I did watch it. I feel honoured. Schurter had a bad start, probably low cog. But he fought back immediately. Half a lap in he was back in top 10, soon after leader and never looked back. Schurter is just incredible. Stoked for Schurter.
@ReformedRoadie: unless they go back 10 years and make a gravel course Sagan has no chance if the track is proper xc like the ones we've seen this year.
Judging by the last panamerican in Brazil the gravel course is a big possibility.
@frankwizza: The road race is too much of a crap shoot, he'd have no teammates to support him and he'd be a marked man. He has a better chance of a medal in the mountain bike race.
He's racing the Tour for the Green jersey, so he can dial it back when he needs to and finish the Tour on form.
@ReformedRoadie: In my sht worth opinion, XC gets old enough to generate quite specialised training and I just can't see how someone who trained to sustain 100-150mile ride every day with potential necessity to hammer it down for a few miles or sprint at the end, can beat people who train solely for 2h long attempt at cardiac arrest at extremely mixed pace.
@WAKIdesigns: totally agree. I remember back in around 2010 a pro road cyclist just fresh fom the giro and tour that year entered the crocodile trophy and got totally blown out the back door. Cant for the life of me remember his name. Now that event is more similar to his training/racing than it is to standard xco. Different energy systems and then, as others have eluded, there the skills aspect! Sagan was a mtb rider early in his career if im not mistaken and didnt he race a few races earlier this year?
@slowrider73: don't forget that Sagan will start on the back row. Even with a smaller Olympic field, he will still have to work his way through a lot of bodies.
Good for you! Me i just watched the replay. The slow start wasn't due to a low cog but coz of an unclipped pedal per Nino interview at end of race.
Acc to Julien, Nino won't be racing MSA. This is probly in order to rest and train for and hopefully win in Rio. This means Julien has a huge chance of being WC Champ after Andorra if he stays and finishes strong (1st in MSA, 1st or 2nd in Vallnord). Maxime Marotte is not far behind!
Right now, Nino leads by only 90 pts. 900 for Nino and 810 for Julien. Maxime is back by 180 pts at 720.
@WAKIdesigns: Have you seen Sagan in a 40km TT? Plenty of power for an XCO race. Road racing isn't just about endurance, plus he's a sprinter -- 2nd for the green jersey currently in the tour. He's an animal.
@unclemuscles: XCO is so much more than just raw power though. And Sagan is a slightly above average TT'er and not that great on the longer 40km TT's. If he gets a top ten, he should be thrilled.
Same thing as with Van Der Poel he was being hyped as a top 10 before coming to xc and top 30 is the best he has done.
Im not taking merit from this guys Sagan and VanDer Poel are fantastic in their disciplines but I am very glad that XC has specialized to the point of not being a glorified road race requiring a specific skill set and training needed to compete at the very top level.
@ReformedRoadie: Road cycling is not the same. He is a beast on the road. But that doesn't mean he will be a beast in a specialized event. Plus, he did beat Froome in a sprint. My niece could beat froome in a sprint on her run bike.
Look at those times! Those lucky enough to watch the race without or with less difficulty, i envy you. To redbull, im too pissed to even put my thoughts into words. Where's my punching bag...
He was a junior world champion not u23. And that was awhile ago and when he was specifically training for and riding XC. It's to specialized for someone to come in at the highest level and compete with the best.
Judging by the last panamerican in Brazil the gravel course is a big possibility.

I think he'll be ok.
You can't blame him...there is no way he'd be making the money he does on the mountain bilke.
He's racing the Tour for the Green jersey, so he can dial it back when he needs to and finish the Tour on form.
I'll take that action...

The Rio road race course is way too mountainous for Sagan; that's why he's racing the MTB race.
