A tremendous few days of gravity-fed bicycle action in the French Alps concluded today in spectacular dry and dusty fashion. For more than two decades the Portes du Soleil has been the center of the European mountain bike universe and today was all the proof needed to show its continuing status. Under clear skies that were a far cry from the horrors of Crankworx 2016, the French fans flocked to the Mont Chery hillside in swathes that suggested MTB’s still got it. That or sipping beers under the summer sun with friends is still a big hit. This one might be hard to decipher.

The atmosphere was electric and the Bastille weekend crowds got what they wanted - that all important French victory. To be precise it was two wins when you include juniors. In total, team France amassed 1st, 2nd, and 5th in the men's and a 2nd place in the women’s as well as a win and a 3rd place in the junior men's and women’s respectively. Ca c'est la classe! Vive la France indeed.

Troy Brosnan and Laurie Greenland came closest to spoiling the patriotic mood, but luckily the trio of the French Wolfpack were firing on all cylinders with Loris Vergier once again laying down a podium performance before Loic Bruni went under three minutes and straight into the hot seat with one rider to go. Top qualifier and last man down, Amaury Pierron, somehow produced another sublime and superior run, nothing short of a masterclass that saw him roar to victory with more than two seconds to spare. Marine Cabirou so nearly did the business in the women’s race, missing out by less than a second to series leader, Tracy Hannah. Meanwhile, Thibaut Daprela took the junior win on home soil and Vali Holl, quite notably, rode the fastest female lap of the day.

 ***Little rant:

Hey US fans, we better turn out to Snowshoe this year. We may not have it like the french do, rider/performance wise, right now, but let's make sure the UCI wants to comeback. I have never had a chance to witness a World Cup, so me, my 3 yr old, 2 yr old, and wife will be yelling our heads off at any rider that flys by us. French/American/Indonesian, I dont freaking care. The atmosphere at this race from behind a computer screen was bonkers. I want the international racers to want to race in the US, I want the big shot US guys/gals to race in the US, I want the up and comers to be excited for home soil races. And I'm pretty sure Neko, Dakotah, and Sean had a lot to do with this track!!

 Will be bringing the noise. Got a great cowbell that needs to be used more!

 I agree, there has been a lot of chat about the relative lack of venues on the WC circuit on your side of the pond, hell half of UK MTB still marches to Fort Bill every year to watch basically the same course be raced. Hope you rouse a good rabble !

 WV trip is booked and we are ready to go make some noise!.
  • + 3
 @usmbc-co-uk: “Rouse a good rabble”
That is the best thing I’ve ever heard!
That needs to stamped on the side of a IPA or something!
Probably pretty common on your side of the pond.
My favorite US saying right now:
“Hey, if there’s enough blue sky to make a pair of blue jeans, you know it’s gonna be a nice day”

 So sad i was not there, Whistler should learn from this, Les Portes du Soleil's lift ticket is two time cheaper, affordable accommodation and you can drink Génépi outside. No more fun at the Crankworks it's getting boring in Whistrelia.

 Anyone else get the feeling that they all have leveled up this year? We've got Junior Women posting amazing times, incredible pressure in Elite Women and consistency in Elite Men we haven't had in years. Is the age of the Elite Win Streak over? Have entered the age of "anyone's race to win?"

 LES GETS out a good bottle of don PIERRON and celebrate Bastille day and the pure domination of the French and our beloved DH... mind blown with the level these lads are pushing.

 Is Loris back on 27.5? The lowers on his fork seem to show "Fox 40" instead of almost everyone else's "Fox 49"

I noticed that in practice/quali pics and looks like it's the same for finals.
