 months is enough time to heal a broken bone. Modern medicine does some magical things...
  • 1 0
Shit.. I was saying this before... it was not normal he did not brake it falling from 4 meters onto the shoulder... Bad ATS let him ride his bike with broken clavicle..

“I’ve been working hard on both myself and my bike and racing on such a gnarly track my bike was working perfectly and for a girl that is so important.”

Ahem, excuse me?

 must be a french thing...

Likely a reference to not being as physically strong to power through some of the real rough stuff if bike setup is off
  • 1 18
flag Pinemtn (Apr 22, 2018 at 23:55) (Below Threshold)
@davetrumpore: having a good bike setup doesn’t matter to me, especially because I’m a man. Us men strategically choose better lines, to avoid having to power through any rough stuff.
  • 13 3
@Pinemtn: Stay strong buddy, keep asking them out and one day one of them won't laugh in your face.
  • 1 0
I know they're all on custom tuned shocks anyway, but maybe even pro women riders struggle with suspension setup being outside the bell curve of typical rider weights? Regardless, always nice to see some candor in these interviews, nicely done Pom Pon!
  • 2 2
I could be wrong but I think what she’s saying is it’s difficult to have a bike that can be soft enough to maintain comfort and not kill your hands and arms on such a rough track while still having the support to race and win a World Cup. For Brook Macdonald or Adam Brayton or whoever the comfort issue won’t be as big as the support issue but for others the middle ground is necessary to achieve.
  • 1 1
was she not the only woman who got over the first double cleanly? Even Rachel who often seems strong enough to be able to take lines the other women wont seemed to come up short .
  • 1 0
@Daledenton: Definitely it is very hard for the girls. Was watching the trainings, some girls had to stop at some points because their hands were probably screaming with pain.
  • 1 4
@BenPea: hang in there Ben pea, it’s not your fault you were born with a low IQ. Head up, bud!
  • 1 4
@davetrumpore: to assert the importance of bike setup is gender exclusive is silly.
  • 3 1
@Pinemtn: @Pinemtn: take it up with the fastest woman in the world who made the statement, not the messanger (see her quote in the artical up top)
  • 3 0
So wait, Trumpore was standing behind Bell, with a bigger lens, for the women's podium? Trippy.
  • 2 0
And a little to the right...

Just noticed this. Pretty cool, thanks for pointing out.

Great coverage, cant wait for next round already!

btw YT tales of the mob is already out, do they even live???
  • 2 0
Not destroying, he's inspiring many to be like him. I'm excited to see next generation of super riders who will rise thanks to Gwins achievements and super positive attitude.

 I heart Pom Pon.

That shot of Rachel treading water is my favourite Pinkbike photo of 2018 so far.
  • 9 6
So, 29er still running faster ??
  • 7 4
4 out of 5 riders in the top 5 ride a 29'er (and 6 in the top 10)...so...yes, they do run faster, but Gwin is still the better rider overall with more skill...
  • 10 0
 @RichardJBos:

Then let´s hope Gwin never gets a 29er or this series will be boring as hell.
  • 3 0
What happened to Finn? Did he crash?

 yeah

Heck of a first race! The RedBull coverage was spot on, and way to go Gwin and Luca Shaw!!! Well deserved.

@davetrumpore @natedh9 @rossbellphoto Boys!! What can I say!! epic coverage as usual, see yo on the hill at fort bill :-)

Is it some NYC Pride on first photo?
  • 4 6
And they say Minar is the greatest of all time.....BS only 3 titles to Gwins 6.
  • 2 5
Gwin wins a couple of pedal stokes
  • 3 6
Stupid tires that cost so much to Minnar goat .. in 2 consecutive battles
  • 5 0
It doesn't happen just to minnaar, gwin also got a flat last year, and nothing says he won't get one this year. Luck and bad luck are part of racing. Gwin is still not a world champ...
  • 1 0
I recon they ran an insert only in the back? That's what Vergier said in an interview...

 Blenkinsop is an American?
Since when?
