Finals Photo Epic: Snowshoe World Cup DH #2 2021

Holy smokes was this a hard day to get your head around. Just like in 2019, the manner in which things unfolded seemed too far fetched for this World. Coming into the event Commencal Muc-Off team-mates Myriam Nicole and Thibaut Daprela seemed to have a total stranglehold on the overall titles, but over the last few days that grip had weakened, and today it gave out completely. Unbelievably Nicole had a second race run crash, clipping a pedal at the end of the final sprint while going toe to toe with Vali Höll for the win. She'd eventually cross the line in absolute shock and finish 7th, which opened the door for the young Austrian to take the elite overall World Cup victory. Marine Cabirou, Camille Balanche, Tahnee Seagrave, and Nina Hoffmann took the remaining podium spots in the final race of the 2021 season.

In the mens, Daprela's huge qualifying crash yesterday gave Loris Vergier the nod for the series, but a scruffy race run under pressure left him deep in the pack, opening the door for compatriot and ex team-mate Loic Bruni to steal the show and take his second overall title in the most dramatic of circumstances. Troy Brosnan ran Bruni the closest half a second back as Angel Suarez took his best result yet whilst Amaury Pierron returned to the World Cup podium. American Luca Shaw got the loudest cheer of the day riding to the last available spot on the top steps. Snowshoe certainly doesn't seem to do things by halves... Wild and wonderful indeed. Thanks for following through the 2021 season. See you next year!

"Update on Jess Blewitt after her horrible crash. Jess has a broken femur requiring surgery. She also has a broken collarbone, wrist , cracked rib & two small cracks in her lower back fortunately none of which require surgery. Healing vibes to Jess from all of us in the riding community."

@Mister-X: Shit that's a lot of bad injuries! Atherton's would be honored to have her on their team!!

All kidding aside; wishing Jess a full and speedy recovery and to return stronger!!!

I mean as bad as that list of injuries is, it's a relief that it's not spinal cord damage. That crash looked so brutal my immediate thought was I hope it's not spinal or otherwise a career ending crash. So scary! Best of luck healing up Jess.

Bruni is a boss. Simply amazing. Pompon is an unlucky boss. What happened to her happens to everyone of us at least once a year. Just a wtf happened moment. Just sucks it got her in the most important race run of the season. But you know what, she is still the freaking WORLD CHAMPION, so there's that.
  • 1 0
Yeah for sure. It reminded me so much of Vali's crash earlier in the season, Leogang maybe? Going that fast, going 100%, near the bottom, getting tired. I think Pompon said she was in the wrong place by a matter of centimeters. Bummed for her, just like for Vali earlier in the year.

The UCI should make a rule to end every WC season in Snowshoe.

What they do is to avoid traveling back and forth between continents. So if the races are only in North America and Europe, they will either start or eind the season in North America. What we'd love of course if there would also be races on the southern hemisphere and there is a world between Austria and Australia. With all those racers on a bit of a budget (privateers primarily but also the smaller teams) in mind it would be nice if the races would be mapped such that teams wouldn't have had to travel as much. But even then is tough. Racers from the southern hemisphere are already used to having to live a full race season out of a suitcase (which implies that they have to make enough money in the off season to pay for that). Even Tracey Hannah had to give up after placing third overall in 2007 so that goes to show how hard that is. How many Euro racers would be left if the races would be scattered more evenly across the world?

And yeah, I digress. Sorry...

TL;DR: With the current spread of WC races, the season could either start or end in North America.

@vinay: The 2022 UCI DH calendar does exactly what you mention they try not doing. Being in Europe for first stops, heads over to the USA and Canada, and then back to Europe for the final round and World Champs.
  • 1 0
@vinay: the point was Snowshoe has served up a dramatic ending to the race and season both times it has been the finale. that's it. nothing about logistics, privateers, "World v. Europe".
  • 1 0
@TCarl11: Ah, I see. I wasn't aware of the 2022 calendar. Seems stupid indeed. If they're going to another continent, they could at least have gone to a third continent instead of back to Europe.

@ReformedRoadie : Didn't mean it as a matter of "Europe vs world". Just meant to say that at the moment we see European riders on the circuit primarily as it is just very expensive for athletes from other continents to race the WC the way they're planned now (mostly on European soil). I'm pretty sure if it would have been held mostly in Australia and New Zealand we'd soon see so many more great riders from there (and probably also more from the North American west coast). If it would be scattered all over the world, maybe only the best supported riders on the big teams get to race a full season.

I don't really attribute a dramatic season ending to a certain venue.

rumour has it he’ll be on the Syndicate! Seems to be some substance behind it, and he’s been hanging around the team a fair bit lately by the looks of things. At world champs Rob Roskopp was on an interview saying it’s time for the team to bring on some new talent to grow and mentor, so it all seems to point that way… really hope it’s true!
