Finals Photo Epic: Maribor World Cup DH 2021

A wild and wonderful week drew to a close in Maribor with an explosive conclusion. There were concerns about another race run washout with thunderstorms forecast for later in the afternoon; thankfully they held off until an hour or so after the final rider had crossed the line. That man was Loris Vergier and he finally shook free from his bad luck to lay down a clinically clean and smooth run on a chaotic track, making it an astonishing 3 in a row in Maribor. After initially being in the red, Loris clawed back the time on compatriot Thibaut Daprela to break the beam 1.7 seconds up. The Frenchmen were joined on the podium by Laurie Greenland, Greg Minnaar, and Loic Bruni who all laid down strong runs.

In the women's, second-placed qualifier Myriam Nicole went 1 better and managed to depose Eleonora Farina from the hot seat on her way to the top spot. Vali Holl was last down the hill, but unfortunately, it wasn't to be, losing time in the lower woods, she trailed home in 6th. That meant Nicole was victorious with Farina taking a career-best in second, World Champ Camille Balanche was third although the loudest cheer probably went to home soil hero Monika Hrastnik in fourth. Tahnee Seagrave rounded off the podium.

Phoebe Gale and Jackson Goldstone continue to lead the charge in juniors, both taking back to back victories in their respective categories. Gale was ran closest by Izabela Yankova with Aina Gonzalez Grimau a little further back third. It looked like Jordan Williams made a mistake towards the top of the track having been up on Goldstone, he fell behind before clawing time back on the rest of the track, eventually being pipped by a few tenths. Kiwi Lachlan Stevens-McNab backed up his strong qualifying for the final spot on the podium.

Attention now turns to Val di Sole in 2 weeks time before the World Cup season comes to a busy conclusion in Lenzerheide and Snowshoe.

Good to see Thibaut doing so well despite smashing his face in. Good race everyone. Hope to see those that were injured this week in the next race!

Is it just me or does it seem like some of the field are basically back to wearing skin suits? Daprela’s in particular seemed snug.

@powderturns: the Dorval team is the worst offender IMO. Those pants are vacuum sealed!

I think I watched Bernard Kerr make a comment about how tight everyone’s jerseys were this year in one of his last videos. @powderturns:

is it just me or does the energy between Minaar and Daprela seem off? When Daprela finished his run there wasnt much celebration between the two and on the podium for pictures Minaar is kind of off on the side

Saw in the live feed where he hugged the other two dudes and just breezed pass Minnaar. Odd

 Couple things:

1. Minnaar historically hates getting beat by Frenchie's
2. I've never met Daprela, but I've traveled a bunch in France and while I hate to generalize, French people can sorta kinda be dicks?! (And I speak passable French... Can't imagine the attitude if I didn't...)

Saw that. In surfing it’s generally not cool to “claim” a wave. Thibaut’s celebration reminded me of the Macho Man in the ring. Wonder if Minnaar was put off by that.

On the podium Minaar shook Daprela's hand and said "that was amazing." Can't imagine what more anyone would need to be all right than that kind of praise from the GOAT.

Different generations I think? Minnaar was winning races when Daprela was born (2001).
It didnt look great in the broadcast but hopefully this is not the case.
  • 13 1
From what I saw, Minnaar went to congratulate (being the consummate pro he is), and Daprela kind of ignored him and palmed him with his hand. He was probably excited about celebrating with his French team mates and is still young. Professionalism grows with experience and I'm sure no disrespect was meant.

Story of the Young and Old Bulls - Daprela - young, excited, hungry to prove. Minnaar, wise, accomplished, The GOAT of all bulls. Must I tell the story?
  • 3 6
Personally I don't think Daprela comes across as particulary likeable. Clearly talented but also a bit too much cockiness and arrogance to go with it?!

Who says they all have to be freinds? All the hugging and smilling is only cool when its authentic, Everyone giving Vali a hard time too for just leaving finish area after she lost. She was probably visibly upset. Fake excitment isnt the same as good sportsmanship, which they all practice.

@loam-addict: he may be a bit like that but if he wasn't he probably wouldn't be as quick as he is. Some of the greatest talents on earth have had odd or disagreeable personalities.

@tremeer023: yes and we don't care after all! Same story with Vali on the women side. She rode straight to the pits..., nobody on that gossip?

I'd love to have seen a mini time split from touching down on the landing to, the right hand turn, and over the line. They were all laying it down but Laurie Greenlands right hand corner, all the more impressive on low pressure, knobbly tyres, (as captured excellently up there) was something else - I'm positive he'd have took that win!
